Summary: The drought is intensifying, the rains are late and Rebecca and Arcanine are beginning to struggle to survive.
Dry Hell
It has been six months since the last time it rained. Only the plants by the river, which was now little more than a stream, were still green. Animals gathered here were on constant lookout. They knew this place now a magnet for predators. Like Rebecca and Arcanine. But they had already eaten. And needed to drink. Rebecca gathered water in the palms of her hands and brought them up to her mouth, savoring every second it washed down her dry throat. Arcanine then picked up a scent.
"Smell something, boy?" Rebecca asked and followed. Arcanine was digging up something. It a lungfish wrapped in a cocoon in an effort to wear out the drought. "Nicely done," Rebecca said as she used her spear to break open the cocoon. Rebecca bit of a huge chunk from the fish then held out for Arcanine, who bit of the head. They went back and forth like that until the fish was eaten. Rebecca rubbed her belly in satisfaction but then heard growling coming from Arcanine. The giant dog looked embarrassed, but Rebecca looked concerned. "I should've let you have most of it." She said.
But suddenly, out of the bushes, jumped a predator. It was a large Gorgosaurus. A distant relative to Sharptooth's species. But as it attacked, Arcanine spewed fire, making the beast back away. It realized this one was not an easy prey. But then it looked to the river bend and saw the other animals fleeing. He figured he should go after prey that is too scared to fight. The Gorgosaurus quickly caught up with one of the beasts. He chased a herd of Styracosaurus, catching up on a straggler. He bit the thigh on the straggler, and pulled a chunk of meat from the leg. The poor beast cried out in pain and horror as it prayed itself lose. The other Styracosaurus regrouped and formed a defensive circle, ready fight of the aggressor. But the Gorgosaurus had what he wanted. He stalked the halting Styracosaurus as it lingered from blood loss and shock. The Gorgosaurus walked over to the beast and knocked it over. The Styracosaurus howled in pain as the predator stepped on it, and began eating it alive.
This predator is a 10 meters long (30 foot) 4 ton killing machine. This valley is his hunting ground. He is the most fearsome predator here. A lone 4 ton Styracosaurus is little match for him. And he gets to eat his fill.
From a cliff, our duo were taking cover under a rock from the heat, as they watched their competitor eat the dead Styracosaurus. "After he's done and goes away, we'll go down there and eat our fill." Rebecca said, and Arcanine nodded. "We made quite a catch today. Food is getting hard to come by. Water is even harder to get." She said and looked up into the clear blue sky. "But the rains should arrive any day now."
One month later
Rebecca and Arcanine were sleeping soundly in their cool cave. The entrance had been sealed with rocks, which only a larger predator could break down. But even so, any predator that large would be unable to get in through the entrance. Nowadays these two spent their time sleeping throughout the day. They heat was just too much. Once the sun had set, they would go out and hunt. But more importantly, they'd try and get something to drink. Now there were only a few ponds here and there to clench their thirsts. They found a puddle and drank nearly all of it.
Rebecca panted heavily. She looked up into the sky. It was clear. Not a cloud in sight. Just the full moon and some stars. "The rain is late," She said in despair. "This is abnormal," She added. Arcanine began urging her. "Right. I'm coming." She said.
They wandered the cold desserts. Without any plants to absorb the heat of the day, the nights became very cold. They crossed paths with the Styracosaurus herd, fast asleep. They had dwindled in numbers. The Gorgosaurus had taken its toll on the herd.
The two hunters decided to move on. Finally, they found something, as evident from the screams of death in the dark. They found an iguana. A large one. Rebecca cut its throat and poured its blood into a makeshift bowl from the shell of a dead tortoise. She then drank some of the blood before letting Arcanine drink the rest. In times of drought, you gotta be resourceful. That means sometimes resorting to drinking blood to stay hydrated. Afterwards, they made a fire and roasted the iguana. Once it was done, Rebecca ripped of a couple of legs and handed the rest of over to Arcanine. He was looking skeptical about eating more than her though.
