I stare up a Calyptus, shocked that she is here. Then she pulls me up, and I finally look down below me. Huge spike sticks out of the ground, and I am glad that she showed up when she did. That would be a painful way to go. Once back on solid ground, I sit down, trying to calm my racing heart. "How are you here?" ask after a few moments of silence.
She looks at me, and I see the sword is still at her side. "How am I here? How are you here?" she askes, "I saw you fall down that mountain. How are you alive."
I let out a breath and pull the quiver off of me, counting the arrows to make sure that I still have them all, "I honestly don't know." I tell her. "I landed in a pile of snow. I guess it somehow cushioned my fall." The question that I desperately want to ask never forms in my mouth. I can't bring myself to ask it.
"That's good!" She says excitedly, and then she notices something, "Where's Monty?"
My blood runs cold, and I fight back the tears, "He, uh, he didn't make it." I say barely above a whisper.
I lift my head up to look at Calyptus and see her lower her head as if she is sad, "I'm sorry." she finally says after a while. "I should have taken him with me. I should have done something, but he wouldn't move." She has tears in her eyes now.
I stand up and look at her, "You tried to get him to come with you?" I asked, hoping that she didn't just leave him to save herself. But if she did then, I can't really be mad with her about that because everyone wants to kill us, and only one gets out alive.
She nods her head as a tear falls down her head, "Yeah, I swear I did. But I didn't get much of a chance to get him because the tributes from 1 started chasing me, and as I was running from my life, I didn't see the anthem that night." She explained.
"Well, I got my revenge," I spoke coldly. "The girl from 2 and both from 4, they are dead."
She looks at me, shocked, "You took out three Careers by yourself?" She seemed like she was impressed.
I nod my head, "Were you following me?" I asked, drifting the conversation away from that day to when she just saved me.
"No, well, I mean not really." She pulled off her bag and handed me her bottle of water, "I just saw you as I was trying to find something to eat."
I smile at her as I take the bottle of water, "Well, you showed up just in time, a few seconds later, and I would be dead."
The calm feeling that was in the air from being with someone that didn't want to kill me was ruined. A cannon sounded through the air. Another was dead. I glance over at Calyptus, and we both share a worried look. We are in the final few, me and her and three others. Only five out of twenty-four of us remain. The odds of survival seem low at this point. The thought of freedom seems so far away.
The sun was beginning to set before we finally decided to move. "Where have you been staying?" I asked. I have just been sleeping on the ground if you call it sleeping. I sleep for like a few minutes, but then I'm up for a few hours. In total, I probably get about an hour of sleep. Maybe now, with someone else, I can finally sleep.
"I've just been climbing trees and sleeping up there," she says. "So, who do you think is left, I mean, I know we will find out in a few hours, but talking helps take my mind off of things."
I stare at her, and I can tell that she is terrified, so am I. "Both from 1, most likely, and us. That's four, so that leaves one more." I think out loud, "So maybe the other person could be the boy from eight."
Calyptus shakes her head, "No, I don't think so. I mean, I agree that the ones from 1 are still around here somewhere and us, of course, but I don't think it's the boy from 8. I think it might be the boy from 6."
We start heading towards the tree that she has been staying at for the last four days. "Why do you say that?"
She shrugs her shoulders, "I don't know, he's the same age as us, and we are still here. Why do you say the boy from 8, he's twelve."
"I don't know, maybe I'm just hoping that someone so young is capable of making it this far," I say, and we both know that I am thinking more about Monty than the boy from 8.
It is quiet for a moment as we approach the tree, then Calyptus turns to me, "Wanna make a bet? I mean, it's kind of morbid, but it honestly helps calm my nerves because as we reach the finale, I am terrified."
I nod my head, "Sure, I got nothing better to do. Okay, so what's the bet."
Calyptus smiles, "Okay, so if the boy from 6 is still alive, then you make a snow angel, and if the boy from 8 is still alive, then I have to make a snowman."
