(A/N: If you've been to my profile lately then you'll notice I took down the poll and that's because it's no longer needed. If you don't like the dragon Helene gets, I can't do anything about it, no one took it seriously, so blame the less than ten people who actually voted, I said I check it periodically.
Anyway, I hope everyone is okay with the choice of dragon I'm giving her, I can't change a thing if you're not happy with it. Yes, I do miss Smog and his family a lot, but everyone has to move on.)
O-I-O-*-V~Y~V-*-O-I-O
It's been just a little over three weeks since Helene lost her three dragons and she was yet to find another one. She had just a little more than a week left before her father would be arriving back at Berk for her, which was something that's been in the back of her mind since the beginning.
Although, in all honesty, she wasn't sure if she wanted another dragon so soon after one of her friends left; no, all three of them were her friends, her closest friends. No one could ever replace Smog or Twirl or Smokey, no matter what.
There had been days where she couldn't bring herself to go to the Academy to see her friends. Seeing all of them with their dragons while she was alone did nothing but make her heart ache. She felt like she could have broken into tears at any second.
Her friends have been supportive of her, comforting her when she needs it. They tried to help her out by introducing her to other dragons to choose from, they showed her the species of each of their dragons, excluding Toothless, as well as a Timberjack, a Boneknapper, a Thunderdrum, and even a Typhoomerang. However, none of them could ever be good enough to replace Smog.
She was glad they were doing this for her, but she knew that they didn't know what she was going through. They had no idea what it was like to lose their dragons and just how difficult it was to grip mentally and emotionally, and the thing was that they probably never would, not now at least.
There were times where she would look at herself in her own reflection and see the earrings made for her. They were supposed to make her feel some form of contentment, but they just made her very melancholy. She loved the gift, but they made her feel eternal sadness because they were made by her beloved dragons.
With no success in finding a dragon she might like and her sorrow, it was beginning to appear as if she would never be able to find a dragon before her deadline was up. She was beginning to lose hope, and the thought of her father taking her away may soon become an unfortunate reality.
Everyone was in the Academy one afternoon while Hiccup discussed the Screaming Death. It hadn't been seen since it tore apart Berk along with its siblings, but that didn't mean it wasn't still out there somewhere. A dragon as large as it was could cause massive destruction to humans and dragons alike.
"The Screaming Death's spines are much like that of a Deadly Nadder and could travel as far, if not farther," Hiccup explained, using a piece of charcoal to write on a stone slab. "So, if caught in that situation, we should…?"
"Use Ruff as a shield?" Tuffnut guessed, snickering.
"Use Tuffnut as a shield?" Ruffnut echoed her brother's response.
Astrid shook her head, "We should try to fly low, since Deadly Nadders tend to fire straight out or up, it can be assumed the Screaming Death might have the same tendency."
"That's not a bad theory, Astrid," Fishlegs replied.
"Except there's no way to test it unless it's out in the field," Snotlout remarked, somewhat sarcastically.
"So, what's the plan today, Hiccup?" Helene asked. "Screaming Death patrol?"
"No," he answered, "that'll be another day. Today, we'll be exploring the shoreline of the island. Because of the size of the Screaming Death, an attack from directly above is unlikely, if it has the mindset of a Whispering Death, it's going to be coming from below, and the only way to do that is to come onto the island through the coast."
He got a map of the island from Toothless' saddlebag and spread it out over a table. He used the charcoal he used on the stone slab to mark where they would be exploring.
"Astrid, you and the twins will be on the north side," he addressed. "Fishlegs, you, Snotlout, Helene, and I will be on the south side."
"Oh… sunny beaches," Snotlout put his arm around Helene. "Romantic, don't you think?" Stormfly saved her by firing spines at him, pinning him to the nearby wall. "Okay! Okay. I'm coming. Help me down, Hookfang?" The said dragon only huffed and laid his head down.
"Toothless," Hiccup addressed his dragon in a slightly deadpan voice. Toothless got the message and shot a plasma blast at him, getting him down from the wall.
