Chapter 9: The Challenge

Inside Fenton Works.

While Danny was with the few on the roof, Jazz was asking questions to their guests.

"So, your species can only produce females? Interesting…" Jazz wrote.

"Yup, so no brothers." Felicia added.

"Any… cat people you know of?" Tucker asked with an eager expression as he twiddled his fingers.

Sam rolled her eyes.

Felicia put a hand to her chin and pondered.

"Hmm.. Nana and Mimi are a little too young, but-"

That's when the sound of something on the roof caught their attention.

"Do you hear that?" Hsien-Ko asks.

"Sounds like trouble," Felicia said with her pupils turning to slits.

On the rooftop.

"You are going to suffer for that!" Demitri shouted, his cape flaring with the wind.

"Any chance a simple "my bad" will suffice?" Danny asked as he fired at the vampire.

Demitri simply backhanded the attack, sending it back to Danny, who blocked it with a shield.

"No, no it will not." He said as he prepared to make his move.

"Alright then, Count Chocula, let's dance." Danny said before he flew into the air.

Jon and Lilith were about to join when Morrigan suddenly stopped them.

"Wait, I want to see how good he is." she said in a curious tone, though her eyes were serious.

Demitri rushed towards Danny, his nails sharpening. He aimed a few swipes at Danny, who dodged with, getting a few strands of hair cut.

"Woah, someone needs a manicure." Danny said before he threw a kick that Demitri dodges before he spun around, using the momentum to throw another kick, but Demitri caught it.

The vampire spun Danny around before throwing him high into the air. Danny struggled a little to regain his balance before he spun around but saw that Demitri disappeared. He looked around, trying to find the vampire, not noticing the fire bats forming behind him.

Demitri glared at Danny before he raised his arm, a sword made from fire erupted from his hand and he swung at Danny. There was a loud 'clang!' and Demitri saw his sword was blocked by a shield made from ice. Eyes glowing blue, Danny raised his other hand and a sword of ice appeared from his hand, using it to slash at Demitri, who jumped away.

"You wanna sword fight, let's sword fight," Danny said with a grin. "An gourd!"

"It's en garde, you uncivilized brat!" Demitri exclaimed as the two rushed at each other. Their swords met in a flash of sparks. Demitri pulled back and swung again, but Danny blocked it with his shield before he swung his sword at Demitri, who barely dodged before Danny threw a kick that hit Demitri in the stomach, causing him to stumble back a little.

Danny then bashed the shield on Demitri's head, stunning him, before following it with a slash that hit Demitri's chest.

"Aaargh!" Demitri exclaimed as he held the wound before glaring at Danny as the wound slowly closed.

He flew towards Danny and swung his sword, which Danny tried to block with his shield, but the blow blew Danny back a few feet, feeling the impact through his arm. Before he could recover, Demitri grabbed the shield with his bare hand and shattered it, shocking Danny. The halfa quickly threw a slash, but Demitri deflected it with his sword, causing Danny to drop it. Demitri then slashed Danny in the middle, splitting him in half.

He smirked, thinking he finally killed the hybrid annoyance, only for him to be surprised when the split Danny turned into two, who grinned before they started double teaming him, throwing punches and kicks at Demitri, not noticing that the day was slowly turning into night.

"Enough!" Demitri exclaimed, his eyes glowing. He grabbed the duplicate by the throat, turning it to smoke before he grabbed Danny by the shoulders and lifted him to the air. "Time to end this!"

Suddenly, just as he was going to crush Danny, two blurs suddenly rammed onto Demitri, causing him to let Danny go. He looked and saw that it was Felicia and Hsien-Ko that attacked him. The two landed besides the others as Danny landed between them, glaring at the vampire.

"Okay, what happened? Why is Demitri free?" Felicia asked.

"It was the wind blowing that talisman off!" Jon shouted with a snarl directed at Demitri, who landed a few feet in front of them. He then rushed towards the vampire on all fours and Morrigan flew into the air while Lilith went to check on Danny.

''The wind blew it off?" Felicia asked in a deadpanned tone as she turned to Hsien-Ko, who was looking away.

"I told you we should use hot glue..." Hsien-Ko said to her sister, now a talisman on her head, claws protruding from her sleeves.

"And I told you it doesn't work like that." Mei-Ling responded in her mind before they joined the fray.

Jon growled as he kept slashing at Demitri with his claws, but the vampire has become faster. Morrigan concentrated her energy into her fist before throwing it, making a fist-shaped blast towards Demitri, who blocked it. He then grabbed Jon by the throat and threw him to the ground.

