Happy Fourth, lovelies! Here I am with an update for "Eternal Flame." It's sort of a follow-up to Chapter 9, "A Song for Klaus." Anyway, hope you enjoy and thank for the support you've been giving me since this journey began. NEVER LOSE THE KLAROLINE FAITH!
We can't afford to be innocent
stand up and face the enemy.
It's a do or die situation - we will be invincible.
And with the power of conviction there is no sacrifice.
It's a do or die situation - we will be invincible.
New Orleans – Spring, 2018
Klaus sat in his place in the audience, looking around at the people gathered, smiling at them. They were here for the same reason he was: the performance that Caroline was going to putting on in just a few short minutes. Though, the Original hybrid was here for a different reason than they were. His had been a personal invitation from the blonde vampire herself, and there was next to nothing he wouldn't do for her.
"I take it you're looking forward to hearing Miss Forbes sing, Niklaus?"
The voice of his brother, Elijah, brought him out of his reverie and he looked in his direction. "Indeed I am, brother. Caroline has the voice of an angel. I had the opportunity to hear it for myself at the Mystic Grill four years ago. Granted, my presence there was a bit surprising for her, but she gave the performance of a lifetime."
"I have no doubt of it, and I'm only sorry I didn't get to experience it with you," said Elijah. "Though, don't let me spoil whatever plans you two may have following the performance. I know that you probably want to be alone, and I will let you have your privacy."
Klaus smiled at his brother. He'd say this for Elijah, he was quite the gentleman and he knew not to overstep his boundaries. He was about to say something to that effect when the lights dimmed and the master of ceremonies stepped out, smiling at the people in attendance.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," he said. "Tonight, you are in for a special treat, because we have us a very talented young lady who comes to us from a small town in Virginia known as Mystic Falls. I know that you are eager to hear her, so I won't waste her time or yours. So, without further ado, it is my pleasure to present Miss Caroline Forbes."
The audience, including Klaus and Elijah, applauded as Caroline stepped out onto the stage. She looked extremely lovely in the green sequin dress she was wearing, because it made the blonde in her hair stand out. She smiled at the audience, just like the master of ceremonies had done earlier.
"Hello, everyone," she said. "I'd like to dedicate this song to a very special person. I'd say his name, but he knows who he is."
After she finished speaking, the music began to play and after taking a breath, Caroline began to sing the song that she was dedicating to the "very special person in the audience." Klaus smirked knowingly, because the person she was referring to was him. However, he maintained his composure, having been taught that gentlemen minded their manners, no matter what.
You're not alone
Together we stand
I'll be by your side, you know I'll take your hand
When it gets cold
And it feels like the end
There's no place to go
You know I won't give in
No I won't give in
Keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through
Just stay strong
'Cause you know I'm here for you, I'm here for you
There's nothing you could say
Nothing you could do
There's no other way when it comes to the truth
So keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through
So far away
I wish you were here
Before it's too late, this could all disappear
Before the doors close
And it comes to an end
With you by my side I will fight and defend
I'll fight and defend
Yeah, yeah
Keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through
Just stay strong
'Cause you know I'm here for you, I'm here for you
There's nothing you could say
Nothing you could do
There's no other way when it comes to the truth
So keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through
Hear me when I say, when I say I believe
Nothing's gonna change, nothing's gonna change destiny
Whatever's meant to be will work out perfectly
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
La da da da
La da da da
La da da da da da da da da
Keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through
Just stay strong
'Cause you know I'm here for you, I'm here for you
There's nothing you could say
Nothing you could do
There's no other way when it comes to the truth
So keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through
Keep holding on
Keep holding on
There's nothing you could say
Nothing you could do
There's no other way when it comes to the truth
So keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through
After Caroline was finished with her song, everyone in the audience stood up and applauded. The blonde vampire sensed a familiar presence and when she looked up, she saw Klaus. If he was here, that meant he received the personal invitation. Of course, that was what she was counting on.
I knew he couldn't pass up the opportunity to see me again, she thought. I'll be sure to thank him when we're at dinner.
French Quarter – After the Performance...
Klaus smiled at the blonde vampire as they sat across from each other at the restaurant he had taken her to, lifting her hand and kissing her knuckles. "You sang as beautifully as you did four years ago, love."
Caroline smiled as well. "Yeah, I did kick ass tonight, didn't I?" She picked up the glass of wine in her free hand. "I'm glad you came, Klaus."
"I wouldn't have missed it for the world," said Klaus. "When I received your invitation, I knew that I just had to come and hear you."
"I also saw that your brother was with you, even though the invitation was for you alone."
"Yes, well, Elijah was curious, so he tagged along," said Klaus. "Though, you won't have to worry about him joining us, because he told me that he would let us have our privacy. Of course, I also promised that I would give him a detailed report of what went on here."
"Did you actually promise that?" said Caroline. "Klaus, I thought gentlemen didn't kiss and tell?"
Klaus laughed at her reaction. "Relax, love, I lied."
"You shouldn't have lied to your brother like that," said Caroline. "He's going to expect a report from you." She sighed. "Anyway, it was good of you come tonight. It gave me the boost of confidence that I needed."
Klaus leaned across the table and kissed her softly. "And it definitely worked." He then reached into his pocket with his free hand and got down one knee. "Caroline, there's something I want to ask you, and tonight seems like the perfect opportunity in which to do it."
"Klaus, you don't have to do this."
"I do, love, just let me talk." He kissed her knuckles. "Caroline, you had me under a spell from the moment our eyes met. You made me want to be a better man, and I owe you a great deal of gratitude. That is why I come before you tonight as a man, nothing more and nothing less to ask this of you." He opened the small ring box he had in his pocket. "Caroline Lillian Forbes, will you do me the honor of accepting this ring and becoming my wife, my lover, and the Queen of my heart?"
Caroline felt her eyes well up as she looked at the ring. It had a gold band (to match the blonde in her hair) and a dazzling sapphire on top of it (to match the blue in her eyes). She stared at it for a few minutes before looking at Klaus, who was no doubt waiting for her to answer him.
"Yes to all the above."
Klaus smiled as he placed the ring on her finger, kissing it before kissing her lips, Caroline returning the kiss seconds later. The other patrons clapped in the background, but neither of them gave a shit. The only thing they cared about was the moment they were having.
Note: How about that, huh? Thought I'd treat you to an update! Enjoy and have a Happy Fourth, lovelies!
