Chapter Twelve
Strange Humans...
Leo had used the dish soap from the kitchens and the bathroom soap to wash his hair and face. He had debated upon looking at his injured limbs, but he wasn't sure if he wanted to know what they looked like under his dirtied bandages.
With a shake of his head the guard tightened the bandage, biting his lip hard enough to likely draw blood. When the wrappings were tightened he adjusted on his crutch and looked around the bathroom. He had only been in here a few times, he preferred the one at the gas station down the block. It was much nicer there.
...plus it didn't smell nearly as bad.
Pizza must not agree with a lot of the guests here, because this entire section of the restaurant had a terrible stench.
Shaking his head Leo went back to work.
The rest of the day passed smoothly, and by time it was evening he was half laying on the table and half sitting down in his chair. Anyone who got into close proximity of the guard was growled at until they went away.
The animatronics were watching him again, but Leo didn't care. He felt like he was dying. Everything hurt, the room was spinning and he felt ill. Perhaps the abuse his body had been receiving was catching up with him. Jamie had come over at some point, but when he had lightly touched Leo's shoulder, the younger man received a hiss and a pained foot as Leo had purposefully stamped his crutch on the waiter's foot.
The young man's limp now served as a warning to any who came near.
When Jack came in, Jamie had warned him silently about Leo's mood, and the cleaner nodded heading over to the man despite the waiter's warnings. Jamie threw up his hands exasperated and left.
"Hey, gloomy pants." The cleaner pulled up a chair across from him, and Leo slowly looked up, one of the dirtiest scowls on his face. Jack wasn't fazed. "I was wondering when you'd run out of pills." The guard continued to scowl, but Jack continued to ignore it. "Oh, c'mon Leo, I can spot an addict when I see one." He withdrew something from his pocket and the guard watched him carefully. Only to blink in surprise when the cleaner slid over a pack of cigarettes. Leo blinked up at him confused, and Jack smirked a bit. "Consider it motivation to stay. The bots haven't killed ya yet, even though the both of us know with those injuries you wouldn't last long if they really tried. So, you got some sort of truce going on. I'm tired of burying night guards. You stay? I'll bring you a pack everyday." Leo paused and looked down at the pack...before snatching it up and pulling out the lighter from his bag next to him. After he slipped it into his mouth, inhaling and exhaling his tense body relaxed. Then he cast his eyes up to the cleaner...but Jack was gone.
Shifting a bit in his spot Leo looked up at the animatronics, he pulled the item from his mouth and let out a deep breath, the smoke drifting out.
"...I'll stay. So long as this truce holds." He warned his eyes automatically drifting over to Bonnie. "I'm not someone's punching bag. I won't let that happen again."
And with that, he got up and hobbled to his office.
Jack had made good on his promise, every day that Leo was there the cleaner would bring him a pack of cigarettes. Which the guard eagerly awaited. It wasn't like he was extremely stressed anymore, but without his pain meds, the drugs was the only thing that kept the pain at bay. When the sixth night passed, Leo felt a sense of accomplishment. He was alive, he had made it through a whole week at Freddy's.
Though this was never how he had imagined his week would go. By time the sixth night came around, the night guard seemed to be on pretty good terms with the animatronics. They would play card games, or 'force' Leo to try a hand at the arcade games that they had been aghast to know he had never played before. The children hadn't made another appearance and for that Leo was grateful. He wasn't sure his body could handle another night with those unstable kids.
Speaking of his broken condition, the bots seemed to have taken acute notice of how damaged he was. By time Saturday and Sunday rolled around, the guard found he was not permitted to get up. Every time he had tried, he was merely picked up by one of the animatronics. Well, one of three. Freddy himself never participated. But the three others would pick him up and demand to know where he intended to go.
It was mostly Foxy and Chica, Bonnie usually hovered awkwardly to the side, and Leo found himself grateful for that. Out of all of them, he had the most unpleasant memories with the rabbit.
However, every time he found himself getting angry with the lagomorph, the bot would somehow look even more pathetic, as if he could sense Leo's thoughts. His ears would droop, sometimes he would just go onto the stage and take a seat, strumming his guitar quietly. Leo wasn't sure he had ever seen such a gloomy being.
But aside from the depressed hare, things seemed to be going well. During the day the animatronics behaved friendlier, even to adults. Leo hadn't been sure why that changed, but not long after he realized…
They trusted him to take care of any problems that might arise.
Leo wasn't entirely sure he was comfortable with that amount of responsibility.
Sure he had managed to stop the guy, but only because he had the element of surprise. If the man had been able to recover in time…
Leo's nights would've gone very differently.
It was strange, how one small event could change his entire life.
