Rose's Third Person POV…
Rose barely noticed that Sophie had fallen to the ground, holding onto her stomach and staring blankly into space. Even if she did, she wouldn't have cared anyway.
Eyes wide in horror, Rose watched as dust wafted onto the exploration desk. No! "Doctor!" she cried into the communicator. "We lost the cable! Doctor, are you all right?" There was no reply. "Doctor?" she asked again, desperation in her tone of voice.
"The comms are down," Zach informed.
But Rose ignored him, still focusing on getting the Doctor's attention. "Doctor? Doctor, can you hear me?"
"I've still got life signs, but…we've lost the cable."
Again she ignored him. "Say something – are you there?"
"There's no way out. They're stuck down there."
A whimper sounded finally drawing Rose's attention to Sophie, whose entire body was shaking now. A normal person would ask what was wrong and be concerned, but someone who…wasn't in the right frame of mind, so to speak, laughed gleefully. If only the Doctor could see her now. He would be so disappointed in her… Mm, maybe Rose could use this to her advantage. She could take charge like the Doctor would and he would be so proud of her that he would leave Sophie and be with her. Rose grinned to herself, ready to put that plan into action.
"But we've GOT TO bring the back," Rose argued as they all peered down the lift shaft, well except for Sophie, who was still crouched down on the ground with her arms wrapped around herself, staring blankly into space.
Jefferson shook his head. "They're ten miles down. We haven't got another ten miles of cable."
Suddenly, there was another loud bang on the door, making them jump at the sound. Sophie didn't even flinch, though, as her mind still trying to reach out to the Doctor, but it was of no use.
"Captain." Jefferson spoke into the wrist com in a serious tone of voice. "Situation report."
There was silence, except for the clear banging on the other end of the com. Finally, a sigh was heard, coming from Zach.
"It's the Ood…" he said. "They're cutting through the door bolts. They're breaking in."
Jefferson sighed, wishing that it had been better news over on that side. "Yeah, it's the same on Door 25."
"How long is it going to take?" Rose asked.
"Well, it's only a basic frame, it should take ten minutes." There was another bang and Jefferson winced. "Eight."
It was then that Zach spoke again. "I've got a security frame, it might last a bit longer, but that doesn't help you."
Rose decided now was the time to put her plan into action. "Right," she said confidently as she took over the role of the Doctor. "So we need to stop them – or get out – or both."
"I'll take both, yeah?" Danny responded first. "But how?"
"You heard the Doctor, why do you think that thing cut him off?" Rose questioned rhetorically. "'Cos he was making sense. He was telling you to think yourself out of this situation. Come on!" No one responded and she went on as she straightened her back while a serious look crossed her face. "For a start, we need some lights. There's gotta be some sort of power somewhere."
"There's nothing I can do." Zach grumbled to himself bitterly. "Some captain, stuck in here, pressing buttons."
Rose rolled her eyes internally. "That's what the Doctor MEANT…" she stressed out. "Press the right buttons."
"They've gutted the generators!" Zach exclaimed then there was a pause before he spoke again, realization in his tone of voice, "But the rocket's got an independent supply. If I could reroute that…Mr. Jefferson? Open the bypass conduits. Override the safety…"
Jefferson did as he said. "Opening the bypass conduits, sir."
"Channeling rocket feed. In 3…2…1…power…"
And just like that, the lights came back on and Rose clapped her hands enthusiastically. "There we go!"
"Let there be light!" Danny laughed loudly.
"What about that Strategy Nine thing?" Rose questioned, suddenly remembering that.
"Not enough power," Jefferson informed her. "It needs a hundred percent."
Rose nodded in understanding. "Alright then, we need a way out. Zach, Mr. Jefferson, you start working on that." Once she got conformation from the both of them, she went over to Toby, who was in the same position as Sophie was. "Toby, what about you?"
He stood up. "I'm not a solider, I can't do anything," he said sulking.
"No, you're the archeologist," Rose told him. That was just as important. That's what she learned from the Doctor. There was no one that wasn't. "What do you know about the pit?"
"Well, n-n-n-nothing," he shuttered. "We can't even translate the language."
Rose rolled her eyes, turning away. "Right." Before she could fully walk away, he stopped her.
"H-hold on. Maybe…"
"What is it?" she asked as she turned back towards him.
"Since that thing was inside of my head, it's like the letters make more sense."
"Well…get to work…" Rose ordered. "Anything you can translate, just anything…" He nodded and she approached Danny next, "As for you, Danny-boy – you're in charge of the Ood – anyway of stopping them?"
Danny hesitated. "Well…I don't know."
