Disclaimer: I do not own The Covenant. Just Sophie.
It's been six months since Reid's confession to possessing the Power. Six months since admitting he'd felt the seduction of the Power, the undeniable pull to use more and more everyday. Sophie convinced him to go to N.A. meetings. No, he didn't have an actual addiction to any narcotics, but he might as well call it a drug the way he abuses it. He had to admit, it was helping. Of course everyone there is under the impression he's addicted to heroin but he was really proud of his 6 month coin.
As he lay on his bed he tossed the coin into the air as new thoughts ran through his mind. Would he have any set backs? Would new dangers arise? Would he be able to keep Sophie safe? His phone beeped with a new message, interrupting his thoughts and messing up his literal coin toss. The message was from Caleb, a photo of him and Sarah on the ruins of Machu Picchu the smiles on their faces outshining the sun that illuminated the world around them. More time traveling meant less time bossing him around. Or 'worrying' about him as Caleb liked to call it. He grinned, it was nice to know his friends were happy. Even Pogue and Kate seemed happy. Well, they still argued like a married couple but he'd opened his own garage while she was finishing her bachelors. And considering the very large rock weighing heavily on her left hand, it seemed Pogue planned on making their daily arguments a permanent activity. Tyler spent his free time from school chasing after Melody. They complimented each other well and he seemed happy which is really all that mattered.
Reid swung his legs over the side of the bed, pocketing his coin as he stood, snagged his jacket and left his house. The car ride was quick, the walk was even quicker. Upon entering the campus building his feet already knew where to go. It was like second nature. As he rounded the corner that would take him to the art studios he could hear angry voices. Sophie. Looking up he saw her, clearly upset. Arms folded. Angry tears running down her face. The man before her was easily recognizable. Her uncle that had warned him to stay away. Why now?
As he approached, their argument went from a muddled mess to clear words. "You're coming home with me. After telling your mother about that waste of trash you've been hanging out with is a heroin addict she's demanded I bring you back home and that's exactly what I'll be doing!"
"He's not addicted to heroin he goes in support of his friend! And my life is none of your business! How dare you try to get my mother on your side and dictate how it is I'm supposed to be living. I'm not going anywhere with you!"
When the professor grabbed her by the arm Reid was already between them, slamming his fist into Professor Andrews nose, throat and stomach before shoving him roughly to the ground. He could hear Sophie scream behind him, something about stopping but it wasn't sinking in, all he knew was he'd kill anyone who hurt his girl. "What the fuck do you think you're doing?! Don't you ever put your hands on her again!" He growled, his eyes turned black and he took a step towards her uncle.
"Reid, stop it's okay I'm okay!" Sophie cried, fresh tears running down her cheeks as she got between Reid and her uncle who was coughing and sputtering from lack of air, blood running down his mouth and chin from his nose.
Cupping her face, Reid swiped away her tears, his eyes melting back to their normal ocean blue hue.
Wheezing and shaking as he struggled to stand, Professor Andrews glared at the couple, more so at Reid. "I'll have you expelled for this Garwin! You're done! I'm pressing charges too, you damn druggie!"
"Go ahead. College isn't really working out for me anyways you pudgy bastard." He glared back and smirked. "But remember this, you laid hands on her first. Self defense, asshole."
Reid put his arm around Sophie and led her away. They both ignored her uncle as they left, his empty threats following them down the corridor.
An hour later they were curled up in his bed, her head laying on his chest as he comforted her. "It'll be okay, Sophie. I promise. I try not to use this card because honestly, I don't care to but, he can't touch me." She turned her face up to him. "Your family name can't protect you forever, Reid."
His response was interrupted when her phone rang, 'Mom' illuminating the screen as it vibrated and chimed, begging to be answered.
Dear Readers,
I'm so sorry it's been so long. I'm sorry the chapter is so short. I don't like missing deadlines. I don't like making promises I cannot keep.
I know I don't really have to explain myself, but I would like to. In 2014 my mom's illness got really, really bad, she'd been sick for a very long time but it got worse as the year progressed and I've been taking care of her since her diagnosis. She fought hard and I'm not ashamed to say that everything was put on the back-burner in order to be by her side. The beginning of that year she was in and out of the hospital and it took it's toll.
She passed away July of 2014 and everything I love died with her. It's been really hard, getting back into everything she used to support me so fiercely on. I cannot tell you how many times I would sit down at my laptop, write up half a chapter, delete it and go lay back down just to escape the pain.
I'm sorry I left these stories unfinished. I'm sorry I let you all down.
I hope to be back fully now. I will no longer make promises I cannot keep. But I do promise to try.
Thank you for your continued support. I really do appreciate it.
I love you all, dear readers.
XoXo
W.S.
