Chapter Three: Training the Runt.
One month has passed, progress wasn't going fast, but it was steady. Day by day they got stronger, their skills were more honed, well most of the fighters anyways. The only problem Raditz was having was toughening Gohan up, that irked him, trying to train him with his mother around was nearly impossible.
She constantly wanted to have his studies done before he trained, and sometimes Gohan wouldn't be done til nearly the end of the day leaving no time for training. Raditz almost wondered if Gohan did this on purpose to avoid training, it was clear he didn't enjoy it all that much, at least not as much as he should.
Gohan loved hanging with his father, even his Uncle a little bit, at least when Raditz wasn't being a jerk, but all that hard work, it got annoying, it was making him too exhausted, he needed some rest. If he wasn't so exhausted perhaps he'd actually enjoy it, and maybe feel more accomplished.
Raditz did on purpose, he wanted Gohan to be pushed to his limits, but doing that while Chichi around was a no go. Finally, however, finally one week, One week he had the chance to train Gohan while she was gone.
One week, Goku and Chichi were both gone, and there was no one to watch Gohan...well except for Raditz. Chichi tried thinking of everyone she could to watch him, Gohan's grandfather, Ox-King was usually gone this time of the month, Chichi never knew where'd he run off to, it was almost as if he had a secret relationship or something.
Who knew where he was, and they were running tight on money, and groceries. So when Chichi and Goku went out for some work...well mostly Goku, he'd often do labor jobs once and a while in the city, just so they had a way to pay some bills, normally Ox-King had that taken care of, Chichi didn't know how, but he always had a way to pay for everything.
The only groceries they ever bought were usually non-perishables, and spices. Most meats were caught by Goku, he knew how to hunt, it was easy enough, and they lived in an area where there was no commercial hunting because Mount Paozu was too hard to trek through.
Chichi thought about having Bulma watch him, but shook her head, that wouldn't be possible, Bulma is always super busy, nor did she think the blue-haired woman was responsible...at least in a way where she could babysit. There were Bulma's parents, but Chichi didn't want to bother them with something like that.
So that was crossed off the list, Krillin was a thought, he wasn't the worst pick, if maybe he didn't live in the same house as Master Roshi, that would've definitely been it. She refused to have Gohan anywhere near Master Roshi, and since Krillin was living in the same place as him, that was crossed off the list.
It all came down to Raditz, who the whole time as they were getting ready to leave for the week, had a smug face. Man Raditz made her so angry, but she had no choice.
"See you later." Raditz waved, with a wide smug grin.
Chichi rolled her eyes, and Goku waved back. Gohan waved his parents goodbye cheerfully. Using nimbus, the two were gone in a flash, then as the door closed, Raditz looked at Gohan, with an evil look.
"Oh no…" Gohan thought to himself. He gulped, he didn't like where this was going.
"Well brat...now that your parents are gone and I'm in charge, we'll be doing things my way." Raditz said. "So go get me a drink."
"What? No!" Gohan whined. "I'm not going to get you a drink, you ca-." Gohan flinched, and stopped himself. Raditz had squeezed the boy's wrist tightly with his tail.
"Do it." Raditz said.
Gohan frowned and glared at Raditz. "I'm telling my Mommy about this."
Raditz laughed. "By all means, go ahead. She can scream like a banshee at me all she wants, by the time she and your father are home, the damage will have already been done."
After Gohan brought Raditz his drink, the boy went to do his studies, and for the first hour it was quiet. It was the same...almost, it was quieter than usual, his Mother was screaming at his Uncle nor his Father, since she wasn't here, not that her screaming at them was bad, to be fair she had a right to do so...well she had a good reason anyways.
There were no noises from Raditz and Goku sparring. Sadly, that peaceful hour ended when Raditz walked into the boy's room, he placed his hand on Gohan's desk, leaned over, and closed his notebook.
"Hey! What're-" Gohan was cut-off again.
"We're going outside runt." Raditz said. He stood up, and motioned for him to come.
"I don't want to. I want to finish studying." He pouted.
