Sophie's POV…

'Theta! Theta! Theta! THETA!' I cried to my mate as the Ood continued to advance towards us, but there was no response what so ever.

I had tried so many times that I was starting to freak out. My breathing was starting to get heavy with every breath and tears were forming in my eyes as I tried not to think the worse. If something happened to my mate…oh I didn't even want to think about it. But as hard as I tried, I couldn't. I was thinking of all the possibilities of what could have happened to him and why he wasn't answering my calls, making my breathing even heavier and more tears filled my eyes. It made my vision blurry. If my mate was here and I could hear him in my head, he would tell me to calm down and that he was alright…and that I shouldn't worry.

With that thought in my mind, I took deep, calming breaths. It helped somewhat but not all that much. Since I was focusing on calming down, I jumped at the sound of Jefferson's booming voice, shouting,

"Fire!"

With that, they started firing at the Ood while Rose cowered up against the door and I flinched every time a shot was fired, closing my eyes tightly as I didn't want to see the Ood getting killed even though I knew that this was the only way to get them stop.

Eventually, the shooting stopped and we could finally hear Zach's voice over the tannoy as the shaking of the base lessened slightly.

"We're stabilizing…" The overhead shutters slid closed. "We're in orbit."

With everything calm now, I hurriedly stepped over the dead bodies of the Ood (don't think about it, Sophie… I thought to myself) and I grabbed the transmitter. I hurriedly talked into it while I called to my mate's mentally. Maybe with the base not shaking anymore, I could finally hear his voice in my head.

"Doctor?" There was still static on the other, "Come on, Doctor…answer me…please." I felt the tears gather in my eyes again and then I remembered that Ida was down there two, making me feel bad because I had forgotten she was there. I shook out of it and opened my mouth to speak into the comm again, this time calling the Doctor and Ida, but Rose tore the comm away from me.

Instead of ignoring it, I finally snapped. "What the hell is a matter with you?!"

Rose just simply glanced at me before she turned her attention back to comm, ignoring my question as she spoke into the comm.

"Doctor? Ida? Are you there?"

I glared at her, anger bubbling at the surface. I was just tired of her childish behavior. Ever since the Doctor left, she's been acting this way and I wanted to know why.

"Open Door 25."

I turned my head at the sound and I stiffened as Jefferson and the officer, who had shooting the Ood too, whirled around with their raised up in the air, ready for whoever was going to come through the door. However, it was only Danny.

"It's me!" he exclaimed, holding his hands up. "But they're coming." He closed the door and the computer went off.

"Close Door 25."

"It's the Ood." Danny continued, eyes wide with fear, "They've gone mad!"

"How many of them?"

"All of them! All fifty!"

Jefferson approached the door. "Danny, out of the way." Danny didn't move from his spot and with more force in his tone, he exclaimed, "Out of the way!" He pushed him out of the way of the door.

"But they're armed!" Danny protested. "They're da—"Ignoring him, Jefferson started to open the door, "It's the interface device! I don't know how, but they're using it as a weapon!"

His protests were no use as Jefferson opened the door and the Ood were standing on the other side. One of them immediately advanced, sticking the communication orb to the guard's forehead.

My eyes widened in horror as she screamed while getting electrocuted by the orb. She fell to the floor in a heap, dead.

Jefferson instantly opened fired at the Ood, killing all of them. Even with them dead, everyone was freaking out and speaking in frantic voices. Suddenly, Zach's voice was heard.

"Jefferson, what's happening there?"

He spoke into the wrist device he had, "I've got very little ammunition, sir. How about you?"

"All I've got is a bolt gun. With uh…all of one bolt. I could take out a grand total of one Ood." Zach sighed heavily, "Fat lot of good that is."

"Given the emergency…I recommend Strategy Nine."

As he spoke again, Zach sounded defeated, "Strategy Nine agreed." That settled, he cleared his throat, "Right, we need to get everyone together. Rose? What about Ida and the Doctor? Any word?"

Rose looked out of her mind with worry and her voice was shaking slightly as she responded, "I can't get any reply, just…NOTHING, I keep trying, but it's…" She was cut off by the sound of the communication device crackled and the Doctor's voice came through.

"No! Sorry, I'm fine. Still here!"

'Thank God…' I sighed mentally.

'I'm so sorry, love…' My mate sounded guilty. 'I tried…oh I tried calling for you…but I couldn't get through…'

'It's okay…just…' My voice cracked as tears filled my eyes again and my breath caught in my throat.

