I woke up abruptly, drenched in sweat and panting. I ran a hand on my face. It was...it was not a nightmare, but a memory. They were more and more vivid.
I stood up and splashed some water on my face, drinking some as well. When I went back in my room, I stopped next to Captain America's shield. Tony told me I could keep it for now and train with it if I wanted, that while Steve no longer had it it was still made of vibranium and could be useful.
I slipped a pair of yoga pants on and a sweater before taking the shield and go to the training room. It was the middle of the night, so I turned on the lights. The room was big already in broad daylight, but with the moon shining outside it made it seem even bigger, and me smaller.
I threw the shield a few time, catching it without using my telekinesis when it bounced on the walls. It didn't last long because I ended up staring at it once in my hands. My palms were red from catching it.
"Can't sleep anymore or didn't manage to sleep?" a voice asked behind me. I looked above my shoulder, nodding to acknowledge Tony.
"First option." I heard him walking to me.
"You decided to play Frisbee?" I smirked faintly.
"Just...I shouldn't have it." He frowned.
"Rogers trained you with it." I pursed my lips.
"Yeah, because I had the bad habit of stealing it from him. However, the legacy is too heavy. It represents the fight against oppression and hatred and unfairness, it's a symbol of freedom...it's quite ironic how it seems to just trap the one holding it."
"You remembered something," he guessed with a stern look.
"I remembered why I decided to leave on my own," I confirmed.
"That's something I've been curious about for months," he said, stepping forward. "Do you mind…"
"I'm sorry," I whispered, staring at the shield. "I didn't know...I didn't know the Winter Soldier killed your parents." He froze. "And I'm sorry for...for Siberia." He clenched his jaw.
"Well, it's not as if you were…"
"I fought you Tony," I interrupted him sharply. "I...I'm sorry for leaving. Again." There was a moment of silence. He pursed his lips, his hands in his pockets.
"You're back now," he finally said. "Even if you leave, you always find your way back." I chuckled faintly. "There's more, isn't there?"
"I didn't know Steve knew about your parents...or mine. It was Barnes...he told me Rogers knew when he told me about Siberia and why he left, because he killed…"
"He killed Vicky and David?" I nodded painfully. "I...I really shouldn't be surprised."
"I wasn't," I whispered. "When he told me...I already knew. However, it was Steve hiding…"
"The betrayal you felt, like your friendship was just convenient," he finished for me. "I know the feeling."
"How did you get back?"
"His Highness T'Challa gave me a ride. Apparently he followed me and saw the whole...thing. Kept Zemo from shooting himself too."
"Was I...a Captain America fan as a kid?"
"Pretty much yeah. You grew up hearing your grandmother talking about him and stories of the war and his heroism." I didn't miss the bitterness at the last word. "You once told me that he was a symbol of acceptance." I pursed my lips.
My guts kept twisting thinking about Rogers.
"I can't use that. I don't...I don't think anyone should, could, right now."
"Then we put it back in the closet and forget about it or what it represents." I smiled at him, although it was faint. "I know, easier said than done. Come on, I'll make you a midnight snack."
"You? Pepper is the one to do that usually." I followed him, Tony draping an arm over my shoulders.
"I can make pancakes you know!"
"Sure…"
I made the pancakes. He pulled the toppings out of the cupboards and fridge.
The shield went in a storage room, a black cloth over it.
"I'd...I'd like to look through Dav...Dad's files, tomorrow." He raised a brow, the fork in his mouth. He swallowed his mouthful of pancake. "I think I took enough time off. Sure, I'm...I haven't entirely recovered, I don't remember everything, but I know he discovered something and it interested Sinister. And HYDRA, enough for them to kill him and Vic...Mom. I want to know why."
"Alright," he accepted. "I have all the files related to the PEGASUS project stored somewhere and I know where you stored what you got from Ivanov. You never told me but really, it was pretty obvious." I blushed, embarrassed. "I went to your house in London and got a few things, so you have a lot of fun times ahead of you."

"You're a real savior," I told Pietro, almost tearing up. He classified the files with his speed. He shot me a cocky grin.
