A/N: Harry Potter is the work of J.K. Rowling. I own nothing, I simply just like to play with some of the beautiful characters she wrote.
A/N: This is one of my first fanfictions I'm ever posting. I've read many and I've wrote some, but I have never posted before.
Remus Lupin was stressed. There was no other word for it really. Last night had been Halloween and Hogwarts had held it's annual feast. Being around so many lively students and staff had somewhat lifted the deep feeling of loss that came with every anniversary of James and Lily's deaths. At least it had until Sirius Black had broken into the castle and slashed the Fat Lady's portrait after being denied entrance to the Gryffindor common room.Remus wasn't sure why he chose Halloween. Maybe it was symbolic or maybe it had just been chance. Either way it was lucky that everyone had been in the Great Hall, Harry especially.
To top it all off after he was finally back in his rooms for the night he received an owl from St. Mungos informing him that Ana had moved. She hadn't woken up yet but she was moving.
Remus wasn't quite sure what to think. Of course he wanted her to wake up but he had figured long ago that she wouldn't ever open her eyes again. Guilt settled in the bottom of his stomach as he thought about how long it had been since he had last went to see her.
If she ever woke up Remus decided he wouldn't tell her that it's been 12 years since he had graced her bedside. In all honestly it was just hard to see her that way, and everything had happened so quick and everyone that mattered to him was gone in less than a couple weeks. Remus just had to get away for a while. He had left and he'd worked some odd jobs to make ends meet but eventually he returned home. Even then he couldn't bear to go see Ana lying so still in a hospital bed. She had always been so full of life and vibrant that it seemed so unnatural for her to be so still and quiet.
After Remus came back to England he never went back to Potter Manor. It wasn't home without anyone else in it and the manor was filled with things that brought up memories he preferred to not think about. Ana had added him to the wards but it was just too painful. He had worked at multiple shops and bounced around jobs for years until Albus had contacted him. It was a year of steady pay, board, regular food, and on top of that he could get his Wolfsbane each month.
Of course he had been curious about Harry and Remus had met him far sooner than he thought he would after a run in with some Dementors on the Train. Harry was a wonderful blend of his parents. He saw James everytime Harry was practicing Quidditch or hanging around his friends. He saw Lily every time Harry would offer Neville encouraging words or the way he held his wand.
Now Remus had to focus on the most pressing matter of the morning. A matter that took precedence above Sirius Black's unauthorized entrance to the castle.
He had just woken up less than an hour ago to another St. Mungo owl pecking at his window. Remus could hardly believe the words that were written.
Ana had woken up. She was weak and would have a lengthy recovery after being in a hospital bed for so long, but she was awake and her mind was completely intact.
Another reason he felt so stressed at the moment was that someone had to inform Harry about his Aunt and Remus wasn't even sure how much the young man knew about her.
Remus began to get ready for the day and sighed. He would inform Harry, inform the other Professors and the Headmaster, then he would go to St. Mungos to see Ana.
He felt unbelievably nervous but more than anything he was excited. He had been alone for so long and he knew that Ana would never let him be by himself again, not when she could help it. More than that, Harry had been without his real family for so long and Remus was positive that she would never agree to him going back to Petunia's.
Remus had left his room and found Harry sitting at the Gryffindor table for breakfast as he entered the Great Hall. He had talked to Harry alone for the first time yesterday and had invited him to his office.
He had seen him wandering the halls while the other students were at Hogsmeade and Remus felt angry that his guardians wouldn't even sign a permission slip for him. He had invited Harry in and they had chatted for a bit until Snape had brought him his Wolfsbane.
Harry had seemed very concerned that he had drank a potion made by Severus Snape and it had amused Remus to know that Harry was worried about Snape poisoning him. He had said that some people thought that Snape would do anything for the Defense position and while Severus certainly wanted his position, Remus knew he wouldn't be killing him anytime soon to get it, no matter how much he might want to.
Remus was feeling pretty excited once he got over his nerves. He would get to be the one to break the news of Ana's waking to Harry and he knew that he'd be the best one to tell him about her. They were best friends and she was pack. Remus spotted Harry as he approached the Gryffindor table.
Remus cleared his throat, "Harry?"
Ron and Hermione looked up at him while Harry turned around, they each wore easy smiles and Harry spoke. "Hello Professor Lupin."