'I know…' he said softly.

I was about to respond to him again, but Rose broke through our mental conversation.

"You could have said!" she exclaimed loudly. She sounded so relieved. "You stupid b—"

The communication device screeched loudly, blanking the rest of the word out. I frowned at Rose as I felt my mate wince.

"WHOA! Careful!" Then he switched topics, "Anyway, it's the both of us, me and Ida. Hello! But the seal opened up. It's gone. All we've got left is this chasm."

"How deep is it?" Zach asked.

"Can't tell. It looks like it goes on forever."

"'The pit is open…'" Rose spoke. "That's what the voice said."

"There's nothing…I mean…there's NOTHING coming out?"

"No, no," The Doctor answered Zach. "No sign of 'the Beast'." He rolled his eyes as this was the most absurd thing he heard all day.

"It said, 'Satan.'" Rose sounded scared. Now, I didn't know how much of that was real or how much of it was fake…to make the Doctor feel bad for her.

It wasn't working. "Come on, Rose. Keep it together."

"Is there no such thing? Doctor?

This time he didn't say anything.

"Doctor, tell me there's no such thing." She sounded desperate, so desperate I couldn't help but roll my eyes. Something she noticed and she gave me a sneer.

I shook my head to myself in disbelief. Why was she being so hateful?

"Ida?" Zach said. "I recommend that you withdraw. Immediately."

"But…we've come all this way!" Ida protested.

"Okay, that was an order," Zach told her seriously. "WITH-DRAW. With that thing open, the whole planet's shifted. One more itch and we fall into the black hole. So this thing stops RIGHT NOW."

"But it's not so better up there with the Ood."

"I'm initiating Strategy Nine, so I need the two of you back up top immediately, no ar—"Static filled the air. "Ida? IDA?" She cut off the communication.

I had a feeling that both her and the Doctor were deciding on if they should come back up or not.

'Theta…I know you want to know what's down there…but please come back up…' I begged softly. I waited for a response and soon, I got one.

'We're coming back up, Soph.' I sighed in relief as the Doctor told everyone else what he told me, turning back on the communication.

"Best news I've heard all day!" Rose said loudly with a pleased smile on her face.

Just then, I heard Jefferson release the safety on his gun and I looked at him. My eyes widened at the sight of him pointing a gun at Toby.

"What are you doing?" I squeaked out.

Jefferson didn't let his eyes leave Toby. "He's infected. He brought that thing on board. You saw it."

Toby's eyes widened in shock as he cowered on the floor.

I approached Jefferson slowly. "But you can't shoot him!" I protested. "He's supposed to be your friend! Are you really going to start shooting your own people?!"

"If necessary."

I shook my head. "I won't let you." I went to stand in front of Toby and stared Jefferson down, "If you're going to shoot him, you're going to have to shoot me too."

His eyes widened slightly at those words as he took a long pause. Seeing that he wasn't going to do anything, I kneeled beside Toby and looked up at Jefferson, "You don't need to shoot him, look at his face. Whatever was possessing him, it's gone now. You saw it go into the Ood. He's clean. So, please, don't shoot." My eyes pleaded with him. I didn't want to see someone else die.

He didn't say anything for a couple minutes. "Any sign of trouble…I'll shoot him."

Seeing this was all I was going to get, I nodded my head and he moved away. Then I turned to Toby, looking at him with concern in my eyes. "Are you all right?"

Toby's entire body was trembling and he looked close to tears. "Yeah…I…" He shook his head. "Dunno."

"Can you remember anything?" I asked gently as I rubbed his shoulder to try and stop the shaking.

"Just…it was so angry. It was fury and rage…death…" He looked around the room terrified before meeting my eyes. "It was him…" Toby whimpered. "It was the devil."

Instead of saying anything, I drew him into a comforting hug and he clung to me tightly.

"Okay, we're in," Ida announced once she and the Doctor were inside the capsule. "Bring us up."

Hearing this, I smiled giddily, excited about seeing my mate again. Even though we had been talking to one another mentally, it wasn't the same as seeing him in the flesh where I could hug him and kiss him, which I was going to do once they got up here.

Jefferson immediately went to do what Ida told him to. "Ascension in…three…two…one…"

And then, the lights blinked out, causing the mechanism that was supposed to bring the Doctor and Ida up to stop working.

'Theta!' I instantly cried out mentally as my eyes widened in horror. 'No!'

'Sophie!' Theta sounded just as horrified as I did, 'Are you alright?!'

