Author's Notes: Hey everyone, I hope that you liked the last chapter and will like this one as well. As always I own nothing, Games Workshop does.
Fortunately, the other werewolf left behind a distinctive smell and was only minutes ahead of Karl. Karl was hindered because he had to remain in his human form and could neither move as fast or smell as well as he would like to and he lost the trail a few times but he quickly picked it up again each time. His target stayed to the back alleys and avoided going to more crowed parts of the city, clearly in order to avoid being seen and causing a mob to form. Unfortunately, in order to avoid this was what forced Karl to remain in his human form.
He ran through the dark streets, focused on the scent and not really noticing where he was headed, when he suddenly lost the scent. He ground to a halt in confusion. Where had it gone? Surely the other werewolf could not just disappear into thin air? He turned and went back to the spot where he had last had the scent and attempted to take up the scent again. That was when he saw the manhole cover and it became clear, he prey had gone done into the sewers. Karl pulled the cover off and dropped down after him.
The smell of human waste and all the other refuse which made its way into the sewers to rot hit Karl like a physical force and nearly made him gag. He gritted his teeth and forced himself to take a whiff but it was no good, there were simply too many smells and they were too powerful, and he could not pick up the smell of the other werewolf. As he stood there, attempting to decide what to do, he looked down. The walkway next to where the sewage flowed through was covered with filth and grime which left clear impressions of recent footmarks which could easily be followed, from the length of the strides it appeared that the other werewolf had shifted into his human form, probably to deal with the smell. Karl took off following them, he wanted to run but he was afraid of slipping on the filth, the thought of falling into the sewage made him shudder.
The trail took several turns and in the poor lighting he lost the trail several times and had to double back to find the trail again. Eventually he came to a ladder leading up to another manhole, he looked around but did not see any tracks beyond the ladder so he went up it. There was no one around when he came up but the smell of the sewer was clearly detectable and simplicity itself to follow. From somewhere far off he heard a watchman call the midnight hour, in addition to telling him the hour it also told Karl that wherever he was it was clearly in a better art of the city if the Watch patrolled it, it would appear that the werewolf preferred to do his hunting far from where he made his lair. At last the smell led toward what appeared to be several warehouses, some of them guarded by what looked like hired muscle.
Making sure to stay close to the shadows Karl crept closer to the one the smell led to, the front of it was guarded but the smell led around the back, following the smell Karl saw a single door hidden behind some stacked barrels. The door was locked but when he threw himself against it the door broke open. Knowing that would have given him away, if his smell had not done so already, he went for his weapons and prepared for an attack but everything remained silent. Cautiously, Karl stepped from the doorway and proceeded into the warehouse.
For the most part it was empty and lit by a single lantern hanging from a hook near the double doors at the entrance. Karl considered taking the lantern but decided against it. The smell led up to the second level so Karl headed towards a ladder leading up to it. In case his target was waiting for him at the top he sheathed his swords and drew his pistol. He slowly climbed up the ladder, pausing every few rungs to listen for sounds of movement but he heard nothing. When he got to the top he brought his pistol up to level it over the top and slowly raised himself up just enough to peek over the edge but again there was nothing present, his prey had somehow given him the slip.
At first Karl thought that there was nothing present but a second glance showed that there was something present. Further back there was what appeared to be a living space, it seemed that this was indeed his prey's lair. There was a bedroll as well as a burlap bag which Karl assumed was filled with the other werewolf's possessions. There was also a barrel with several candle stubs on it. Scattered on the floor were several bottles as well as a scattering of bones, Karl decided he did not want to know where they came from.
Having taken this in Karl stood there for a moment trying to decide what to do. It appeared that his target had evaded him, how he was not sure, so he had to come up with a new course of action. He considered remaining at the warehouse and waiting for his target to return but he discounted that idea almost at once, the fellow would surely smell him and there was the possibility that he knew that Karl had followed him and had already abandoned the warehouse. He tried to think about what Werner would do…Of course! The warehouse! He could check out the ownership of the warehouse, if it was owned by one of the competitors then…His thoughts ground to a halt as an all too familiar smell came to his nose.
He had been wrong, the other werewolf wasn't gone. He was here in the warehouse. And he was standing right behind Karl.
"Hello pup."