In response, she pulled him to a computer. "Then find out. The sooner we get control of the base, the sooner we can get the Doctor out. Shift." She smacked him playfully on the shoulder with a grin. Then she turned to Sophie, her grin turning into a smirk as she headed over to her, kneeling down beside her. "You know, Sophie, if only the Doctor could see you now…" she said, almost sneering. The blonde didn't speak, only flinched in response. "Probably wouldn't love you anymore if he saw you like this." This statement made Sophie's head shoot up and look at her with wide eyes. "Yeah, I overhead your talk. The Doctor loves you and you love him. Well let me you tell you something…" Rose leaned in close to Sophie and whispered with a hateful smirk on her face. "I saw him first, so he's mine, and I swear, I'm going to do all that I can to take him away from you. Got it." She didn't let her respond as she stood up and went to watch over the crew as they worked.
Sophie's POV…
Rose's words kept repeating in my mind.
The Doctor probably wouldn't love you anymore if he saw you like this.
He would be so disappointed in you.
I didn't want to believe her, but maybe she was right. At least that was what my head was telling me.
But my heart was saying: Don't listen to her, Sophie! She's wrong! The Doctor loves you no matter what!
They were going in different directions and I didn't know who to listen to.
My head or my heart.
I stayed in my crouched position with my head buried in my knees as I tried calling out to my mate one last time.
'Please Theta…answer me…I need to know if you're alive…please that's all I want...'
But like all the other times, it was silent.
This time I couldn't stop the sob from escaping my lips. Luckily, it was muffled by my knees, so no one heard me. I didn't want anyone to worry. They had more important things to worry about than me.
With a sniff, I lifted my head up and wiped my eyes to get rid of my tears as I looked up over at Rose, who was over by Jefferson while he was on the computer.
"Open junctions five…six…seven…" There was another bang at the door and I flinched. It was only a matter of time until the Ood were able to get through and I was dreading to think about what would happen when they did. "…reroute filters sixteen to twenty-four. Go."
Then I looked to see Toby working on the symbols.
Last but not least, I looked at Danny. He was working on the computer as well.
For the first time, I felt useless on an adventure. Everyone was helping and here I was, on the ground, not doing a damn thing. I knew I could handle myself without the help of any man, but I was the strongest with the Doctor. Just like he was the strongest with me. We were two sides of the same coin, you couldn't have one without the other.
And I wish he was still with me, but he wasn't. I had to make the most of it. Shaking my head, I stood up on shaky feet, wrapping my arms around my stomach tightly as if I was holding myself together.
In that moment, Danny spoke up, speaking to Rose as he looked over at her. "There's all sorts of viruses that could stop the Ood. Trouble is, we haven't got any of them on board.
"Well, that's handy, listing all the things we haven't got," Rose responded sarcastically, moving over to him. "We haven't got a swimming pool either. Or a Tesco."
Normally I would have found her sarcasm funny, but now it was just annoying and condescending.
Suddenly, the computer beeped and as I moved to get a closer look, the word, 'affirmative', flashed on the screen. This got Danny all excited.
"Oh my God! It says yes! I can do it! Hypothetically, if you flip the monitor, broadcast a flare…it can disrupt the telepathy! Brainstorm!" He sounded so proud of himself.
"What happens to the Ood then?" I asked, or rather blurted out, causing Danny and Rose to look at me. There was a look of surprise on Danny's face, which was to be expected as these were the first words I had spoken since we lost the Doctor and Ida.
Quickly shaking out of his surprise, he answered me excitedly, "It'll tank them out, spark out!"
I stiffened. "You mean kill them, don't you?"
Instead of him replying, Rose did, rolling her eyes at me, "Of course not, Sophie. Don't be stupid. It'll only knock them out." Before I could say anything, she turned away from me and told Danny with enthusiasm, "There you go then! Do it!"
At this, his face fell. "No, but…" He shook his head. "I'd have to transmit from the central monitor. We need to go to Ood Habitation."
And there was another bang at the door, causing sparks to fly. This time I didn't flinch as I looked worriedly at the door.
It was too dangerous to be in here, but it was equally as dangerous if we went to Ood Habitation. What else could we do though? We had to stop the Ood and that was the only way we could if we went there. I chewed at my thumbnail nervously.
"That's what we'll do, then." Rose said with a deciding nod before heading over to Jefferson. "Mr. Jefferson, sir! Any way out?" It was obvious she was taking on the roll as the Doctor since he wasn't here. But that's what I should be doing. I couldn't take over now though, so I had to listen to Rose. Something I didn't want to do. I didn't trust her, not after those threatening words she gave me.
"Just about…" Jefferson told her, "There's a network of tunnels running underneath the base. We should be able to gain access from here."
Rose was smiling as he told her this, "Venalation shafts."
"Yeah, I appreciate the reference, but there's no venalation. No air, in fact – at all. They were designed for machines, not life forms."