"Take him down together!" Morrigan exclaimed, glowing as she prepared to attack. "He can't take all of us at once!"

She fired black projectiles towards Demitri, Mei-Ling released chains, blades, and spiked balls from her sleeves towards Demitri, and Felicia rushed towards him, her claws sharpening. Just as their attacks would reach them, Demitri roared and released a giant wave of dark energy that blocked their attacks and sent them flying off their feet.

''Fools, I am far more powerful without the sun!" Demitri said as he raised his arms, creating a large swarm of fire bats. "If this is the best you can do, I'll just obliterate you right now!"

Danny frowned as he tried to think. Everyone else has been knocked away from the powered-up vampire, and the night is still young.

"Where are wooden stakes and garlic when I need it most? I would love to use those right now." He asked himself.

That's when Danny heard a scream from below. He saw a crowd of people gathered in the streets, all watching the dangerous vampire with the swarm of burning bats.

Where did these people come from out of nowhere? He thought with a raised eyebrow. You'd think after all these times, they'd learn to stay away from the danger.

Demitri saw this and licked his lips, looking at them hungrily, especially the females in the crowd.

"More little pests to kill, and more blood to suck." He said as he prepared to fire the bats at the crowd.

The ghost boy panicked and immediately flew in front of Demitri.

"Wait!" Danny held his hand out, getting Demitri's attention, making the vampire scoff.

"Surrendering already?" He asks with a raised eyebrow.

"Just the opposite." Danny said. "Let's take this somewhere else… where people don't have to get involved."

Demitri heard this and frowned.

"And why should I?" He demanded.

"You wanted a real fight, right?" Danny said, eyes glowing brightly.

"So… you're saying if there were no humans present, you'd be willing to fight me with all you have?" Demitri asks, holding a hand up that was glowing a deadly red.

Danny realized what he was up to.

"NOT LIKE THAT!" He shouted to stop Demitri from wasting the humans. "Look, if you want a proper fight, don't hurt any humans and meet me in an hour in the mountains, then I'll show you a real fight."

Demitri paused and considered it. He looked at the humans before at Danny before the glow in his hand disappeared.

"Very well, Ghost Boy..." Demitri agreed before he floated up. "I'll see you in the mountains. Fail to show up, and I will slaughter every human in this town for my feast."

With a swirl of his cape, Demitri disappeared in a swirl of flames, leaving Danny and the other Darkstalkers alone.

Once they got back up and became aware of his absence, they looked to Danny.

"He left?" Lilith asked, surprised before turning to Danny. "What did you say?"

"I told him I'd fight him for real if there weren't any humans," Danny replied, looking at the directions of the mountains.

"Wait, what do you mean 'fight him for real'?" Hsien-ko asked.

"I'll be using my strongest attack," Danny replied.

"Wait, you have a stronger attack that could take Demitri down?" Jon asked, raising an eyebrow. "Why didn't you use it?"

"And wreck the town?" Danny said. "I'm it's protector. I hold back so I won't wreck it.

"We were fighting for our lives." Morrigan states, crossing her arms in annoyance. "We don't hold back."

"You're forgetting, we're not on our Earth. We should at the least be respectful." Felicia reminded her.

"You sure your attack can take him down?" Lilith asked.

"If it can't, well, you'll be looking at New Transylvania or wherever he's from." Danny said, looking at Amity Park. "I hope you guys are ready for round three."

They all nodded at Danny before they rushed towards the mountains. Danny was about to go when he heard his friends and sister call out.

"DANNY!" They rushed towards him as he landed down.

"Hey, glad to see you guys are alright." Danny said as they hugged him.

"What's going on? Where's that vampire?" Sam asked.

"And where are the ladies?" Tucker asked.

"Long story, but we're changing the battlefield." Danny said as he turned to the mountains. "Taking it to a place far from people. Going with them to help beat Noseferatu."

"We'll go with you." Sam insists.

"I don't think so…" Danny says. "Demitri's not a ghost, he's a vampire and he's more powerful at night. The Fenton tech won't have much effect on him."

"But-" Sam said before Tucker stopped her.

"He's right, Sam." He said. "We'll just get in the way. We can only stay here and hope he wins."

"Besides, I won't be alone." Danny said in a reassuring way.

"…Just come back safely, okay?" Sam said.

"I always do." Danny said as he floated into the air.

Suddenly, there was a ring. They all looked at Jazz, who pulled her phone and checked on it, making her gasp.