He was always there. Pietro had been a constant emotional support ever since I woke up. For someone who was annoyed with having to slow down for people, he had no problem doing it for me. He was quick to take me away from the swimming area when I started to hyperventilate in front of the pool.
I couldn't stand water anymore. I couldn't take bath or see a tub full of water. Anything that could contain water, enough to at least put someone's head in it was a no no.
I remembered being put into icy water to see if my powers would protect me.
Knowing Pietro was actually older than me also...seemed to make a difference.
"Why are you helping me this much?" He blinked, his grin falling.
"Because we're friends?" he replied as if it was obvious, his accent emphasizing that.
"That's all?" He pursed his lips.
"You saved my life in Sokovia. When...when Wanda and I arrived here, you weren't always there but helping that guy but…" He almost spat the word 'guy'. "But you came when we needed or just hang out. You helped us with our powers and was...patient when we'd fail or be frustrated. It...it was nice to feel almost understood by someone for once." I smiled softly at him and his cheeks turned a little red. "It's my way to give back."
We were sitting next to each other on the floor in my room. I leaned to him and kissed him on the cheek. He froze and stared at me with wide eyes.
"Thank you." His face exploded in colors and he jumped to his feet, stuttering something about needing to leave.
I watched him leave, running in the wall on the way, in amusement.
I went through everything in the span of two days. I knew what Project PEGASUS was about. I knew that my father was working on something related to 'where everything started for us' and that it was apparently not the only one. The project...it harnessed the power of the Tesseract. It was the reference regarding 'where it all started for us'. Red Skull found it, then used it and Rogers was created, then SHIELD.
Inside the Tesseract...was...was something. It was related to what gave the twins their powers, what made mine evolved.
There was something on Earth like that then. Something that was there in the nineties, meaning it was not one we encountered before. There were lots of references to Sherlock Holmes too for some reasons. Not that I didn't feel like him right now, trying to figure out what it was my father found...there seemed to be something weird regarding the Project. Dad was sure it could change people.
Sherlock Holmes though? What was up with him? He was British. Fictional. Had Watson. Baker Street. Detective. London.
I moved a paper closer to my face. There were numbers after 'not the only one'. Sherlock Holmes had no business in there, maybe it was Dad's way to...tell a location? It was very far fetched but I was desperate. If it was a location then maybe the address…
After a quick Google search, I wrote down '221B Baker Street' on a blank piece of paper. The numbers were 1541 011600 000000. I added them to the address I had, internet gave me nothing. I tried to subtract them. It gave me '177A Bleer Street'. I searched for it on the internet. Nothing.
However, it wanted to correct me with 'Bleecker' instead of 'Bleer'. The map sent me to a place in Greenwich village, here, in NYC.
Well, I guess I had a place to visit.
Two days later, as Peter was leaving the Compound, I volunteered to drive him back instead of Happy. Happy gave me a weird look but shrugged it off, happy to dodge the chore.
"You know, I'm sad I haven't met Doctor Banner but Doctor McCoy knows so much stuff too!"
"He did graduated from Harvard at fifteen you know." Peter gaped at me. "I'm taking you didn't know?"
"I didn't!" Yeah, Hank designed a lot of things for the X-Men.
"You would have loved having him as a teacher. I had him in sciences and math when I was younger."
"Do you remember it?"
"I remember wanting to bang my head against the table." He laughed at that. "Hey, I'm not a science nerd like you or your friend Ned, okay. I'm a History person."
"Ironic, considering you don't remember everything." I stopped harshly at a stop sign. Peter's head almost hit the windshield.
"Oh I'm sorry, did you say something?" I asked him innocently. He glared at me but it looked like a puppy instead of a barking dog. "That's what I thought. I had Logan in History anyway. It...it was interesting."
"Logan as in Wolverine? The one who comes at the Compound once a month or less to beat you and Pietro up before leaving again?"
"Himself." He nodded and pursed his lips as the car moved. "Something else Peter?"
"Do...would you mind helping me with...with some homework?" I raised a brow. "History has been tough recently. Too much dates."