"Too bad. Get moving." Raditz demanded.
Gohan shook his head. "No. I have to finish my studies or Mom will be mad at me." He replied.
Raditz raised an eyebrow, then gave a stern look. "Is that defiance I hear in your voice?" He asked. Gohan gulped, biting his lips in response. "Tell me. What control do you think you have over me? Your parents aren't here anymore, and I am your Uncle. So while they're gone, you have to do as I say."
Gohan frowned, and huffed, following his Uncle hesitantly. Raditz pushed Gohan's shoulder with his tail, causing Gohan to nearly stumble. Gohan stopped and looked at Raditz.
"Don't be so hesitant, and go a little faster." Raditz said. "Do it again, and I'll punish you."
Gohan huffed again, quieter this time, moving faster outside. Once outside, in the backyard, Gohan awaited Raditz's orders.
"What're we doing here?" Gohan asked.
"Attending the Garden." Raditz answered.
Gohan shot a confused glance at Raditz then back to the backyard. "Garden? We don't have one." Gohan replied.
"We will now. You're gonna make it." Raditz said. He sat down up against the porch of the house.
"But we don't have any tools." Gohan complained. "And how am-"
"Enough Complaining!" Raditz interrupted. "You will be using your hands. Your father did this when he was a kid, at least that's what he told me, and I think it'd be a great learning tool for you."
Gohan looked to his hands then the yard for a second. "I can't make a garden with my hands!" Gohan whined. "That's too difficult!"
"Sure you can." Raditz smirked.
"How do you expect me to do that?" Gohan continued.
"How are you capable of answering so many questions?" Raditz replied, glaring at him. Gohan frowned in response. "Figure it out. You can dig the dirt out with your hands, then once you've plowed several long rows of dirt, you can come back to me afterwards."
Gohan dropped his jaw. "What?!" He whined. "I can't do that! You can't expect me t-" Gohan stumbled forward when he was pushed by his Uncle's tail once again. When Gohan got up and turned around, his Uncle had given him a firm glare.
Gohan sighed to himself, beginning to dig through the dirt, and only after a few minutes his hands had already felt dry. The dirt encrusted around his hands no matter how much he tried wiping it off, and even worse he got dirt all over his clothes. His mom would be so mad if she found out.
He turned to his Uncle, who was drinking a can of beer while watching him.
"What're you doing, runt? Get back to work!" Raditz shouted. Gohan frowned and continued digging out the dirt for several more hours. About three hours later, Gohan's arms and legs felt weak, he was so exhausted, hoping to be done. "Good, now you can plant these seeds."
Gohan opened his mouth. "What?!" He said. "But I'm so tired! And thirsty!"
"Yeah so is the dirt, but we can't water either of you til the seeds are planted!" Raditz yelled. "You can have a drink when you're done, planting seeds shouldn't take you more than fifteen minutes."
Gohan frowned again and did as his Uncle said, opening each packet of seeds and planting them in the dirt as he ran through the plowed fields. Where'd he even get these packets of seeds, Gohan wondered to himself.
After placing all of the seeds in the dirt, Gohan finally came back to his Uncle. "Can I take a break now?"
"I dunno? Did you make sure to shovel the dirt back in so you can water the plants?" Raditz asked. Gohan sighed and grumbled, he had to run back, shovelling all the dirt back in the ground. Again, Gohan went back to his Uncle, hoping he could stop, nope, his Uncle shook his head, Gohan still had to water the plants.
"Why can't I just spray it with the hose?" Gohan asked.
"Becaaaauuuussseee! That would be too easy!" Raditz answered. "If I made it easy then it'd be the whole purpose of this training moment."
"Training!? All you're doing is making me do chores and making me super thirsty!" Gohan growled.
"And you'll get your drink." Raditz replied, ignoring the first half of Gohan's sentence. "After you water the plants." Raditz tossed him a watering can, and Gohan quickly caught nearly falling as he did. "Now go water them, don't try to drink any of that water yourself, I'll know if you do."