"Don't worry about me boy. You're so much bigger than me. You need more food than I do. And these legs are enough to keep me sustained for a day." She assured with a smile. Arcanine gave in and ate the roasted lizard. Rebecca looked up into the night sky. "The rains sure are late." She repeated.
The next day, the Styracosaurus herd was uprooting small trees to eat the roots. They didn't offer much nutrition though, being dried up.
Approaching the herd was the Gorgosaurus, seeking a new meal. But his left thigh was wounded by a horn during his last attack. A serious handicap for a predator that is depended on speed in order to get his food. The Styracosaurus herd spots him before he can get into prepare an ambush. They gather together to form a defensive position, waving their horns at him. He roars in frustration at them, and moves on. He knows better than to take them on while they're banded together like that. He's not getting any food here.
Back in their cool cave, Rebecca and Arcanine were sleeping soundly through the hot day, with the entrance once again covered with rocks. Suddenly, they are awoken when they heard scratching from the outside. Arcanine stood up and growled at the entrance where shadows were looming. Rebecca grabbed her spear and took a defensive position. Their assailants were Coelophysis. Three meters long and 15 kilos predators who have adapted to survive in drought. Their small frames make them rely very little on food and water. But in these times, even they are struggling. And they had caught the scent of food in this cave.
One of them poked their snouts through a hole. Rebecca retaliated by piercing it with her spear. Arcanine was about to spew fire, but Rebecca stopped him. "No boy. You'll blow away the wall and let the rest in." She told him.
There were many of them outside. Perhaps fifty of them. But then they scattered when a familiar face appeared. Gorgosaurus had caught sight of the commotion and came here to see if his competitors had found something that could fill his stomach. He sniffed the sealed entrance and was able to pick up Rebecca and Arcanine's scent. He recognized them. But he was desperate for food and brought down the seal.
"Forget what I said before. Shoot!" Rebecca shouted and Arcanine spewed fire at their assailant.
The Gorgosaurus backed away from the fires, and then Rebecca rushed out of the cave and fended him off with her spear. Normally, he'd put up more of a fight. But with his leg being the wait it was, he was too slow. Rebecca slash and thrusted her spear, piercing and cutting the predator's snout. He roars at her and tried biting her, but she easily jumps out of the jaws of death. Arcanine too joined the fray, growling and preparing to fire another round at him. Gorgosaurus knew that this was a fight he could not win. Once again he flees on an empty stomach.
Rebecca sighs, "Better seal of the cave again before those things comes back." She said.
The Grogosaurus returned to the river, hoping to at the very least get something to drink. But then he saw something horrifying. Another Grogosaurus, drinking from his part of the river. He roared at the intruder. But this Gorgosaurus was in good health. He roared back at the wounded Gorgosaurus. This became a display of intimidation, to see who would make the first move. Our Gorgosaurus didn't have the strength to fight back. To his frustration, he is forced to retreat. The other Gorgosaurus roars triumphantly and marks his new territory. Today has been a horrible day. First he is denied his food, then he sustains more injuries and now he has lost his hunting ground, which he's guarded for over a decade.
A few more weeks passes. The village close to the valley has been abandoned, most likely due to food and water running low. All that remains of the river is now a thin stream and a few puddles here and there. A large gathering of Coelophysis were doing what they could to survive, but things had gotten so desperate that they resorted to cannibalism, eating their young.
Further away, roars of agony were heard, which attracted several Coelophysis. It was the male Gorgosaurus. He had collapsed from hunger and dehydration. The flock gathered around him. Even though he was at a weakened state, his jaws could still rend these small sprinters to shred. But the Coelophysis were patient. They waited as the massive carnivore's strength failed him. His head slowly dropped. His eyes half opened. The small predators approached carefully. His eyelids then slowly closed for the last time.
