"Telekinesis and telepathy." Doc looked up from his work to look at me. "We can't get a hold of Thor yet, so we don't really know what it was in London, but your genes are evolving. I'm not sure how much but..." He took a deep breath and gestured to Tony, who had an Iron Man glove on. "We'll see. I just want to make sure I have every information right. What does your telekinesis allow you to do?"
"Move objects with my mind and I kind of gotten good at using it on humans." I cleared my throat. "In London there was this matter tornado and I slowed a portion of it down for Thor to get inside, so I can slow things down as well."
"Probably speed them up too, like a push," Tony told Bruce while flexing his fingers. Doc wrote that down, his fingers fast on the keyboard.
"I can also shoot guns with my power and as it is like an extension of my body, well here my mind, the weight I can carry can increase the more I practice."
"Telepathy?"
"I can't communicate with my mind but I have quite a large range for mind reading. It's the only thing I can do really, but because I have a large range it can be useful radar."
"We should have gone through this when you arrived," Doc mumbled, shooting Tony a look. My godfather rolled his eyes.
"Yeah yeah..." Tony shot me and I instinctively deflected it. "Meh, nothing interesting." I frowned, offended.
"Because being in a Coca-Cola can is interesting?" He raised a brow.
"A soda can? Did you just compare my suit to a soda can?"
"I sure did old man." He falsely gasped.
"Did you hear that Bruce? Young people have no respect nowadays."
"I am not getting in the middle of this."
"Anyway, that old man's going to come up with something to turn you into a radar." I shot Tony an interested look. "I'm interesting now?" I shrugged and he shook his head, exasperated. "What are thoughts?"
"The voice in your head?" Iron Man looked heart broken.
"No one outside of the Avengers will know you're my goddaughter." I rolled his eyes at his antics. "No Addi, thoughts are electro-chemical-reactions in the brain. I think that from that I can...you know, find a way for you to receive the thoughts and focus on some particular ones."
"Like a radio?" I asked him. He grinned.
"There's still hope after all!" He turned to Doc. "Did you know I almost had a heart attack when she told me she wanted to study History in college?"
"I can imagine Tony."
"I imagine like headphones or earbuds. I mean you used to always listen to music super loud before."
"That's not good," Doc said with a disapproving frown. I pointed at Tony.
"He's not telling you that I could not turn off my telepathy and kept hearing everybody's thoughts within a kilometer diameter. It was turning me crazy." He didn't know what to say. I sat on the floor, leaning back on my hands. "Anyway, wh..." I raised my hands in front of me when Tony shot me again, but I didn't deflect the shot.
Black matter was in front of me. I blinked in astonishment and it crumbled to the floor. It vanished a few seconds later.
"Okay I couldn't do that before," I told them blankly.
"Alright JARVIS, get ready to analyze that." He shot me again and the same matter appeared.
"It seems that Miss Carter is materializing the energy around her Sir, and that this materialization has the same characteristics as the floor."
"How can it have the same characteristics?" Tony wondered out lout.
"Addison, were you touching the floor?"
"Yeah?" They exchanged a look.
"Her power would save the characteristics of what she touches?" Tony suggested.
"Probably, and then the telekinesis must bring together matter so thin it's invisible to the naked eye."
"Hum...I don't know of any matter that just adopts another element's characteristics."
"Well maybe now Thor would be useful." Their talk over, they looked at me.
"So…training?" They both nodded.
"We don't know what it is, but you need to control it for everyone's sake." I grabbed Tony's hand and he pulled me on my feet. "Bruce, contact McCoy, he'll be interested. We need to know how long you can produce these...things. I mean, if we're right and that you touching the floor gave the matter its characteristics, it means that if you were to touch Cap's shield..."
"I would copy the vibranium." Tony grinned.
"That's my girl!" He pulled me in a quick embrace with one arm. "And you use katanas, imagine if I build you handles that adapt to your new ability." I gasped.
"Don't give me dreams Stark."
"I make dreams come true Carter." He looked at Bruce above his shoulder. "Hey, I think I'm going to order pizza, you're eating with us or here?"
"I'll join you later." We left the lab.
Tony was done ordering through JARVIS when we reached the living-room. I froze in my steps.
"JARVIS, what did I tell you about unexpected guest?"
"To announce them Sir, but Director Fury did not want you to know."
"I don't even know why I'm surprised," Tony muttered, stepping in front of me. "You better not be here for another suicidal/redemption mission."
"Calm down Stark, I'm not here for that." Fury looked at me. "How did you find yourself in London?" Tony turned toward me.
"Actually yeah, who were you with?" I opened my mouth and looked at Fury.
"Did you tell them what the information I sent you implied?"
"Not everything, that's why I came all the way from Washington. Stark, what did you find in those files you stole from us?"
"I don't see what you're talking about."
