Chapter 2: Interlude, Emma POV
After a really good weekend filled with books, coffee and, ironically, lots of sleep, I felt like a totally different person on Monday. My usual shift at work was the morning one, which I prefer over any other because it makes me feel really productive. I could come to work in the morning and sleep all afternoon, and I would still feel like I got a lot of things done.
Thankfully, this Monday was a peaceful one, and because of that I got almost all my work done by midmorning. I was proof reading my last evolution note of a girl who was interned because of appendicitis and was operated yesterday -I had to check all my notes because even after almost a year in England, I sometimes wrote in spanish without taking notice- when I got a call asking me to go to the ER to check a patient.
I got to the ER and one of the nurses told me that an infant was brought by his grandparents and that the baby couldn't stop crying. He pointed me to the office where they were told to wait for me and I thanked him for his help.
"Good morning! I'm Dr. Torres, your pediatrician for today." I said smiling after entering the office. Inside, I found the grandparents with a baby not older than a year crying really loud and a boy with hair so blond it was almost white, who look to be about 4 years old.
"Oh, thank God you're here" said the woman who was carrying the baby. "I'm Dr. Granger and this is… well, my husband, who is also Dr. Granger" she blushed a little and I couldn't help but smile at that. The wordplays in english still made me laugh. "We´re dentists." She explained.
"Oh, how lovely! My sister is a dentist too." I instantly took a liking to them. And they seem so worried for the baby, it was endearing. "But tell me, what can I help you with?"
They explained everything in great detail, that they were taking care of their grandsons for the week because their daugther was on a getaway with her husband celebrating their aniversary, that the boys where with them since Saturday and everything was fine until that day, when Leo (the baby) woke up crying louder than usual, that they tried everything, from giving him a bath, feeding him, changing his diapers several times, taking him for a stroll at the park and nothing worked. They told me they didn't want to call their daugther because it was the first time since she had the boys where both she and her husband got enough time from their work to go on a little vacation.
I wrote everything down on the file and prepared to examine the baby, who looked to be almost done crying. Poor thing must be exhausted.
"Alrigth, you can put him in the crib for his examination" I told the grandma. Since the baby was barely awake now, I decided to show a little bit of attention to the other kid, who looked almost as concerned as the Grangers.
"What is your name, darling?" I asked him. He looked afraid when my attention got on him.
"Um…" He gazed at his grandfather with an unsure look before answering me. "Scorpius Malfoy".
"Oh, that's a really interesting name" One I certainly never heard before. I gave him what I hoped was a reassuring smile because, for some reason, he appeared unsure of his own name. "You can call me Emma, I know my surname it's a little difficult to pronounce." He seem to relax at that and even gave me a little smile.
"Yes, you even speak a little funny" He said to me. I couldn't help to laugh out laud at that. I told his grandparents that there was no problem when they started to admonish him.
"Well, that's because I'm not actually from here." I explained to him. "I'm mexican, so my first language is not english, but spanish." He actually looked surprised after I told him that.
After my little chat with him, I got to examine his little brother. Since babies obviously can't talk and tell you where it hurts, as a doctor you have to make a complete examination of them. Everything was going fine and Leo didn't even began to cry again when I started the check up, but everything got worse when I started to examine his tummy. The cry he gave was so loud I couldn't help but cringe. Even the lights went off for a long moment and I got reminded of Boo, the little girl from Monsters, Inc. I mean, the lights couldn't possibly have gone highwire because of a baby's cry, it must have been just some strange coincidence. Still, that was really weird. The hospitals are suppoused to have their own power source, right? But well, what do I know about that.
The Grangers and Scorpius looked really worried, so I assured them that there was nothing to get worried about and that I knew what was actually the problem with little Leo.
After I calmed down the baby and got the prescription for the medicine, I explained to them everything there was to know about the issue and responded their questions.
They were leaving when I remembered to ask for their numbers, as I haven't found a dentist with whom I feel comfortable yet (yes, I am afraid of dentist, but like, who isn't) and they seem like good people.
"Goodbye, Emma! Thank you for helping my brother" Said Scorpius, smiling. My heart melted, that kid was adorable.
"¡Adiós, Scorpius! Oh, but wait!" I told them as I remembered that there were candies in the desk drawer. "Here, take a candy. You're a good brother for Leo, hon."
Since his grandparents are dentists, I didn't think he would be getting much candies this week. I was just doing him a favor as I know what it's like living with one. Poor kid.
The rest of the day went by without much trouble. All my patients where stable and I got ice-cream from the grocery store. By the end, I didn't even remember the hitch with the lights during the ER consultation.
