Whew! This one took a lot longer to write than I originally planned! Sorry to keep you guys waiting to long, but here it is! The next update to my Yu Yu Hakusho crossover! This one'll be a bit more mellow, more comedy, less fighting. Mostly though, it's got a bit of a slice of life kinda theme in this chapter. A bit cheesy but hey, I don't know an anime that doesn't have an episode with more personal growth and less fighting. Anyway, enjoy!

Chapter 6 Heart of Hearts

Yusuke had returned to the Guild Hall late that night. It was almost time to lock up, but he managed to make it in time before Mira left for the night. After going back into his apartment, any energy he had left was spent washing up in the shower. The walk back to Magnolia was long and annoying, but the time he spent thinking about what Erza had said to him was what really took it out of him. Normally, he'd be able to shrug off any harsh criticism as easily as wiping off crumbs stuck to his shirt. But the way she said it, and how she looked at him, made it all the more difficult to try to put it out of his mind.

As he exited the shower, he continued to process it all as he dried his hair.

"Ugh, what does she know"? Yusuke said to himself as he tossed the towel aside, "That guy would've turned her into swiss cheese without a second thought, and yet she says I'm the one who was out of line?! Tch".

After changing into a clean t-shirt and sweatpants, Yusuke plopped himself down on the bed and lit a cigarette. He took a long drag and watched as the smoke he exhaled floated up towards the ceiling.

"It's not like I planned to cripple that punk, just disarm him", Yusuke said thoughtfully, "So what if I put more power than what I was going for into that blast? That still doesn't give her the right to write me off like that".

Yusuke sighed as he placed the cigarette into an ashtray on the night table and turned off the lamp. Laying on his back and staring into the darkness, he sighed as he settled into the mattress.

"Well, no use in dwelling on it, I guess", Yusuke said as he shut his eyes, "Though I can only imagine what the old man's going to have to say about it".

Guild Master's Office – The Next Day

"IF YOU'RE AIMING TO TEST MY PATIENCE UNTIL ITS EXCEEDED PAST ITS' LIMITS, THEN YOU'RE ON THE RIGHT TRACK"!

Whatever part of Yusuke that was still asleep as the day turned to afternoon, it was awake now. Makarov had received Erza's mission report and, upon finishing it, was absolutely livid. Having trained with Genkai, Yusuke was no stranger to lectures, let alone getting chewed out by an elder. Though it didn't really help that the tone was enough make his teeth rattle. The Guild Master sat at his desk with a brooding look aimed at the Spirit Detective who stood in front of it.

"Look I don't see what the big deal is", Yusuke said with a shrug, "I mean, nobody died".

"Oh is THAT what you're going for"?! Makarov fumed, "Yusuke, I don't think I need to remind you that the Magic Council is out to shut us down! I didn't form this investigation unit to add to their conviction, but to dissuade them from doing so"!

"I'm aware of that", Yusuke said coolly.

"Your actions beg to differ", Makarov said sternly as he took a deep breath.

As he let out a long sigh, his glare softened.

"I understand you're used to doing things your way, but you need to remember you're a part of something bigger than that now", Makarov said in a soft yet firm tone, "You can't keep going at it alone anymore. You're a member of this guild, and we're all here to help you".

"Well maybe I don't want your help", Yusuke said indignantly, "Ever thought of that"?

"Don't be so quick to exclude assistance, my boy", Makarov said gently, "Isn't that something your master would say"?

Unknowingly striking a nerve, Yusuke sent a glare Makarov's way.

"How the hell would I know"? Yusuke growled, "The old bat doesn't say nothing anymore, she's DEAD, remember"?!

"Look, I didn't mean...", Makarov began.

"No, I know exactly what you meant, old man! And I don't give a damn"! Yusuke said angrily, "Don't ask me to do your stupid crap for ya if you got a problem with the way I do things"!

"Look, I understand that you're upset, but you...", Makarov attempted to say.

"No, you only think you understand, but you don't"! Yusuke retorted, "Look, I get that I made a mistake, alright, so what more do you want from me"?!

"I want you to understand that you can't go it alone like you used to"! Makarov said insistently, "I'm aware you've got a lot of talent, but you need more discipline if you plan on being a member of this guild"!

"Man, you old fogeys are all the same", Yusuke sighed shaking his head as he turned towards the door, "You think you can change me into what you want if ya keep giving me a hard time".

"Where are you going"?! Makarov asked.

"I'm sorry, I thought this conversation was over", Yusuke said sarcastically, grabbing the door handle and pushing it open.

"Get back here this instant! YUSUKE"! Makarov shouted.

But it was too late. Once again, more energy had been wasted on deaf ears as Yusuke slammed the door to the office and went back down to the bar. Erza, who had been hiding in an alcove near the door, had been listening in on their conversation. After taking a moment to gather her thoughts, she went over to the door and entered.

"Master", she said, getting Makarov's attention.

"How much did you hear"? The old man asked knowingly.

"I heard enough", Erza said, crossing her arms, "He really seemed to react when you mentioned his master. Up until now I didn't think anything could phase him".

"He may put up a front, but in the end, he has the same weaknesses as us", Makarov said, "Genkai's passing has certainly taken its' toll on him. I can only imagine how hard it is for him to continue on without her guidance".

"What should we do"? Erza asked.

"Nothing", Makarov said simply.

"What"?! Erza said in disbelief, "Master, we can't allow him to continue like this. The pain he is harboring is making him rot from the inside out".

"My, my, I didn't know you cared so much for him", Makarov said in a joking tone.

