I have been on the road for three months. three long months, that feel like three damn years.
I have been going town to town, state to state, trying to find something. Something, that would tell me that everything is going to be alright. That me and my unborn child would be safe.
I try to remember the good times, but there were far too few of those and I couldn't stay in Boston with my child's father. The good for nothing, violent douche bag, I wish I never laid eyes on.
There was no way in hell, I was going to let him harm my child, I couldn't trust him not to harm him and this is what it took to leave him after many months of abuse and him promising me he wouldn't do it again and how sorry he was.
I'm now, four months pregnant and looking for something more permanent, but I'm scared that He will find us, if I stay somewhere to long.
So, right now, I am driving down a dimly lit road, with just me and a few of my belongings, listening to some cheesy love song on the radio and wondering, where my life went wrong.
However, It doesn't take long, until I come to a sign that reads 'Storybrooke' but there's also some branches blocking the rest of the words.
What a weird name for a town, I think to myself. Before slowing down and stopping the car, right next to the sign.
I then get out of the car for some air and also move the branches, so I can at least see what state I am in.
Ah, I then think to myself, as the sign now says Maine.
I then take a deep breath and look around. There is no other traffic or people. Its kind of peaceful really. I can see the moon and a few stars.
I stay standing there for a while, before thinking about driving back the way I came. But I suddenly see a swan. A damn swan, waddling in the darkness towards Storybrooke.
I didn't even think that they came out at night, but here was one, silently walking along the side of the road and I shake my head in amusement.
I've never been one to look at coincidences but I think this is some sort of sign.
So, I jump back into my yellow bug and head into the town, which shall be my home for at least a few days.
Once I reach the town, I realize that there are a few stores, which are closed and a quirky little diner, which seems to be open.
I could do with a good cup of cocoa and something to eat, I think to myself and I park outside and put a hand on my belly.
"Yes little one, food" I say to my small bump with a chuckle and moments later, I step out the car and head towards the diner, its not to brightly lit and I wonder if it is actually open.
However, a man comes walking out and offers me a nod of his head and walks by me.
Friendly place, I wonder to myself. As, I open the door and head inside.
The bell then chimes above the door, as I enter and I find myself, being stared at my a few of the customers and the waitress behind the counter.
Okay, this is awkward. I think to myself, before stepping forward and up to the counter.
"Hello, how may I help you?" the young brunette waitress says softly.
"Oh, um, can I have a hot chocolate and do you do a grilled cheese?"
"Sure. Take a seat, will bring it right over" she replies and heads off, rather quickly to the kitchen.
I then look around, to see a couple sitting at the far table, staring at me and whispering.
Geez, its like they have never seen a pregnant woman before I sigh and then slip into the closest table to the door, just in case I need to make a run for it.
I lean back in the seat and look out the window. I end up staring into space for a while, until I hear the waitress say "Here you go" and I snap my head towards her, as she puts down my drink upon the table.
"Thanks" I reply simply, whilst putting my hands around the warm mug.
"Your new here" she then says simply and I frown.
"Is it that obvious?" I reply.
"Well, I haven't seen you in here before. Or round town"
"Yeah, well, I'm just stopping by" I try to sound polite.
"Well, if your thinking of staying a while, there's a local bed and breakfast that has vacancies"
"Thanks, I'll keep that in mind"
"Okay" she then walks off and I take a deep breath.
An hour later.
"How was your meal?" The waitress asks me, as she comes to collect my plate.
"Great. I may stay in this town a while longer, just for the food" I chuckle and I feel a little less cranky, now I have a full belly.
"Please do. Its not a bad place, once you get used to the people in it" the waitress jokes and I smile.
"Yeah, I know what you mean" I then reply, as I look around the diner and see that an older man with a cane, is looking over at me. His got a creepy smirk upon his face and it makes me cringe.
"I'm Ruby, by the way" the woman then says with a smile and I nod.
"I'm Emma"
"Nice to meet you Emma. Maybe, I'll see you again"
"Maybe you will" I chuckle and she walks off, leaving me to decide that it time to go and I stand up, pay for my order and leave to find this Bed and Breakfast, that the waitress had recommended.
It doesn't take me long to find the bed and breakfast. Its certainly not as modern as most places. Its like this town is in some kind of a time warp.
I am shown to a small double room and its very outdated but It will do for now, I think to myself, as I look around and dump my bag upon the bed.
It is also pretty handy that this room is cheap. As I only have two hundred dollars to my name.
I need to find a job, that's for sure.
I then, put the few clothes that I have, into the wardrobe and stuff the bag under the bed.
"Right" I say out loud and look to the clock upon the wall. 8.32pm.
"Early night it is"
The next morning, I wake up early and decide to head out and have a look around the town.
It is certainly, more busier than last night. There's a man walking his dog, a yellow school bus picking up kids to go to school and just people going about there business.
There's also a library, some old clocktower, a pawnshop and a sheriffs station that has a notice board and I decide to go look upon it, to see if there are any jobs going.
I read through a few few of the cards, Missing items, things for sale, a vacancy for a library assistant. Totally not me.
But then, I see a card, that reads Vacancy for a deputy. Flexible hours and uniform provided.
My experience as a bounty hunter, could come in handy for this.
"Hello mam" I then hear a man's voice say, from next to me and I look to my left. To find a slightly taller, middle aged man looking at me.
"Hi" I reply cautiously.
"I'm the local sheriff, David Nolan. Where you looking for anything in particular" he says, pointing to the notice board.
"Oh, not really but the deputy job seems interesting"
"Yes, it can be. Are you interested?" he asks seriously.
"I think so. I used to be a bounty hunter" I say proudly.
The man's eyebrows rise up in surprise.