"It's kind of the point. Yeah, sure, why not? Too bad your classes aren't about Star Wars or you would know the whole history."
"Yeah, it would be great if we had a class like that."
"Pop culture class?"
"It sounds way better than some of the classes I have."
"What do you learn exactly?"
"Huh...American History mainly." I grimaced. "Wait, aren't you a History Graduate?"
"I am, with a specialization in European mythology and European History."
"So you're useless." I shot him a glare.
"It doesn't mean I don't know about American History you little shit." He grinned. "Teenagers…"
"Mister Stark says the same."
"It makes me wonder if he complained about me before too…" I left Peter in front of his place, telling him to text me when he was free.
I drove to Greenwich Village. I parked my car and used my phone as a GPS. Soon I stopped in front of a building. I looked at it and knocked on the door.
To my utter surprise, I knocked only once. The second knock never made it to the door because I was already inside. I looked behind me and touched the door. Solid.
"Addison Carter." I looked toward the stairs and stared, unfazed, by the man floating toward me.
"It's a flashy entrance." He landed and tilted his head on the side to agree.
"Doctor Stephen Strange, I am the Sorcerer Supreme and the Master of the New York Sanctum."
"Sorcerer?" He nodded. "Okay."
"You don't seem surprised." I shrugged.
"Look, my brain got electrocuted who knows how many time and I don't remember my whole life, but I'm sure as hell that when I went to the UK, I saw Merlyn and Roma turning Brian into Captain Britain and he explained to me the whole...Otherworld and Multiverse so really, you being a sorcerer is not that shocking. Not much is anymore." He furrowed his brows.
"Merlyn?" I nodded. "Wong!" An Asian man walked in the room, a cup of tea in his hands.
"What do you want?" He shot me a quick look and frowned.
"Is Merlyn real?"
"Oh yes, he was Sorcerer Supreme for a time, before the Ancient One. He resides in Otherworld and watches over the Multiverse."
"How come I wasn't aware of this?"
"You've been here for two months Stephen, you can't know everything already." Strange rolled his eyes and glared at me when I snickered.
"It will make explaining easier." We changed room and I fell in a chair, Strange in front of me. "So, your powers are potentially lethal."
"You mean the dimensional aspect of things?" He nodded. "Merlyn, he said that my powers were slowly getting in sync with the fabric of reality and someone else said I could tear said fabric apart."
"It would be very inconvenient, don't you agree?" I nodded. "Good, then I'll seal them."
"What? No!" I jumped on my feet. "I'm not here for that anyway!" He frowned.
"How did you find this place?"
"My dad!"
"I believed Doctor Carter dead."
"He is, but...he left all of his files, and he discovered something that made him a target and...and he said there was something, an energy source, here." Strange's frown deepened. "The same kind of...look, just tell me if there's an Infinity Stone here!"
"What is an Infinity Stone?"
"Seriously? Aren't you the Sorcerer Supreme!?"
"I've been here for two months," he defended himself.
He called his friend, Wong.
"The Ancient One met David Carter," he told us. "In the nineties. He was worried about something he discovered and it led him here. She was expecting him and…" He raised a finger and left the room. I exchanged a look with Strange.
"Don't you have a book with basic knowledge that comes with the job?" I asked him.
"It's called a Wong," he replied.
He came back with an old TV and a VHS with a VCR.
"Vintage," I commented idly. Wong put the tape in the VCR.
There was nothing for a few seconds and then, a man with dark, short brown hair appeared. His brown eyes were tired and a stubble was on his cheeks.
