Chapter 9: Trust

"You know we'd be going twice—no scratch that—ten times as fast if you'd only let me take you."

"I'm not a real fan of your fast flying speed,"

"You don't mean that."

Amy rolled her eyes and scoffed, "Please,"

After Sonic had explained to Amy that Cream was looking for her and at the moment were at Tails' house she had agreed that they'd go over there instantly, but when he had suggested that he carry her and he'd run to Tails, she had not wanted to. She wanted to take the streets back to her neighborhood in which Tails was supposedly living near. She had lied that she didn't want her quills shaping out of place with all the wind blowing in her face so that's why she didn't want to run it there. Her lies were blockings to her real reasoning's to why she wanted to walk. She wanted to see how she led to Tail s' house without coming across hers and Sonic finding out where she lived.

They were almost around Tails' house but they had taken a long time to get there. Sonic had gotten impatient and began constantly nagging about how fast they would have gotten there if he had taken them himself. Of course Amy ignored him all the way and carefully walked around the city hoping not to catch a glimpse of her own friends.

But now they were out of the city and therefore it was safe for the time being. Her neighborhood was quiet and peaceful and she was proud to hear so was Tails. He had good taste in his pride life.

"Make a left here," Sonic nonchalantly noted.

She turned and just as she did there stood a conspicuous orange house. An Orange house, she thought to herself of how many times she used to pass this house and never did she think Cream's boyfriend lived here. Her house was just one street away and she could barely see it in the corner. She suddenly felt nervous, but maybe it was because she was going to enter a new household of a new mobian she had recently met.

Sonic walked alongside a rocky path up to a white door. Without knocking Sonic entered the house opening the door and bursting inside yelling "Tails! I'm home!"
Amy blinked completely bewilder to his unabashed behavior to entering a house. She maintained her impassive nature and peek her head into the cool air inside. Sonic was deep inside talking to someone already. "Hello?" She called out.

"Bring Amy inside! How could you leave her out there?"

"She was right behind me,"

The voices sounded close and she backed away when Sonic came back from another room and smirked at her. "Come inside,"

Amy narrowed her eyes at him. "This isn't your house to be saying that. Such manners," Amy dissed at him. She came in and her eyes scrutinize the area. Tails' house was neat, painted white walls, drawers with fancy contemporary art work such as paintings, models of birds and lamps that coiled upward, Amy was surprisingly aware his house were full of inventions.

Sonic closed the door and turned to her one eyebrow raised. "True, but I live here."

Amy flinched and she turned to him feeling flushed, but more shocked. Sonic chuckled and nodded for her to enter the other room before him. Amy collected herself and walked before him entering the other room. "Still, no manners," She muttered.

In entering the living room Cream sat in a comfortable couch with Tails sitting by her. When she saw Amy come in she got up and without processing it Amy was suddenly being hugged by her small rabbit friend. She blinked confused for a moment but then allowed herself to smile and hug her back she eyes closed.

"Amy!" Cream squealed.

Amy then pulled apart to take a look at her friend, sympathetically her eyes furrowed. She was ready to apologize, ready for what she had to be sorry for, but Cream beat her to it. "I'm sorry about yesterday," She blurted out.

Amy blinked suddenly feeling speechless. It would have been a lie if she'd said it wasn't awkward that Cream had said that, but it wasn't their fault that they had to ignore each other yesterday, but because of Sally, it was something they've had to do for some time now and both of them weren't use to it. Her conversation with Sonic still lingered around in her brain, even though she didn't want it too, it reminded her of where she stood in life.

"Once Tails and Cream began dating, Sally hated her. She's a traitor."

"And do you believe that?"

"…No,"

Amy smiled and shook her head. "It wasn't your fault! I…" She paused to make sure she knew what she was saying she changed her next sentence. "It won't happen again."

Sonic leaned against the wall observing them silently, his arms crossed and a serious look plastered all over his face. Tails noticed this rare look and got up from the couch pondering something on his own. Meanwhile Amy and Cream continued to talk, apologizing to one another about the flaws that occurred and the sad enough reason as to why they both felt bad for what had happen. Tails cleared his throat and got everyone's attention.