Erza took a step back as her face turned a light shade of pink.

"It's NOT like that"! Erza said sharply as her ears grew warm, "I just don't want him to get us into any more trouble, that's all"!

"Calm down now", Makarov chuckled, "I was only trying to lighten the mood".

"Hmph", Erza pouted, turning away.

"Joking aside, all I'm asking is for you to be patient with him", Makarov explained, "Though much time has passed since the day he lost her, the loss has greatly affected him. More often than not, when someone experiences the death of a loved one, they're led astray by their sadness and pain. Yusuke is a rather unique sort, because he has seemingly chosen to face this pain head on by himself. As admirable as that is, the problem with it is that he's come to believe that this challenge is better done by himself, with no help. We cannot let him forget that he is not alone anymore. I'm counting on you and the others to be there for him, so that he might remember that".

Erza had been listening diligently as the master spoke. There was much truth in what he was saying. She remembered how closed off she initially was as a child when she first joined Fairy Tail and how much she had come into her own thanks to the support she had from her friends and newfound family. Though it pained her to admit, Makarov was right. As belligerent and rebellious as he was, Yusuke was a member of the guild now. More than that, though, he was just another misguided soul, lost in the darkness brought about by the death of his master. She knew she couldn't just go on knowing that and do nothing. With a heavy sigh, she turned back towards Makarov.

"I'll do my best", Erza said, "Though, knowing Yusuke, it won't be easy".

"You've certainly got your work cut out for you, my dear", Makarov noted, "But if I didn't think you'd be able to handle it, I wouldn't have put you two in the same team in the first place".

"Yes, you're very perceptive", Erza said with a smile, "Is there anything else I should know"?

"There is", Makarov said, folding his hands, "His former superior, Koenma, gave me a brief summary of Yusuke's profile. There are plenty of things I'm sure he hasn't spoken of, and I can understand why. Though if I'm being honest, it's not really my place to tell you. I'm sure he will tell us whenever he's ready".

"I hope so", Erza said softly, "Not just for our sake...but for his too".

Magnolia – Later that day

For some people, nostalgia can be a relatively enjoyable feeling. For Yusuke, however, it was anything but that. As he walked down the street with a half full beer bottle, he scowled as he tried to put it out of his mind. His little chat with Makarov brought back more than just memories of all the tedious and repetitive lectures he got back home.

"Tch, stupid old man with his sappy sentimental bullshit", Yusuke said taking a swig from his drink, "They think they can all tell me how to live my life, just like everyone back home. Thinking I'm some kinda charity case. They don't even know me! Hmph, no matter where I go it's the same old thing; people getting on my case, giving me a hard time, I didn't even ask to be here! Why the hell would Koenma even send me here in the first place"?!

His train of thought was lost when he heard the sound of laughing. Not just any laughing, though, it was a sort laugh that carried a sense of mockery and ridicule, two things that made Yusuke's stomach turn. After rounding the corner, he came upon a small group of 3 or 4 boys much younger than him. The three bigger ones, who seemed to be the source of the mean laughter, stood in front of the smaller one who was kneeling on the ground. The boy on the ground looked about 5 or 6 years old. He had straight, dark purple hair with bangs that covered part of his forehead. He wore a dark green t-shirt with a large yellow "S" on the front, light orange pleated shorts, and light blue sandals. Yusuke could also see a small cut on the boys' lip, as well as a bruise on his right cheek. It didn't take a detective, Spirit type or otherwise, to figure out this kid had been singled out as the target for the three bullies.

"Say that again, ya little runt"! Said the kid in the middle.

"Man, you gotta be crazy to run your mouth off like that", The kid on the left said with a sneer.

"What'd ya expect? He's the son of a wizard, they're all crazy", mocked the third kid.

The boy, Romeo, glared at the bullies as they continued to belittle his father.

"It's not true"! Romeo exclaimed clenching his fists, "My dad's a great wizard! And he's greater than you'll ever be"!

"Why you"! The leader snarled picking Romeo up by the front of his shirt.

"HEY"!

The three bullies, including Romeo, turned around to see Yusuke standing there with an indifferent look on his face.

"Isn't it a little early to be making all that ruckus"? Yusuke said in a half-interested tone, "Why don't you little brats head home before your lunch gets cold"?

"Beat it, old man"! The leader said, dropping Romeo back on the ground.

"Yeah, get lost"! Said one of his friends.

"Old man"? Yusuke thought as an angry tic mark appeared on his forehead.

"Ha! All bark and no bite, I guess", said the leader, "You're not all that tough, are ya"?

"Oh no"? Yusuke said with an evil grin.

Without wasting any time, Yusuke downed the last of the beer that was in the bottle he carried. After he had completely emptied it, he let out a long belch. Wiping his mouth with his sleeve, he held the now empty bottle for the kids to see.

"Watch the bottle", he instructed.

With a loud grunt, Yusuke threw it into the air. Romeo and the others watched with anticipation, all of them wondering what Yusuke had planned. With a loud hum, Yusuke's right index finger glowed with Spirit Energy. After taking aim, he shot a baseball sized blast of Spirit Energy aimed at the bottle. The bottle exploded with a loud pop as the blast made contact with it. While Romeo looked on in awe at the display of power, the other three boys looked like they were about to wet their pants. After all, this was a guy who had just managed to make enough power to blow up a glass bottle with just one finger.

The three hecklers turned back to see a rather bemused Yusuke.

"This guy's not foolin' around"! One of them said fearfully.

"Let's get outta here"! Cried the leader.

