Chapter 2: Jealousy and Growth?
Meanwhile, at the White House, the President and his aide were discussing an important issue such as the Election with hopes of getting the former re-elected for another four years. Of course, it was complicated since the Newspapers were all crazy about Sonic's heroics, and not just the Newspapers, but the News on TV as well. Everyone in Station Square, if not the entire world, were all fanatic crazy over the blue hedgehog.
"This is outrageous! This can't go on, Mr. President!" Jerome exclaimed angrily, overreacting and panicking. "If this keeps up, they'll vote Sonic for President!"
"Hm. I guess I'll have to go get a real job." The President muttered sarcastically, facepalming himself.
"We've got to do something about that hedgehog!" His aide insisted.
"Now now, let's not overreact about this, just stay calm. It's not the end of the world." The President attempted to reassure, but his aide wasn't listening at all.
Jerome paced back and forth with his hands behind his back, as he wished nothing more than his boss to win the next election as he didn't want to leave the White House anytime soon. But ever since Sonic the Hedgehog began saving the world from Dr. Eggman, the teenage Mobian has been all what 98% of Mobius have been talking about. He was their hero, their idol, their inspiration. Oh, how the aide hated the fifteen year old.
'That Sonic shouldn't be a hero. He should be in High School like a normal teenager. But then again, Mobians can do whatever they want, school or not. It's almost like he's attempting to steal the spotlight.' The aide thought to himself.
Then an idea came to him.
"Of course! Sonic is stealing our reputation! We must investigate on what he's really up to that is forcing people to gain his trust! This calls for an investigation team!" Jerome declared, which made the President sweat drop while continuing. "With us finding out the truth about him and being the first to discover his secrets, there's no way you'll lose! Your re-election will be a sure thing!"
Before the President could get the chance to call him, Jerome already stormed off to prepare the investigation. The man in charge looked on worriedly before slumping in his seat with an exasperated sigh. This was not going to end well.
Later that day in the early evening after Tails picked up Sonic, Amy and Chris, taking their human friend back home at the Thorndyke Mansion to meet with his Grandfather Chuck Thorndyke, who had actually been close friends with Sonic's late uncle, kindly maid Ella who was very motherly, and butler Mr. Tanaka who was stern but not a bad man, and were having dinner of Chili Dogs. Chris' parents were out for a few weeks, so it was just them.
While leaving out the laser part for everyone else's sake, Sonic, Amy and Chris recounted Eggman's latest attempts as Tails, having seen everything from the Tornado, was shocked but relieved that everything turned out okay. They planned on telling Chuck about what happened and how he felt woozy and funny, but after the boy had something to eat, he felt a lot better. Still, not long afterwards, he felt it again while they watched TV, but other than that, he felt fine.
Passing this off as a bit of a side-effect which would hopefully wear off by the end of the day, the three young Mobians were offered to stay for the night following their and Chris' adventure, which they agreed much to the boy's happiness, under condition they would go to bed early to rest up despite that it was Spring Break. The four friends stayed up a bit to watch a movie in the living area in near the garage before finally heading off to bed, even though Chris suddenly had felt an unusual tingly feeling during dinner and during the movie.
They all decided to camp out in the guest room area, even though the twelve year old boy still felt off. The four of them brought out sleeping bags, and, after bidding Grandpa Chuck, Ella and Mr. Tanaka goodnight, they stayed up a bit more to share ghost stories even though Tails wasn't too keen on it, so he stayed close to Sonic despite that it was the blue hedgehog who was telling the last story for the night.
"...As the man crept closer and closer to the closest, he could hear the sound of something slithering and hissing. Against his better judgement, he began to think that it was a snake that crept into his house. When he opened the door, however, it was something close to one, but more hideous and terrifying." Sonic story-told, flash-light under his muzzle to make the effect of his ghost story more scary. Tails, Amy and Chris all shivered in fear.
"W-What was it, Sonic?" Chris asked, shakily.
The blue hedgehog gave a fake evil chuckle, answering. "It was a human-sized monster, with a head of a snake, but with fangs like a wolf's, ears like an elf's, eyes like a fly's, skin all slimy and dripping, finger nails as long as a wicked witch's, it's tongue like a frog's, his feet and tail like a lion's. A Hybrid of a Hybrid, an alien like no other. It spoke no words, but it's hunger for flesh of any of the planet was endless. You see, this thing would come from house to house for victims for it to eat."
"That's horrible!" Amy softly exclaimed in fear, really buying into the story now.
"W-what happened to the m-man?" Tails hesitantly asked, terrified.
