Disclaimer: I do not own Doctor Who and never will. But I do own Sophie McQueen and any other characters I make up!
A huge thanks to everyone who reviewed, favorited, and put this story on their alerts!
Sophie's outfit for this episode is on my polyvore :)
New A/N: Combined part one and two together so there's not so many parts for this episode and the next part should be the last one, which is being worked on a little. I want to get season two finished just as much as you do, but I've been extremely busy with work at all, which is why it takes so long to get chapters of my stories out. You can also blame writer's block too XD Anyway enjoy the full long chapter ;)
Also I would love to know what you guys think will happen in the season finale of season two, especially if you think Sophie gets sent to the parallel universe along with Rose, Mickey, and Jackie ;)
Sophie's POV…
It has been three months exactly since our adventure where I almost died and Rose Tyler left the TARDIS.
Surprisingly, it felt strange without Rose in the TARDIS. At least in the first few weeks so the Doctor and I continued traveling to forget about what happened. The adventures were fun and nothing dangerous happened (I know weird right). And the best part was that we could spend time together without getting interrupted. But it was still weird that Rose wasn't here. Sometimes I would think about her. It wasn't all the time, but she was my best friend and I missed her, or well who she was before I started traveling with her and the Doctor. I did wish things would have been different, then Rose would still be traveling.
However, we couldn't change it, so I had to let it go and move on. Now, I didn't really think about her that often since I was focusing on traveling and spending time with my mate.
Since it was my birthday, the Doctor decided to surprise me.
I giggled to myself as my mate covered my eyes with his hands when we landed somewhere. "Where are you taking me?" I asked.
"It's a surprise, love." He responded and I could hear the grin in his voice as he told me this. "And with a surprise, I can't tell you what it is. It's a rule."
"Oh come on, just one hint." I begged slightly in a husky tone. I didn't have to look at him to know that he was shaking his head at me, but he was still grinning.
"Sorry love, that won't work on me…this time…" he purred in my ear.
Instead of shivering in response, I laughed and it was my turn to shake my head. "Okay fine…I won't beg anymore." I sighed dramatically.
My Theta laughed. "Oh! No need to be over dramatic." He sighed. "Fine, I'll tell you ONE thing."
I perked up. "What's that?"
He paused for a moment. "You're going to love it." He finally answered and I groaned, earning a laugh from him.
"Oh come on!"
This got another laugh out of him. I pouted and huffed to myself, crossing my arms over my chest. Nothing was said for a little bit until the Doctor spoke.
"Ready for your surprise?" he asked, grinning.
I nodded my head enthusiastically and I heard the TARDIS doors open, then my mate's excited voice.
"Surprise!" He removed his hands from my eyes. Instead of seeing an amazing sight, I saw nothing but a gate.
"Uh…Theta?" I pointed and a sheepish look crossed his face.
"Ah, must have parked the wrong way."
"Obviously." I teased, nudging him in the side.
Theta pouted at me, but I kissed it away before pulling back, grinning at him. Once I pulled away, he ran over to the console to send us back in flight, so we could land in the right direction. Then he went back over to me and covered my eyes again.
"Let's try this again." My mate told me before opening the TARDIS doors again and removing his hands from my eyes. "Surprise!"
I found myself staring at a normal looking street. "Um…I love it." I smiled at him, hoping it looked genuine.
My mate rolled his eyes at me, smiling. "This isn't your surprise, love. It's where your surprise is." Before I could respond, he grabbed my hand and we stepped outside of the TARDIS together, looking around as we started walking down the street. "Take a guess where we are." He told me with a grin and a twinkle in his eyes.
"Um…" I looked around for a moment before spotting a Shayne Ward poster tacked onto a fence. It was advertising his greatest hits. "We're in the near future?"
He hummed in response. I took a number of random guesses but I finally guessed right, thanks to a banner we walked underneath. I gasped.
"The Olympics! You took me to the Olympics!" My voice rose in excitement and my mate laughed joyfully.
"Oh yes!" Theta beamed at me and I leaned up, going to kiss his cheek but he turned his head at the exact moment, making my kiss land on his lips. Which I didn't mind. I smiled against his lips, then pulled back. He was definitely going to get something for this later tonight.
"I love it!" I told him happily.
He smiled down at me softly. "Good. Happy birthday, Soph."
I smiled back. "Which Olympics is this?" I asked curiously.
"The 30th one." He answered before taking in a deep breath, smiling brightly. "It only seems like yesterday a few naked Greek blokes were tossing a discus about…wrestling each other in the sand with crowds standing about, begging…" He paused. "No…wait a minute…that was Club Med." My mate laughed at his own joke, nudging me in the side.
"Theta, that's not really funny." I looked at him amused.
"Oh come on, it's a little bit funny?"
I shook my head and my mate looked like he was about to say something, but shook his head before continuing on with what he was saying.