The apex predator of this valley was now just food to these tiny reptiles. They swarmed his body, piercing his thick scales, tearing flesh out of him. Some ripped his eyes out. Pretty soon, every Coelophysis in the valley gathered here.
Another few weeks passed, and the Gorgosaurus had been reduced to a skeleton. The forest was pretty much the same. Water had all but dried up entirely. The Styracosaurus herd is forced to migrate in search for water.
Our duo have been forced to do the same. Rebecca and Arcanine traveled the desert, thirsty like crazy. But then Rebecca's legs gave up on her. Arcanine went over to her, whimpering with worry as he pushed her with his nose for any life signs. Rebecca stirred a little, and Arcanine looked around him. He saw a rock wall which offered a lot of shade. He picked Rebecca up with his mouth and carried her over there. He put her down and licked her cheek. But his tongue was so dry it hardly did anything. The pinkette opened her eyes a little and looked up at her companion.
"You'll be better of leaving me," She said. But Arcanine was having none of it. He lay down and nuzzled up to her. She used whatever strength she had to hug him. If she wasn't so dehydrated, she would be crying right now. "I'm glad you won't leave me," She admits. Arcanine whimpers some more and close his eyes. He is contempt to die here with her.
None of them seem to have noticed the grey clouds in the distance …
CARACK!
The sound of thunder woke the pair up with a start. Rebecca crawled out from under the rock and looked up into the sky. Arcanine stood beside her. She then felt something hit her cheek. A water drop. More drops came down, few at first, and then they increased, coming faster and faster, until water was practically pounding their hot bodies. Rebecca couldn't keep herself from smiling. She opened her mouth and let the rain water moist her dry throat. Arcanine did the same.
They made it through nine months of drought. A rare occurrence for a drought to go on that long. But against all odds they made it.
The next day, the rain was still going on. But Rebecca had regained enough strength to be able to walk on her own. She stood over a small waterfall with her mouth opened. Arcanine was taking cover under a rock. Even though he needs water, as a firry creature, he's not THAT fond of water.
He did not expect Rebecca to tackle him though when she returned. She rolled him over and began scratching his belly, making him kick his left leg. But then he turned on her, wrestling her to the ground and began licking her face as he laid on her.
"Okay! Okay!" She said through laughter as she tried pushing him away. "I give," She said and crawled out from under him. "I'm just so happy." She said as tears welled up in her eyes. "I thought for sure we were going to die," She said as tears streamed down her face. But they were tears of joy. Arcanine nuzzled her face.
GROWL!
Both their stomachs sounded of at the same time. They both looked down at their bellies in embarrassment, and then Rebecca smiled and grabbed her spear. "You can stay here. I know how much you hate going out in the rain. Hopefully I'll find something." She said and went outside.
However, as she was walking through the now muddy field, even though the rain was causing so much noise, she still noticed something behind her. She turned around and to her surprise, Arcanine had followed. She was shocked that he had left the safety of the rock. But smiled, because this told her that regardless of what they go through, he will be by her side no matter what.
She mounted him and he jumped into the air, howling, while Rebecca held her spear up high and a lightning bolt struck in the background. Now that should be a poster.
River of Snakes
Summary: Rebecca and Arcanine have survived the longest drought in hundreds of years. But now that the monsoon season has started, they will have to deal with the dangers that come with it.
Arcanine was gnawing and biting at the skin beneath his fur, as well as trying to scratch himself.
"Hold still," Rebecca told him. "I can't pick these flees if you keep squirming like this," She said as she picked Arcanine's fur clean from flees. "Now I know how my mother felt when she was bathing me as a child." She commented with a smile. She plucked one flee … and then ate it. "You are kinda like a puppy the way you squirm when I have to pick these flees," She said jokingly. Arcanine brushed her face with his tail for that one. Rebecca spat out some hair and went back to picking flees. "Taking a joke is something you can't either."