"Is that so? why don't you come inside and I'll get you an application. If your interested"
"Sure" I smile and follow the man into the station and once inside, I take notice of the desks, filling cabinets and there's even a dart board.
A dart board, in a police station, who would of thought. I chuckle to myself.
"Here you go. I didn't catch your name?" David then asks, whilst handing me an application form.
"Emma, Emma Swan"
"Nice to meet you Emma"
"You too" I put my hand to my stomach and then add "I'm four months pregnant, will that effect my application?"
"No, I don't think so. To be honest, we haven't had a deputy here in a very long time. So, even if you were to stay in the role for a few months it would be better than nothing"
"That's good to know"
"Well, if you get that filled in, me and the mayor will look it over and get back to you"
"Oh, thanks. Who is the mayor?" I then ask out of curiosity.
"Miss Mills" he replies simply.
"Okay. Thanks"
"No problem" the mans smiles and I head out the door and down to the diner. Where I sit, at my now usual table and look over the application.
A week later.
I'm still at the bed and breakfast but things are beginning to get settled.
I have a three month trail at the sheriffs station and I have made at least one friend. Who happens to be he waitress from the diner. She has invited me to a small gathering at her apartment tonight, which should be fun.
I decide to spend the day around town, until its time to get ready and go to Ruby's apartment.
I arrive a little early and help get drinks laid out, even though I'm on the orange juice tonight.
"Come on, loosen up" Ruby tells me, as she sets out some bottles of alcohol.
"I know, Its just I've never met these people that you've invited"
"Well, you know Mary Margaret"
"Briefly, she's David's wife right?"
"Yeah that's her, your love her"
I then scoff and soon enough, the room is filled with many voices and music.
"Its been a long time, since I've been to a party" I tell Ruby, whilst she's dancing to some tune I've never heard.
"This isn't a party" she laughs "Your know when I have a party"
"Okay" I roll my eyes, she's clearly already a little tipsy and she goes off to talk to some woman, I think her name is Belle.
I am then approached by Mary Margaret, who is too nosey for her own good. She wants to know everything about me and where's the father of my baby.
"A child must have its father in their life" she tells me seriously and I can't take another minute of this.
"Not if the father is a good for nothing violent thug" I then snap at her and that seems to shut her up.
Good, I think to myself but it doesn't last long, as she decides to tell me how great her life is and I want to scream.
By 10 o'clock, I've had enough. I don't think I can hear another yarn from Mary Margaret, without losing it.
"I'm gonna go" I tell Ruby, who is filling up her glass in the kitchen.
"So soon?"
"Yeah, I should get back to the bed and breakfast"
"Okay, see you tomorrow?"
"Yeah, sure" I reply with a smile and then make my way to the door, grabbing my coat and then walking out and down the stairs.
Once outside, I take a slow walk towards the bed and breakfast.
However, I end up walking past the bed and breakfast and stroll down a few roads, I am yet to go down.
I end up, walking past some pretty expensive houses, must with there lights off.
Its not until, I stroll down Mifflin Street, that I realize. That every house I've seen so far, is nothing, compared to the one I am now staring at.
Its huge. A proper mansion. Lots of windows, a big ass porch, hedges, the works.
I wonder who lives in this place. Whoever they are, must be pretty important. Or just rich.
There's a dark coloured Mercedes out front and a black and white cat, laying upon the bonnet.
I then step forward, towards the cat. Who now looks at me and meows.
"Hello tom cat" I greet and chuckle to myself, as the cat now stands up and wants to be petted.
"Your pretty friendly" I then say, as he starts purring.
It is then, that I hear a door click open and a voice call out.
"Henry" the soft lovely voice says and I don't know weather to hide or run.
I'm like a deer in headlights, as the woman spots me and she heads over to me rather quickly.
The closer she gets, the more harder my heart beats.
She's wearing a well fitting grey dress, her short dark hair is slightly messy but still, she is the most stunning woman I have ever laid eyes upon.
"Excuse me, what do you think you are doing?" she says harshly and I grimace at her tone.
"Um, I..." Why can't I get my words out.
The woman then takes a deep breath and quickly picks up her the cat. Who I believe is Henry.
"What are you doing out here, at this time of night. Are you a cat thief?" she asks seriously and I can tell, she's a little cautious of me.
"I was just out for a walk. Actually, I was at a party but couldn't take any more of Mary Margaret's self-righteous talk, so I left and have ended up here"
I then see a smirk, appear upon the woman's face.
"I am so glad to hear, that someone else finds her just as annoying as I do. Everyone loves her."
"That's hard to believe"
"Yes indeed" The woman then places her cat upon the ground and he goes running off, into the house and she looks back to me.
"My name is Miss Mills" She introduces herself to me and holds out her hand to shake.
"Oh, so your the mayor" I say in awe and without thinking and she just smiles. A wonderful smile.
"Yes, I hope you haven't heard too many bad things about me" she grimaces.
"No, Nothing bad at all" I reach out and shake her hand. I think, I'm smiling at her like a fool but I don't care.
"That's good to know and may I ask, who you are dear?"
"Oh, I'm Emma, Emma Swan" I then answer simply and her eyes widen slightly and she lets go of my hand. I feel the loss instantly and I don't understand, why I should feel like that.
"Soon to be our new deputy?" she then asks and I nod.
"Well, its nice to finally put a face to the name. Will you be okay getting back home?"
"Sure. I better head back" I step back.
"Okay, well, Goodnight Miss Swan"
"Goodnight Mayor Mills" I shallow thickly and quickly step away, walking back the way I came and after about fifteen steps, I look back and see that the woman is back on her porch and stepping inside her house and It makes me wonder, if she has a family waiting for her inside...
This was just an idea that popped into my head and wanted to share. Thanks for reading everyone.
