Not that he would normally care about one of the kids acting a little...off...but this was Matt, his Matt, and it had been a full week of nothing but Matt defending Near...his Near! Yes, in Mello's mind, Near was as good as his too, since he would beat the shit out of anyone else who thought to beat the Albino up for him. He was a great piece of work though, Matt; telling him not to hurt Near anymore, as if trying to save the boy from an impending doom. But Mello let it go, thinking that Matt would grow tired of playing hero with the antisocial boy. Nope...not a chance; a week in, and he's still spouting the same shit he was seven days ago.

"I'm just saying, who knows what kind of stuff could happen in the future, do we really want to bully someone who could potentially become one of our greatest assets?"

He actually sounded smart when he said this crap, but that's exactly what it was, crap. "Matt, what the hell is going on in that head of yours!? You've never cared a moment of your life for what happens to Near, and now..." he pointed to a small but growing stack of un-played games next to Matt's bed, "you aren't acting like yourself, Matt. Next thing you know, you'll be telling me to be nice to Linda!"

Matt looked at Mello in complete shock, shaking his head back and forth in horror at the very idea of being friends with Linda. "No! God no...I can't stand that girl. Look...Mello. Please, I've never asked for anything."

That was a lie. He'd asked for a lot of things, I'd just never done anything to get them for him, except for his birthday gifts, that is. "What is it you want me to do, Matt...what is it you want exactly?" He needed a detailed explanation for this one, since, no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't comprehend the extensity of his request.

"I want us to try and get along with Near..."

Yep, he couldn't understand it. He couldn't comprehend it. Mello stared blankly at Matt, and for the first time in the History of Whammy's...Mello was at a loss for words. Shaking his head, trying to break himself free of the confused haze in his head, he finally spoke, "Why though...why do you want us to get along with him; why him?" Mello hated this, he sounded desperate.

Matt sat down on his bed and tossed the handheld game console he'd been holding to the side. Looking Mello straight in the eyes, he noted the look in them and sighed, "I'm sorry Mel...I know I'm not making any sense, and it's frustrating for you...just, please believe that I know what I'm doing. I know that, this will bring the best outcome in the end. I can feel it. If we don't somehow try to get to know Near, or befriend him...we will both..." Matt closed his eyes and shook his head, "please..."

Mello gave, he couldn't fight with Matt. He didn't have the energy for it, or the will. Sitting down beside him, he knocked his fist into the auburn red haired boy's shoulder with a cold glare accompanying the lighthearted punch. Grabbing the straps of Matt's goggles, he pulled them till they fell from Matt's head. Why he insisted on covering up those gorgeous Irish green eyes was beyond him, he could ask for the world and with a glance god would kneel s=down and present it on a golden platter before Matt. "...I'm making no promises." Mello said softly, staring into Matt's eyes as he did, "I won't beat him up, or look for reasons to yell or argue with him...I will...try...to get along with Near. Just, be patient. I can't just push aside so many years of hating him."

Matt smiled, "Thanks Mel..."

"Mmhm...but this one request adds up to like...nine or ten birthday wishes."

Matt frowned, "Make it eight...I really do want that car at some point."

Mello rolled his eyes, "Whatever. Come on, we're going to be late for class,"

"I'm coming, I'm coming."

It was in class that Mello would truly be tested on his ability to work with Near, as the teacher seemed especially perceptive today, and noted how Mello continued to stare at Near, more so than usual.

"Mello, since I'm clearly not doing a good enough job keeping your attention, then perhaps Near will have better luck...the class will be participating in partner cases, in which case files will be distributed and you and your partner must come to the correct conclusion on your own devices with the little evidence you have." The teacher ignored the aghast look on Mello's face, a smug smile of her own graced her lips. "Mello and Near, come up to the front to retrieve your file, then you may leave to start on the project. Note that you will only have a week to finish it."

Mello glared at the woman as he walked up to her desk to get his and Near's case file. Near was walking quietly after him, his eyes as devoid of emotions as they always were. Both left the room without a word to one another, the eyes of their fellow orphans could be felt following them until the door shut behind them.

"Damn it...!" Mello glanced at Near from over his shoulder and noticed the boy was glancing away from him, twirling a lock of his white hair as he did. 'This is never going to work...'