"Mom and Dad are on their way!" She shouts.

"Okay… Guys? Cover for me." Danny goes to join the Darkstalkers.

"Well, let's get to it." Tucker said as he pulled out a wig that looked like Danny's hair.

"…Why do you have that?" Jazz asked as Tucker put on the wig.

"You never know when we're going to cover for him," Tucker said as he went back inside.

"Wonderful…" Sam grumbled as she and Jazz followed him.

Blocks away

Danny managed to catch up with the others, flying about halfway through the city.

"Glad you decided to show up," Jon said from the rooftops. "What kept you?"

"Family problems, you know, usual problems," Danny said.

"Our usual problems involve trying to survive," Jon commented.

"Mine too," Danny said. "Trying to survive school, my parents, fruitloops."

"Wait, your parents?" Felicia asked, looking worried.

"Yeah, they don't know I'm half-ghost." Danny said. "And they're Ghost Hunters, so that's fun for me."

"How come you don't tell your parents?" Jon asked. "Life would be easier for you if they know."

"It's complicated," Danny said. He already knows that his parents would accept him, through two alternate timelines, but he wasn't ready yet.

"So, only your friends and sister knows," Felicia asked.

"Them, and a few others," Danny said as he looked at the town. "Hope we end this before more people get involve."

"What's to stop people from noticing us?" Felicia asks as she and Jon had to run on building tops to reach their spot.

"Luck." Danny answered as he flew past them. "And mostly because they're oblivious."

"What a fascinating world…" Morrigan said.

"So… when this is done, can I get a tour of this world?" Lilith asks with a blush and puts her hands together as she inched closer to Danny.

Cluelessly, Danny scratched his chin in thought.

"Don't you need to get home after this?" He reminds her.

Lilith frowned.

"Darn…"

While this went on, Morrigan snickered teasingly. Meanwhile, Hsien-Ko's own sister had her own thoughts.

"Aww… she's stealing your best shot…" Mei-Ling mused in her head.

"Stop it…" Hsien-Ko grumbled.

"I think you two would be cute together…" Mei-Ling teased her further.

"Why so interested in pairing me off all of the sudden?" She shot back in annoyance.

It was then she noticed Danny closer as he flew while she ran.

"So… if you're 16, why do you look like you're 21 when you're a… whatever you said?" Danny asks.

"It's called a Jiang-Shi, a Chinese vampire. Think of it as a zombie or ghost. And it's because this is the age I was in my past life... " She answered.

''I see, do you drink blood?" Danny asked, curious.

"No, I drain life energy. Or, I would if it weren't for my sister keeping me losing myself." Hsien-Ko answered..

"So… I heard from Hood that Raptor has the hots for you? I'm guessing it's this form, right?" He asks.

"He doesn't know about my human form… even then, he's a disgusting idiot."

"Yeah but you could do better than him anyway. I haven't known him for 24 hours and I already think he's an idiot" Danny says.

"It's not like most boys would want to know I can turn into a zombie that would go crazy without my sister…" Hsien-Ko grumbled.

Danny saw her point but decided to speak his mind.

"Come on… I think you're kinda cool." He says.

That got her attention.

"Huh?"

"I mean… you're pretty in both forms and it's cool you use these powers to help people. You're a hero, like me. Any guy who can't see that isn't worth your time."

Hearing that got Hsien-Ko's blush stickers to turn a brighter red as her eyes widened.

Her lack of noticing where her foot was going caused her to miss a building's edge, causing her to trip and land on the rooftop, face first.

She slid on it a moment.

Oh man, I can't believe that happened... She thought in embarrassment.

Although the rest were ahead, Danny stayed behind to help her.

"Ow…" Hsien-Ko mumbled.

"Watch it!" Mei-Ling shouted in her head.

"Damn…" Hsien-Ko went as she got on her knees, putting a hand on her head to soothe the pain. "Can't believe that happened…"

She then saw a white glove offering her up.

"You okay, Hsien-Ko?" Danny asks.

Hsien-Ko looked up and saw a smiling Danny Phantom offering his hand.

Hsien-Ko didn't know why, but it was as if she saw this boy for the first time.

Whoa... She thought, blushing.

"Uh… I'm okay!" She said quickly, standing up fast and smiling nervously.

''Um, okay..." Danny said.

As she nervously walked away from the confused Danny, her sister was amused.

"What's this? I thought he was too young for you?"

"Shut it…" Hsien-Ko muttered.

Danny only shrugged before resuming his path.

Within minutes, they arrived at their destination.