"Harry, I was wondering if I could have a word in private if you wouldn't mind?"
Remus ignored Ron and Hermione's questioning looks, Harry would tell them almost immediately he was sure, and he waited for Harry to answer.
Harry gulped down the rest of his pumpkin juice and stood. "Sure Professor."
Remus began to lead Harry to his office and Harry looked at him. "Are you going to warn me about Sirius Black trying to kill me too?"
Remus felt his insides freeze up for a moment at Sirius Black's name. He was sure that Harry wasn't aware of Sirius's relation to him yet and Remus wanted to keep it that way, there was enough on the boy's plate as it was and Ana could tell him if she chose to.
Remus shook his head. "No Harry, while It would do you good to be careful that's not why I asked to speak with you."
Harry looked very curious now as Remus opened the door to his office and gestured for Harry to take a seat.
Remus went to his desk and picked up an old Photo album he had pulled from the very bottom of his trunk this morning before fetching Harry.
"Has anyone ever told you about your Aunt? Your father's sister, not your mother's."
Harry frowned and shrugged slightly, "Hagrid gave me a photo album in my first year that had some pictures of my parents and a couple of her as well. Mrs. Weasley also showed me a couple photos she had but she never really talks about her. I think they might have been friends though."
Remus nodded and opened his photo album before handing it to Harry, all the pictures containing Sirius Black had already been removed many years ago.
"I was friends with both of your parents and your aunt as well. We were all very close in our school years and afterwards."
Harry looked up in surprise and then began to look through the pictures. "Aunt Ana and my Dad look a lot alike."
Remus nodded, "They would, they were twins. They were always very close. Ana had taken custody of you after your parents-"
Remus felt his throat constrict and cleared it,
"-passed. She only had you a week before Voldemort's remaining followers had captured her trying to find out what happened to him."
Harry sat up straighter, a dark look coming over his face. "So she's been in St. Mungos because of what they did to her?"
Remus nodded, "She's been in a coma for twelve years. Yesterday I received an owl that she had moved and then today the healers informed me that she had woken up."
Harry gaped and jumped from his chair, a huge smile lit up his face. "We have to go see her! I have to go see her! Is she ok? When can I meet her?"
Harry's mind was going a million miles a minutes trying to process what Professor Lupin had told him. He had known since his first year that he had another Aunt but he didn't think of her that often. Hagrid had told him that she had been in the hospital almost as long as he'd been alive and that they didn't think she'd ever wake up. No one had ever told him why she had been in there and he never asked. It was just another part of his family that he didn't get to ever know.
To him she was practically dead and his parents were definitely dead so he never entertained the idea that one day she would wake up and he'd have family other than his Aunt Petunia and Dudley.
His Aunt Ana knew his parents and she grew up with magic right next to his dad. He was only growing more and more excited as he thought about everything he could learn from her.
Remus finally interrupted his thoughts by placing his hand on Harry's shoulder.
"She is going to have a very hard recovery ahead of her. Her body hasn't been used in twelve years. As it stands, I do not think that you'll be permitted to leave the grounds right now, not with Black on the run."
Harry could feel his mood dropping. His Professor made sense but it seemed unfair that he had more family so close but so far. Family who wouldn't think that he was unnatural like Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon.
"Harry while you can't leave the castle, I would be happy to take her a letter. I'll be leaving later this afternoon so you best go write one, you can bring it to me in the Great Hall at lunch."
Harry beamed at his Professor and stood with his things. Remus stopped Harry by handing him a few photographs.
"These are from your parent's wedding. You can keep them if you want."
Harry grinned and he looked down. One had his aunt and dad with their arms slung around his mum. They looked pretty young and his mother had on a beautiful white dress and his dad wore tidy black dress robes. His Aunt had on a dark green dress and he smiled as the picture moved.
His dad and aunt each slung their arms around his mum and kissed her cheeks at the same time.
The next was was his Aunt Ana sneaking up on his dad and jumping on his back. His dad would jump in shock and then grin at his sister and the picture would replay.
The last one was just his Aunt Ana. She grinned at the camera and then twirled and then winked.
Harry felt such loss for a moment. He could've had a life with the type of happiness the pictures exuded. However as he stared at the woman in the picture with twinkling hazel eyes and hair as dark as his own he knew that he could have the next best thing to his parents.