As he spent more time with the incredibly human-like animatronics, Leo couldn't help but marvel at how sophisticated they were. They could have such devastating strength, and yet do something with the gentlest touch.
However, with all their sophistication, there was still a problem.
Foxy.
Whatever that technician had done to him when putting him back together...it really devastated his systems. Leo could see he had the ability to do what the others could, but there was usually a glitch that made his body do something he didn't want it to do.
He had nearly taken Leo's head off Monday night when he was trying to reach for a new card.
The guard would forever be grateful to the chicken who had pushed him down just in time.
Even if it hurt like ## $.
The fox had been freaked out and apologetic, Leo tried to calm him down, as it seemed every time his emotions spiked his glitches grew worse. But the guard himself had been shaken.
Leo went up to John the following day and lied. Telling him the fox had been turning on and off during the day, and that they needed a repairman soon.
The manager had agreed and started making the calls.
Now, Leo honestly wasn't certain why he didn't tell anyone about the fact that the animatronics weren't trying to hurt him anymore. Part of it was because it was his secret and no one else's.
And if they knew that he wasn't in any danger...would they try to replace him?
That wasn't something he wanted to find out.
There weren't very many incidents that week, and things were going well at night. They would play card games, and sometimes the animatronics would tell him about the various odd things that had happened at the restaurant over the years.
Leo felt himself growing into a rhythm, he would stay up with the bots at night, and then go and sleep behind the restaurant, when it came time for his shift he would return and work up until around five, then he would return to his sleeping area and drift off once more. And if he felt like he needed it, he would go to the gas station and pick up a coffee and pack of cigarettes.
The guard had never been the biggest fan of alcohol, it brought up uncomfortable memories of his. Plus, he found water to be one of his favorite drinks. So between that and soda, he was content.
Things were going well. Suspiciously well considering Leo's life up until this point. By time Wednesday rolled around Leo found himself growing anxious. With everything that had happened the past week he expected something to happen soon. Things were too peaceful. They were going far too well.
It wouldn't last.
The sound of children playing in the dining room, along with the mindless songs that the animatronics sung filled up Leo's ears. A cigarette was between his teeth as he went through the different rooms on the monitor. He shifted a bit catching a glance at his new bandages. Jamie had insisted. So much so he wouldn't leave Leo alone until the guard got them changed. The arm and leg beneath were not for the faint of heart, but Leo was sure they were healing.
He hoped.
The guard couldn't afford any more hospital bills.
Leo turned his attention back to the monitor, one glance at the dining room affirmed that everything was alright, and as he switched over to pirates cove, he found the fox themed animatronic playing the solitaire game that Leo had taught him.
How poetic.
...and depressing.
With a breath, and a promise to himself that he would visit the bot soon, Leo continued to go through the cameras, only to stop in the dining room as he spotted Jamie waving at the camera. He gazed at the screen with a frown, a frown that soon morphed into a scowl as he realized Jamie wanted him to come to the dining room.
With a breath, the guard got himself out of the chair and hobbled to the dining room, Jamie spotted him and stopped waving as he came over.
"What is it Jamie?" He was extremely bothered that he had to put out his smoke. "This better be good."
The waiter gave him a vaguely irritated face at his attitude before motioning behind Leo. The guard turned around and blinked at the sight of John speaking with two people.
Not that the sight itself was unusual, but the people he spoke to were quite unusual.
The man he spoke to was tall...something Leo noticed with a grit of his teeth. The man had snow white hair on his head, it was tipped with the oddest shade Leo had seen hair colored in.
Probably because it wasn't just one color.
It's like a cold themed rainbow threw up on this man's head. He had varying types of cool colors, from blues, purples...and green. It was such a strange combination it was bound to turn heads.
Not only that, he wore a lab coat of all things and couldn't seem to stand still. The man bounced from foot to foot fidgeting and wringing his hands together like Leo had often seen Jamie do.
He wasn't the one speaking currently, and neither was John's. Instead it was a woman's voice. Deep, but with a bit of a melodic rhythm to it. Leo best thought of it as a voice that could easily be used for intimidation purposes.
The guard took a few hobbles forward to get a look at her.
On her face sat glasses, she had messily cut short black hair, and was wearing flannel, her pants ripped up and what appeared to be combat boots on. Her dark brows and dark eyes in combination with her absurdly pale skin made for quite the intimidating and yet beautiful combination.
Leo had to blink several times to snap himself out of a daze.
"I heard that those are the mechanics..." Jamie trailed from behind him, making the guard jump and look back at him cursing a bit under his breath. The waiter mouthed sorry looking apologetic but Leo just took a breath and turned to look back at them.