Gohan huffed and pouted as he walked away, taking the watering can with him. He went down each row, going back and forth every time he needed to refill the can. He did try one time to drink from it, but Raditz caught him. Twenty minutes later, and Gohan was finally done.
"Can I please have a break now, sir." Gohan asked.
"Raditz, don't call me sir, sir is an Earthling word." Raditz answered. He stood up from his seat. "Yes you can take a break now, go get some water."
Gohan thought to argue with Raditz about the word sir, but brushed it off, he was too thirsty to care. He went inside and filled his cup from the faucet in the kitchen, drinking nearly three full cups. Then Gohan decided to clean himself off, frowning at the sight of his dirty clothes, at least it wasn't his nicer clothing or his pajamas.
Well, he tried to, he'd found out by Raditz that they weren't done.
"What do you mean we're not done?!" Gohan whined.
"Exactly that." Raditz said. "You're taking a break, only for thirty minutes. After that, we're going back to training."
"But we're all out of seeds." Gohan pointed out.
"No, not gardening anymore. We're done doing that." Raditz replied. "Just some basic training, I need to bulk you up, your arms and legs are very….limp."
Gohan frowned, he couldn't sit back down on his Mom's furniture because he was too dirty to, and he couldn't change because he wasn't done. He decided to sit on the cold wooden floor, at least that would be easier to clean.
They didn't have tv because Chichi thought television would only rot Gohan's brain, she wasn't completely wrong, and Gohan's toys were basically things to help him and his studies. So there wasn't much for Gohan to do, he figured he'd rest up for now.
"Hey Runt." Raditz shouted from the living room. Gohan limped his way into the living room. "Go get me another drink."
"But I'm on break." Gohan said, crossing his arms.
"Yeah on break…from training." Raditz replied. "You still obey my commands."
Gohan growled. "No! Why can't you do it!"
Raditz got closer, deepening his tone, he took his tail and wrapped it around Gohan's wrist, tightening it firmly.
"Because, again. I am your Uncle, and you will do as I say." Raditz's grip became tighter, making Gohan yelp. "Is that clear?"
Gohan nodded. He walked to the kitchen, bit his lips and frowned. Rummaging through the fridge for Raditz to drink something.
"Get me something fruity!" Raditz shouted.
Gohan sighed, eventually he found a drink, it was in a can, it looked like alcohol, Gohan was sure it was. What he didn't get is when they started buying all these alcoholic and well non-alcoholic drinks, Mom would only ever let him or Dad drink water. He assumed it was Raditz getting the drinks, not that he was the one earning any money.
Gohan returned with the can, it was bright red, and had a picture of an apple, some cranberries, and pineapple. Gohan handed the can to Raditz, who cracked the can open.
"Perfect." Raditz said, as he took a sip. "Fruit Punch is always a good choice." He took another sip. "Oh and your break is up."
"What?! I have at least another ten minutes!" Gohan complained.
"Your break is up when I say it's up." Raditz said.
Gohan crossed his arms and glared at his Uncle, but his Uncle made a more intimidating look, which made Gohan frown in defeat. Raditz then stood up and motioned Gohan to follow him outside the front yard this time.
"Now drop down and start doing some push-ups!" Raditz ordered. "I wanna see at least a hundred!"
"One hundred?!" Gohan dropped his jaw. "I can barely do twenty! And you want me to do a hundred?!"
Raditz shook his head, giving Gohan a look of relief. "No. I want you to start! With a hundred!" Raditz corrected. Gohan left his mouth open in shock. "After that you'll continue with a hundred sit-ups, and pull-ups. Then you'll repeat it for the next hour, then you can break for ten minutes, repeat. You'll be doing that for the next three hours, which is when the sun will begin its descent."
Gohan sighed to himself, got down and began doing his push-ups, sit-ups, and pull-ups for the next hour. Then he took his ten minute break, then repeated for the next three hours. Raditz was right on the money when he said the sun will start setting at around this time.
"I'm done, can I please take a bath now?" Gohan asked. Raditz shook his head. "Why?"
