My shield of energy stopped the psionic energy sent my way. To stop her attack, I needed to rely of magic.
"I can't get inside your head," she noted.
"You're not the first psionic person I fight, I know a few tricks." I looked at Loki. "I've got this." He raised a brow and shot her a look.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes. I'd rather not have her manipulate you against me though." He took a deep breath.
"If you die Thor will make me pay, so don't." He left us. Supergiant tried to get to him but I made a whip with magic and got her wrist.
Physical attacks had no effects, so energy-based attacks were the way to go. Stephen trained me, and Wong to an extent, so…
"Here's the thing. If you're intangible...then you can't really attack."
"I have other ways to kill my enemies," she replied.
She ran at me. I tried to stop her with magic but she dodged expertly.
"Great minds make great meals you know." I kept trying to put distance between us, but she was actively trying to do the opposite. "And I can feel a powerful mental shield in you, I will devour it gladly."
"The thing is, my mind has been altered quite a lot so it might taste stale!" I rolled on the side, jumped on my feet and stepped back, only to meet a wall.
"Let's see about that," she whispered in my ear.
A cold hand was put on my forehead and I fell on my knees, my energy being drained. I opened my mouth in a silent scream but she removed her hand quickly.
"You...you have a stone...I must tell…" I glared at her and in the blink of an eye, thin air was suddenly shaped like mirrors and went through us. "What did you do!?"
I got up, a hand on my head.
"I sent us to another dimension." The Mirror Dimension...it was worth a try. As long as I controlled it.
She ran away and I ran after her. We saw an Asgardian and she tried to get him, only to go through him. She blinked in shock.
"Don't bother, you won't interact with anyone except me as long as we're in the Mirror Dimension, and I'm your only way out."
"I'm going to force you to release me then." I smirked.
"I'd like to see that." I moved my hand, Dark Matter energy following. The floor beneath her feet followed my hand. "I control everything in here."
"The stone…"
"Unfortunately for you, I could do that before I got the Reality Stone." She roared and tried to come at me, but the floor split in half in front of her feet.
I moved the walls in order to be above her and fell behind her. I grabbed her arm and kicked her behind her knee, making her fall on it with a groan.
"Not as intangible anymore, are you?" The floor spun so that she face me and I punched her in the face, making her bleed. "So you can bleed!" I raised my hand, the floor tying itself around her wrist, midsection, neck and legs.
"You can't control it. Only Thanos can!" she gritted through her teeth.
"Who knows." I clenched my fist, snapping her neck.
I got myself and her body out of the Mirror Dimension and leaned against the wall, a hand on my head. She...devoured my mind or something? I felt tired and my head was pounding and heavy. I took a deep breath and used the Crytorryk Spell of Invisibility from the book. I was weakened, the element of surprise was my main weapon now.
I took a deep breath, slightly dizzy but went to Thor. The ship would shake each time the other ship would fire at us with energy blasts.
As I was about the reach the main room, the one Thor was crowned King of Asgard in, I couldn't help but shiver at the stench of blood and death in the air.
People were...dead on the ground. I noticed Hulk, hiding in the shadows, ready to attack. I gulped at Thor screaming in pain because of the Power Stone.
I gulped when I finally saw what that Thanos looked like. Even without the stone...he was powerful, I just knew it. The Reality Stone...it was pulsing beneath the magic layers covering its presence. It was being drawn to the gauntlet, no doubt about it, but it was still firmly attached to me.
"ALRIGHT STOP!" Loki yelled. Thanos stopped the Power Stone, Thor panting heavily.
"We don't have the Tesseract," Thor said weakly. "It was destroyed on Asgard." Loki proved him wrong by conjuring it.
The brief moment I wasn't looking…
However, it meant he was there for the Space Stone and not the Reality one.
"You really are the worst brother."
"I assure you brother," Loki said, stepping slowly toward Thor and Thanos, "the sun will shine on us again."
Thanos chuckled.
"Your optimism is misplaced, Asgardian."
"Well for one thing, I'm not Asgardian. And for another, we have a Hulk." Hulk launched himself as Thanos and Loki went to Thor, dropping the Tesseract on the floor.