"Those are mechanics? They look like nerds." The guard mumbled feeling quite unimpressed. Jamie chuckled a bit behind him and Leo looked back at him. "What?"
"Nothing, just...the term nerds, I haven't heard it since I was in highschool." The man calmed his chuckles and Leo blinked at him. The waiter took a breath, "sometimes I miss grade school. Then other times I remember that I hated it."
"So, what were you then? In highschool. My guess is a geek, nerd, or dork." The guard smirked at the waiter.
At least until Jamie looked at him offended, "excuse you, I was captain of my highschool's football team!" At that Leo blinked.
"Wait...seriously?" The redhead nodded and Leo let out a breath, "huh..." then he paused and raised an eyebrow. "Is it because this is a small town?" That made the younger man pause and Leo chuckle a bit. Jamie flushed and looked away.
"Whatever! I bet you were some gloomy goth in high school." The man grumbled crossing his arms.
"I don't know. I barely remember highschool." At that Jamie turned to look at him.
"What? Why?"
Leo looked at him and raised an eyebrow, "cause I was high."
"...oh." Jamie shifted, rubbing his arm. Leo shook his head and turned back to watching John get flustered as the multi color haired man spoke. Leo tried to ignore how much the man's voice resembled that of the children's on that night.
"...why do you do drugs?" Jamie's question made Leo snap his attention to him. The man was gazing at him with a...ugh, sympathetic look. Like Leo had just told him his dog died or something.
"I don't know, I like it? Is this really necessary to talk about?"
"Well...I just, this may be a bit bold of me, but you...don't seem very happy Leo. I know I haven't known you for very long, but..."
"Jamie, drop it." The guard warned as the waiter opened his mouth. However instead of backing down the red head looked up at him.
"No, I won't. Look, I know you are the broody guy who doesn't like people. But I just...I've just noticed that you seem...really unhappy. Does this have to do with the fact that your parents are dead?" The waiter pressed and Leo was full on scowling at him now.
"Jamie, this is not a girls chat, this is not a sleepover situation, and you are not my therapist. I don't have to tell you anything. My problems are my own, so #$#$ off already." With that the guard hobbled over to the newcomers and manager.
As he came over, he walked into the middle of a conversation.
"...have been doing good, but our guard, he has been saying that the fox, the one I've bought you here to fix, well he has been waking up in the middle of the day, and well...considering that his programming is buggy...he may wander out of pirates cove..." the manager laughed nervously, "and obviously we can't have that." Leo bit the inside of his cheek to keep from protesting that Foxy knew to stay inside his cove because of what happened, and the last thing the red bot wanted to do was get someone hurt because of his actions.
"So it's just the fox then?" the woman asked, making Leo glance at her. Somewhere in the back of his mind he noted that she looked vaguely familiar, but she honestly could've been someone he saw on the streets one day.
"No, the other three need repairs as well. Minor as they are, it would be best if they didn't become problems later on." The guard chimed in, causing all three of them to look at him...and then over him and over his casted arm and leg.
Gee, could they be any less obvious?
"And who might this be?" The woman asked, John shifted pulling at his collar and sending Leo a look that the guard didn't bother to acknowledge.
"My name is Leo. I'm the night guard." The woman blinked a moment before nodding.
"I'm Joey." At the name, her eyes flickered over him, at that Leo couldn't help but frown, there was that inkling of familiarity again, but it wasn't big enough to catch his attention.
Especially when the multi color haired man jumped in front of him causing Leo to stumble back, only his crutch saving him from falling to the ground.
"My name is unimportant! You can call me Acid!" the man then stole Leo's hand and shook it vigorously, but that action only caused Leo to frown more.
His prejudice for tall people came at him like a speeding train down a railroad.
"The # #$# kind of name is Acid?" He griped straightening up, John sent him a look that went ignored again by the guard.
"Well what kind of name is Leo? The legitimacy of names is merely a cultural construction. One day I bet there will be someone named Pillow! Or Blanket! Or Scott!"
"...Scott is a real name." Leo said gazing at the odd man with trepidation
"It is?" He asked and then turned to Joey who nodded looking exhausted with this man.
Leo could understand why.
"Oh! Well good for the Scotts out there, I'm all for a name revolution, whose with me?" The man looked around at the group surrounding him, some of the parents and children passing gave him an odd look and Leo felt like doing the same, but refrained.
"Annnnnyways..." the guard dragged out a bit gazing at Acid for a moment longer only to turn to Joey next. "You guys are qualified right?" The guard honestly wasn't too sure of the legitimacy of these two. The woman looked like she just got off the bad side of town and he was pretty sure Acid escaped the loony bin and stole a doctor's coat while at it.