The three bullies ran away as fast as their feet could carry them. Relieved and somewhat surprised by the recent turn of events, Romeo looked over at Yusuke with a bewildered look in his eyes. This young man, a perfect stranger, appeared out of nowhere to help him in his time of need. Never before had he ever experienced such a random act of magnanimity from some random stranger on the street.

"They didn't hurt ya too bad, did they"? Yusuke asked looking over at Romeo.

Romeo was still too surprised to speak. He shook his head "No" in response.

"Well, that's good", Yusuke said nonchalantly.

Yusuke looked over to Romeo with a rather forlorn look on his face. He could see that they left more than just a physical mark on him. Despite his still occurring feelings of irritation, as well as any misgivings he had about the idea, he felt that he couldn't just leave him like this.

"Y'know, uhh, I just remembered I've got more cash on hand than I meant to before I left my place", Yusuke said in a disinterested attitude, "And I was planning on getting some ice cream. Mind lending a hand"?

Magnolia Ice Cream Parlor – Minutes Later

As Romeo sat on the corner outside the shop, licking away at his Strawberry cone, he could feel almost all his troubles beginning to dissipate. Yusuke, who sat about one foot from where Romeo was, smiled contentedly as he held his own Ice Cream cone.

"Mm, thanks for buying, mister", Romeo said as he worked away at his frozen treat.

"Eh, forget it", Yusuke said with a shrug, "So what'd you do to get those little punks on your case, huh"?

Romeo's smile disappeared as he pulled away from his ice cream.

"Guess it's not really my business, though", Yusuke said, turning away.

He slowly started licking at his ice cream cone before Romeo finally said something.

"I just...didn't like what they were saying about my dad", Romeo said softly.

Yusuke looked over at Romeo and saw that his eyes were beginning to well up.

"They're always saying that the wizards of Fairy Tail are losers", he continued, "But...my Dad's not like that at all. He's a great wizard, I know he is. He's had to work extra hard too since my mom left us".

This immediately got Yusuke's attention.

"So I said to them what my dad told me to say the next time they started picking on me, but they just won't let up", Romeo said, choking back a sob, "I know I shouldn't take what they say seriously but...".

Romeo was unable to continue as he focused on trying not to cry. With a soft sigh, Yusuke leaned back on his free hand as he looked up at the sky.

"I was a little younger than you when my dad left", Yusuke said in a lackadaisical tone, "I don't really remember much about it, though. All I know is that he left me and my mom to fend for ourselves".

Romeo's sadness was replaced with surprise as he looked over at Yusuke.

"Your dad"? Romeo asked.

"Mhm", Yusuke said with a nod, "I never really understood why, and I still don't, I guess. Doesn't really matter that much to me anymore, and why should it"?

"He's just like me", Romeo thought as he looked up at the Spirit Detective.

"Even though she can be a real pain in the ass at times, I guess I gotta give my mom some credit", Yusuke continued, "I mean, she could've dumped me at an orphanage without a second thought. With how she drinks, I sometimes wish she had. I don't know, I guess she must've cared enough to keep me around. Cared more than my dad, at least".

"So it was just you and your mom, by yourselves"? Romeo said, pulling his legs up to his chest.

"Yep, all the way up to the day I left home", Yusuke said, giving his ice cream cone another lick, "Though if I'm being honest, I was never always that quick to defend my mom the way you defended your dad. I don't regret much but...well, y'know".

Romeo nodded his head in reply. It was a rather strange turn of events, but the young boy had managed to find a kindred spirit today. Even though they were like night and day, Romeo felt a connection to Yusuke. They both grew up knowing the hardships of an absent parent, which can be hard for anybody.

"Does...does the hurting ever go away"? Romeo asked.

"I don't know about that", Yusuke said with a shrug, "But it gets easier to deal with. Just takes time I guess".

A smile formed across Romeo's face as he looked at the Spirit Detective. As bad as it was earlier, the fact that he had made a new friend sort of made up for it. With his confidence renewed, he went back to his ice cream. Later, when they had finished, Yusuke bid him farewell and started making his way back to the Guild Hall, unaware that his newest fan was tailing him. It wasn't until he was halfway there that he finally sensed Romeo's presence.

"You can come out now, I know you're following me", Yusuke said without turning around.

With his cover blown, Romeo slowly stepped out from behind the building he was using for cover.

"Look, don't you have somewhere better to be"? Yusuke sighed as he turned to see Romeo.

"Well yeah, you're heading to the Fairy Tail Guild, right"? Romeo asked, "I'm heading there too, to see my dad".

"Your dad's a Fairy Tail Wizard"? Yusuke asked.

"Uh huh", Romeo said with a nod.

"Well, ain't that a coincidence", Yusuke muttered, "Alright, you can tag along with me. Just try not to slow me down, alright".

"You got it"! Romeo said enthusiastically, running to Yusuke.

So, the two continued on their way to the Guild Hall with Romeo at Yusuke's side.

"You must be new to the guild", Romeo said, "My name's Romeo".

Yusuke held back a snicker, lightly amused at the boys' name while at the same time wondering who Juliet would be in this world.

"I'm Yusuke", the Spirit Detective said, clearing his throat.

"So what kind of magic do you use"? Romeo asked.

"I don't have any magic kid", Yusuke replied simply, "I'm just tough".

Romeo couldn't help but smile, knowing well enough that only someone truly impressive could ever say that.

Fairy Tail Guild Hall – Later

"What the heck happened to your face, Romeo"? Natsu inquired.

"Yeah, you look awful"! Happy added.