Helene walked behind Astrid, secretly slipping a gold coin into her hand with a smirk that no one could see, Astrid also smirked and wore hers openly. She went over to Toothless and sat on his saddle.
"Okay, gang, let's saddle up and get started on this assignment," he proclaimed.
The riders got onto their dragons for this new mission that was more or less just a training exercise realistically. What were the chances they would encounter the Screaming Death, or any dragon for that matter? It should be a slim probability, but anything was possible.
They took to the air and separated into their groups for the assignment. Not surprisingly, the twins and Snotlout started running their mouths, annoying their respective teams, this was going to be a long day. A very long day.
Hiccup, Fishlegs, Snotlout and Fishlegs had been patrolling the southern shoreline of the island for nearly an hour by this time. They were nearing an area of Berk known as Black Heart Bay.
Black Heart Bay was an unique area, it was a combination of a number of sea stacks, vast beaches, arches, and ridges. The arches and ridges were rocky and almost looked like they were made of the bones of a colossal dragon. The beaches were not in the same area, instead they were scattered around the entire section of the island. This area also had the largest amount of sea stacks on the south coast, if not the whole island.
Needless to say, if there was any area of the island that could provide the perfect opportunity to hide a large dragon, this would be it. It could also make for a decent obstacle course, which made them glad Astrid was on the other side of the island, otherwise they would already be doing laps.
"Why don't we ever come to this place?" Snotlout asked nobody in particular. "This is amazing! We come here more often."
"Wow. Never knew Snotlout was a nature person," Hiccup muttered to Helene, who smiled.
"Actually, we really should keep an eye on this area," Fishlegs claimed. "This is a large area with plenty of places to hide, it's realistically the best place for the Screaming Death to come in for an attack on Berk if it doesn't want to be seen."
"Good point, Fishlegs," Hiccup replied. "What do you say? Should we go check it-"
He was cut off by a weird sound coming from one of the beaches below. It sounded similar to the dragon call Ruffnut and Tuffnut used for Barf and Belch, yet this one sounded a bit more gravelly, as if it was originating from somewhere in the water.
"Um… what was that?" Fishlegs squeaked.
"That sounds like a dragon," Hiccup's eyes were slightly wide yet his eyebrows were furrowed.
"Doesn't sound like any dragon I've ever heard," Snotlout remarked.
"We should investigate, it could be in trouble," Helene told Hiccup.
He nodded, "Alright. Take us down, bud." Toothless warbled and began to descend.
"Whoa! Whoa! We don't just go towards the strange sounds!" Fishlegs shrieked.
"Sure we do, we always do it," Snotlout casually replied. He dived down after them.
"I hate that we do that," he mumbled as he and Meatlug followed them.
As they neared the beach, Toothless halted in mid-air and the other dragons did the same when they saw where the sound was coming from. It was coming from a dragon, but this dragon was nothing they had ever seen before.
It was various shades of purple with dark blue highlights on its wings and a dorsal fin along with a row of smaller fins that extended down its entire back that were light blue in color with a slight turquoise tint. When it raised its head to let out another distress call, they could see it had a prominent lower jaw with tendrils dangling from it.
"What is that?" Helene asked.
"I don't know," Hiccup responded, "I don't recognize it, but it looks like a Tidal Class dragon if you ask me."
"Well, then let's stop talking and take a closer look at it," Snotlout interjected.
"Snotlout!" Hiccup tried to stop him, but it was too late.
The dragon saw him and Hookfang and fired at them. However, it didn't shoot fire at them, instead an electricity sparked from its tendrils and a stream of purple electricity came from the mouth, electrocuting them.
Snotlout blathered as he and Hookfang seized from the attack before he could talk normally, "What the hell was that?!"
"Fishlegs?" Helene looked over at him.
He was looking through the book of dragons, "I'm on it!" He looked through every single page before he finally found the right one, "Here it is, it's called a Shockjaw."
"What does the book say about it?" Hiccup asked.
"It says it's one of the fastest known Tidal Class dragons, second only to a select few," he explained. "Unlike most Tidal Class dragons, it's capable of transitioning from the sea to the air with no problems at all and the speeds it can reach is said to rival that of a Night Fury. The electricity it fires differs from Skrills and it's strong enough to tear a boat in half. Because of its dominance in the sea and in the air, the Shockjaw has no known weaknesses."