I watched Hulk smash Thanos, and then Thanos smashed him until he lost consciousness. Thor attacked him, only to be thrown away and immobilized by the alien who used telekinesis.
Heimdall shot a look at where I was. He saw everything, and from the look in his eyes, he knew he would die here. I gulped and nodded to myself as he started saying an incantation. Loki was on the side but I went behind him as the light of the Bifrost appeared around Hulk.
Loki knew Thanos, how he worked. He'd be needed. Thor told me he'd protect me and I couldn't leave him to die here without trying anything. If Thanos were to kill me without knowing the Reality Stone was actually in me...he wouldn't be able to finish his plan.
"Wh…" Loki started as I used telekinesis to push him in the Bifrost with Hulk. They all looked at where I was.
"Reveal yourself," Thanos ordered firmly. I pursed my lips, took a deep breath and revealed myself. Thor tried to say something but it was muffled by the metal in front of his mouth. "Where is Supergiant?"
"Laying on the floor with a broken neck." His minions growled at me.
"I see. Sacrifices...are necessary." He clenched his fist and I was sent against the wall by a wave of purple energy.
I would have had broken bones if it was not for my adaptability. That being said, I was stunned and blood was dripping from my forehead. It had hit the floor quite violently when I fell.
I was powerless when Thanos stabbed Heimdall, of when his minion gave him the Tesseract and the Space Stone joined the Power Stone.
"There are two more stones on Earth," Thanos told his minions. "Find them my children, and bring them to me on Titan."
"Father, we will not fail you." I got up with a groan, interrupting them.
"We shall erase this insect fir…" Dark matter wrapped itself around their legs, sticking them in the floor as I got up.
"It doesn't feel good at all to be thrown like a rag doll." Thanos looked at his minions, then me.
"Terrans will remain terrans, no matter what."
"Yeah well, I dare you to face a terran who sends his consciousness into clones of himself and heals from any wound and we'll see after." He slightly tilted his head on the side. He shot Thor a look.
"Fine, I will grant you some entertainment before I kill you."
"What an honor." He used the Space Stone to punch me from where he was standing. I looked at the portal, his fist stopped in dark matter.
It was vibranium.
It was distorted by one punch. The portal though...it was way too familiar. Thanos retreated his fist and I ran at him. I dodged his punch by sliding between his legs, a rope of dark matter in each of my hands and around his ankles. I used telekinesis to slide further and he fell.
There was a deafening silence. I was barely back on my feet that I was making shield of dark matter to stop his fists. He was faster than me though so I was punched in the face. My nose broke.
I conjured my knife and tried to stab him, paralyzing him with dark matter. Unfortunately, he clenched his fist, destroying the matter with the Power Stone and stopping my hand with the Space Stone.
Damn, it sucked to have telekinesis used against you. I was forcing as much as I could, but I just couldn't move.
"Potential," Thanos said, taking the knife from my hand. He inspected it. "I like the look in your eyes, but I know you will stand your ground." I clenched my jaw. "If I ever see Stark, I'll be sure to tell him you died fighting a lost fight." I blinked and blood spurted from my mouth, tainting his armor. I looked down.
The knife, the one I had for years, that Barnes gave me...it was deep in my chest. I coughed and looked up at Thanos, who removed it. I stepped back and fell on my knees. Then I fell forward, Thor's scream muffled by the metal. My eyes met his.
Barnes broke my heart, didn't he?
How ironic was it the knife he gave me stabbed me in the heart?
Thanos and his minions left after Thanos sent a blast of energy from the Power Stone. Thor ran at me and lifted me.
"Hey, it's going to be fine, okay?" He was shaking.
"Th...thanks...for trying…"
"I'll succeed, you'll see!" He was trying to persuade himself as I felt cold and I was blacking out.
Sorry Strange, it seemed that ultimately, Thanos still killed me before I even reached Earth.
May 30th, New York Sanctum
"It's today," Wong told Strange, who was looking at the sky through the window.
"Yes. It shouldn't be long now."
