Rengar looked at the stones of the canyon. What a strange place was that, actually. It had all the kinds of things an army would need. Weapons. Armor. Even a few staves. But nothing to his liking, he knew. Only one thing was going to tempt him into coming here. And it had been able to tempt him into coming.
Draven and Gordoth had both asked him to go and search for Taric. Well, part of this was his own wish. He wanted to go out and feel the thrill of the hunt again. But sadly a few times he had to do things he didn't like. The plague jungles were one of those things.
He had, of course, already ventured there before, but now it was different. The dead were restless and it was quite a challenge to pass unseen. Although they had felt the warmth of life, they were not able to find him, because of his skills in the area of stealth. After a good while in evading groups of undead that were tempted in searching for him, he was able to reach the relative safety of the mountain pass. There, he had been once again been able to find the gem knight's stench. So now he was on his way to Northern Valoran.
The remnants of mighty armies were scattered all around the pass. It was really interesting, to see all those new armor styles, weapons and more tools of war. His eyes traced the borders of the horizon.
He saw a creature that was not supposed to be here. It was a green mantis, walking calmly through the rocky waste. Rengar placed his paw two feet from the insect. The mantis started climbing the hunter's limb, until he lifted it. Then, the creature stopped. Rengar looked at it with the usual interest which he showed towards that kind of insects. On the fields he had learned a lot of ways to dismember a mantis, yet all those which he saw were nothing more than defenceless creatures. Compared to the bug he wanted to smash.
It as the Voidreaver. Kha'Zix. That creature, that bug which was nothing more than the next tropfy. Oh, how much he wanted to dismember it once again, then to skin his pelt and place it on his necklace. The stupid bug was going to die one day, but it was sadly not going to be today. Rengar looked at the forest before him. He was happy that the rocky waste he was in was going to be replaced by a much more pleasant view. Or at least area.
After leaving the mantis on a leaf, he started jogging towards a tree. This was one of his favourite things to do. Climbing the tree, he reached one of the higher branches, he prepared himself on it. His legs twitched and he leaped from it. After flying a few feet from the tree, he landed on another one. Repeating that, he continued to move from tree to tree.
This was a thing he liked doing. But when something stabbed his left leg, he lost his footing and started falling down. Grabbing a branch, he was able to soften his fall, and landed on his feet. Looking around, he didn't see anything which could be of danger for him, then proceeded to inspect his leg. The object which had stabbed his limb was a spike. A really familiar, vorpal spike.
He spat on the grass and focused. His body started shifting under the strength of his focus, and golden light consumed it, creating a stealth for the pridestalker. Instantly, he felt how his senses were honned, and the figure of a creature he hated from the depths of his stomach.
The mantis was in it's active camouflage, the giant claws on its hands pointed towards the ground. The little wings on his back were twitching now and then, anticipating the moment to leap against its prey. And, at last, the spikes on its shoulders were rapidly increasing in size. Rengar smiled. In that moment the bug was in a bad position, because it didn't know where he was, while he could feel even the slightest move of a bee from one hundred feet.
Crouching close to the ground, he prepared. Sustaining the need to roar at the moment he leaped, the hunter left the ground and flew a few feet, towards the bug. His blades made contact with the neck of the voidreaver, and it leaped as fast as it could, but the bolla which flew from Rengar's hand was swift in catching it. The wings of the stupid bug were now useless.
Cursing under his breath that he had not been able to rip off the mantis' head, Rengar stood up and looked at his nemesis. Kha'Zix shook his head and stared daggers at the pridestalker. A sly smile curved his lips when a blood trickle run down the bug's throat. He knew that he was at the advantage.
The Hunt was on. Kha'Zix started to circle Rengar. The pridestalker smiled.
"What is it, Bug? Not so brave now, are we?" Rengar teased. The voidreaver ran towards the pridestalker and they crossed their blades. Kha'Zix swung fast and hit his opponent's shoulder. Rengar roared, stabbing the bug's left limb.
A shredding sound rose from the depths of Kha's throat, and his eyes widened. Swinging the claws of his hands, he attempted to stab Rengar's chest, but the hunter sidestepped and threw another bolla at the mantis. The tool tied around the voidreaver's legs and he fell to the ground.
Rengar laughed, this was the moment he expected for the time he had been an enemy to the useless creature. Making a wide rainbow with his weapon, Rengar removed Kha'Zix' left limb. Screaming in agony, the mantis disappeared. Smirking, the pridestalker looked at the blood trail which the voidreaver left. He saw the bollas falling on the ground, releasing the creature.
The pridestalker leaped right, just in time to dodge the claws which flew towards his head. Not loosing any time, he stabbed the mantis in the chest. Kha'Zix gave a heave, but three spikes flew from his shoulders towards Rengar. The hunter wasn't fast enought and the shots didn't miss. Stabbing his shoulder, paw and leg, the mantis was able to nearly take an edge in the battle.
Rengar leaped towards the bug, who was unprepared and they both fell to the ground. The hunter spat in Kha's face and started mauling it. Breaking a little of the chitin shell on his head, Rengar was pushed back by the voidreaver's legs. He lost his footing and fell on his back, but rolled over fast enough to avoid a stab which could be fatal.
The bug stabbed his stomach, savoring in the blood which flew from it. Rengar spat once again, grunted and swung the huge knife in his hand, beheading the mantis. The lifeless chitin shielded body fell on the grass, covering it with blood. Rengar breathed deeply, and sighed. He kneeled and discarded a bag from his belt.
It contained bandages and some healing potions, which he was able to get his hands on in the grand escape from the Institute. He swiftly covered his wounds with the cloth and drank one of the pots. He took his skinning knife out from another satchel, he went to the corpse and carefully discarded the pelt of the slain mantis. He then took his amulet off and placed it on the ground. All the bones and teeth on it were then covered with the pelt. Rengar took the necklace and tied it around his neck. He was the winner.
Spitting on the body of Kha'Zix, Rengar left, walking in the direction of the Freljord. There he was going to fulfill his task.