Hiccup whistled, "I have to admit, that's one powerful dragon."
"Question is, what's it doing here?" Helene inquired.
They watched as it continued to let out distress calls and thrash on the beach and that's when they saw what was wrong with it. It was caught in an old netter trap, specifically the wings were tangled up in it, preventing it from flying or swimming.
"Look! Its wings are tangled," Hiccup noted.
Helene put a hand on his shoulder, "Hiccup, we have to help it."
"I know," he replied, "but this is a dragon that could rival even that of Toothless. We need to figure out a way to help it without endangering ourselves or the dragons."
"Maybe if we go down there one at a time it might be more willing to trust us," Fishlegs suggested.
"So, who's gonna be first?" Snotlout asked. "'Cause sure as hell it won't be me."
"I'll do it," she uttered. "I'll go down there."
Hiccup gasped and looked back at her, "Helene, you can't!"
She crossed her arms, "And why not?"
He struggled to come up with a reason, "Well, um-"
"You don't have a dragon!" Snotlout gibed.
"Snotlout!" Hiccup yelled.
She placed her hand on his shoulder again to stop him, "No, Hiccup, it's fine. Sometimes I do forget I don't have a dragon anymore, but that doesn't mean I can't still try. Please, just give me a chance. If I fail, pull me out of there."
He was astonished by her words, they were just so empathic and determined that even he could sympathize with them, even though he still had Toothless. He sighed, "Fine, I'll give you a chance."
He took her to an area of the beach that obscured the sightline of the Shockjaw. Toothless hovered over the sand, just low enough so that she could get down safely. She jumped down and motioned for them to fly up, and they did so, albeit reluctantly.
"Just be very careful," he cautioned.
She smiled up at them, "I'll be alright."
She took light steps as she began to walk towards the dragon in the sand. Her steps were surprisingly quiet, even though she was walking on sand, but she would still have to be very careful, most dragons have a very good sense of hearing.
She came to stop behind a large rock and peered out to watch the Shockjaw for a moment. She wanted to see if it could sense her presence, now that she was closer to it. It appeared to be able to detect something, but it didn't appear to know what it could be. She wondered if that meant it had no previous interaction with humans, which she knew could either help her or hinder her.
After another moment or two, she began to come out from behind the rock, once again taking light steps as she did so. As she started to make her way closer to the dragon, she accidentally stepped on a piece of driftwood and it snapped under her shoe.
The snap got the immediate attention of the Shockjaw, who roared at her with a roar that sounded similar to a Scauldron. Its tendrils sparked and electricity was fired at her, she quickly went back behind the rock to defend herself.
"Helene!" Hiccup cried. He and Toothless began to fly down to get her away from the Shockjaw, but she waved them away.
"No, Hiccup, no!" she yelled up at him while waving her arm. They halted and listened to what she had to say, "I'm alright. And I'm not pulling out yet."
"Helene-" he attempted to argue.
"I promise, I'm alright and I'll be okay," she assured.
Reluctantly, he pulled on Toothless' saddle, telling him to retreat upwards. They rejoined with Snotlout and Fishlegs and all three - or rather all six - watched on nervously.
As she remained behind the protection of the rock, she started thinking about how she would be able to get the trust of the dragon. She knew how to train every class of dragon, the Mystery Class being the one she knew the most, but neither her nor any of the Dragon Riders had much experience with Tidal Class dragons. The one who would know the most was Stoick, but he wasn't there, he was back in the village.
Smog was easy to train because he was young and very curious when they first met, Twirl was easy to train as well, Terrible Terrors were the kind of dragon that a brainless person could train, and Smokey was so quickly trained because he was just a baby, she was the first human he had ever seen. The only other dragons that she trained - or at least had the trust of - were the Monstrous Nightmare from Outcast Island and the Changewing from Dragon Island.