"Is it recording? Ah, yes." I felt tears coming up in my eyes. That...it was my father. "Addison, I'm filming this video for you. The Ancient One assured me that her successor would give this tape to you one day. If you see this...well, I knew from her tone that it meant I wouldn't be here. I can't say I'm surprised. Recently, I've realized that some of things SHIELD asked me to do regarding the Tesseract sounded wrong. I know Mum wouldn't do this." He smiled bitterly. "I don't know who it is, but someone infiltrated SHIELD. I'm not giving my research to anyone. Not after learning so much in Darkmoor, not after finding out there was another energy source on Earth like the Tesseract. The Ancient One explained it to me. In the Tesseract is the Space Stone, one of the six Infinity Stones. She is the guardian of the Time Stone." Strange looked down at the eye pendant around his neck. "Recently, something happened that pushed me to pull the plug on those research. I know that...I know that they're not happy and that they will make you pay. Your mother told me they would probably kill us and get my research. Even if it happens...no, when it happens, always remember Addison that you're your mother's and I's pride and joy. The Ancient One told me you would get seriously involved with the Infinity Stones and superhero things and I can't help but worry because I don't want you to run around playing Captain America, even if...apparently he's fine in your time? I'm also struggling to picture Tony as a hero but...I hope that you stick together in the future. I chose him as your godfather because I was sure he would come through one day. Uncle Howard wasn't so sure but...I trust him. He's like an annoying kid brother who's too smart for his own good."
I wiped the tear that fell.
"Recently, Fury knocked on my door when I was in the US. He was with someone called Carol Danvers.Long story short, she was hit by a wave of energy from the Space Stone and developed powers. You should see her, she's terrifyingly strong. She left Fury a pager in case of emergency, and emergency only. If I am telling you this it is because the Ancient One used the Time Stone to see the future. Currently, there are the Time and Space Stones on Earth. In your time, the Reality Stone and Mind Stone both have been on Earth. I don't think it is a coincidence. Something is in the making Addie, something big, and the Stones are too powerful to all be involved or hold by one individual. I am making this video to help you with whatever is going to happen. Get Fury, take his pager and contact Carol, Captain Marvel, when you can. Get ready." He pursed his lips, resigned eyes staring straight to the camera. "I love you Addison, I'm sorry I couldn't see the woman you have become. Your mother and I will always look after you and be with you." He took a deep breath. "Okay, that's all I had to say. Carter out." He turned off the camera.
There was a long silence. I looked at Wong, then Strange.
"Does any of you know more about the Stones?" I asked them in a hollow voice.
"Yes." Wong made a few hands moves, orange sparks flying from his hands. "At the dawn of the universe, there was nothing. And then boom!" An illusion of space appeared. Out of orange sparks came six stones.
Blue, green, yellow, orange, purple.
My finger grazed the red one.
"The Big Bang sent six elemental crystals flying across the virgin universe. Each Infinity Stone controls an aspect of existence. Space. Time. Reality. Power. Soul. Mind." As he listed them, they'd appear bigger for a second. Strange opened his necklace, a green light coming from it.
"If my father was right, if someone is looking for the stones and has the skills to harness their powers then…" I pursed my lips. "What are your field of operation again?"
"Mystical threats against Earth. The Avengers deal with the physical ones," Wong explained.
"And...would this scenario means you'd help us? I mean, you have a stone so if someone is looking for them you'd be targeted," I said casually, looking over at Strange.
"We have the duty to protect the Time Stone," the doctor replied. Well, good enough. I gestured at the necklace.
"My father said the Ancient One told him things about the future, it's the Time Stone, could you browse through our possible futures?"
"I already decided to do that," he told me, almost in a condescending tone. "If we have to assemble the Avengers, we need to do it early." I wrinkled my nose in disdain and refrained myself from commenting.
He was right.
He sat down on the floor, legs crossed and green circles appeared around his wrists. The Time Stone was shining.
I stepped closer to Wong and Strange's head started to move around very fast.
"Is that normal?"
"So far, yes," Wong told me, arms crossed and staring at his friend. "Let's wait."
We waited for a few minutes. It was...awkward to see Doctor Strange doing this. Thinking about it, I knew the guy. Well, I heard of him. He was a renowned surgeon who had a terrible car crash last year and couldn't operate anymore.
He stopped and opened his eyes wide, falling on the floor as he was floating above it.
"Is everything alright Stephen?" Wong asked him, helping him up. Strange took a deep breath, shooting me a weird look.
"Define alright Wong." Strange rubbed his forehead. "We have problems. Big problems ahead of us. Your father had a good intuition." I paled. I would have rather had him be wrong.
