Chapter 5: Three wishes.
It was the first weekend both Andy and Nick had had off together for months, and, in the weeks since the start of their engagement, they had made arrangements for their wedding, for Boxing Day, in a church in the city. Tracey, of course, was going to be Andy's maid of honour. Making these plans had made it all suddenly, even more real than it had been before and Andy had been surprised that her mother had been so involved, but she had insisted, saying that she had missed so many things in her daughter's life and she did not want to miss her wedding. For the past couple of weeks, their shifts had been organised in such a way that they had hardly seen each other, so a couple of days together was a welcome treat for the engaged couple.
The morning was spent in their PJs on the sofa watching old French films, like they'd done when they'd been undercover for 6 months and this was time they treasured together. Nick could tell there was something bothering Andy, but he waited until she was ready to talk.
As the 5th French film was coming to an end, Nick prepared lunch for the two of them and, when he sat down, Andy's face was looking more troubled than it had before, so he muted the TV and asked, "Andy, what's wrong? You're wearing your worried face."
Sighing, Andy turned around on the sofa to face her fiancée. "I was talking to Clare- my mum- yesterday and she wants me to invite her other kids. You know, the ones she had in her second marriage after she left me and Dad. I have a half-brother and sister, who I've never met and she thinks our wedding would be a good time to meet them."
"But you don't want to?"
"Well, they're a reminder of the fact that she left me and Dad. I don't know them and I want our wedding to be perfect." Andy paused, then added, "But I'm always about seeing the best in people and maybe she's right- maybe it would be a good time to meet them? Maybe I should finally forgive my mum and actually meet my brother and sister?"
Nick was silent for a while as he listened to Andy before he responded, "I think, if you want to reach out to them, it's a good time to, but, if you don't, that's fine. I'll support you, whatever you decide." He pressed his lips together before adding, "I've decided I want to invite Finn. We haven't spoken for about 2 years, but he's my brother. My parents would've wanted me to invite him. You're glad your mum's back in your life, aren't you?"
Andy smiled and nodded, resting her head against Nick's shoulder as she replied, "I am. I'm glad we've managed to build a relationship." She was silent, then she asked, "When was the last time you saw your brother?"
"About 2 weeks ago. We aren't close. After the accident, when we lived at my uncle's, he left me there and ran away and he was 18. I was only 12, but he-he's so bitter. He can't move on with his life because of what happened, but I've done by best to not be like him. Our parents would've wanted him at our wedding. I also want to invite Wendy. She ran the group home I was sent to and she's a great woman. I can't wait for you to meet her. " He kissed Andy and she kissed him back, before they continued to eat their lunch and, after that, they finished their lunch and went to their bedroom.
In the evening, they finally had showers and changed out of their PJs and they watched some more French films together. When Nick fell asleep, Andy watched him sleep and she smiled, then she looked at the engagement ring and kissed it. She loved it because of what is symbolized: The love she and Nick shared. She was still thinking about the situation with her half-siblings when Nick woke up and she decided to ask him, "If you had three wishes, what would they be?"
Rubbing sleep out of his eyes, Nick took a couple of seconds to think. "Mum and Dad to be alive, Finn not to be paralyzed and I don't need a third one."
"What do you mean?"
Nick shrugged and chuckled. "My wish was for you, Andy, and here we are."
Andy smiled at him and kissed him before she whispered, "You stole my heart, Nick. I don't need any wishes, because I have everything I want right here in front of me." They sat together and kissed, with Andy's finger wrapped around her engagement ring and she swore that the only time she would take it off would be at work.
The next day, Nick took Andy to the group home to meet Wendy and the older woman welcomed Andy with open arms and she was so pleased to see that Nick had finally found someone. She really liked Andy, she could see that she and Nick were happy together.
Neither Andy nor Nick could wait until Christmas, because, after that, they would husband and wife and have the rest of their lives together.