Then, she remembered that she was able to train Smog and the Changewing by appealing to their curiosity. With the Monstrous Nightmare she sang to it, which relaxed him enough to allow her onto his back. Perhaps by using a combination of these training strategies she could potentially gain the trust of this dragon.
She began to dig in the sand to search for something to feed to the Shockjaw. Food had also played a part in training her dragons, anything she could find would be perfect for a backup plan if her training strategy doesn't work.
She found a small clam a few inches in the sand, she used a rock and a stick to loosen the shell so that it would be easier to use later. Next, she used a piece of twine to tie around the rock she was using. Now, she felt she was set and ready, it wasn't much but hopefully it was enough.
The Shockjaw was staring and growling at the rock she was hiding behind, ready for anything. It roared when she stepped out into the open and prepared to fire at her, but then stopped when it saw her swinging a rock by a thread, almost in a hypnotic fashion.
"What is she doing?" Snotlout questioned.
Fishlegs seemed to have an idea of what she might be attempting, "Uh, Hiccup, is she…?"
He smiled, "Yes, Fishlegs, I think she is."
She took cautious steps forward as she distracted it with the rock. She made it spin by twirling the twins, she did so to keep it intrigued. If it got bored with her, only Thor knows what would happen to her next.
The steps she took towards this dragon were small and slow, but in time she was eventually able to walk up to the Shockjaw. By the time it realized she was standing right in front of it, it roared at her. It opened its mouth, but then paused when she opened hers and began to sing.
"Slowly fading away
You're lost and so afraid
Where is the hope in a world so cold?
Looking for a distant light
Someone who can save a life
Living in fear that no one will hear your cry
I am with you
I will carry you through it all
I won't leave you, I will catch you
When you feel like letting go
'Cause you're not…
You're not alone
The dragon's eyes became soft and accepting of her and her presence. She reached her hand out and waited patiently for something to happen, she closed her eyes and opened them when she felt the Shockjaw bring its snout to her palm. She peeled off the shell of the clam and let the meat of it spill into its open mouth. It ate it gratefully and nudged her thankfully for the snack.
She smiled, "You're welcome…" she looked over the dragon, "...girl."
The Shockjaw, as it turned out, was a female, which might have been why she was able to trust her enough to come to her. As for why she was so aggressive, it may just be the natural behavior for her species, or she could simply be stressed.
She looked up at her friends and gestured for them to come down to the beach. They flew down and landed on the sand, getting down from their dragons, she made sure to have her hands on the dragon to keep her calm.
Hiccup grinned, "You did it, Helene! You did it!"
She smiled back, "It's all thanks to all of you, for teaching me how to train dragons."
"But especially me!" Snotlout chimed in. "The Snotman is the best dragon trainer ever!"
The Shockjaw growled at him and her tendrils sparked again, she opened her mouth and a small bolt came out of it and struck Snotlout. It was only a slight jolt and all that happened was a small seizure before he was back to normal.
"Yeah, obviously, the best ever," Fishlegs deadpanned.
"Shut up, Fish-face!" he grumbled.
"Okay." Hiccup decided to get back on topic, "We need to get this net off her wings."
He tried to get close to her, but she roared at him and her eyes were suddenly hostile. She fired a single stream of electricity in his direction, but Toothless was able to protect him and roared at her.
Hiccup held back his dragon, "Whoa! Easy, bud. Easy, Toothless."
"It looks like she only trusts Helene, she won't let us get too close to her," Fishlegs uttered.
"So, what you're saying is we did all this for nothing!" Snotlout groaned.
"What do you mean 'we'?" Helene questioned, her hands were on the dragon's snout to hold her back. "I did all the work, you got yourself electrocuted, again."
"Shut up, Helene," he grumbled again.
Hiccup realized something, it was something she said, "Wait, wait, she's right! Helene, the Shockjaw trusts you because only you were the one on the beach, the rest of us weren't."
"What are you saying?" she asked, her eyes becoming wide.
"I'm saying you have to free her from the trap," he declared.
'I was afraid he was going to say that,' she thought.
It wasn't as if she was afraid she would be electrocuted, whether it was purposefully or accidentally, no, that wasn't why. She was honestly afraid of the thought of getting onto a dragon on her own.