"Don't make me repeat myself Stark, SHIELD is compromised already."
"Compromised? That's ironic."
"Tony..." I mumbled under my breath. I cleared my throat. "It's HYDRA." He didn't even bat an eyelash.
"I'm not even surprised they're still around. So, what do you want Fury? Take down SHIELD?"
"No, and I won't act recklessly like you Stark. Something of this magnitude needs to be handle carefully. Carter, who were you with?"
"James Barnes' spitting image." They both looked at me, stunned. "At the lake, Aksel wanted him to kill me and he almost did but obviously did not. Ultimately, he saved from drowning in the lake and refused to let me go back to you because he..." I gulped. "He was ordered to protect me. I don't know by whom, but that's what he told me. He followed me to London because I had no idea where to go and he was taken back." I took a deep breath. "He was strong like Steve. He was enhanced, no doubt about it, and had a metal arm." Fury seemed to realize something.
"There is no way Barnes survived, he fell off a train in the Alps," Tony mumbled.
"Should we tell Steve?" I wondered.
"Captain Rogers is busy with missions with the STRIKE team," Fury stated, leaving no room for debate. "I'll handle it. Don't say a word about this to anyone." He walked between us and left. I exchanged a look with Tony.
"Something else?"
"Huh...Aksel was working with someone else but I don't know who." I pursed my lips. "Dad's name was mentioned." It got his attention.
"David?" I nodded. "He was a great physicist but he never really stood out for his works." I shrugged. "Unless Project PEGASUS..."
"What?"
"It was a project where the SHIELD, NASA and US Air Force worked on the Tesseract. Not a good idea."
"Trying to control a power that you don't know never is. But if the government is involved I'm far from surprised." Trask did use mutant corpses to come up with the Sentinels in the seventies after all. "Is it really okay to not tell Steve that...you know, his best friend may be alive?"
"Not really no, but Fury doesn't want him to know and if HYDRA really is in SHIELD...it's going to go down soon in D.C. It's probably better to leave that kind of shit to people who are used to lies and this whole world." I pursed my lips. "I've been meaning to ask you, do you want a therapist?" I blinked.
"Why?" He shrugged.
"You've been under a lot of pressure recently, and just to talk about past traumas."
"Have you seen a therapist for any of your PTSDs?" His face became grim. "I didn't read your mind, but even if we were in bad terms I know you more than as just Iron Man." He remained silent.
"You know, when you're like that you remind me of your mother but when she was annoying me."
"Mom was a psychologist after all."
"Don't remind me," he grumbled under his breath and I chuckled.
"When does the pizza arrive?"
New York City, April 2014
"And...got you!" Wade kicked me in the ribs, which made me fall on the back. I was so focused on his swords I forgot he also knew to fight without weapons. "I mean, you're better but...still need work." I groaned, knowing a bruise would be here later on. I accepted Wade's hand. "I'm flattered you didn't forget about me now you have all of these super people around you."
"You're hard to forget." He grinned smugly.
"Flattery will get you nowhere with me. Unless you're Vanessa."
"Right, your Christmas escort girlfriend?"
"Precisely. You'll love her I tell you."
"I mean, if she's tough enough for not wanting to smash your head in a window and follow your pop culture references then yes, I guess." He laughed.
"I know right!" I rolled my eyes and followed him back to his place.
I came back five months ago. Among the Avengers, I only talked to Tony and Doc. Thor was off somewhere, like Clint, and Natasha and Steve were busy in Washington.
I kept wondering where James had been taken though.
"I hope she's got clothes on because I'm hearing things that hint she's not."
"Well you'll stay outside for an hour with music in your ears," Wade replied and I slapped him on the shoulder. "Hey, people died for doing that."
"I'm too precious for you to kill me."
"Meh, I'd say I don't want troubles with your god father and his friends," he said, opening the door to his place. "Honey, I'm ho..." She turned her face toward us, a stunned expression on. "Vanessa?" She just pointed at the TV. Wade and I joined her and I gaped.
"It's live from Washington..." Vanessa mumbled. An helicarrier was falling in the river.
"Shit that's the Triskelion."
"Wait, where they took us in 2011?" I nodded at Wade. I picked up my phone when it vibrated in my pocket.
"Addi, D.C..."
"I know, it's on the news," I cut off Tony. "What the hell is going on?"
"If you think that's bad, go on the internet. Every SHIELD field is online." I widened my eyes. I was pretty sure the SHIELD didn't know about the underground fights or how Wade and I met and what we did to these assholes. If anything, if Fury noticed Wade it was because of his time in the Special Forces and not Jacksonville.
"Erase anything related to Wade." Vanessa and Wade looked at me. "I don't care about me, I'm screwed now I'm with you guys, but..."
"I'm already on it." I hung up. Wade turned me toward him, his hands on my shoulders.