Upon arriving, Romeo was greeted by the rest of the Investigation Unit, whilst Yusuke had left for the bar for another beer. Natsu and Happy's tactless, though well meaning, observation hadn't gone unnoticed either.

"Man, way to stick your foot in your mouths, guys", Gray chided.

"Just being honest", Happy said with a shrug.

"Like you wouldn't have done the same, ice prick", Natsu said with a frown.

"I'd have been more subtle about it than you, stupid pyro"! Gray retorted.

"Guys, please! Not now", Lucy scolded.

"Who did this to you, Romeo"? Erza asked gently, kneeling down until she and Romeo were at eye level.

"Just a bunch of jerks, that's all", Romeo said with a shrug, "But it's okay, Yusuke saved me".

This caught the attention of the five mages.

"Wait, Yusuke saved you"? Gray said in disbelief.

"Yeah"! Romeo said brightly, "He walked over and scared the pants off 'em! It was awesome! Then afterward, he cheered me up and bought me ice cream. He's a really nice guy".

None of the others could believe that they were hearing. Who could blame them though? The idea of someone like Yusuke, the same man who had stormed a warehouse and attacked an entire room full of arms dealers, and nearly killed one in the process, going out of his way to save a kid was beyond outlandishly farfetched.

"It's worse than we thought guys", Natsu said.

"Yeah, those bullies must've bonked him on the head and caused him to have a crazy hallucination", Happy said in agreement.

"I think I'll have to agree with you on this one", Gray said with a nod.

"That's enough", Erza said sternly, catching the doubting trio off-guard, "Let's not be quick to jump to conclusions".

"But Erza, think about it", Lucy said hesitantly, "Do you honestly think Yusuke would really do something so...nice"?

"Well, why not"? Romeo said curiously, "He's part of the guild now, right? So, must be a good guy".

The 5 mages and their blue feline companion all had thoughtful looks on their faces. It had been a while since they had heard a claim so black and white, especially from one so young. But they knew Romeo was fully prepared to stand by his claim. They all turned their attention to Yusuke, who was now at the bar enjoying another pint of beer while laughing along with Cana. While the others watched with dubiety, only Erza remained uncertain. Thinking back on Makarov's words, Erza knew that someone had to take the neutral position.

"Given Yusuke's past actions, we're all aware of his nature", the red-haired wizard said at last, "But...if what Romeo says that it's true, then I believe him".

"What"?! The other 4 said in disbelief.

"Erza! You were there! You saw what he's like, he's crazy"! Happy said.

"Even so, I believe that there be more to him than meets the eye", Erza said firmly.

"So, are you saying he's secretly...kind"? Lucy asked, still not getting it.

"I'm simply saying that he's more complex than we originally thought", Erza elaborated, "That apparently there's more to him than the side of him than what we've already seen".

"So what? We should just cut him some slack"? Gray asked.

"Yes, perhaps, but not too much", Erza instructed as she looked over at the Spirit Detective in question.

Meanwhile, at the bar, Yusuke was on his third mug, already beginning to feel a slight buzz. It may not have been the same as what he got back home, but it was good enough. As he swallowed the lukewarm liquid, he heard some people sit down in the stools on his left and right. He turned to see Natsu and Happy on his right Gray on his left, with Erza and Lucy next to Gray. All of whom were looking over at Yusuke.

"What"? Yusuke said, wiping his mouth, "Why you guys crowding me"?

"Just thought we'd join you, if that's okay", Lucy said nonchalantly.

"Eh, suit yourselves", Yusuke said impassively shrugging his shoulders as he tilted back his mug and took another swig.

"Romeo told us how you helped him", Erza said.

"He didn't actually use the word "helped", did he"? Yusuke asked.

"Actually, he said you saved him, like you were his hero", Lucy said with a smile.

"Hero, heh. That's uh..that's a good one", Yusuke chuckled.

"Why's that so funny to you"? Gray asked.

"Because, Mr. Nude, I'm not exactly the hero type", Yusuke replied in a snarky tone.

"What was that"?! Gray exclaimed angrily.

"Gray, your clothes", Lucy deadpanned.

"Gyaaahhh"! Gray yelped as he saw his currently half naked state.

"What do you mean you're not the hero type"? Erza asked curiously.

"You know damn well what I mean", Yusuke said sternly, "You saw what happened back in Onibus, that's how it always is. A guy that's only down to rumble for the sheer fun of it can never be a hero".

Erza and Lucy both frowned at Yusuke's explanation. Even though there was some truth to what he was saying, something didn't feel right in him denying any altruism all at once. Perhaps this was his own way of saying that it was no big deal. Whatever the reason was, the fact that Yusuke was bowing out from any praise spoke a lot for his character. Erza couldn't help but smile with the knowledge that despite the attitude he always seemed to showcase, Yusuke was truly a decent individual. The others seemed to catch on to this too, as they had smiles of their own.

"If that were true, why did you help Romeo"? Lucy asked curiously.

"Well cause...y'know, the kid wasn't about to stand up and take charge", Yusuke said defensively, "And besides, I just...felt like it".

"Awww, the big bad Spirit Detective's really a big ol' softy~", Natsu cooed teasingly, throwing an arm around Yusuke's shoulder.

As the others laughed, the young half human found the teasing from his Fire Wizard comrade less than humorous.

"You makin' fun of me, punk"?! Yusuke raged as he slugged Natsu across the face.

"Saw that one coming", Gray noted.

"Same here", Lucy said.

"Aye", Happy piped up.

Natsu corrected himself as he looked over and scowled at Yusuke.

