All the air had been sucked out of the room. Spencer was still rocking in his curled up turtle position sobbing, while the others tried to take in what he had just said.
"Spencer," Emily said as she hesitantly placed her hand on his back again. "Look at me."
Spencer shook his head no.
"Spencer, please, tell me what's going on," she pleaded as her hand rubbed his back soothingly.
He continued to rock a few more moments before he lifted himself up to look at her. Behind the haze of his drug-induced hang over, she could see terror and pain in his eyes. Emily scooted closer and grabbed Spencer's hands in her own.
"What is she doing to you?" she said as her voice cracked with emotion.
Spencer sniffled as he scrunched his nose. His hand shaking as he held tightly to Emily's.
"I'm in trouble," he huffed out as he broke down again.
Emily leaned forward to wrap him in a hug.
"Let us help you, please," Emily said holding him tightly. "You aren't alone this time."
Spencer pulled back, his body stiffening. His face hardened as though she said something offensive.
"Spencer, please. Don't push us away."
"You can't help. No one can," he insisted.
"Lacy is threatening to kill the baby?" Derek said as he bent down to their level. "How can we not help you with that?"
Spencer looked to Derek before shaking his head and getting up on his feet.
"No, no. This was a mistake. I have to go. I need to get out of here," Spencer said anxiously.
Emily stepped forward and placed her hands on his stubbled cheeks. His shifting eyes stopped on hers.
"Do you trust me," she said barely above a whisper.
Spencer stared into her eyes as she held his gaze. After a moment, she felt his head give the slightest of nods. Emily let go of his face, took one of his hands and led him off to the guest room he had just come from. Once inside she shut the door and locked it.
"Now it's just you and me," she said as she turned to stand in front of him.
He nodded as he watched her cautiously. She held out her hands again and he hesitantly placed them back in hers. She tilted her head as she waited patiently for him to open up to her.
"Emily …" he began. "I'm … sorry for everything … everything I put you through."
She shook her head.
"I don't want an apology, Spencer. I want to know what is going on and how I can help you," she said. "I can't let you … suffer like this. Please. Tell me what's wrong."
His nose twitched and his lip trembled as he dropped his head. Emily let go of his one hand and used her finger to lift his gaze back to hers. He could see the worry in her eyes.
"I tried to break up with her. I told her I was done. I didn't want to do this anymore," he said emotionally. "She told me I couldn't leave her. Emily …"
Tears slid down his cheek as he tried to calm himself down enough to speak. He felt Emily's thumb brushing away a tear. How she could be so kind to him, even after all he'd done to her, was beyond him.
"She said she'd kill my son," he whimpered, "if I leave her. She is in complete control of my life now and there's nothing I can do about it … Oh, God! Oh, God, no!"
He, suddenly, went into a full-blown panic attack. His hands shot to his face where he clutched the tips of his hair, practically pulling them. Emily tried to calm him down.
"I quit work! I quit! She said … oh, God, I just … I just killed my son," he cried.
"Stop it! Spencer, stop!" Emily said as she grabbed at his arms, trying to wrestle him from injuring himself.
"Emily, I killed my son!" he shouted as tears streamed from his eyes.
"You did not! Your son will be fine! Everything is going to be ok!" she said desperately trying to ease his fears. "Spencer, listen to me! Listen!"
She got his attention on the last shout. He looked at her like a puppy who had been beaten and abandoned by its owner.
"You still have your job. Hotch never turned in your papers. Calm down," she assured him. "I know it seems hopeless right now, but we are going to get you out of this. You and your son."
"You can't …" he said in a voice barely audible.
"You said you trust me, right?" she said grabbing his face in her hands again.
He nodded.
"I won't let her hurt you or your son. I swear to you," she said with such conviction that he practically collapsed against her.
Emily held him tightly as he let out whatever tears he had left. After some time, she directed him back to the bed. He opened his mouth to protest.
"No," she said holding up a hand to stop him. "You need to rest. Tell Lacy you're on a case. She doesn't need to know the truth."
He sighed and nodded in defeat. He didn't have any strength left to argue further. He climbed on the bed and when Emily went to step away, he grabbed her arm stopping her.
"I know I have no right to ask this," he said softly. "But can you stay with me. Please."
Emily gave him a small smile.
"I'll be back. I have to talk to the others," she said.
He frowned but nodded. She stepped forward and ran a hand along his cheek.
"I promise," she said sincerely.
Once he was settled under the covers, she left the room, closing the door behind her again for his privacy. He didn't need visitors. She walked into the living room and everyone immediately stood up, staring at her expectantly.
"We have a lot of work to do. We need to take this bitch down," she said.