An aunt who would tell him stories and show him pictures. An aunt who could tell him everything he had ever wondered about but couldn't get answers to.
Harry turned to leave, anxious to begin a letter and waved over his shoulder. "Thanks Professor! I'll see you at lunch."
Remus smiled as the boy left and then he conjured his patronus.
"Albus, I have some important news, get Minerva and Severus as well. I'll be to your office in a couple minutes."
Remus watched the wolf run off and sighed. He wondered how Harry would feel if he knew that the Professor he thought capable of poisoning him used to be best friends with his mother and his aunt.
He shook his head and decided no use lingering in things that no longer mattered. He knew that even if Severus hadn't fallen out with Lily and Ana in fifth year that he might still want to know that she was awake.
Remus reached the Headmaster's office. "Licorice wands."
The gargoyles moved aside and Remus ascended the stairs. He knocked and when Albus called for him to enter he went in.
Minerva was already seated with a cup of tea and Remus smiled as Albus gestured for him to sit.
"Remus, my boy, is everything alright?" Albus questioned with a kind tone.
Remus nodded, "Yes of course Albus, I just would like to wait for Severus to get here before I tell everyone why I asked then here."
Albus nodded and Minerva frowned. "This isn't about Sirius Black is it?"
Remus shook his head, unhappy that he had to think about the traitorous wizard so much the last couple days. Before Minerva could say anything else Severus stalked into the office.
"Is there a reason you have summoned me, Lupin? Finally going to admit you know how Black has made his way into Hogwarts undetected?"
Severus had his arms crossed and a scowl on his face and Remus nearly rolled his eyes at the short tempered wizard.
Remus set his cup of tea down and cleared his throat. "As you all know it has almost been twelve years that Ana Potter has been in St. Mungos."
Albus stared at Remus questioningly and Minerva immediately dabbed her eyes. Severus still was still standing and his face impassive as ever. Remus continued, "I received an owl last night that she had moved her arm, and then this morning they sent another informing me that she is awake and her mind is fully intact."
Minerva gasped and Albus raised his eyebrows. Severus looked shocked for a moment but quickly covered it when Remus looked his way.
"I thought you'd all like to know."
Albus nodded, "Thank you Remus, has Mr. Potter been informed?"
Remus nodded, "Yes, he wanted to visit but I told him to write a letter and I'd take it to her later. The healers said she has a lengthy recovery ahead. I'm supposed to go see her this afternoon."
Minerva smiled widely. "Oh this is lovely, I wasn't sure she would ever wake up after what she went through."
Remus nodded and Severus cleared his throat. "If St. Mungos needs anything brewed you may tell them that I have volunteered my assistance."
Remus felt his eyebrows jerk up in surprise and saw Minerva's face mirroring his own. Albus looked as though the potions master being kind was an everyday occurrence and smiled.
Severus eyed them all and nodded. "If that's all I'll be taking my leave now, I have things to do."
With that Severus had left the room in a swirl of black and Remus shook his head.
"That was very odd."
Albus smiled serenly and popped a lemon drop in his mouth. "If I think about it, I find that it isn't very odd at all."
Remus and Minerva finished their tea before taking their leave. Remus left for his office to get some papers graded before lunch. Time was crawling by at an annoyingly slow rate and Remus hoped that noon would hurry up. After twelve years he was finally going to see Ana and she would be awake. More than that he would be bringing a letter from Harry and he knew that while him being a teenager and not a baby might be quite a shock after missing so much time, she would be happy to hear from him even if she couldn't see him in person yet.
On the other side of the castle three young Gryffindor's sat in the common room as Harry told his two best friends everything that Professor Lupin had told him.
"Oh Harry, that's wonderful. What are you going to put in your letter?" Hermione questioned as she looked at the pictures Harry had brought back with him.
"Bloody hell, twelve years in a coma. What do you say?"
Hermione huffed at Ron and turned her attention back to Harry who had begun to stare at a piece of parchment as if the letter would write itself. It was a good question, how did you write a letter to someone who just spent 12 years in a coma.
"I'm just going to write whatever comes to mind. I mean the people there would've already told her how long she was out."
Harry dipped his quill and began to write his letter.
Twenty minutes later and Harry was grinning as Hermione neatly rolled his letter for him and tied it.
"I'm starving." Moaned Ron as they stood to leave.
Harry nodded as his stomach also grumbled. "Me too, I have to get this letter to Professor Lupin anyways."