"So, that's how it is, huh"? Natsu said as a wicked grin formed on his face, "Alright, I'm all fired up now! Let's go"!

"Bring it on, bitch"! Yusuke exclaimed.

And so, as par for the course of Fairy Tail members, Yusuke and Natsu began to scrap once more. Although, this one almost seemed less heated. Though, as they started knocking over tables and chairs as they tussled and grappled each other, it wasn't less destructive. The other Fairy Tail members noted this as they shook their heads with humorous looks on their faces.

"Well, they're at it again", Lucy sighed.

"Yeah, but this time they took their fight to the Guild Hall", Happy noted in an exasperated tone.

"I suppose it had to happen sooner or later", Erza said with a smile.

"Geez, one battle hungry idiot is bad enough but now there's two", Gray said rolling his eyes.

The two fighters halted their fight as they each cast an angry gaze at the Ice Make wizard.

"Say that to my face, ice freak"! Natsu fumed looking up from his fight with Yusuke.

"You're next, ya naked degenerate"! Yusuke exclaimed.

"What'd you call me"?! Gray shouted indignantly.

"Gray, your clothes again", Lucy deadpanned.

"Whaaa"?! Gray gasped as he looked down to see that, once again, he was down to nothing but his boxer shorts.

Bonk!

His surprise was interrupted as a wooden mug was thrown at him and hit his head making a slight hollow sound.

"What do you know? His head IS hollow enough to make a noise like that", Yusuke said with a smirk.

"Heheheh, told ya", Natsu chuckled.

"That tears it", Gray growled as he clutched his forehead.

As Gray rushed towards the pink haired mage and the spirit detective, the one-on-one fight turned into a three-man brawl, each of them alternating punches from one to the other. Resulting in even more of a mess filled ruckus than the previous one. Many of the other guild mates laughed, while the ones who were more familiar with the 3 opponents, such as Lucy and Happy, wore bemused expressions as sweat dropped from their heads. Erza, however, had a more neutral expression. But as she looked over at Romeo, who had been watching Yusuke with the same awestruck wonder he had when he told them today's event, she couldn't help but smile, knowing that more often than not, children were the best judges of character.

Later That evening

After the fight, the rest of the Investigation Team spent the rest of the afternoon lounging around with various activities, such as eating, drinking, shooting the breeze. Yusuke didn't partake much in the conversations, aside from an occasional comment, either derogatory or normal. He had also begun to learn a little more about the rest of his teams' powers, like Gray's Ice Make magic and Lucy's Celestial Spirits. He was particularly fascinated by Erza's requip magic, which allowed her to call forth any type of weapon or armor from her own pocket dimension. Learning that the Scarlet Mage was basically a walking arsenal greatly impressed him.

After the Q&A with his teammates had ended, the Spirit Detective engaged in some target practice with Bisca and Alzack. Being Fairy Tail's resident and seasoned gunslingers, the two wizards had offered to give Yusuke some tips on improving his accuracy. Upon deciding that it wouldn't hurt to work on his aim, the young half born human accepted their tutelage. As the three of them stood in front of a makeshift shooting gallery, the two marksmen wizards listened in on the details of how Yusuke's Spirit Gun worked.

"So, you just picture the trigger in your mind and then imagine pulling it"? Bisca asked.

"That's about it", Yusuke said with a nod.

"Well there's your first problem right there", Alzack noted.

"What do you mean"? Yusuke asked curiously.

"One of the basic ways at getting a better shot at your target. You don't really pull the trigger", Bisca began.

"But squeeze it", Alzack finished.

"I doubt that that's something that I can manage", Yusuke said, raising a brow, "I mean, there's no actual trigger and I can't really say that I can tell the difference".

"Maybe it'd be best if we added some muscle memory to it", Bisca noted, "I think by feeling the difference, you'll be able to imagine the action differently, which could then improve the performance of your Spirit Gun. Alzack, give the kid your piece".

The black haired gunslinger mage nodded as he swiftly pulled out one of the magic guns from his side holster. Twirling it on his index finger, he handed it to Yusuke, who took it by the handle.

"Now go ahead and take a shot at that target we set up for ya", Bisca instructed, pointing over at the glass bottle sitting on the barrel 5 feet away from them.

Looking over at the bottle, Yusuke aimed the gun at it. Once the guns' sight had aligned with the target, he pulled the trigger, making the gun go off with a loud bang. The magic bullet failed to hit the mark by 3 inches. Yusuke scowled as he stared at the mark left on the wall.

"Alright, now try again, but this time make sure that you squeeze the trigger, not pull it", Bisca said.

"Press the back of the handle with your thumb, then slowly apply pressure to the trigger", Alzack explained.

"Okay, fine", Yusuke said, raising a brow.

Yusuke did as instructed and, as the hammer of the gun clicked, the bullet flew from the tip of the barrel straight at the bottle.

Crash!

Yusuke's eyes widened as he saw that the bullet made it's mark. It had went clean through the neck of the bottle, leaving only the bottom half.

"Ha! Look at that! Annie Oakley eat your heart out"! Yusuke cheered.

"Annie who"? Alzack and Bisca said confused.

"She was a famous sharpshooter back where I'm from", Yusuke explained, "Y'know, you guys were really onto something. I really could feel the difference".

"Now just imagine if you apply that to your Spirit Gun", Bisca pointed out.

"Knowing the difference in how you execute the shot should serve you well", Alzack added.