"Sorry to interrupt anything left to say, but Amy, care to join us for dinner tonight?" He asked.

The colors in Amy's face drain dramatically and became pallid through the intense feeling of being asked the question. "Dinner?"

Although, the thought of having dinner with Cream and her boyfriend seemed splendid, the fact that staying over at someone's house for so long and not going home to check on things scared her. What if Sonic wanted to take her home afterwards! Her house was nearby! What if some weirdo wanted to break into her house and what if they found out where she lived? Staying away from her house at night was a huge risk and she didn't want to bear with it.

"I couldn't really," Her voice was unstable and Sonic caught the jiff of it, his eyes lit up in amusement with a grin that glint. He pushed himself off the wall and sped behind Amy. His hands landed on both her shoulder. "Aw, but you'd be missing the fun. Tails' is a great cook by the way."

Amy narrowed her eyes at him. 'There he goes. He's doing it again' She pushed him away from her but he was still grinning. She tried getting passed him to leave out of the room, but Sonic blocked her way through.

"Sonic, it's okay. Maybe Amy's busy." Tails said, feeling embarrassed to have asked.

"Precisely !" Amy agreed, growling at Sonic who wouldn't let her pass.

Cream frowned.

"C'mon Amy, you won't regret eating his food, and besides, it'll give you more of a chance to talk to Cream, spend some time with her." He wheeled. Amy didn't say anything. She stopped from trying to get passed Sonic and stared at him. He was right. She turned to Cream and she saw her eyes spark with hope with her acknowledging it.

Sonic smirked feeling convinced that he had persuaded. He walked around Amy and shouted, "Ok Tails! Let's get cooking!" He walked into another room that led to the kitchen and Tails nervously smiled at her. "Are you sure? I don't want to be taking any time off your hands—"

"No, Sonic's right. I haven't had dinner and it'd be an honor to have some tonight with you and Cream….maybe even Sonic" She spoke quietly so Sonic wouldn't hear her, but as she continued her voice increased with confidence. "But I will say I won't stay long. I have work at eight so,"

Cream's smile widened and she jumped in place her hands clasping together. "OH goodie! You need to try Tails' beef steak and rice! He makes it with such flavor!" She squealed making Tails blush.

"You make some tasty food too Cream. Your deserts are divine." He said. Amy smiled a little and from behind a wall, in the kitchen, Sonic leaned against a wall, his arms crossed, his eyes closed and a small smirk creeping upon his lip.

.:XxX:.

The toilet was flushed, its swirling water creating a strong noise like a wind current roaring before a hurricane. Amy washed her hands in the sink that sparkled more than diamond themselves. She admitted she was impressed with Tails work around the house, but she was told his garage workshop was nothing in compare. He was inventor so being messy wasn't a surprised. The most talented people were always disorganized. She closed the faucet and opened the door. Turning off the lights of the restroom she let out a sighed.

"Whoa, Whatcha do in there? Poop your heart out?"

Revolted, she death glared Sonic who stood across from her in the hallway. He was so devious which annoyed the heck out of her. Amy shook her head and grumbled, "Leave me alone,"

"Amy relax. I was kidding," he said defensively, laughing.

"Ahuh, yea," She muttered and walked down the hall with Sonic right down her footsteps. "You know you caused me my time. I'm supposed to be getting ready for work tonight." She growled.

"But we'll eat soon and you'll have time to get to work. It's still early" He gaily said.

She said nothing when they reached the steps to head down stairs. Sonic didn't frown, he still had his smile but it wasn't all wide. "Amy,"
She stopped and turned around to Sonic. He walked next to her and smile. "Just be happy you still hold real friends," He said, winking and walking pass her and running down stairs.

"Real Friends," She repeated and followed him. She ran down the stairs and followed right behind his steps catching up to him. She caught up to him and her eyes searched his. He looked surprised that she had caught up with him. "What is that supposed to mean?"

Sonic took a good long stare before he broke off a laugh that left Amy puzzled and it was beginning to annoy her. She had no patience for this right now. From the corner Tails was coming in and saw the two hedgehogs. Upon seeing the two, he hid behind the wall and peeked his head a little to watch them. They were arguing but Sonic was smiling so maybe they were joking. Amy's face flushed as she as well looked confused. He didn't dare say a word to call out for both of them; instead he backed away slowly and left the two out in the living room.