"I dunno, why are you asking me questions again?" Raditz answered. Gohan frowned in response. "Now we've gotta train your tail."
"My tail?" Gohan raised an eyebrow, sending a question glance to his Uncle, as he looked back at his tail. "Why would I d-..." Suddenly Gohan passed out. Raditz had gripped the boy's tail, not too tightly, but enough.
"I'd say an hour should be good, at least enough to keep him from passing instantly out." Raditz muttered.
One hour passed and Gohan opened his eyes, waking up, looking around, he realized he was not only in the air but couldn't move. Trying to turn his head, he noticed his Uncle on the couch.
"Oh good you're awake." Raditz said.
"W-What a-are you doing to m-me." Gohan stuttered weakly."I-I c-can't move...and I c-can barely s-speak…"
"Toughening your tail, time's just about up, you woke earlier than I expected." Raditz explained. "Give or take another ten minutes, after I'm done, you can go ahead and wash up for the night."
A smile formed on Gohan's face. "R-Really?!" Gohan asked. Raditz nodded in response. Gohan exhaled a deep breath of relief, finally he could go and relax.
"Nah I'm just kidding, there's one last thing you have to do." Raditz chuckled.
Gohan dropped his jaw. "But...But!" Gohan whined.
"No butts!" Raditz ordered.
Gohan clenched his fist, barely, but he did, he was tired, and all Raditz was doing was picking on him and making him do chores. He was super exhausted, and wanted to rest. Then, the boy snapped, and his aura flared, and power shot up as he exploded with rage, allowing him to break free from Raditz's grip.
Raditz looked surprised, Gohan was actually able to free himself. Before Raditz could even speak, Gohan had thrown his fist at Raditz's face, causing Raditz to crash through the wall next to the front door.
Gohan paused for a moment, did he just hit his own Uncle? Gohan blinked, twice. "Uh oh…" Gohan whispered to himself, looking at the whole in the wall. There was a hole! In the wall! His mother was gonna kill him! Then Raditz came to the hole, looking steamed, Gohan shrunk, and panicked, he swiftly ran out the back door.
Raditz chuckled as he watched Gohan run. "The runt actually made a mark on me." Raditz mumbled, feeling the small bruise on his face. "My fault for letting my guard down." Raditz walked out to the back door, immediately sensing Gohan's location, in a bush not far.
Raditz quietly snuck-up on Gohan. "Boo!" Raditz shouted. Gohan screamed, tried to run but Raditz caught him by the tail, then the halfbreed became dizzy, and light-headed. "Ahahahahaha! That was a good try!"
"C'mon! Please leave me alone! I just want to get clean and play." Gohan whined. Raditz released his grip, and Gohan looked shocked, blinking again.
"You did good, halfbreed." Raditz said.
"I have a name you know, why do you gotta keep calling me names, like runt, and halfbreed?" Gohan growled.
"Or I guess I could just not let you go rest, and make you do some more work." Raditz said loudly, looking up. Gohan frowned and sighed in defeat. "That's what I thought...halfbreed."
Gohan sent a glare at Raditz, but Raditz smirked in response. Finally, after all that work, Gohan could take a bath, eat dinner, and go to sleep.
The next morning, or rather the next early morning, Raditz woke Gohan up at the crack of dawn. Every time Raditz would speak, Gohan would nearly doze off, barely to keep himself from standing.
"Runt!" Raditz shouted. Gohan tensed up, standing firm. "Are you listening?"
Gohan blinked, nodding to Raditz. "Y-Yes Uncle!"
"Good. Then let's get to it!" Raditz said, walking forward. Gohan followed behind, looking a bit confused.
"Where are we going?" Gohan asked.
Raditz stopped and turned around, sighing deeply. "You weren't listening, were you?"
"Ye- I..uh..I" Gohan stuttered.
"Do not make me repeat myself ever again, this will be the one time I will." Raditz replied. "I said, we're going to the woods for a few days, your training will be much more efficient that way."