Another bang from the door sounded and I chewed at my fingers, more nervousness filling my stomach.
"But – I can manipulate the oxygen field from here." Zach informed. "Create discrete pockets of atmosphere…if I can control it manually…I can follow you through the network."
"Right, so we go down, and you make the air follow us. By hand." There was a little bit of disbelief in Rose's voice.
"You wanted me pressing buttons."
Rose sighed slightly at this. "Yeah – I asked for it." Then a serious look crossed her face and the seriousness showed in her voice too as she said, "Okay, we need to go to Ood Habitation, work out a route."
Soon enough, he worked out a route and now we were all ready to go down the maintenance tunnels, except for Danny, who was still at the computer. There was a violent bang on Door 25. I winced. Those have been going on forever, each time getting closer to getting the door open.
"Danny!" Rose shouted at him, glancing fearfully at the door.
"Hold on! Just conforming…"
"Dan, you gotta go NOW!" Another bang. "Come on!"
"Danny, please!" I groaned.
When the computer bleeped, Danny grinned. "Yeah!" He showed us what looked to be an orange computer chip that he took from the machine as he hurried over to the maintenance tunnels. "Put that in the monitor…and it's a bad time to be an Ood!"
"We're coming back, have you got that?" Rose commanded. "We're coming back to this room and we're getting the Doctor back."
Now that was a plan I was on board with. If he was alive that this… As soon as this depressing thought crossed my mind, I shook my head furiously. No. He wasn't dead. I knew my heart that he wasn't. He might not be there with me mentally, but he was in my heart just like he always was and always would be. That's how I knew he wasn't dead. I would feel it if he was.
"Okay, Danny, you go first, then you Miss Tyler, then you Sophie," Jefferson told us. "And then Toby, I'll go last in defense of position. Now come on! Quick as you can!"
We listened to him, going in the order that Jefferson told us to go in. So I came in right after Rose. As soon as I was inside, I had to plug my nose. It stunk in here.
Rose sniffed the air and made a face as she looked over at Danny. "God it stinks. You all right?"
"Yeah, I'm laughing," Danny joked sarcastically.
I heard a thud from behind me and I didn't have to look back to know that it was Toby.
"Which way do we go?" Danny asked Zach through the comm.
"Just straight ahead. Keep going until I say so."
Jefferson joined us just in time as we heard a final bang. The Ood had busted open the door. We quickly crawled down the tunnel.
"Not your best angle, Danny." Rose commented as she stared at Danny's bum.
"Oi! Stop!"
"I dunno, looks good from where I am." Toby said from behind me. I could feel him staring at my bum and I cursed myself for wearing a skirt and the blue thong I had on as well. Then I jumped when Toby thought it was appropriate to slide one of his hands under my skirt to give my bare bum a smack but it was hard or loud enough to catch the attention of everyone else. When his hand disappeared, I turned my head to glare at him. He only smirked at me and I shook my head in disgust. Men.
"Straight along until you find junction 7.1." Zach told us as we continued to crawl down the tunnel. "Keep breathing. I'm feeding you air. I've got you."
By the time we made it to where he told us to, we all had to sit down as we were all out of breath from crawling through the tunnel. I also felt sweaty and hot from it too, my hair was sticking to my face from how sweaty I was, making me wish I had pulled my long blonde hair up in a bun or something.
I used my hand as a fan to try and get some air in my face. It wasn't working as well as I thought it would.
"We're at 7.1, sir," Danny informed Zach.
"Okay, I've got you…" Just then, there was a bang, making me remember that more Ood were trying to get through the door where Zach was. "I'm just aerating the next section."
"Getting kinda cramped, sir…can you hurry up?" Danny complained.
"I'm working on half power here."
Jefferson rolled his eyes at Danny. "Stop complaining."
"Mr. Jefferson says, 'stop complaining.'" Rose said to Danny.
"I heard."
"He heard."
I sighed, leaning back against the wall. As much as I hated hearing complaining, it was understandable why. I wanted to get out of here as much as the next person. I wanted to get out so we could save the Doctor before something bad to happen to him.
"But the air's getting a bit thin." Toby complained next as he pulled the wrist watch to his mouth.
This time Rose rolled her eyes. "HE'S complaining now."
"I heard." Jefferson grumbled with a sigh.
Danny wiped the sweat off of his forehead and I made the mistake of sniffing the air. My face screwed up in disgust.
"Danny, is that you?" I asked. "You smell disgusting!" I knew I was being a little mean, but the smell was so bad, it was hard not to be."
"I'm not exactly happy!" Danny protested defensively.
"Sorry." I apologized. I couldn't blame him for that. This was a pretty stressful situation.
