Chapter Eight
"Isn't this different?" Rangiku laughed leaning against the open doorway. I removed myself slowly away from him and he stood tall.
"What is it lieutenant?" He headed back towards his desk and I noticed her trying to hide a very smug look from us.
"The captain commander would like to see you now." She bowed and he left the room, I tried to follow but she grabbed my hand. "You can't go, this is a private conversation."
"Is he going to get in trouble? I want to help explain the situation." I tried but she smiled.
"He'll be fine. He wouldn't let them discard him so easily." Rangiku laughed and released my hand. I sat on his desk she went to lie down on the couch.
"Is this a very serious situation?" I asked her.
"A human entering soul society? It's not as serious as the hollows returning." She looked at me. "They won't dismiss him that quickly, he's one of the best and they need him. If anything they'll probably slap him on the wrist and lock him in the cell for a couple of days." She yawned and I walked towards the window.
"He's pretty important then?" I asked.
"Of course he is." She sat up to look at me. "Aren't you at all the tiniest bit curious why someone so much younger than us is our captain?" I nodded. "He's quite brilliant actually and for someone so young he's very powerful." She patted the seat beside her and I oblige. "I think with all his flaws Toshiro did a very smart thing."
"What's that?" I wondered.
"Saving your life, I mean now you two can be together." I shook my head.
"I agree there is a strong physically attraction between us but, everything is moving too fast." I place my hands up.
"So you do find him attractive?" She teased and I laughed.
"And you don't?" I watched her.
"No, I do but… he's too serious for my liking and it'll be like dating my brother, so no thanks." Suddenly the door slid open and Renji walked in.
"Here you are loafing around while I was searching for you." He seemed annoyed.
"Why were you looking for me?" She asked innocently.
"Because we were supposed to be training together." He came over and sat down beside her.
"The captain wanted me here to help with the paper work." She lied.
"You mean the paper work he already finished?" He looked at the barely there stacked of paper that was no longer on his clean desk. She only smiled after getting caught. The both of them started laughing and I had no reaction to any of this.
"You look really good in that robe little Kuorsaki." He winked at me. I hit him and he continued to laugh.
"She isn't for you pervert." Rangiku tugged on his ears.
"I know, I know. She's the captains." He laughed.
"Actually I belong to me." I started but Rangiku interrupted placing her hand in front of my face.
"We know, Rukia if anything has warned us about your stubborn personality. How we should be extremely careful about what we say around you."
"We aren't afraid of you little one so were going to speak our minds." Renji put in. I smiled at that, why should they be afraid? They hunted worst thing than me so they could be as blunt as they wanted. The door slid open again and a very stern looking captain walked in. The both of them stood up.
"You both need to be in the training halls, now." He ordered.
"Yes, Captain." They saluted and left the two of us. He stood there at first unmoved.
"Are you in a lot of trouble?" I asked walking towards him.
"Are you here to make my life more difficult?" I heard him sigh.
"Yes, that was my plan." I mocked.
"Do you realize what has to be done?" He glared at me with those frozen turquoise eyes. I put my hands up to keep us at a distance from each other. He kept moving forward until he had me backed up against the wall.
"What has to be done?" I challenged.
"The captain commander would like to speak to you to explain our situation." That was vague. Why had he used ours, instead of mine?
"What you've done is really bad isn't it?" I questioned as he stepped closer making me press my hands against his chest.
"They say no good deed goes unpunished." He quoted. Why did everyone keep saying that to me? Did they not do any kind of deeds here?
"We're both going to get punished for this deed aren't we?" I asked looking up at him.
"I'll take all of the punishment because it was what I did to save you, so you don't have to worry about that." Just like someone who was fearless to accept his fate without question.
"It hardly seems fair to punish someone for doing a good thing. Your laws are too strict." I tried to move away from him but his arms blocked my escape.
"Just tell me you're thankful that I saved your life."
"I am thankful." I agreed.
"You're still upset that I did it without thinking about the consequences?"
"I don't want you to lose everything you worked so hard for on my account." My hands remained on his stone like chest.
"I never lose." He corrected and stepped slowly away from me.
The meeting seemed to go on and on and I was so bored just sitting there as they read all the rules he broke, all the punishment he was going to receive, He didn't say a word in defense. He stood there in from of all the captains and I could feel the air growing colder. He must have been angry.
"Capatin Hitsugaya, because the laws of our world have never allowed anything other than a Soul to enter you will be responsible for Miss Karin Kurosaki, though her spirit level is the one thing keeping her from being crushed to death, we're afraid that alone will not help her survive. You need to transfer your energy into her body." When that was said I saw a sudden change in his expression. It looked darker. I wished Rangiku was here to explain what that meant. They ushered me out of the room after that was said and he continued to stand there listening to the captain commander.
I found Rangiku sitting outside on the bench with Renji.
"You're done your training?" I asked approaching them.
"For now." Renji answered.
"What did they say Karin?" Rangiku asked.
"He's going to spend thirty days in a cell and he has to transfer his spiritual energy into me, how does that work?" With that Renji nearly fell off the bench and Rangiku almost choked on the water she was drinking.
"Ichigo is going to kill Toshiro." Rangiku laughed.
"This is really bad, I mean for the captain." Renji was smirking now.
"It looked like Ichigo wanted them to be together, so he might not kill Toshiro." Rangiku retracted her recent statement.
"He's going to kill him." Renji replied. I placed my hand on my waist and interrupted them.
"Are you going to tell me what's going on?"
"Think a lot of physical contact." Rangiku winked at me. I paused for that moment and then I found myself blushing.
"That's a little extreme, we just met." Like saying that was going to change anything.
"This is a first for everyone, whatever the reasoning they're trying to keep you alive long enough to return you to the human world." That made sense, but to go that far? He must feel like I'm bringing him to his knees. It wasn't only my world that was changing, his was as well. The pressure must be destroying him internally; there would be no going back from what we had to do. I was sure he knew this and I was sure he would regret it.
"Everything's going to be okay Ichigo's little sister; we will take good care of you." Renji placed an arm around me.
"Why do I feel so sad for him?" I looked over to Rangiku.
"Because his one good deed is the reason all of this is happening." She also placed an arm around me.
It was after dinner I bumped into him walking towards his office. We stopped in front of each other.
"Are you alright?" I asked him. His turquoise eyes lingered over mine.
"You should be worried about yourself; I've never done a spiritual transfer before so the question is: do you trust me?"
"I do trust you; I'm worried that you're taking your duties too far." I said now as I moved closer to him.
"If I don't do this, I will atone for it for the rest of my life."
"Even if you feel responsible for my well-being, you don't have to put all the pressure on yourself to make this right, we can always find another way." I tried reassuring him.
"This is the only way to save your life, and nothing you say will change my mind." He was stubborn too. With my one hand on his chest I felt his heartbeat furiously.
