When Maddilyn woke up, she was laying down. Still tired, she snuggled closer to the source of warmth that was beneath her. She could hear giggling off to the side and tried to ignore them. Below her head, she thought that she heard a heartbeat but it was so in sync with her own, that Maddilyn ignored it. She felt someone put their hand on the small of her back and heard a small sigh of peaceful sleep. For a second she forgot where she was and thought she was in the arms of Jared once again. She inhaled deeply but didn't smell the vanilla and chocolate of her old friend. Instead it was the smell of old spice and fancy soap. Woken from her day dream, she opened her eyes and saw the two girls who were accompanying Kid. Looking up she saw that she was laying on Kid and not Jared.
Not wanting to wake him, Maddilyn stayed were she was. She gave the two girls a look that shut them up. Kid groaned as he woke up. He lifted his hand off of her back to rub his eyes. "Liz what time is it?"
"Eight in the morning and the bus comes at nine. So you should hurry and get up." The older of the two answered his question.
"Hey did one of you put a blanket on me?" His arm was covering his eyes as he yawned
"No." The younger giggled. "But someone put a cloak over you."
"Patty what are you talking about?" He glanced down and noticed Maddilyn laying on him. "Oh…."
Maddilyn sat up and smoothed her skirt. "We should go outside and wait for the bus." Without waiting for the others grabbed her bags and headed outside.
Kid came out and put his hand on her shoulder. Maddilyn tensed, the only person who did that aside from her dad had been Jared. She better distance herself from this guy if she wanted to keep her sanity.
"It's okay. You know that, right?" He looked her in the eyes. "You were asleep. No one can control what they do when they are asleep."
She shrugged his hand off her shoulder. Why couldn't this guy just leave her alone? She felt warm tears slide down her cheeks. Not now; please not now. Kid looked at her face and whipped one of the tears away. Out of the blue he pulled her into a hug.
"Stop crying, please?" He whispered into her hair. "I'm sorry."
That made her sob harder. She was so loud that people at the station were looking her way. The more she tried to silence her tears the more she cried. Finally the bus came but Maddilyn was in no shape to get on it. Kid motioned for Liz and Patty to bring the girl's suitcases on board. Kid picked up Maddilyn and carried her onto the bus. Again, they all sat in the back but this time he had the crying girl in his lap. Her crying was quieting down now and less people were giving him looks.
He wondered why, all of the sudden, She had started crying. Maybe it was the fact he brought up her mother last night. Women were so hard to figure out.
"Kid?" Her voice rang out softly amongst the noise.
"Yes, Maddilyn?" He looked down at her. Her eyes were bright red and puffy. "What is it?"
"I'm hungry." Her voice was soft and timid.
"Hey Liz." Liz looked up from her magazine. "Could you hand me a granola bar?"
"Sure." Liz pulled out a granola bar. "Here you go."
Kid gave the bar to Maddilyn and watched as she ate silently. He wished that he could see her soul like Maka but he hadn't developed that ability yet. What business could she have in Death City? She was just a regular human. Most of them didn't even know about it. Maybe she was a mister like him or a weapon like Liz and Patty. But she would have said so by now, right? Then again she could think she was ordinary.
"Kid. You've been staring at me for a bit now." She broke his thoughts.
"Oh…." He blushed brightly. "Sorry."
"It's okay." She put her head on his shoulder. "I'm sorry for being so rude the first day I met you. It's just I'm so used to having no friends."
"It's okay."
"Really?" She looked up at him
"Really." He rubbed his nose against hers.
For a second he saw her smile but it went away quickly and she put her head back on his shoulder. Kid could tell something was wrong but he just rubbed her back. If she wanted him to know she'd tell him. Isn't that how women worked? After a while he could hear her breathing calm down. He adjusted her cape so that it covered her completely. A young mother sitting across the aisle saw this.
"You two make a very cute couple." The lady smiled. "How long have you been dating?"
"What? No, no. You have it all wrong."
"Oh…. SO she's your sister?"
"Well… Uh... No. No she's not." He blushed.
"Cousin?"
"No." The blush spread. "We're not related."
"Just good friends?" The woman wasn't believing him.
"Yes."
"Mhm." She nodded lightly and looked towards the front.