After practicing some more, Yusuke went back to rejoin Natsu and the others. Romeo, who had stayed with the group for most of the evening, occasionally asked Yusuke about his abilities. Though hesitant at first, Yusuke reluctantly told Romeo about his abilities, like his Spirit Gun. The young wizards' son took particular joy in wanting to hear about the stories of Yusuke's adventures. The other members of the Investigation team, who were also listening, couldn't help but also be curious about Yusuke's past endeavors. Making sure he didn't overwhelm the others, he started out simple by only telling them how he faced the 3 thieves and the Artifacts of Darkness, making sure to leave out a few key details.

"So these guys stole powerful weapons from the Spirit World and decided to wreak havoc on your home"? Lucy asked in fascination, "That's crazy".

"I thought it was pretty cool how you tried to stake that one guy with the top half of a tree", Natsu noted with excitement, "You're way stronger than I thought"!

"Meh, Goki was pretty much a mindless lackey compared to the others", Yusuke said with a shrug, "Hiei was the one who gave me the most trouble".

"I'll say", Gray said, "The speed of your Spirit Gun is nothing to scoff at, and he just dodged it at point blank range? It's unbelievable".

"Believe it, if it hadn't been for the Forlorn Hope, he would've finished me off in an instant", Yusuke said in a grim tone.

"This Hiei must be incredibly fast to be able to dodge your attack", Erza noted.

"That's an understatement", Yusuke muttered.

"At least you were able to get back what was stolen and you saved all those peoples' souls", Happy said, "I'd say it was all worth it".

"I guess so", Yusuke said with a shrug.

"He sure knows how to play the humility card, doesn't he"? Lucy said to Gray.

"Guess he's not into being in the spotlight", Gray concluded.

"Anyway, if it weren't for the Forlorn Hope, I wouldn't have been able to beat him and save the hostage", Yusuke concluded.

"It sure was lucky he didn't know you could do that with the Spirit Gun", Lucy noted.

"Well to be fair, I didn't know I could do that either", Yusuke said with a shrug.

Everyone else at the table either went slack jawed or fell over in surprise.

"Are you saying you risked someone's life, as well as your own, on a theory"?! Gray said in disbelief.

"It worked, didn't it"? Yusuke said nonchalantly.

"That's not the point, you dummy"! Lucy said irately.

"Look, I stopped the bad guy, saved a life, AND learned a new trick all in one day", Yusuke said, retaining his cool hand attitude, "Y'know what I call that? A pretty damn good day".

While most of the team sighed in exasperation, two others remained neutral. Even though Yusuke retained a relaxed demeanor towards any and all consequences, Erza couldn't help but admire his positive outlook. Romeo simply marveled as, once again, the Spirit Detective managed to impress the young wizards' son.

Fairy Tail Guildhall Entrance – Later

As the evening sun began to turn the sky to a pale orange, Romeo and his father, Macao, stood outside the entrance with Yusuke. The Spirit Detective was bidding them farewell for the day after their time to head home had arrived.

"Thanks again for what you did for my son today, Yusuke", Macao said, "I really appreciate it".

"Meh, it's no big deal", Yusuke said with a shrug.

"But it is, though"! Romeo insisted, looking up at Yusuke, "You're a really great guy, Yusuke"!

The young half born human arched a brow as he looked down at the young boy. As much as he declined to believing such a statement, he couldn't help but smile at Romeo's naivety.

"Sure kid, whatever ya say", Yusuke said, "And hey, if ya plan on stopping by tomorrow, we'll play a game of catch".

"Yeah, okay"! Romeo said enthusiastically.

"Well, we'll see ya then, Yusuke", Macao said with a smile as they turned to leave.

"See ya", Yusuke said with a wave of his hand as they began to walk away.

"Hey, Yusuke"! Romeo said, turning around.

Yusuke was just about to open the door to the Guild Hall when he heard Romeo call for him.

"Umm...If you were me...what would you do if those bullies came after you again"? Romeo asked nervously.

Yusuke raised a brow as the young boy relayed his question to him. Normally, it wasn't in him to give out advice, especially to kids, but as he got to know the kid today, he couldn't help but see a small part of himself in in Romeo. There was also part of him that envied Romeo; the innocence that remained in the wizards' son was proof that he had yet to encounter the harsh and unforgiving place that the world could be. If anyone had been there for him at that age, then maybe, just maybe. Yusuke pushed the thought from his mind as he turned his attention back to Romeo.

"Kid, I've dealt with plenty of stiffs in my time, and one thing that they can't stand is someone who beats them at their own game", Yusuke said evenly.

"What do you mean"? Romeo asked.

"The reason they give you such a hard time is because they know you'll let them", Yusuke answered, "Because they think you won't fight back. They see that you're afraid, and that's what they'll keep coming after. You wanna know what you gotta do? Just don't be afraid".

"That's it"? Romeo said in confusion.

"That's it", Yusuke replied with a shrug, "When it comes down to it, they're all just talk. If you never fight back, they'll keep at it. You know what I mean"?

Romeo paused for a moment. After thinking it over, he slowly nodded his head in understanding.

"Yeah", he said softly, "I think I do now...thanks Yusuke"!

"Anytime", Yusuke said with a smirk.

Romeo smiled as he and his father turned and slowly began to make their way back home. As they left, Yusuke couldn't help but wonder what was going through the boy's mind. Even though he loved a good fight as much as the next guy, he couldn't say that he'd ever want anyone else to follow in his stead, especially someone as young as Romeo. That said, part of him hoped that what he said would give Romeo the tools he needed to move forward. His thoughts were interrupted as he looked over and saw the rest of his team standing at the door, looking at him with smiles on their faces.