"When?" I asked him.
"A little bit more than a year. There's...a titan named Thanos. He's after the stones, has been for years."
"New York," I whispered. Strange nodded. "How many outcomes have you seen?"
"A lot, millions. The closer we'll get to the climax of this thing, the less there will be but for now...I stopped counting after twenty millions." There was something strange in his eyes as he looked at me.
"Do we win against this Thanos?"
"Yes. The safest...one is…" I furrowed my brows. "There is one where we lose, five years go by and the Avengers go back in time to correct their defeat. However, Black Widow and Iron Man both die. Captain America...as well in a sense." I gulped, absorbing the information.
"There must be...a way to fix that. Where do I fit in this?"
"You die before the big fight." I blinked.
"Wh...what?"
"You die," he repeated. "Thanos stabs you in the heart before he has all of the stones."
"...oh."
I...died?
"Isn't there other options where we don't die?"
"There are, but they are less certain. However, we can prepare now. I'd advise you to find this Carol Danvers."
"The more the merrier. You guys don't happen to...be able to get me to Fury, no?"
"We could," Wong said, "with something connected to him." I sighed.
"Well, it's gonna be hard to get that pager now."
"Don't use it right away." I frowned at Strange. "Doctor Carter said it was for emergencies. Wait for one."
"I'm guessing I'll be in the middle of one?" He nodded.
"You'll know." I took a deep breath and nodded.
"Tony and Natasha will not die then, right?"
"If everything goes well, there won't be too many defeat on our side," he assured me. I nodded nervously, fiddling my thumbs.
"Good good good…" I mumbled under my breath. "You won't seal my powers then?"
"No." Thank God. "However, if you lose control like it happened a few months ago, you'd cause damage hard to repair. You need to control them. You already opened a portal to the Mirror Dimension."
"The what?"
"It is a dimension we, Masters of the Mystic Arts, can enter," Wong explained. "However, we use magic to enter it. It is parallel to this dimension. We use it to practice our magic and fight foes without being seen."
"That's what happened then, my dark matter just vanished and then touched him," I muttered, holding my chin between two fingers. "I wouldn't say 'no' to being able to control my powers. I never thought it'd be thanks to sorcerers though."
"Dark Matter Manipulation has many aspects," Wong told me. "One important one observed in London in 2013 is breaking down the barrier between dimensions. The Reality Stone is linked to her replicas in other realities in the Multiverse, it's only natural that someone who was touched by a wave of her energy would be connected to other realities and dimensions." It made sense up to this point. "Not many know the true potential of the Reality Stone or how to use it. Another way to use Dark Matter is through magic."
"Magic? There is a Dark Matter Magic? It's different from yours?"
"We use Eldritch Magic," Strange said. "Magic is the ability to control and manipulate any form of energy to manipulate aspects of the Multiverse. As you can guess, you having powers linked to the Multiverse and dimensions is dangerous to us. There are evils that are better left in their own dimensions."
"And you can't have me running around potentially letting them go on a rampage because I get angry, I get that," I finished for him. "Couldn't you have said that earlier?" Strange rolled his eyes.
"Back to your own powers, you've been using Dark Matters for a few years now. Essentially, for you, Dark Matter Magic would be using the energy within the Dark Matter instead of Dark Matter itself. It would...stabilize your powers."
"I could put a lock on it for instance to avoid going overboard?" Strange nodded. "I'm guessing me controlling my powers could be what will save my life?" He nodded, but it seemed stiff. "Wait, does it mean I have an apprenticeship?"
"I...guess…"
"So Wong will train me?" Wong raised a brow and Strange looked offended.
"I'm sorry, what? I'm the Sorcerer Supreme."
"For two months," I reminded him. He reminded me of Tony, not just because of the facial hair. Wong smirked.
"Still, I am the Sorcerer Supreme." I shrugged. "And you're a potential threat, so I'll take care of teaching you."
I left with the phone number of the Sorcerer Supreme in my phone and a VHS.
What a day.
Thank you all for reading! Don't hesitate to leave a review!
Bye!