Gohan widened his eyes. "Th-The woods?!" He said, frightenedly. "But there's wild animals in there! Like bears! And Lions! What if they try to eat me?!"
Raditz shrugged, turning around, continuing to walk. "Figure it out. Have you never been on a camping trip?"
Gohan frowned and grumbled, following his Uncle. No he has been on them before, but he didn't trust his Uncle for one sec, especially not since yesterday, there was no way Raditz would keep them away. Normally, he'd be with his father who would easily scare off any big or dangerous animal.
After about an hour of walking, they'd finally made it deep enough in the woods.
"Are we done yet? My feet hurt!" Gohan complained.
Raditz gave a confused look. "Your feet hurt? You spent three hours digging out the ground yesterday, and while you could've done a better job, it was still much longer than this one hour, and you're saying your feet hurts from this?" Raditz rolled his eyes, mumbling.. "Children." as he turned around.
Gohan glared at Raditz when he responded, but Raditz ignored his glares, continuing to set up a campfire. Gohan took this time to sit down, since Raditz hadn't barked any orders at him, but then he realized something.
"Where are the sleeping bags and tents?" Gohan asked.
Raditz laughed. "That's a good one!" He turned to Gohan, and jokingly patted on the boy's head, tousling his hair. Which made Gohan really uncomfortable, the boy tried to push his Uncle's hand off but he was being too difficult. "Tents and Sleeping bags? Oh like I'd ever bring those."
"But how're we supposed to stay warm? And keep away from the rain?" Gohan questioned.
"How are you still capable of asking so many questions?" Raditz mocked. Gohan glared at his Uncle, and frowned. "The campfire will be plenty to keep you warm, if you need something to sleep up against something, you can sleep up against one of the many trees."
"I can't sleep up against a tree! There's ants and other bugs crawli-" Gohan tensed up again, feeling his Uncle tightly wrap his tail around the boy's leg. Raditz lifted him up, causing Gohan to be upside down, and gave an intimidating look.
"No more questions, runt." Raditz said. "Complain anymore, and there will be consequences."
Gohan crossed his arms and huffed. "Fine." He said. "Can you put me down now?" Raditz released his grip on the boy, and Gohan fell harshly against the ground. "Jerk." After Gohan got up and dusted the dirt from his clothes, Raditz prompted him to do something.
"Now go get some firewood." Raditz ordered.
"Why can't you do it?" Gohan asked.
"Because I told you to do it." Raditz answered. Gohan huffed and walked off, collecting multiple twigs and small branches that had fallen off. Gohan froze when he heard some noises coming from the bush, slowly turning to the bush.
Gohan walked closer, swallowing, and biting his lips. Step, step, step, Gohan got closer, when he peaked in, Gohan sighed with relief, it was a little squirrel. Then Gohan tensed, feeling something breathing on his back, Gohan turned, seeing a large mountain cat.
"Aaaah!" Gohan screamed. He quickly turned around, running as fast as he could as the mountain lion chased him. The young halfbreed ran and ran for miles, trying to get away, but the mountain lion wouldn't let up, to make matters worse, a pack of lions had appeared along the way.
Gohan had screamed for his Uncle, but to no avail, his Uncle would not come. Not because he didn't know, but because Raditz was fully aware of the situation, he did it on purpose. Gohan spent nearly two hours trying to hide and outrun the mountain lion, only after two hours did it finally give up.
Hidden by a small but dark cave, near the entrance, Gohan let a sigh of relief escape him.
"Finally." Gohan muttered. He stood up. "I wonder where Uncle went." Gohan stepped out of the cave, looking around to see where he was at, scratching his head in confusion. He was lost, and didn't know the path from the camp.
Once again, Gohan felt a warm breath at the back of the neck, instead of reacting by turning around, Gohan panicked, running away, glancing back as he did, he had a large momma black bear chasing after him. He'd also noticed the cubs that were behind the Mother, near the cave entrance.
To be continued…
A/N: Huge difference from before. Chapter Four will continue this, Raditz the Runt will be removed and officially uncanon.