"And Carter?"
"By now...I think she must have encountered Thanos and died." Wong gulped. "Now it's up to her." Strange narrowed his eyes at the beaming light coming their way. "They're coming."
Wong and him stepped away from the stairs when the Bifrost hit it. They waited for the light to disappear before going to the hole. The Hulk was turning back into Bruce Banner while Loki was on top of him, eyes wide opened in shock.
"Right on time," Strange told them.
"You…"
"Wong, get Doctor Banner some clothes. Loki, we have much to talk about before we get Tony Stark."
"Of course, him," the Asgardian prince muttered, climbing out of the hole.
To Strange's surprise, he stretched out his hand for Banner to take, which he did.
"I don't know what you told this poor girl, but she's very dead, much like my brother now I'm sure." Strange pursed his lips.
"She's the one who found me, not the other way around. We knew Thanos was coming today though." Loki's face turned serious and doubtful.
"How?"
"I'm sure I'll explain later. For now, we need to get Iron Man and I need to contact someone."
Loki was left alone. He sat down on the stairs and ran his hands on his face.
Thor was...dead. Heimdall as well, Thanos wouldn't forgive him for sending him and Banner away. Addison was dead as well, even if she had survived Thanos, the Mad Titan wouldn't have left the Statesman standing and no human could survive in space.
He was not entirely sure how long an Asgardian could survive in space. Now he was back in the very city he had tried to take over years ago, about to meet the group that defeated him.
Loki grinned sadly.
It was...so messed up. He should have died instead of his brother.
Strange came back along Banner and made a portal. Loki heard them talking in the park before they came back, Tony Stark with them.
"He's supposed to be dead," Stark stated, pointing a finger at him. Wong came back as Loki merely looked at the billionaire. "What's he doing here?"
"Tony, he's fine," Banner assured him.
"What? How can you...New York…"
"A lot has happened but," Bruce shot him a look, "I've fought by his side, Hulk as well. He's…"
"If you resent me for attacking years ago, then be glad. The one who ordered me to come here fetch the Tesseract is on his way." It got Tony's attention.
Loki stood up.
"The Mad Titan, Thanos. The man who has two Infinity Stones. The man who killed my brother, and your goddaughter." Tony paled and gulped.
Strange and Banner stopped him before he could grab Loki by the throat.
"Say that again!"
"Tony, I'm sorry," Bruce told the scientist. Tony looked at him. "I'm sorry." Tony gulped and he looked at Strange.
"It's your fault. She visited and then she was in space because you sent her there, it's your fault. Her death is on you!" He took a deep breath and went to a couch to sit down. "I want the whole story, from the beginning. She only gave me details here and there. Who's that guy, what he wants, how long do we have, everything."
"The Mad Titan Thanos is from the planet Titan. His goal is to 'save' the universe from extinction due to limited resources," Loki explained. "His way to it is to exterminate half of each population in the universe. Gathering all Infinity Stones and use them would allow him to do it like that." Loki snapped his fingers. "Just with the snap of his fingers. So far, he has the Power Stone and now, the Space Stone that was inside the Tesseract."
"You helped him."
"I had my reasons."
"Oh really, reasons? I'll give you…" Tony started, stomping to Loki.
"After my fight with my brother, I fell into the void and landed at his feet. It was serve him or be killed Stark, I didn't have a choice!"
"You had one, you just decided to be a tyrant!"
"Because the noble Tony Stark would have done things diff…"
"Enough!" Strange ordered them, forcing them apart. "We don't have much time and fighting won't do anything! Wong, explain the stones." Wong nodded.
With magic, the scene changed between them.
"At the dawn of the universe, there was nothing. Then boom." An explosion of lights, the Big Bang. "The Big Bang sent six elemental crystals hurtling across the virgin universe. These Infinity Stones, each control an aspect of existence."
"Space." A blue stone. "Power." Purple. "Soul." Orange. "Reality." Red. "Mind." Yellow. "And Time," Strange said, opening the Eye of Agamotto.
"I did not see that one coming," Loki admitted with a wry smirk.