It's been raining for over a month now. The monsoon season was mercilessly pouring on. Since the drought had lasted longer this year, the ground was extra hard, causing more flooding than usual. Luckily, the duo had found a nice spot on the high ground, safe from the rain. However, now that the rain was back, the insects had returned in swarms. And they had been drawn to Arcanine like a magnet. Luckily for him, his human companion with exposable thumbs could easily pick him clean.
"Oh, that's a big one." The pinkette said, looking over the next flee. "This is the king of the fur kingdom." She joked before eating. "If anything, I get a hefty meal out of this work." She said as she dug through his fur. "Is there anywhere else where it itches?" She asked. Arcanine rolled over on his back and spread his back legs. Rebecca's eyes widen in horror as she knew exactly where he was referring to. "Oh, you've gotta be kidding me." She said in disgust.
Later, Rebecca had rushed outside to wash her hands in the ever growing river. "That was one flee I refused to eat." She said to herself. She looked back to the cave and saw Arcanine laying at the entrance. "You're lucky I'm willing to make such sacrifices for you!" She shouted, and Arcanine gave her puppy eyes.
Rebecca rolled her eyes and was about to stand up. But then something jumped out of the water. A massive blue amphibian like creature. It was a Swampert. A 500 kilo predator. And it had chosen Rebecca as its latest meal. Rebecca jumped out of the way, but the Swampert had hands, with which it grabbed her ankle and pulled. Rebecca had tried to grab her spear but the Swampert had caught her too quickly. She tried kicking it in the face, but that only made it angry. It grabbed both her ankles and was about to take a bit of her leg, when suddenly Arcanine jump it, biting its neck. It was forced to let go as it struggled with Arcanine, allowing Rebecca to get her spear.
Normally, Arcanine can put up a fight. But the rain was weakening him. Not to mention a Swampert's hide is tough. It managed to pry itself free and pushed Arcanine of off it. It then sprayed water from its mouth onto Arcanine, sending him into the mountain wall. The Swampert kept up the pressure, spraying water at Arcanine, keeping him in place. The Swampert was gonna keep doing this until its water had tore the flesh from Arcanine's body. But then a spear tip pierced through its chest. It had underestimated Rebecca, who snuck up behind it and thrusted her spear through it. The water beast fell to its death, allowing Arcanine to drop.
Rebecca rushed over to Arcanine with concern, "Are you hurt boy?" She asked. He licked her face. "Does one lick mean no and two licks mean yes?" She asked with a dry expression. She received two licks in response. "Figures."
After getting the Swampert into the cave, Rebecca went over to a pile of wood she had gathered several days ago. Rebecca would gather wood from the jungle and then have Arcanine dry them up so they would be flammable. Arcanine was fine with eating the meat from the Swampert raw, but Rebecca always preferred her meat cooked. And the Swampert proved to have some delicious fats which make the meat tenderer.
Later that night, as the two slept, the rain poured on violently. The water levels in the river were rising rapidly. It was near dawn when water began pouring into the cave. Rebecca started stirring in her sleep when she felt to water on the backside. It was cold. Eventually, she did wake up, and realized that there was now a puddle inside the cave. She rose up with a start and looked around her. She groaned and went over to Arcanine.
"Wake up, boy." She said, but he just growled in annoyance. She so shook him some more. "Wake up. We cannot stay here." She said. Arcanine woke up with a start. He bit Rebecca's bikini bottoms at the front and held he up, growing at her. "I know you don't like rude awakenings," She said, grunting through the pain between her legs. "But look," She said, pointing at the floor. Arcanine looked down and realized what she was trying to tell him. "We better leave." She advised.
The two wandered through the jungle early in the morning. The rain pouring down hard. But the leaves had returned to the trees, providing some cover. Which was just fine by Arcanine. They tried hiking further up the mountain, in hopes of finding another cave where they could wait out the monsoon.
They found themselves walking on a road alongside the mountain wall. But the rain poured down so hard, the muddy road gave way and Rebecca nearly fell, had not Arcanine grabbed her by her bottoms. But then the ground gave wave for him as well. He jumped with Rebecca still dangling from his mouth, leaping to one rock after another until he reach solid ground on the other side.
