Chapter 20: After Night-Shift.

Whilst most of the time Andy and Nick's shifts synched around each other's, for the past couple of weeks, that had not been the case; the two of them had hardly seen each other and it was not made any easier by both of them working weekend shifts because of the high-crime rate. They lived together, but they were hardly seeing each other, but they knew that it would not always be like this and, when they were together, they made the most of every second together. Tonight, by the time Andy had finished her day-shift, Nick was on the night-shift and Andy's day-shift started again at 9 in the morning, but they would have a couple of hours together, at least.

Andy had had a dayshift, so by the time night-time came and she returned home, she was exhausted and she smiled at the sight of a note and a defrosted meal Nick had left for her in the kitchen. Her cooking skills were still as bad as they had been when they had been undercover together. As always, Jem was very happy to see her. The pup was growing and loved attention and Nick was far better at training the dog than Andy was. Being together with Jem made Andy imagine what she and Nick would be like with their own child, but she tried not to think about that, because she was still not pregnant and it was disappointing, because she and Nick had been trying since March and she could not believe how calm her husband was about the whole thing. She wanted a child who was half her and half Nick. She wanted to be a mum and he wanted to be a dad, but he kept telling her that they had to be patient.

The note Nick had left Andy was very sweet, so she put it up on the fridge, before she gave Jem some food and then defrosted the lasagna Nick had left for her. If it had not been there, she would have ordered a take-away, so she knew that this was a healthier option. It was a Thursday night and both she and Nick had the weekend off. They just had one more shift.

After dinner, Andy called her dad, had a shower, then watched some TV before finally going to bed. She loved their flat. It was their home, and it was Jem's home, too. She was so tired that as soon as she lay down in their bed, she closed her eyes, with her arms stretched out to her husband's side of the bed. Jem saw an opportunity and jumped up onto the bed, lying down on Nick's side of the bed. Andy knew that her husband would not want Jem there, but she liked the fact that he was there, so she patted Jem as he lay his head down and she texted Nick to say goodnight, before she finally closed her eyes and fell asleep.

At about 6:00 in the morning, Nick left the station and made his way home and, by the time he arrived home, because of the early-morning traffic, it was 6:30. He had seen Andy's goodnight text, but he had not replied because he was home now.

As soon as Nick opened the door of their flat, he was greeted by Jem, who was wagging his tail and licking him, excited to see one of his owners. Nick gave the pup a couple of pats before he told him to go to bed, which meant the basket in his and Andy's bedroom. He knew that the pup had been in his bed, because his wife was so soft. He dropped his rucksack and jacket in the kitchen, before walking into their bedroom and, from taking one look at the smile on Andy's face, he knew that she was awake. Pretending to be asleep, but she was never good at pretending, anything.

After changing, Nick lay down in the bed, wrapping his arms around Andy and he planted a kiss on her head, before he said, "I know Jem's been there. Don't deny it and don't pretend to be asleep!"

As predicted, Andy started laughing and opened her eyes, leaning closer to her husband and kissing him before she used the puppy eyes and said, "But he looked so cute and cold! I couldn't just make him sleep in that basket."

"Next time I see him on my side of the bed, he's going in a crate for the night." Nick was half-joking. He stroked Andy's face and asked, "How was your day? It feels like we're hardly seen each other."

Running her hands through his hair, Andy whispered, "I know. My shift starts at 9." A look appeared in her eyes and she chuckled before whispering, "We're together now. Alone." She chuckled again and started to take off his top.

Nick mirrored her actions, by starting to take off her top, before he asked, teasing her, "You don't think we should try and get some sleep?"

Andy sat up in bed. It was very cold now that her top was totally naked, so she replied, "No. Sleeping is overrated and it's really cold." She almost dove back into their bed, pulling the covers over her body and Nick's lips caught hers in a passionate kiss, then they looked at each other for a couple of seconds, before continuing to make love, both hoping that, this time, it would result in the conception of their baby.

When Andy's alarm woke her up at 8:30, she was not surprised to see that her husband was sound asleep, so she left their bedroom and had a shower. She walked back into their bedroom, drying her hair with a towel and Nick was sitting up in bed, training Jem to sit still, even if there was food around.

She sat down with the two of them as she continued to dry her hair.

"You know what I don't understand?" Her husband started to speak. "Why don't Chloe and Dove talk to each other, instead of talking to us? Dove wants to get married and Chloe doesn't, but they haven't talked to each other about it and if Chloe wants someone to talk to Dove, she should talk to Diaz."

Andy shook her head and reached for the hair-dryer as she replied, "I know. They just need to talk to each other." Her husband was staring at her, smiling, so she turned around and asked, laughing, "What are you looking at?"

Titling his head to the side and smiling, Nick just replied, "You. You make me so happy and I love you so much." He sat up and cupped her face in his hands, kissing her and hugging her before saying, "I'll see you tonight. We have the whole weekend together."

Andy rested her forehead against Nick's and smiled at him, looking into his brown eyes. "I feel the same about you, obviously. I love you. I'll see you tonight." They shared another kiss, then Andy said bye to Jem, then left their flat, still hoping that her and Nick's wish would soon be granted; that they would have a child, who would be created by their love for each other. She remembered Nick's words to her when he had told her that he had feelings for her when they had listening to Noelle and Frank's wedding vows; that she was magical and after Christian had been kidnapped, when he had told her that she was the most amazing person he had ever met and that he would wait, for as long as it took. That was the man she loved: Her husband.