So the three Gryffindor's left the tower and Harry could hardly wait for his Aunt to read his letter and write back. Hopefully she would be happy to talk to him. He had so much on his mind this year between Black, the Dementors, Trelawny's death prediction, and Quidditch that he hoped talking to her would help. Maybe she would even have some advice to give him.
Professor Lupin ran into them in front of the Great Hall and smiled. "I assume that's your letter there?"
Harry nodded and held it out for him to take and Professor Lupin neatly tucked it inside his coat . "I'll make sure she gets it." Harry gestured for Ron and Hermione to head in for lunch.
Before Lupin could walk into the Great Hall as well Harry cleared his throat "Professor?"
"Yes, Harry?"
"My aunt," he started hesitantly, "Do you think that she will be happy to hear from me?"
Professor Lupin gave Harry a smile and put his hand on his shoulder. "Harry, your Aunt is a great witch. She has always been one of the kindest people I ever met. When you were younger she doted on you and she loved you like no other. You may be older now but I've no doubt that she will love you just as much as she did then."
Harry nodded, "Thanks Professor."
Remus watched as Harry walked into the Great Hall and checked his watch. It was nearly time to go. His stomach was rolling in anticipation and Remus decided that food would wait as he could hardly even think about stomaching anything at the moment.
Remus walked with purpose to the Headmaster's office and stopped in front of the stone gargoyles.
"Licorice Wands"
He made his way up to the Headmaster's office and Albus smiled as he walked in.
"Remus my boy, I suppose you are going to St. Mungos now?"
Remus nodded. "Yes, Harry has written Ana a letter, I'm going to bring it to her. I'm sure she's pretty shocked at how long she was in the coma. She doesn't know about Alice and Frank or anything so I thought this might bring her some happiness despite everything else."
Albus steepled his fingers together and leaned forward. "You know I often find that most people are stronger and more resilient than they realize."
Remus nodded and stepped towards the Floo. "I'll be back before dinner."
Albus waved him off, "take as long as you need."
"St. Mungos."
When Remus emerged from the floor he was immediately assaulted with the sterile smell that came along with hospitals. He made his way to reception and the older witch gave him a tired smile.
"Hello. How can I help you?"
"Um, I'm here to see Ana Potter."
Her eyes widened slightly, "Oh yes, you'll want to go to the fourth floor, spell damage. She's in room 406."
Remus nodded, "Thank you."
He made his way to the fourth floor and purposely looked away from the Janus Thickey Ward that also resided on the fourth floor. Ana had been lucky, Frank and Alice had ended up suffering a fate far worse than a coma. Their minds were completely addled and unrepairable. Remus had visited once and Alice had handed him wrappers while Frank just looked around paying no mind to him
It had been hard to see them that way and he had went to see Ana right after and told her that he needed to get out of England. Of course she wouldn't know that but seeing his friends in the hospital, losing his other three, and being betrayed by someone he would've died for, he really just had to wrap his mind around that and Britain was not a place he could've done that. It held too many memories.
Remus soon found himself standing outside of room 406 and he nervously straightened his jacket and ran his hands through his hair.
"Ok Remus, you can do it." He felt better after his own pep talk and a snort sounded from inside the room.
"Remus, I can hear you out there."
Ana's voice floated through the door and Remus stood still for a second.
"Damn Animagus hearing," He huffed.
She sounded the same as he remembered except her voice was a bit scratchier than it used to be, but that was probably from not using it for so long.
Remus pushed the door open and sitting propped up in bed was Ana.
Her hair was still the familiar black that James had and Harry inherited only it was much longer than before. Her eyes were hazel were sparkling even if they carried dark rings underneath. Ana's lashes were long and her dark features caused her already pale skin to look ghostly. She looked a bit older but for the most part she was the Ana he remembered.
Ana raised her eyebrow. "Well Moony, you got old." She let out a loud laugh that was contagious and filled him with warmth, soon Remus began laughing too.
"Oh, Ana." Smiled Remus as he threw himself into her open arms. She still managed to smell like peaches though it was faint due to the hopsital's overwhelming scent. The wolf inside him howled at the smell of one of his pack.
Ana was awake and she seemed like herself. Remus felt tension he didn't even realize he was carrying lift as he continued to hug his oldest remaining friend. He finally wasn't alone anymore.