"Addi, what's going on?"
"The SHIELD files are on the internet. Everything." He widened his eyes. "Tony's already deleting anything that may have your name in it or..."
"It's not me I'm worried about!" he reprimanded me harshly. I winced in pain when he clenched his hands harder on my shoulders. "You'll be branded as a terrorist!" I scratched my temple.
"I'm pretty sure the Avengers' name will protect me, and Tony's army of lawyers."
"The Avengers?" Vanessa repeated, dumbfounded. "And 'Tony' as in Tony Stark?" I nodded.
"I didn't mention Addison was his goddaughter?" Vanessa shot him a stern look, arms folded on her chest.
"You did not. You just said she was the reason you quit after Jacksonville."
"Well she is! And a few years later I helped her with something that got me in the SHIELD's files."
"Wade!"
"I told you I had a past!"
"I know but you never mentioned it was with something problematic like the SHIELD!"
"Don't worry babe, I can protect ourselves just fine if it's necessary!" I tried to flee but Wade grabbed my wrist without even turning around. "Where do you think you're going?"
"I just wanted to give you some privacy."
"Before I introduce the two of you properly? Not a chance. Addison, this is Vanessa. Vanessa, this is Addison." I nodded at her and she returned it.
"At first when I heard Wade talking to you on the phone I thought he was cheating on me but with that picture I realized it was more like a sibling relationship."
"Yeah...wait, picture?" She pointed at the fridge. I walked to it and cringed at the picture of a seventeen-year-old me with Wade. "I looked depressed."
"You were." I glared weakly at my old friend.
"The less people know we know each other, the better it will be for you." I looked at the text Doc sent me. "I have to go."
"Go save the world Addidi!" I gave him the finger while I walked away. "That's not very heroic! If anything, it's anti-heroic!"
Bruce was pacing furiously when I got back at the Tower. Pepper was in front of her laptop, her eyes on the screen but her phone against her ear.
"It's a mess!" Doc almost yelled to me as I stopped him from pacing. "Everything is on the internet. Everything! How...what..."
"Doc, I need you to calm down. We've got a Pepper Potts on our side for public image and a Tony Stark to...take down embarrassing stuff."
"The internet!" he repeated angrily, his neck turning green. I took a deep breath.
I saw the Hulk a few times during training, especially because Banner wanted to know what was going on in his head. Well, the big guy was a kid throwing tantrum.
"I know." I released him. "It's going to get real bad before it gets better. For all of us." I pursed my lips, uncertainty on my face.
"Addison, go to D.C," Tony said from behind me. He seemed tired of this already. "I swear, I'm sure they didn't have another choice but if they had called us maybe they would have had one!"
"Why do I have to go?"
"For one, you're useless here." I rolled my eyes. "Second of all, the Winter Soldier was involved in the Washington fiasco and spoiler alert, it is Barnes. You're the one he's the less likely to attack."
"Yeah makes sense." I twirled my keys around my finger and left.
I couldn't help but worry during the entire way to Washington. Steve was most likely disturbed and worried as he had seen James, and James...he must be highly disturbed as well. Maybe Steve triggered his memory?
Now HYDRA was discovered, where was he?
I arrived in D.C in the late afternoon, having received the name of the hospital Steve was in. I parked my car and immediately entered the place. I tried to locate Steve and I did, but I also located someone else. I widened my eyes and leaned my back against the wall.
What was Sharon doing here?
"You look like you've seen a ghost," a female voice commented dryly. I looked on my right and was relieved to see Natasha. Her hair was straight now.
"I think curly hair looks better on you." She took a strand of straight hair and gave it a contemplative look. "And you look exhausted."
"Well, a lot has happened." I pursed my lips.
"I'm aware." There was a silence for a few seconds. "Wasn't there any other choice?"
"We had to take SHIELD down, it was too compromised." Her voice was blank, cold, but she was a spy, it would be an issue for her as well. "Did you notice someone you don't want to see?"
"Urgh, a relative."
"Agent 13, isn't it?" I raised a brow. "Sharon Carter?" I nodded weakly. "She was Steve's neighbor."
"Does he know who she is?"
"I don't think so," she replied with a slight smirk. "Bad blood?" I shrugged and pointed at me.
"Monster." There was a glint of understanding in her eyes.
"Follow me, I think Sam's with Steve anyway." I followed her.
"Sam?" She didn't reply. Natasha and I were quickly in front of a door and I could read Sharon's thoughts less and less, indicating she was leaving the place. Widow knocked on the door and opened it, letting me close it behind me. "Hey boys."
"Hey, who's the kid?"
"I'm almost twenty-four seriously..." I muttered under my breath for the black man. "Sam? My name is Addison Carter."
"It's you then." He stood up and shook my hand. "Sam Wilson." I raised a brow.