"He's a plague and he's coming to Earth as we speak, it's…" Bruce stopped, out of breath. "He has two Stones already, it makes him the most powerful being in the universe already. We need to find Vision Tony, or he'll be killed for the Mind Stone. Please tell me you're going to call Steve even if you guys broke up when we were off Earth."
"Add...Addison told you?" He had just learned his goddaughter had been killed. Saying her name was hard, but he couldn't start mourning now, or think about how to tell Pepper.
Addison was supposed to be a part of their wedding but now…
"Yes she did. I'm sorry neither Thor or I were there to deal with the consequences like you all but...now's not the time to give anyone the cold shoulder." Tony pursed his lips and nodded slowly, taking a flip phone.
They couldn't call him though as the air got tensed suddenly.
"Are you moving your hair Strange?"
"Not...at the moment no."
"They're here," Loki whispered harshly, stomping outside.
Tony followed him, people bumping into them. A huge space ship was above New York.
May 30th, Avengers Compound
Pietro was bored. Addison was off-world, Wanda in Scotland with Vision and there was nothing to do.
He had lost count of the number of time he ran around the Compound.
However, when a circle of orange sparks appeared outside out of nowhere, he jumped on his feet and ran at it. He had seen Addison do something similar, so it was magic.
The Sokovian blinked at Bruce.
"Pietro?"
"Doctor Banner? You're missing." Bruce nodded.
"Yeah I know." Pietro looked at the wounded man next to him. "Loki Lauf…"
"Odinson. Loki Odinson."
"Like Thor? Is he here?" They exchanged a look. "I don't like that. Did you see Stark before?" Rhodey arrived behind them with a long face.
"Bruce." He looked at Loki up and down as he walked closer to them. "You're coming from New York?" They nodded.
"Tony followed the ship when it left with Strange."
"Wait, Strange was kidnapped?" Pietro asked, confused. "The hell is happening?"
"They're going for Vision now." Pietro paled.
"Wanda is with him, it's…"
"Pietro, we don't know what's happening, let's listen to them before acting." The Sokovian nodded hesitantly at Rhodey.
They listened to Banner silently, accepting the news with difficulty. Once Bruce was done talking, Pietro stood up and started pacing. His fist met the wall after a few seconds, a lump in his throat.
"We've lost two strong fighters and we may very well have lost Tony and Strange for good as well," Rhodey summed up. "I'm going to have to deal with Ross soon I think."
"Not him…" Bruce muttered under his breath.
"Don't worry, I won't tell him about any of you. If anything, try to rest a little while you can. Pietro, contact the Institute. The Avengers and Uncanny Avengers have to assemble asap."
"I'm on it."
"Uncanny Avengers?"
"Well after some events we got new members and a whole new Avengers team. They deal with mutant threats if it's too much for the X-Men and...well it's too long to explain. Let's say right now the world is in danger so they should help."
May 30th, Stolen Quinjet, somewhere above the United Kingdom
"Are you sure Steve?" Sam asked him as he had just stated they were going home.
"We need to regroup and the Avengers Compound is the one place we all have in common, especially now there are new members. Vision, Wanda, what can you tell us?"
"We need strong fighters and they are. Miss Carter has left Earth a few months ago but maybe she got back safely."
"Wait, left Earth?" Sam asked him with wide eyes.
"You all missed a lot," Wanda told them. Steve kept staring in front of him.
"Yeah well, apart from watching the news we couldn't do much," Sam muttered quietly, shooting Steve a quick look.
When Natasha found them, he had started to be more like himself but what Addison had told him had stuck.
Steve had not mentioned Bruce calling him. Right now, they needed to regroup, even if Tony was missing, even if Addison was missing, even if Thor was missing.
He...couldn't believe he would lose three teammates in such a short amount of time. Sure, Thor had been gone since Sokovia and he had not seen Tony or Addison since the Accords, and he had made mistakes, but they were still his teammates to him. Picturing a team without them was...wrong.
It annoyed him, but a team without Tony tinkering and being a sarcastic know-it-all wouldn't be a team.
A team without Thor's booming voice, good heart and clumsiness wouldn't be a team.
