Chapter 17: Breakfast.

At 7, the sun started to rise and Andy was very surprised to see that she had, indeed, fallen asleep, but she was not surprised to see that Nick had fallen asleep. She sat up and rested her head against his shoulder as she said, "I'm sure that sleeping in a chair isn't great for you."

Despite the awful situation, Nick smiled and remarked, "I told you: I was in the Army. I can sleep anything." He looked and Andy and she smiled and kissed him on the cheek before resting her head against his shoulder. Nick was silent for a while, before he whispered, "Andy, your dad knows how much you love him. You don't have to worry about that, I promise you." Andy knew that he was right. "Come on. I don't you don't want to leave your dad, but we need to feed Jem and you need some breakfast."

Andy moved her head from his shoulder and shook her head. "Nick, I can't leave him."

"Andy, you need to eat and we need to feed Jem. It'll be an hour at the most. Your dad wouldn't want you to starve to death, would he?" He stood up and held out his hands, to his wife. "Come on, I'll make you breakfast."

Despite herself, Andy smiled; she loved her husband's breakfasts, so she nodded and stood up and they walked out of the hospital.

As soon as they opened the door of their apartment, Jem ran over to Andy, wagging his tail, jumping up and down to lick her face and Andy was so happy. There was something about this dog that just made her so happy and, especially now that her dad was in the hospital, she was grateful for that pup. Nick was glad to see his wife have a couple of minutes of happiness and he patted Jem before walking over to the oven. He knew how much Andy loved a cooked breakfast. Andy finally released herself from Jem and went into the bathroom for a quick shower. As soon as she checked her phone, she was met with dozens of texts from Tracey, Chloe, Chris, Dove and even Gail, none of which she could answer now. All she could think about was her dad. Sam had seen how upset she had been, first-hand, so she was glad that he had not texted her. He knew her better than that.

After having a shower and drying her hair, Andy was greeted with the smell of her husband's cooked breakfast and she suddenly felt very shaky. "Andy?" Nick asked, seeing her sudden change in posture, so he walked over to her and helped her to sit down on the chair. She was shaking and she could feel the tears welling up in her eyes, but she couldn't do this. She had to be strong. She didn't know if her dad was ever going to wake up. "Andy, Andy, focus on my voice. Andy!" Nick knelt next to her and took hold of her hands and rubbed them.

Finally, Andy's eyes focused, and she shook her head. Her voice was strong. "I can't do this, Nick! I can't lose it like that, not again! I have to be strong for Dad. That's what he would want."

Nick stroked her hair and whispered, "Andy, you don't have to do anything. You just have to be there for your dad and, no matter how you deal with this, I'm here and you have to remember that your dad loves you, so much and you're so lucky to have that."

Andy smiled and wiped away her tears as she whispered back, "I'm lucky to have you, Nick. I don't how I'd cope with this alone." She rested her head against her shoulder and allowed herself to cry. She was so very scared about not being able to talk to her dad again, it had always been the two of them and she didn't know what her life would be without her dad. As she continued to cry, Nick held her in his arms. She was very strong, but she couldn't do this alone, but she didn't have to, because she had her husband and she knew that her dad would know that. Even if her dad did not survive, she would never be alone, because she had him.