"What"? Yusuke said arching a brow.

"We never would've expected that from you of all people", Erza said.

"Expected what"? Yusuke said confused.

"Come on, man, don't play dumb, we all saw you", Gray said with a smirk.

"Yeah, for a guy who comes across as a surly street punk, you're pretty good with kids", Lucy added.

"What? Oh, come on, I was just giving the kid some advice, just because I gave him a hand doesn't automatically make me a "nice guy" or anything", Yusuke said, slightly embarrassed.

"Actually, I think that ship already sailed", Happy joked.

"And what do you mean by that, furball"?! Yusuke shouted indignantly.

"Come on, you just can't stand it whenever people see you drop your guard, ya big softy", Natsu teased.

"Hey, I got your softy right here, Pinky"! Yusuke growled, holding up a clenched fist as he grabbed the front of Natsu's vest.

"Alright, settle down", Erza scolded gently, "Yusuke, Bisca and Alzack were calling for you. They set up some more targets".

"Hmph, yeah whatever", Yusuke said coolly, "Your lucky I gotta practice, otherwise I'd mop the floor with ya, dragon breath".

"Anytime you're ready pal", Natsu said daringly.

As Yusuke walked away with his hands stuffed into his pockets, his team couldn't keep the smiles off their faces.

"Not very good at hiding his emotions, is he"? Happy observed.

"He's good at denying them, that much is true", Gray said.

"Hard to believe the guy who rushed a bunch of arms dealers is the same guy who helped a little kid who was getting picked on", Natsu said, placing his hands behind his head.

"It sure is surreal", Lucy agreed with a nod.

"Is it"? Erza said curiously, "Because I believe it only stands as proof".

"Of what"? Lucy asked, turning to Erza.

"Proof that I was right", Erza replied, "That there's more to Yusuke than what we were originally led to believe. That maybe beneath that rough exterior, there is a decent human being deep inside him".

"Gotta be hidden pretty deep in there, though", Gray joked.

"Aye, sir", Happy said in agreement.

Magnolia – The Next Day

There were more things that Yusuke disliked than enjoyed. But having cheated death more than once, the number of things he did like began to steadily increase. Things such as the feeling of the bright sun when it was high in the sky at noon time. Normally he'd sleep in until noon, but after waking up a little earlier than usual he figured it wouldn't hurt to get some fresh air. Today would prove to be one where he'd be grateful that he didn't sleep in. After rounding the corner from the Magnolia bakery, he came across a familiar scene. Once again, there standing 3 feet away from him was Romeo, surrounded by the 3 bullies from the other day.

"Hey look, the wimpy little wizard's son is back", said one.

"Seems like he didn't learn his place last time, guess we gotta re-educate the little pipsqueak", said another.

Yusuke raised a brow as he backed behind the corner of the building he stood in front of. Though part of him wanted to interfere, he knew the importance of moments like this better than anyone.

"Look shrimp, when I tell ya to stay off my turf, then you'd best listen", said the leader, raising a fist.

"Yeah? And what if I don't wanna, huh"?! Romeo said defiantly.

"Well then I hope your deadbeat dad can afford your hospital bills"! The bully exclaimed.

As the bully reared back his punch, Romeo stood his ground and kept his glare fixed on him. As the first punch was thrown, Romeo quickly jumped backwards, avoiding the punch. Then, to the bullys' surprise, he started running towards him as fast as he could, yelling at the top of his lungs. The bully and his two stooges were completely caught off guard at the young boy's defiance. Then, to Yusuke's surprise, Romeo leapt towards the bully and, with seemingly surprising strength, he punched the bully square in the nose, knocking him back with enough force that made him land on his behind on the ground. Clutching his nose, which started bleeding like a faucet, the bully looked up at Romeo with a newfound sense of terror.

"You...you HIT me"! The bully said in fear.

"Yeah, so what"?! Romeo shouted, holding up his fists as if challenging the bully.

"This kid's crazy"! Said one of the bully's friends as he helped him to his feet.

"Let's book"! Said the other.

Seeing no other option, the bully and his two lackeys quickly ran away, leaving Romeo the victor.

"Yeah, I'm crazy, alright! Cause I'm the son of a Fairy Tail wizard! And some day, I'm going to be one too"! Romeo shouted in reply as he watched them run away.

While other passerbys watched with surprise or disbelief at the young boy's outburst, Yusuke couldn't help but smile.

Fairy Tail Guildhall – Later

"And they just ran away"? Lucy said in disbelief.

After Yusuke had decided to return to the guild, he told his team what happened with Romeo. While Natsu, Happy and Gray all smiled warmly at Romeo's act bravery, Lucy was more discouraged. Meanwhile Erza held a neutral look throughout the story.

"Yep, they all fled with their tails between their legs", Yusuke said with a chuckle, "Heheheheh, it was awesome, you should've been there".

"I fail to see the humor in this, Yusuke", Lucy said sternly, "Romeo's a sweet kid, he shouldn't be fighting".

"What're you talking about, Lucy? I think it's great the way Romeo handled himself", Natsu said.

"You can't be serious"! Lucy said incredulously

"Come on, Lucy, winning your first fight is important for every young boy", Gray added.

"You never know how strong you are until you see for yourself", Happy added.

"I should've known you guys would be happy about this", Lucy sighed.

"Lighten up, blondie", Yusuke said, leaning back in his chair, "Besides it's important for the kid to learn to stand up for himself".

"For once, I agree", Erza spoke up, "Now that Romeo has proven himself to those bullies, he'll be able to move forward with a more stable sense of confidence in himself. Who are we to take that from him"?