Before I could even respond, the Voice of the Beast spoke up. "This is the Darkness," he said in a way that sent chills down my spine as the display on the screen changed to that of several Ood. Seeing this made me realize that the Beast was using the Ood to communicate with the rest of us. "You little things that live in the light…clinging to your feeble Suns…which die in the…"

"That's not the Ood," Zach cut in through the communication. "Something's talking through them."

"Only the Darkness remains."

"This is Captain Zachary Cross Flane of Sanctuary Base Six representing the Torchwood archive," Zach stated strongly. "You will identify yourself."

"You know my name."

"What do you want?"

"You will die here," The Beast said. "All of you. This planet is your grave."

"It's him…" Toby breathed as he trembled. "It's him. It's him…"

The Doctor cut into the conversation. "If you are the Beast, then answer me this: which one? Hmm?" he asked. If I could see him, I knew he would be raising his eyebrows in that cute way of his. "'Cos the universe has been busy since you've been gone. There's more religions than there are planets in the sky. The Archivits... Pordonity, Christianity... Pash-Pash, New Judaism... Sanclar... Church of the Tin Vagabond - which devil are you?"

"All of them."

"What, then you're the truth behind the myth?"

"This one knows me – as I know him. The killer of his own kind."

I winced at this, knowing he hated being reminded of that. But the Doctor chose not to acknowledge this.

"How did you end up on this rock?" he questioned.

"The disciples of the Light rose up against me." The Beast sounded bitter and angry. "And chained me in the pit for all eternity."

"When was this?"

"Before time."

"What does THAT mean?!"

"Before time."

"What does 'before time' MEAN?" The Doctor was beginning to get frustrated and I could feel it. In response, I sent calm towards him and I felt the frustration slowly slip away.

"Before light and time and space and matter. Before the cataclysm. Before this universe was created."

"That's impossible," The Doctor said calmly. "No life could have existed back then."

"Is that your religion?"

"It's a belief."

The Beast let out a harsh laugh. "You know nothing," he sneered. "All of you. So small. The Captain, so scared of command. The Solider, haunted by the eyes of his wife."

Jefferson flinched.

"The scientists, still running from daddy. The little boy who lied."

Danny looked uncomfortable.

"The virgin…"

Toby turned sharply at this.

"And the Lost Girls…"

My heart dropped to my stomach and I felt sick. The Beast was talking about me and Rose. Don't tell me how I knew, I just did. Rose seemed to know this too as she froze beside me.

"So far away from home. The valiant children, one who will die and one that will live in battle so very soon."

"Theta…" I breathed out under my breath as my body started shaking.

"Doctor, what does it mean?" This time, Rose had actual fright in her voice.

"Sophie, Rose, don't listen," The Doctor told us quietly. 'Love…he's trying to get into your head…nothing is going to happen to you…' he pressed mentally. 'I'm going to make sure of it. Don't let him get to you.'

I gave a metal nod and I took a deep breath before letting it out slowly. I knew he was right.

"You will die…and I will live!"

The footage of the Ood suddenly cut and was replaced with a roaring horned beast, which caused everyone to jump.

"What the hell was that?!" Danny exclaimed, his voice shaking with fear.

Everyone started speaking over one another. It went on for quite some time until the Doctor made the communication device screech loudly, making everyone quiet down and silence fell over them.

"If you want voices in the dark, then listen to mine," The Doctor demanded. "That thing is playing on the basic fears. Darkness – childhood nightmares…all that stuff…"

"But that's how the devil works," Danny objected.

"Or a good psychologist."

"But…how did he know about my father?" Ida asked quietly.

There was a slight pause for a moment. "Okay, but what makes his version of the truth any better than mine? Hmm? Cos I'll tell you what I can see: humans. Brilliant humans. Humans who travel all the way across space. Flying in a tiny little rocket into the orbit of a black hole! Just for the sake of discovery, that's amazing! Do you hear me? Amazing. All of you. The captain - his officer - his elder - his genius - his friends. All with one advantage. The Beast is alone. We are not. If we can use that to fight against him—"

Before he could finish, there was loud bang coming from shaft and the entire base shook madly, almost sending us flying to the ground.

'Theta!' I exclaimed his name.

'Sophie…the cable! It…' And then there was nothing. I couldn't feel him in my head anymore.

At all.

Not being able to him anymore made my whole world crash around me and I crumbled to the ground, my arms gripping my stomach tightly as my eyes flooded with tears.

'No…' I whimpered.