A team without Addison's sarcasm and humor in the worst times wouldn't be a team.
Yet, it would be the team they'd get. It wouldn't be his team, but it would be the best team they could get.
They arrived a few hours later in the night. He was the first to leave the jet, walking straight to the communication room. It was familiar, yet when he entered the Compound he saw the differences. Tony had remodeled the place.
"You're almost late." They looked to the right. Pietro was leaning on the wall, arms crossed. "Long time no see Captain."
"Pietro," Steve replied stiffly. Pietro stared at him for a few seconds before going to his sister.
"You alright?"
"Yes, I'm fine, it's…" She gestured at the wound on her forehead. "It's nothing, but Vis…"
"Yeah, they want the Stone." Pietro looked at Steve. "Rhodes is in the workshop, talking to a Ross hologram and probably putting him back in his place. Follow me you two." He left with Wanda and Vision.
"Doctor McCoy," Vision greeted the scientist, who was talking with Bruce. "Doctor Banner."
"And that is…" Wanda trailed off, watching Loki staring at Hank.
"Loki. From New York."
"Thor's brother?"
"Himself," Pietro confirmed.
"I'm here too!" They looked at the man in red. "When can I kill the bastard who got Addison?"
"Not until we know where he is, and even then…" Bruce said with pursed lips. "I'm going to greet the team."
"There's not much to greet apparently," Loki commented. He received glares in return.
"It's really not the time."
A few minutes later, the rest of the group arrived. Natasha and Steve stopped at the sight of Loki and Bruce immediately went between them.
"Bruce, what is he doing here?" Natasha asked him, her sharp eyes never leaving Loki.
"Thor said he was dead."
"Loki faked his death. Look guys, I know it's hard to believe, but he's on our side."
"Didn't he try to take over the world and the stones in 2012?" Sam asked him.
"You weren't there," Loki retorted, Sam frowning at him.
"Bruce," Steve said.
"I've fought by his side in Asgard along Thor and Addison guys. You're allowed not to trust him, but I've seen for myself that right now, we can. He probably doesn't care Earth…"
"You wound me, I love this place," Loki commented sarcastically, which got him the scientist's annoyed look.
"But he cares about half his people and Thor dead. Plus, Addison saved his life on the Statesman so if anything, he has a debt to the Avengers."
"She saved him?" Natasha repeated quietly. Bruce gulped and nodded.
"When we left thanks to Heimdall...Thor and her were the only ones standing against Thanos and his goons." Steve shot Loki a look.
"You can trust my rage, Captain," Loki assured him seriously.
"You stab us in the back or hide information from us and we'll take care of you, again," Steve stated like a promise. Loki pursed his lips and nodded.
"Now that is cleared, we've gotta assume they're going to be back, right?" Rhodey asked them.
"They can find us," Wanda added.
"We need all hands on deck. The Institute are getting ready to send help," Bruce said, Hank nodded in agreement. "The new team…"
"The Avengers Unity Squad," Pietro said.
"Yes, they're getting ready as well. Where's Clint?"
"He retired. After the whole Sokovia fiasco, him and Scott got a deal, it was too much for their families," Natasha explained to him.
"Scott? Huh...Ant-Man? I know Spider-Man followed Tony so...look guys, Thanos has the biggest army in the universe right now, we need everyone and we need to get this stone out of Vision's forehead."
"We need to destroy it."
"It would destroy you too," Wanda said immediately, taking a step toward him.
"I know but...I've been thinking about, if it is exposed to the same signature energy, with enough intensity…"
"No, we're not discussing something like this," she replied angrily. Pietro put his hand on her shoulder.
"Bruce, Doctor McCoy, can you remove the stone?"
"We don't have the necessary equipment here," Hank replied, looking at Vision. "And who knows how long it would take."
"Then…" Vision started, only to be interrupted by Steve.
"We need a place with the equipment and protection to get us time." He looked at Vision. "We don't trade lives Vision. If there's a chance to keep you alive, we'll take it."
"Do you have something in mind?" Bruce asked him.
"Yes. I know a place."