"Well, I guess you're right about that", Lucy said hesitantly, "I just hope he doesn't go picking fights like some other battle happy lunkheads I know".

"Who do you think she's talking about"? Natsu asked Gray.

"No idea", the ice make wizard replied.

The other members of the team sweat dropped as they groaned at their comrades' ignorance.

"Hey Dad"!

The team turned their attention to the front of the guild as Romeo ran through the front doors straight towards his father's table.

"Whoa, slow down there, son", Macao said, "What's got ya all excited"?

"I did it, Dad! I showed those bullies that I wasn't going to let them push me around anymore"! Romeo said elatedly.

"Well now, do tell", Wakaba said, suddenly interested.

"I did like Yusuke told me, and showed them that I wasn't afraid", Romeo said with a smile, "And then, I slugged one of 'em right in the face"!

"What"? Macao said surprised.

"Well now, looks like your kids shaping up to be a real contender, Macao", Wakaba joked, "How does it feel knowing your kid won his first fight"?

Macao had a frown fixed on his face. Even though he didn't want his son fighting, he also knew how important it was winning your first fight. So, with a heavy sigh, he looked over at his son.

"I can't say I'm happy that you got into a fight today, Romeo", he said seriously, putting a hand on his son's shoulder.

The young boy's smile suddenly dropped at his father's response. The older wizards' frown then turned upright into a smile.

"But I am glad you finally stood up to those bullies", Macao said warmly, "I'm proud of you, son".

Romeo beamed with pride and, to his father's surprise, tackled Macao into a hug. The older fire wizard smiled as he returned the hug. After they departed, Romeo ran over to the table where Natsu and the others sat.

"Hey guys! Did you hear? I had my first fight today! And I won"! Romeo said excitedly.

"Congratulations, Romeo", Natsu said warmly.

"Yeah, way to go"! Happy cheered.

"Not bad kid", Gray said with a smirk.

"Just don't go looking for trouble from now on, alright"? Lucy said with a small smile.

"We're all very proud of you, Romeo", Erza said, crossing her arms, "The confidence you earned today will take you far".

The young boy nodded as he took in the adulation from his elder peers. Looking over at Yusuke, he smiled.

"I did just what you said, Yusuke", Romeo said, walking up to the Spirit Detective, "I stood my ground and I wasn't afraid. I couldn't have done it without your help".

Yusuke looked down at the young boy who gazed at him with a smile fixed on his face. He then looked over at his teammates who all seemed anxious to how he would reply. Normally he'd brush off any praise with a snide remark. But then he figured he'd play it cool. Just for today, though.

"Sure kid, whatever you say", Yusuke said with a smile, "And hey, congrats on winning your first fight".

"Thanks"! Romeo said, "Hey, can we have that game of catch now"?

Later, outside the guild hall, Romeo and Yusuke tossed a ball back and forth to each other.

"Alright, now see if you can get this", Yusuke said, cocking his arm back.

He then tossed the ball with a good portion of his strength straight at Romeo, who caught the ball with a loud grunt. Even though he caught it, the force of the impact nearly winded him.

"Phew", Romeo grunted, "Wow, you're really strong".

"You're not the first to say that", Yusuke said with a smirk.

"Well someday, I'm going to be just as strong as you", Romeo said with a grin, "Cause I'm going to be a Fairy Tail wizard too one day"!

"Heh, you've got a long way to go before you're as strong as me kid", Yusuke chuckled, "But hey, dare to dream".

Romeo smiled as he tossed the ball back to Yusuke. As they played, the members of Yusuke's team all watched from the side. Erza, in particular, kept a watchful eye on Yusuke. As the game went on, she could see the change in Yusuke's behavior. There was something different about him today. The others couldn't tell, but Erza saw that, for a moment, Yusuke slowly began to let down his guard. The smile he had on his face wasn't his typical snide smirk or even one that showed he was relaxed. This was a genuine smile, that signified a sense of joy in the Spirit Detective. In that moment, she knew that here fears were unjustified and that there truly was more to Yusuke than just the battle craven, indifferent lone wolf persona that he seemingly hid behind.

"I suppose, in the end, not even Yusuke can hide what truly lies within his heart of hearts", Erza thought as she watched the boys play.

And there you have it! Yusuke's got himself a new fan and Romeo's now on the track to becoming a Fairy Tail wizard. For those of you who have watched/finished Fairy Tail, you already know what to expect. Anyway, I was looking forward to writing this one because, well, I wanted it so that the Investigation team (Natsu, Happy, Gray, Erza, Lucy) could see the complexity of Yusuke's personality. Also, as much as I love the rough & tumble lone wolf Yusuke can be, I also appreciated how, like in the manga and anime, there were also times where he could put away the warrior side and just relax. I also really thought that Yusuke would be a good example for Romeo because of how alike they are. They both have an absent parent in their life and, for those of you who know what that's like, it can be hard adjusting to that kind of life, especially when you don't have someone around who can relate to you on that. It's moments like this that will help shape Yusuke into the new man he'll be moving forward in the story. This event will help him to understand that, despite the hardships of life, there'll always be moments where you can find joy. Whether it's helping a friend or saving the world. This will be one of the moments that will help bring down the walls that Yusuke put up and help him to become more of a team player, as opposed to the lone wolf.

Okay so, the poll regarding the next chapter is still open and will be closed after the next update.

Up next: Yusuke gets his first taste of real magical combat as the War between Phantom Lord and Fairy Tail begins.