"Oh, he screamed in terror." Sonic shrugged nonchalantly, continuing. "Any guy would logically shut the door and run, but he was so terrified that his body refused to listen to him. The reason for that is because if one looked into the monster's eyes, their bodies would be frozen, and unable to escape. That's what happened to the man, and unfortunately for him, the monster struck."
The trio gasped in horror, as the blue hedgehog concluded. "Like the Big Bad Wolf, but more frog like, the alien extracted it's tongue which stuck to the poor victim's chest, and in that instant gobbled him whole and swallowed him up. The last thing that was heard from him was his doomed screams, before the monster fled to continue it's hunt. After that night, though, neither one were ever seen again. The End."
"Man, I haven't heard a ghost story that scary since last year's Camping Trip!" Chris stated with a sweat drop, still shivering.
"Ooh! I'm gonna be having nightmares for months." Tails shivered, hugging himself as he felt the goose bumps crawl through his skin.
"I think we can all agree that Sonic's story overtakes ours." Amy smiled weakly, knowing that her story she told earlier now sounded like a kid's fairy-tale by comparasion.
Even though he was proud of himself with telling such a scary story, Sonic shrugged sheepishly when he saw just how terrified his friends were. "Sorry. Think I went a little overboard."
Before they could say anything else, however, the door suddenly opened and, their minds still filled with the imaginations of the blue hedgehog's story, quickly became paranoid and thinking that it was the monster, saw the silhouette of a tall figure with the lights off.
"AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!" Tails, Chris, Amy and even Sonic who aimed the flash-light at the figure, all screamed in terror. The figure likewise screamed as he flinched while shielding his eyes with one arm. The screams eventually stopped and the four youngsters then realized that it was only Chuck who, feeling his heart pound over the unexpected scare, glared at them disapprovingly.
"Now, what are the four of you doing up at this hour? Are you trying to give this old man a heart attack?" Chris's grandfather asked.
Despite the disapproval, Sonic and his friends all sighed in relief, before Chris apologetically responded. "We're sorry, Grandpa."
"Sorry." Sonic, Tails and Amy chorused apologetically.
"We were sharing scary stories with each other, and Sonic just finished his and we thought you were the monster from his story." Amy explained.
"Yeah, you just made it even more scary, Chuck." Tails added.
Sonic shrugged with a nervous grin. "Think I definitely went overboard. Even I was freaked out when you came in, and that's saying something."
"Well, do try to get some sleep. It's quite late, so no more ghost stories for the night." The old man instructed, getting over the scare a little bit.
Despite the rather lack of supportive response, Sonic and his friends nodded in agreement and bid Chuck good night once more before settling into their sleeping bags, huddling together as all of them, even the cobalt young hero, huddled together to make themselves more comfortable for support in case they had any nightmares.
But as the three Mobians and their human friend slept peacefully, neither were aware that despite that the TV and the lights were off, Chris's body, which had shown strange signs of electricity sparkling but no on had even noticed, were shooting off waves of static electricity. The waves were very small, even as they slowly grew more intense in strength and visibility. At the same time, Chris's body glowed a bright blue, the same kind of glow he had earlier in the day when he'd been hit by Eggman's laser. Also like earlier, Chris's body was being covered very faintly in static electricity, the same kind that was swirling around the devices.
Suddenly, after a brighter-than-usual glow from all around the boythe two electrical fields collided and he very slowly grew in size. Despite the growth spurt, everyone was still asleep. Though this caused his sleeping bag to rip and shred and even with Sonic's sensitive hearing, the blue hedgehog was happily dreaming about a field of Chili Dogs, thus he couldn't hear what was going on. Afterwards, Chris and his clothing(since he hadn't bothered to change considering it had been a long day), stopped growing and he was now up to eight feet tall.
Surprisingly, even though Sonic, Tails and Amy were moved, sleeping bags and all off of the sleeping Chris, they all remained fast asleep.
Meanwhile, having crash landed back into his secret base, Eggman was recovering from his injuries while growling in frustration as his robotic minions were patching him up.
"I hate that hedgehog. Not only he gets in the way, but he has too many friends that stand up to him! I want to crush them all!" The evil scientist growled, before wincing in pain as his left arm was bandaged up.
"How was it that the laser hit Chris but didn't even given him bad burns?" Decoe asked, curiously.
"Not even Sonic would've survived that, let alone a normal human." Bocoe added.
"It was a malfunction cannon! You idiots said it was already done!" Eggman hissed angrily.
"We did install it." The yellow robot protested, holding his hands up in surrender as did his friend.
"We even made sure it was fitted in properly." Bocoe added.
Eggman looked ready to tear the two robotic clowns into pieces when he just slumped into his chair and grumbled. "Oh, never mind. Let's just call it a day and come up with a new evil scheme to get that hedgehog and built my Egg Empire."