She might have done so a number of times, but it was always with one of her friends with her. There were only two times where that wasn't the case. One was when they were flying away from Outcast Island after she was there while undercover, the other was after they saved Hiccup from Alvin, even then all of her friends were there with her in the air.
That wouldn't be the case here, she had to get on to her back and free her wings from the metal net. And if she decided to fly off while she was still on her, there was nothing she could do about it.
While she may have much to lose, this dragon still needed her help. She would most likely not survive otherwise.
Carefully, she stepped on a rock large enough to be held in two hands but still rather small and used it to support herself as she climbed onto the Shockjaw. She got onto her back and she immediately tensed up, she's never had people on her before, it probably feels strange to her.
"Helene," Hiccup called out to her, throwing her a canteen, which she caught.
Fishlegs realized what he was doing, "Good thinking, Hiccup. As a Tidal Class dragon, a little water should be enough to calm her down."
She pulled out the top of the canteen with a sound similar to a pop. She poured the water onto the Shockjaw's dry, scaly body, rubbing it into the skin with her free hand. The dragon purred slightly as she felt her palm and fingers dance on her hide.
With the Shockjaw now calm, she got to work on relieving her of the net. She threw the canteen into the sand so that she would have two hands to work with as she did this.
She gripped the net and one hand had to immediately let go of it, the metal used to make it must have been jagged because she cut herself as soon as she touched it. It was only a small cut, it probably wouldn't even scar, she shrugged it off and went back to working on the net.
However, because of the sharp metal, she would have to be extremely careful while handling it. Any mishaps would result in one or both of them getting injured.
As she brushed away a section of the trap, she noticed an area that was slightly knotted. That made things all the more dangerous, if she messed up this Shockjaw would become the same as Toothless, not to mention that she could become similar to Hiccup.
The dragon whined as she tried to remove it. "I know, it's not the best feeling, but you have to work with me here." She complied with her by remaining quiet so that she could focus.
Eventually, she found where it was tangled and started to unknot it. It was somewhat painful under the tips of her fingers, and an awkward and sharp feeling for the dragon, but she was able to loosen it and removed it from her wing.
Fortunately, that one knot she found was the only one, besides it her wings had simply gotten wrapped in the net. She figured it most likely tangled and wrapped up her wings when she tried to throw it off, probably by flapping them.
She threw off the net onto the beach, the Shockjaw was now free. She had a couple of small cuts and knicks, but nothing too deep or too serious, she should be able to swim and fly without a problem.
She jumped off the dragon and she spread her wings, lowering them slightly so that she could look at them. They were fine, the net was completely gone! She nudged her again, pressing the side of her face and head into the side of her face and neck, purring slightly as she did so.
She smiled and laughed, "You're welcome. You sure are happy."
She moved away from her, going towards the ocean, looking out at the horizon. She spread out her wings and roared, but did not fly away. Instead, she looked back at Helene and looked out to the water, as if she was inviting her to go with her.
She frowned, "I'm sorry, I can't go with you. I have to stay here."
She lowered her wings and went back to her, rubbing her waist and hips. She moved her hand to the other side of her head, they looked directly into each other's eyes. The way she looked at her was similar to the way Smog did when they first met.
"I think she wants to stay with you," Hiccup smiled.
She smiled at the Shockjaw, who also gave her own version of a smile. While she still wasn't entirely sure if she was ready for another dragon, she did know one thing, this dragon was fond of her and the feeling was mutual.
"So, uh, what do you say, Helene?" Hiccup asked, a little nervous. "Do you think you're ready? Do you want another dragon?"
After what seemed like an eternity, she nodded, "Yes, I think- no, I am ready."
He smiled at her again, he was proud of her for saying that. He knew she went through a lot recently and the courage she had was certainly something to admire.
"Hiccup! Helene!" They heard Astrid's voice call out to them as she and the twins flew overhead. "Fishlegs! Snotlout!"
"We're down here, Astrid!" Hiccup called back.
She heard him and they flew down to where they were on the beach. They made it to them and landed on the sand, immediately noticing the Shockjaw next to Helene.