"Wilson?" He nodded. "Sorry, I just know a guy with the same last name." He smirked at me.
"Lucky you, you've just met the best one." I chuckled and set my eyes on Steve. He was staring at me with a faint, painful smile.
"You don't look too good Cap." A dry chuckled escaped him as I went next to his bed. "How do you feel?"
"Like I fell from a helicarrier after being beat up by my dead best friend," he croaked in a hoarse voice.
"And several internal bleeding," Sam added.
"Nothing that can't be fixed," Steve felt the need to add with a look for his new friend. "I thought you were learning to control your power with Stark and Banner?"
"I was until today when I saw a helicarrier crashing in a lake in Washington." Even if he was beat up, he looked sheepish. "Pepper was on the phone, probably handling public image and Tony was busy going through SHIELD's files on the internet too embarrassing for us so he can take them down. Doc was...freaking out."
"Understandable," Natasha said, leaning against the window. "The Hulk is not the...easiest to handle."
"You were with Bucky at the lake then?" I looked back at Steve. "Fury told us." I nodded gravely.
"If it was not for him, I wouldn't have let go. He jumped on me and was too heavy." I pursed my lips. "How did he look to you?"
"He didn't remember me at first." I looked down. James was lost as well when he was with me.
"It's also the reason I'm here." They shot me curious glances. I lifted a lock of wavy brow hair from my right ear, showing them I had device behind my ear and an earbud in the ear.
"Are you deaf?" Sam asked me. I smirked at him.
"Not at all, it helps me. Did Steve tell you what I can do?"
"Yeah, move things with your mind and read minds?" I nodded and tapped my nail against the device.
"Tony developed it so that I could use my telepathy like a radar. It helps me focus." I took a deep breath. "I've been with him for a few weeks and there's a chance he might remember me, I'll drive around town and see if I can get any lead. I heard there was a Captain America exhibition at the Smithsonian Museum, might go have a look as well." Steve groaned in annoyance. "Hey, I studied History in college, there's a reason for it. Get well soon guys, see ya." I left the room.
I drove around in any location he might have gone to for an hour, knowing I could reach a lot of minds thanks to Tony's device. I drove two blocks from the museum and I heard his voice.
My car was parked soon after and I entered the museum. I took a deep breath when I followed his thoughts, seeing the signs saying I was heading for the Captain America exhibition.
I spotted him right away, standing in front of his own information. I carefully got closer to him until I stopped next to him. I shot him a quick look and saw him gulping.
"It's been a while." He lowered his head. "Do you remember me?"
"Addison Carter," he whispered quietly. I pursed my lips and looked at his picture on the panel.
"It's a nice picture."
"I don't know who that man is." He looked up. "I don't know who I am." He was confused, conflicted...alone. HYDRA must have played with his memories to turn him into the perfect soldier and now…
"You don't have to know him now," I whispered and for the first time, he looked at me. "It's like meeting a stranger, it takes time to get to know them. It's just that the stranger is your past." He furrowed his brows.
"I shouldn't be alive, not looking like this in this era." I didn't really know what to say. I opted for taking his hand instead. He slapped my hand away.
"I just want to take you outside. It's better to talk. I'm alone, promise." I shot him an apologetic glance. "Sorry I couldn't do more in London." He seemed to be slightly surprise at that, just barely but it was there. He looked at my hand and grabbed it in his cold one.
I led him outside, in an alley near the parking lot. I let go of his hand and turned around to face him.
"What are your plans now?" He shrugged.
"I'm done killing people. I...I don't want to do that anymore." I smiled.
"Good to hear James." He inhaled sharply. "Do you prefer Bucky?"
"No, James is fine."
"James it is then." I stared at him for a few seconds, an idea growing in his head. "Do you...do you want to remember Bucky?" He nodded, hesitantly but he nodded. "I know someone who can help you, if you want to that is."
"Why would you help me?"
"I'm curious as to who ordered you to protect me. It's...I don't like it." His eyes widened slightly and he took a big step toward me. I instinctively stepped back, my back meeting the wall.
"I still have that," he whispered more to himself than to me. "It's not...it's not assassination, I can do that."
"If you keep me from seeing people I know I will smack you in the face," I warned him in an angry growl. He blinked sheepishly.
"I...I won't?" He looked toward the busy road. "I don't...have anything anymore, it's..."
"Something to keep you sane, away from only thinking about the past?" He nodded. I exhaled deeply. "I will take you to that person I know, who's not Steve or anyone he knows." He almost winced at the mention of Cap. "And then I will...see. Does it...does it seem fair?" He nodded slowly. "Good, then keep your hat and head low and let's go." I lowered the front of his cap and left for my car, James walking soundlessly behind me.
I knew I should tell Steve but somehow…
I'll figure it out later.