"Speaking of friends, Amy, What do you plan to do with Sally? How can we convince her that she can trust as friends?" He asked, rubbing his chin.

Amy scoffed trying not to laugh, even if it was out of a deadpan. "This was your idea. I'm not planning anything!"

Sonic walked to the couch and sat on it, but quickly his feet lay sprawled across the couch leaving no space for her to sit. Amy didn't mind, she sat on the far end of a couch aside from where he was. She had respect and unlike Sonic sat comfortable on the couch without feeling too comfortable. She wasn't as bad as she looked.

"How about we act as friends and show her that if you're comfortable so can she." He explained a serious look. She couldn't help but think he looked like a little kid the way his head lifted up to face her, upside down. His eyes stared at her in an unusual way.

"If you're talking about School, I'm not so sure. She can…pull rumors." She hesitated to say at the end.

He stared her down and blinked before looking away from her and lowering his head back comfortably on the couch's cushion. Both his hands went behind his neck and he looked at the ceiling. "This planning stuff's harder than I thought." He mused, in a low tone.

Amy sighed and muttered, "Yea."

Silence.

But not entirely for she was still thinking and being head-busy she wasn't totally aware of the quiet in the room. He was right. I wasn't easy to convince Sally that Sonic's friends were good, but about Knuckles. He was dating Rouge and with Rouge having a bad history with Sally, how could she be convinced. She held a strong grudge against them and maybe if she were Sally and had gone through what she had, would be acting the same way too. She turned to Sonic and saw his eyes closed.

She tilted her head. He looked relaxed. Asleep…no he was thinking just as hard as she was. Still he was breathing lightly and she could hear his breathing through how tranquil it was. Maybe she should relax too, but her thoughts were struck closed. Her eyes narrowed down and she stood up her foot stomping and letting a fierce blow on the ground. Sonic flinched and nervously looked up at Amy. "Amy?" he stuttered.

"It frustrates me!" She growled.

Sonic kicked himself up on his feet and rose one of his eyebrows a smirk on the corner of his lip. "What does?"

"I don't know what to do!" She closed her eyes and tightened her face along with her fist. A first in Sonic's eyes. He chuckled and reached for her hands. He lifted them up and Amy's eyes widened. "You're thinking too hard. It'll come in time, but for now let's just take a break."

Amy blew out a shaky sigh, pulled her hands out from his and for the first time in a long time she allowed a small smile to appear before Sonic's eyes. She wasn't looking at him, but he was seeing it even if she never meant for it, it was progress. Sonic smiled and then his nose began sniffing out a scent. Amy backed away from him thinking he was crazy for a second but she smelled the scent. The smell of rice, fried rice and some kind of meat-like smell entered both their noses. Sonic exhaled gleefully and grinned. "I'd be guessing Tails and Cream are done cooking." He said.

"Whoa," Amy said, "It actually smells nice."
"You won't be saying that again once you've tried it." Sonic warned her with a grin and a wave of his finger. He began heading to the kitchen which was down a small passage way, but Amy's sudden call stopped him dead in track.

"Sonic, I—" She paused and wonder why she was calling him. She had nothing to say, or at least she didn't want to have nothing to say, but now that she's called him how would she tell him. "I-I…want to thank you."

Amused, he turned fully his eyes gleaming. Amy continued, "For what you've done so far. Even though I don't need your help, I just, I just want to let you know you're a good friend and I'm glad."

She stopped. It was too much for Sonic's ego. He was mischievously grinning at her, his eyes furrowed and his teeth shinning at her intimating her. He returned the gaze with a glower and she clenched her teeth. "Don't make me regret my words!"

"You know Ames, You're not cold blooded after all,"
"Cold whaa—"

He grabbed her arm and pulled her down the passage with her snarling something at him as they walked into the kitchen that night. Sonic was obnoxious in so many ways, but overall he knew how to sooth her soul. He knew what he was doing and she felt like she trusted him, but was this what trust felt for a guy? She didn't know. She liked it though. Hopefully, she knew what she was doing.