Just then, Zach's voice came over the comm again. "I'm just moving the air…" he told us. "I've got to oxygenate the next section. Now, keep calm…or it's gonna feel worse."
All of the sudden, there was a loud banging from the other side of the tunnel and Jefferson aimed his gun while I jumped. Geez, I was so jumpy today.
"What was that?"
"Mr. Jefferson, what was that?" Rose asked loudly.
"What was that noise?"
"Captain…what was that?"
"The junction in Habitation Five's been opened – it must be the Ood…" Zach answered grimly. "They're in the tunnels!" He suddenly exclaimed warningly.
"Shit." I breathed out, my eyes widening. This wasn't good!
"Well, open the gate!"
"I've got to get the air in!"
"Just open it!" Danny shouted at Zach. Then realizing he was being rude to his captain, he added quickly, "Sir…"
Rose spoke up. "Where are they? Are they close?"
"Don't know, I can't – I can't see them…the computer doesn't register Ood as a proper life forms."
"You gotta be kidding me." I muttered under my breath.
This time, Rose agreed with me. "Whose idea was that?" she asked in disbelief.
Danny, obviously, couldn't take the wait anymore as he practically roared into the wrist device while shaking and sweating, "OPEN THE GATE!"
Finally it opened and we lunged through it.
"Danny, turn left." Zach ordered. "Immediate left."
We crawled down the tunnel as fast as we can while Jefferson crawled backwards with his gun at the ready. I hated crawling like this especially being in front of someone who had suddenly became handsy and it was hurting my knees.
"The Ood, sir –can't you just trap them?" Jefferson asked. "Cut off the air?"
"Not without cutting off yours." We heard another bang from over the comm.
"Danny, turn right. Go right! Go fast Dan – they're gonna catch up!"
He did as Zach said in a frantic manner.
"I'll maintain defense of position!" Jefferson said and my eyes widened.
"What? No – you can't do that! You have to keep moving!" I shouted at him, looking at him like he was insane. But there was concern in my voice. We had already lost Scooti, Ida, and the Doctor, we didn't need to lose anyone else.
He sat down and aimed his gun. "Sophie – that's my job. You and Miss Tyler have you're task – now see to it."
"But…" I started to protest. I was interrupted by Rose tugging on my arm.
"Sophie, come on." She hissed at me and I glared at her.
"Oh shut up!" I snarled at her and she looked at me startled. I was done with her attitude. She was lucky that I didn't smack her in the face. "I am done! Done! With you attitude! I'm with the Doctor, get the fuck over it!" She glared at me, but I ignored her completely as I whirled my head towards Jefferson, who was looking at me with wide eyes, "And you – are going to come with us, okay?! I am not going to let anyone else die today! So, come on!" Once I finished, I sighed in relief. I felt so much better. I was keeping that all bottled up and I finally exploded.
This time, Jefferson didn't fight me and he crawled with us. We all made it to the next junction. Of course Jefferson had to shoot Ood along the way but we made it.
"8.2. Open 8.2. Zach!" Danny said loudly.
"I've got to aerate it!"
"OPEN IT NOW!"
"I'm TRYING!"
Soon enough, it was too much and Danny thumped loudly at the gate in desperation.
Rose stopped him. "Danny, stop it. That's not helping."
"Zach, get it open!" Toby said.
Finally, the gate opened and we tumbled into there, the door closing behind us. We didn't anytime as we continued down the corridor.
"Danny, turn left and head for 9.2. That's the last one."
'Finally!' I thought to myself. Then I thought mentally even though my mate wouldn't be able to hear me, 'Theta, we're one step closer to saving you. I love you.'
We got to the end of the corridor and Danny spoke into the comm again. "Zach, we're at the final junction. 9.1."
"Opening 9.2."
The gate opened and the Ood were right there, waiting for us. I bit back a cry as we all stumbled backwards, shocked.
Jefferson didn't get a chance to us his gun as Rose quickly found a way to get us out of their by a grilling on the roof of the corridor. Everyone went through the hole and once everyone was there, we went to start running. But then Ood appeared at the other end of the corridor, causing us to run in the opposite direction with Danny leading us and the Ood pursuing us.
"It's this way!" he told us.
"Hurry up!" Zach shouted.
We finally made it to Ood Habitation and we burst through the door. The Ood that were inside looked up upon our arrival.
Jefferson, Danny, and Toby all ran to the computer, but Rose suddenly stopped and blocked me from passing.
"What the hell are you…?" Before I could finish even finish my question, she whirled around and punched me right in the face. It was surprisingly hard and I fell to the ground, my head smacking against the ground.
Black dots clouded my version and I knew I was going to faint.
"I'm sorry…Sophie…but the Doctor is mine. Mine."
These were the last words I heard before my eyes rolled back and I blacked out.