I laugh at that, "It seems like that is just an excuse to play in the snow."
She puts her hand over her heart as if my words just hurt her, "I would never," She laughs, "okay fine, maybe it is, but in my defense, we don't get that much snow in my district."
It was moments like this that makes me happy. I was lucky enough to make a friend in the Games. This was the first time that I've laughed since the Games started, maybe even since the reaping. I am genuinely happy at this moment, my worries have left, but they will be back by morning.
After a few hours of us lying on our backs and staring up at the stars, the anthem starts playing. The girl from 3 is the first to show up, then it is the boy from 8 and finally the girl from 11. I groan, "I guess that means I lost. I'll make a snow angel in the morning." I admit defeat. I know that this is morbid that we are making bets on who is dead, but we are just trying to cope with what is happening. We are both terrified. This is our way of letting our minds think of something else rather than the countless ways we could die tomorrow.
"Yeah, you better, but man, I was really looking forward to building a snowman."
Not long after we both fall asleep, my night is actually pleasant, maybe having someone else around helps keep the nightmares away. But soon, my sleep is interrupted. A loud explosion jolts us both awake. We look at each other, still half asleep. It is still dark out, and the only thing I can see is the white from the snow and a few trees next to us. The moon is hidden behind the clouds. I start to think that it was nothing and try to go back to sleep, but then it sounds again.
Off in the distance where the mountain is, I can see movement. Not a person or an animal, the snow is moving. The Gamemaker's decided to spice things up and throw an avalanche at us. Will we be safe up here in the trees? I turn to Calyptus wanting her opinion on this, but she doesn't know the answer either. Our only options are to get buried on the ground or try to stay above it in the trees. "I think we should stay up here," I speak though my voice doesn't sound confident.
My eyes grow heavy, I'm tired, but I can't sleep. I train my eyes to the oncoming snow, wondering if this is my last few moments. Surely the snow won't reach up this high. Surely we are safe. But still, my heart starts pounding as the snow grows closer, and suddenly panic rises within me.
Minutes pass before it is close enough for us to judge how high it is. From a safe distance, we can see it take down trees along its path. I quickly turn to Calyptus, "We can't stay here. We need to move." I whisper to her, my eyes showing my fear.
"Where do we go? If we go down, we'll be buried, and we can't stay here." She asks, and I can hear the fear in her voice. It was probably in mine as well. I am terrified.
I thought for a moment, looking around for anything that can use to escape safely. Then I saw our only option, it was a risky one, but it was our only one. "Follow me," I say and then stand up on the tree branch and inch my way along it. Nearing the end of it, I turn back and look at Calyptus, "We have to jump from tree to tree."
I look back at the branch in front of me, scared of what will happen if I miss the jump. But I know that I have to, either that or stay here and die. I close my eyes and take in a breath before opening them and jump. I figure it's best just to do it rather than think because if I think, I will talk myself out of it. For a moment, it feels like I'm flying, and then my feet land on the branch but they slip off "Ember!" I hear Calyptus yell as I start falling. I reach my hands out to grab hold of something and grab the branch.
I look up at her and nod my head, "Come on, this is the only way." I tell her once I hoist myself back up to the branch. Once I am standing on my feet again, I reach my hand out for her, hoping that I would be able to catch her if she didn't make it. From behind her, I can see the snow approaching, knocking down trees in its path.
She looks at me, scared, and takes the jump. She jumps perfectly, makes the landing on the branch. She only reaches for my hand to steady herself. I look at her, relieved, and a smile spreads across my face. Then the snow approaches us. The impact of it hitting the tree we are currently standing on knocks us off balance. I scramble to grab hold of the tree branch, but Calyptus doesn't find anything. I quickly reach out with one hand, the other holding the branch, to catch her, but I don't.
Calyptus falls down into the snow leaving an imprint on the snow where she hit. Then the snow stops, and the world goes quiet.