While this was happening, Orbot and Cubot had just finished cleaning up the wrecked Egg Mobile with two cannons broken into pieces. Well, the one that was supposed to vaporize Sonic and spared Chris' life was sitting innocently by the side, all fixed up while the other was too damaged to even fix.
"If the boss finds out we had to replace the vaporizing laser with the growth laser instead, he'll scrap us for certain." Orbot muttered worriedly, as he and his companion pushed the fixed up cannon to the side.
"Well, on the bright side, at least it malfunctioned, so it wouldn't even make that Chris kid grow into a giant. Besides, the shrinking ray only works on shrinking giant things back to normal." Cubot tried to say optimistically.
The red-round robot sighed, shaking his head in exasperation.
If only they, the other robots and their creator only knew how wrong Cubot was.
Amy shifted in her sleep before the sound of birds tweeting from outside of the room arose her from her lovely dream of her on a date with Sonic. Blinking her eyes awake despite that it was still unusually dark, the twelve year old hedgehog unzipped her sleeping back and stretched her arms up, covering her mouth with one hand to muffle her yawn.
"Why are the birds tweeting at this late?" The pink hedgehog muttered to herself, but as she sat up, she noticed hints of daylight judging by the shadow of the windows. What it made more strange was there was huge shadow of a lump...of something quite big in a lying position. It looked human, but something wasn't quite right.
"Huh? What the...?" Amy blinked, slowly turning around nervously and saw Chris...except that he was...huge! Rubbing her eyes and wondering if she was dreaming, she blinked and saw that her eyes weren't playing tricks on her.
The human boy had literally grown taller overnight! She began to sweat in shock, her eyes widening.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!" Amy's shriek echoed through out the entire area which scared off some of the birds from the trees, and woke up everybody, even the now eight foot all Chris who sat up startled, as did Sonic and Tails who yelped in fright.
"Amy!? What's wrong?" Sonic exclaimed, quickly wide awake and fully alarmed. He and Tails stared at her while the pink hedgehog pointed a quivering finger at what was in front of them, speechless. The two looked and their eyes widened while Chris, completely oblivious of his growth-spurt, stared back in confusion.
Needlessly to say that the blue hedgehog felt like screaming himself, unable to believe what he was seeing. For that moment, Sonic thought he was dreaming a very weird dream.
"AAH! What the!?" The teenage Mobian cried out in alarm, dumbfounded.
"AAAAH! H-How can this be!?" Tails screamed, leaping at least a foot up in the air as he too couldn't believe it either.
"G-Guys? What's going on? And...why do you and the entire room look smaller?" The mini-giant Chris asked, hesitantly, noticing that everything did look smaller than he last remembered, at least from his point of view.
Sonic sweat dropped, pointing out while still in shock. "Uh, it's not us, buddy. You've gotten bigger."
"Huh?" Chris blinked, before looking down at his hands, then at his friends and then at the room. Realization hit him like a ton of bricks as his eyes widened in sheer shock. "No way! H-how did...? Sonic, how'd I get this big!?"
"You got me." The blue hedgehog shrugged, completely clueless. "I have no idea how'd you ended up like this. This sort of thing is too much like in the movies."
"Tails, what happened to Chris? How did he get so big?" Amy asked, hysterically.
Tails shook his head, "I-I can't explain this. This shouldn't be possible! There must be some kind of outside source that's caused this to happen."
'Erm, okay...There goes that idea.' Sonic thought to himself.
"Oh man! What am I gonna do? I can't let anybody see me like this!" The mini-giant twelve year old boy cried out, gazing at his hands again. If anyone saw him this big, he was in serious trouble. Not just with Ella and Mr. Tanaka, or his school friends, but pretty much everybody in Station Square.
"Don't panic! I'm sure there's a...uh...reasonable explanation for this...we can figure this out, and I bet Tails and Chuck can fix this." The blue hedgehog told him.
Before the group could try and figure out the very strange growth Chris has gotten himself into, the door was knocked and all four of them flinched. As it began to quickly open, all four thought at the same time knowing that they didn't have time to hide the now mini-giant Chris to prevent him from being seen.
"Uh oh..." Sonic, Tails, Amy and Chris all said in unison.
The door opened and reveal, half to their relief, was the promised sight of the boy's grandfather who stormed in, looking quite alarmed.
"What in the world happe-" The old scientist cut himself off when he saw the sight of his now really tall grandson and needless to say, he was quite shocked. "AHH! C-Chris!?"
"Uh...H-Hi, Grandpa." Chris waved, nervously.
Things had just gotten even more complicated.
A/N: Uh-oh! Chris's big problems have just began! Hopefully I'll be able to finish this before the end of the year. But I'm not so sure at this point.
See you later!