Arcanine put her down and she sighed with relief. "Close one," She said.
As if fate had heard her, the ground gave way for the both of them and they both slide down the muddy mountain. They got separated. Rebecca dropped her spear and she slid down with a lot of speed. She tried slowing herself down using her feet and arms. It did slow her down a little bit. But she fell over the edge, with was a steep long fall down to the river. Luckily, her bottoms got caught on a tree branch that was sticking out from the side of the mountain.
She looked up at her bottoms, clinging onto the branch and smiled. "My bottoms sure are a trusted friend." She said. But then a huge creature jumped out of the water. It was a huge 9 tons Deinosuchus. A 12 meter (39 ft) long crocodile. It jumped out of the water towards Rebecca who screamed in horror at it leaped at her. But she was too high up. Its massive mouth full of teeth missed her by a few feet. It tried a few times more to get Rebecca, but she was too high up. Eventually it looked like it gave up.
"I'm safe," She said with a relief. Her moment of relief disappeared when she felt the branch gave way, followed by a cracking sound. "Oh, come on!" She whined. She looked down at the Deinosuchus. It realized the branch was giving into her weight. It opened its mouth, ready to catch her. Rebecca stayed absolutely still, hoping a miracle would happen. She then heard a bark above. She looked up and saw Arcanine, with her spear in his mouth. "Good boy," She said, and Arcanine dropped the spear to her. And not a moment too soon. Because the branch broke. She grabbed the spear and fell into the Deinosuchus's mouth. It bit down with all its might, which resulted in it getting pierced through the head. It fell into the water, dead, and moments later, Rebecca resurfaced, coughing out water. She swum to the nearest shore, where Arcanine rejoined her.
"Well done, boy." She complimented, earning a smile from the canine.
Their victory was short lived however, when they heard hissing. They slowly turned their heads and saw thousands of snakes by the jungle floor. The two started to slowly back away, before turning around and ran for dear life. But then they heard something even worse than snakes. They turned around and saw a massive wave coming at them. The monsoon has really done its work. They picked up pace. Arcanine picked up Rebecca and tossed her onto his back. He is normally a fast sprinter. But the water has made him weak. The flood caught up to them, washing them away.
Lightning revealed in the dark water, that they were surrounded by the snakes. Rebecca looked around her and narrowly dodged getting bitten by snakes. Arcanine was larger and was having a hard time avoided the snakes. He bit one of them in half, but then gets bitten on the back by three.
Rebecca swum to the surface for air, not seeing the large dark figure in the depts. She gasped when she reached the surface, coughing again. But then something familiar emerged. It was another Titanoboa. She narrowly avoided getting eaten as she dove under again. The massive snake surrounded Rebecca with its coils. But then Arcanine returned, biting the scaly beast by its neck. Rebecca resurfaced again, when she noticed that the currents were picking up. She looked behind and became mortified. They were heading towards a waterfall. Suddenly, the Titanoboa's head emerged, startling her. But she realized it had been decapitated. Arcanine emerged as well, and winced when he saw the waterfall. Rebecca felt the snake's dead body against her back. She grabbed hold of it.
"Hold onto this, boy!" She shouted and Arcanine bit onto the tail.
When they reached edge of the fall, they were caught between a rock, while holding onto the snake body. However, Arcanine was much heavier than Rebecca, so he fell, while Rebecca was pulled with him. But she was able to press her back against the wall while holding onto the snake for dear life, desperately trying to save Arcanine. However, the slimy creature began sliding of off Rebecca's grasp. She lost hold and they both fell down the waterfall.
And just as they disappeared beneath the fog, the rain finally stopped.
Cliffhanger. Only, they already fell of the cliff, so … not so much a cliffhanger … (Gunshot sound effect) OW! Real mature! At any case, I hope you liked this. Don't forget to leave a review.