"Uh… who's this?" she questioned, slightly wary of the new dragon.
"Well, uh, this is my new dragon," Helene answered with a small smile.
Astrid beamed when she heard her words, "Oh, congratulations, Hele! I'm so happy for you."
She tried to go to her to give her a hug, but her new dragon growled at her. Her pupils were slitted and the tendrils were sparked again.
She put her hand on her nasal horn to hold her back, "It's okay, don't worry. Astrid is a friend, she's not going to hurt you." She was eventually able to calm her down, although she still kept the electricity in her tendrils active. "I'm sorry, she only likes me."
"It's fine, it's fine," she assured. "What kind of dragon is she?"
"And more importantly, why is there lightning on her chin?" Tuffnut asked.
"It's not lightning, Tuff, it's electricity," she replied. "She's a Shockjaw, and her electricity can have the potential to rip a ship in half."
"It's true, says it right here in the book of dragons," Fishlegs held up the book.
"So, how did all… this happen?" Astrid questioned.
"We were flying over the area when we heard a distress call, that's when we saw her, she was caught in a netter trap," Hiccup explained.
"She was shown to be very hostile," Fishlegs began.
"You're telling me," Snotlout chimed in.
"So we decided that only one person should go down to the beach to try and free her," he continued.
"I volunteered and I was able to gain her trust. I freed her from the trap and that's when you showed up," Helene finished.
She blinked, her mouth slightly agape, "Wow. That's…"
"Oddly specific?" Ruffnut guessed.
Helene shrugged, "It's what happened."
Hiccup looked down at their shadows in the sand and then up at the sky. "Hey, we better get back to Berk soon, before my Dad starts to worry."
Helene froze when he said that, that meant she had to mount her new dragon and fly all the way back to the village. While her friends were with her, she was more or less more concerned with how her dragon would react to having a human riding on her back, it may not turn out good for either of them.
The other riders mounted their dragons and she looked at hers to see if she would let her mount her as well. As if reading her mind, she bowed her head, allowing and assuring her that she could do this.
She got onto her back, flatten the fins she sat on. Once the others took to the air, she gently tapped her on the side, pointing up at her friends as they rose higher in the sky.
She got the message and lifted off the ground, flying upward towards the other riders and their dragons. It did feel a little strange to her to have a person on her back, but she was actually quite light, she wouldn't slow her down too much in the future.
"How does it feel?" Hiccup asked as soon as she caught up with them.
"Kind of… surreal," she responded. Then muttered to herself, "If that's a good word to use."
"I'm sure it does, but you'll get used to it," he replied.
As they got closer to the village, they got lower in the altitude. They were so low, in fact, that they were almost level with the waves of the ocean below.
One particularly large wave arose from the water right where Helene and her Shockjaw were flying. She was about to have her brake until it passed, but instead she flew right through the width of the wave as if it wasn't even there!
"Whoa! Did you see that?" Fishlegs excitedly asked.
"Yeah," Hiccup smiled back at them.
"She ripped right through that wave!" he exclaimed.
She patted her on her head with a proud smile. She thought about what Fishlegs said and thought it had a nice ring to it, after realizing that she didn't have a name yet.
"I like that, and I think I have a name in mind for you. How does Ripwave sound?" she asked her. She roared in response, showing how much she liked it. "Ripwave it is, then."
She had a feeling this was the beginning of something amazing. She missed Smog, Twirl, and Smokey, but they moved on and it was time for her to do the same.
O-I-O-*-V~Y~V-*-O-I-O
(A/N: So, how does everyone feel about it? Do you like it? Do you like the dragon I gave Helene? Well, I hope you do because I can't change it, not that I would.
Her training of Ripwave is taken from the episode "Free Scauldy", where Ruffnut tames Scauldy so that they can get him back into the water. The song she sang to her is "Not Alone" by the band Red, which just happens to be a personal favorite from that particular group.
Anyway, the next chapter will take place in the episode "Frozen", and Johann will be there, of course. I personally can't wait to write his reaction to Ripwave. I can't say anymore, so stay safe until next time.)