"Says the hobo in a uniform." The woman griped crossing her arms, Leo stiffened and glared at her.
"I am not a hobo, why does everyone keep calling me a hobo!? This is my job, I have a job. I am not a hobo." The guard emphasized only for Joey to smirk amused.
"Alright." She then took a breath and stretched her shoulders by pulling on each arm and directing it to her opposite side. "Might as well get started, where is the broken bot?"
Leo took a breath and started leading them to pirates cove, he was certainly planning on staying with them.
No way in $%$# was he leaving these weirdos with Foxy.
"His name is Foxy." The guard protested, and he could almost hear the eyebrow raise in Joey's voice.
"He?"
"Yes, Foxy is a he, Bonnie is a he, as is Freddy. Chica is the only girl, and they all like being called by their names." The words spilled out of his mouth before he could stop himself. He let out a breath and cursed under it.
"...they...like it?" The woman asked, and Leo just decided not to answer. He opened the door and hobbled inside. The guard found himself glad that John had returned to his office instead of following them.
Though he probably had to keep working out the kinks in that deal with the contractors.
Leo...had yet to tell the animatronics about what he had heard. For one, it may not even happen...but two...he honestly wasn't sure how they would react to that news.
"...wow. Yeah, I can see why he needs repairs...geez..." Joey breathed snapping Leo's attention back to the present. The mechanic went over to the bot, who Leo was very glad to see back in his position on the stage. He likely heard them coming in.
"Yeah...he t-...I heard that the last guy who tried to put him back together did a real shabby job at it. He is pretty glitchy." Leo internally swore at his near slip up. He had to be more careful about it, he could afford it with Jamie, he was pretty sure the redhead had figured it out already. But with these people? Who knew what they would do if they knew just how sentient these bots were...
"He looks like it..." the lady trailed as she came right up to the crimson bot. Leo felt his heart leap into his throat. He hoped his face was pleading enough with the fox to remain still.
"I uh...maybe you shouldn't get so close..." he trailed, trying to ignore Acid who had climbed into the model ship and was doing something inside of it.
"How am I supposed to see what is wrong if I can't get close?" Joey asked, not moving an inch away. Leo sighed, and looked at Foxy silently imploring him to stay still.
When the woman leaned down to get a closer inspection of his legs, the guard watched Foxy's only visible eye look down at her and then at Leo.
'Please be good, she is here to help you.' he mouthed, the fox stared at him for a long moment, and with a slight dip of his right ear, Leo's body sagged a bit with relief.
Leo proceeded to watch the woman's every movement. Every step she took, every place she touched. Acid was who knows where and honestly Leo didn't even know why he was here. She seemed to know what she was looking for, and muttered to herself about parts. Leo knew he should go outside and resume his duties as day guard, but he didn't move a inch.
Lately the guard couldn't help but notice how...protective he was beginning to feel toward the bots. The concept itself was absurd. Especially considering they were the ones trying to kill him.
But there it was, the surge of protective urges that the night guard couldn't explain if asked.
Though, while he couldn't explain it entirely, the guard suspected it had to do with some of the things Foxy had told him. The thought of the same man who murdered the children, and destroyed the bots, was still out there...it disturbed Leo more then he would like it to.
Over the past few nights...it had been nice, fun even, it wasn't anything spectacular, he played cards and listened to stories.
Leo...just couldn't remember the last time he had good and genuine fun like that.
"Okay." Joey's voice forced the guard to register the reality around him, he blinked looking at her, and hoping she wouldn't notice the fox's yellow eye on her as well. "I need lots of new parts, and normally that would cost your company a fortune, but I'll cover the costs myself. So money won't be a problem." That took Leo by surprise, the guard blinked.
"Oh...uh...thanks..." he stammered. She only nodded and headed toward the door. Acid suddenly appeared by her side and Leo watched as she opened up the door to the dining room before pausing and turning back to face him.
"I'll be back here tonight. I hope you have a compromise with them. I'd rather not get stuffed in a suit."
Not caring how Leo's eyes widened, the woman turned and left the room.
So! New ocs! I've been excitedly awaiting the time that I can introduce them! They are going to be important to the storyline going forward! I hope you guys like them!
Speaking of the new characters, what did you all think of them? How do you think Leo's interactions will go with them? Were you surprised that Jamie was the captain of his football team?
And a bit different from the usual questions, would you guys prefer a slower progression through the month before the toys arrive, or would you like to see a overview of the month so we can get to the toys arrival sooner? I've been going back and forth on what to do.
I'd love to hear your opinions, and thank you so much for your support!