"Just in time for the opening doo dah – ceremony…tonight, I thought you'd like that since you said you always wanted to go to one. Last one they had in London was dynamite." He looked up with a look on his face as if he was remembering something fondly and I watched him, smiling. "Wembley, 1948. I loved it so much, I went back and watched it all over again. Fella carrying the torch…lovely chap…what was his name…?"
I didn't listen to him after that as I saw 'missing' posters of children tacked onto the lamp post. There was a whole lot of them. Seeing them made my maternal instincts kick in and I let go of my mate's hand to go get a closer look at them. He didn't notice that I let go as he carried on, oblivious to what I was doing, still yapping to himself.
"Mark…? John…? Mark…? Legs like pipe cleaners, but strong as a whippet."
"Theta…" I called to him, concern in my voice.
"And in those days, everybody had a tea party to go to."
"Theta?" I called again.
"Did you ever have one of those little cakes with the crunchy ball bearing on top –"
I interrupted him before he could finish. "Thete, I love you, but shut up for a minute and come look at this! Please." This time, he noticed the concern in my voice and he came over to me. I pointed at the missing posters. He looked, read them, and then frowned.
"What's taking them, do you think?" His eyes scanned the street that we were on. "Snatching children from a thoroughly ordinary street like this. Why's it so cold…? Is something reducing the temperature…?"
Now that he mentioned it, it was cold and I shivered before snuggling into my mate's side, letting his warm (at least to me) body warm me up. It helped as did him wrapping his arm around me to pull me closer to him.
"Better?" he asked me, kissing the top of my head.
"Much." I nuzzled his shoulder with my cheek as thanks. Then I rested my head against him as I looked back at the missing posters, my concern coming back in full force. "It says they all went missing this week. Why would a person do something like this?" A sick person, that's who. I hated people who took children. Their parents must be worried out of their minds. I know I would be if it was my child, especially if it was mine and Theta's. There would be serious hell to pay if someone took my child away from me.
I was just angry just thinking about it. I shook myself out of it before it showed.
"What makes you think it's a person?"
I looked up at my mate to answer but the sound of a door opening stopped and I turned my head around to look.
A woman dumped a recycling sack on the pavement outside of her house and then she hurriedly went back inside just as quickly as she came, casting furtive looks around her all the while. I frowned.
"Well, whatever or whoever took them, it's got the whole street scared to death."
The Doctor nodded, squeezing my waist. "Yeah…but we'll find out who or what did this." He kissed the side of my head again. "C'mon, let's go take a look around…see if we can find anything."
I nodded in agreement. "Good idea…" Then I added, "And I think it might be a good idea if we look around separately. We'll be able to cover more ground that way."
My mate frowned at the idea and I couldn't blame him after what we went through with the Wire and Rose all at almost the same time. But after a moment, he nodded, agreeing with me.
"Yeah, good idea, love." He broke away from me and gave me his coat, helping me into it, so I would stay warm. He was too sweet for his own good. "Alright, I'll look down that way." He pointed to down the street. "And you look around here and see if you can find anything." After I nodded, he kissed me softly for a few minutes and he pulled away. Then he rested his forehead against mine for a moment before tearing away. "Be safe."
"Don't worry, I'll be fine." I caressed his face with a smile. "Now go before I make you." I gave him a teasing grin as I shoved him back playfully and he laughed, kissing my forehead before doing as I said, running down the road. Then I remembered something and called after him, "Don't get into any trouble!"
It was already too late as he was already at the other end of the road. I shook my head as I started to walk around the area, hoping to find something.
I had only been walking around for a few minutes when something caught my eye. It was a car and it had stopped in the middle of the road.
I halted to a stop and watched as a dark-skinned man, who was wearing the garb of a council worker, prop his broom up against his white van. I tried to see what his name was on the name tag he was wearing, but I couldn't see it.
He approached the car, looking as if he had seen this before. It caught my attention, that's for sure.
"There you go," he said to the driver, bending down to look at him inside of the car. "Fifth today. Not natural, is it?"
"I dunno what happened, I had it serviced less than a month ago."
The council worker shook his head. "Nah, don't even try and explain it, mate." He told the driver. "All the cars are doing it. And do you know what it is? It's bonkers. Bonkers." The driver got out of the car. "Come on then, pal. I'll help you shift it. Quicker you're on the way, happier you'll be."
I watched for a moment as the counsel worker pushed the car from behind while the driver tried to forward it. He was straining to push it. He looked kind of pathetic, so I decided to help.
I went up to him. "Hey, need any help?"
"No, we're alright, love."
Hearing this made me grin in amusement. Men. Never could admit needing help. "Could've fooled me." I teased. "But seriously, I can help. I'm stronger than I look, trust me." I gave him a smile and he stared at me for a moment before nodding as he moved to give me room to help. I got into position as I stretched out my hand. "I'm Sophie, by the way."
"Kel." He shook my outstretched hand before he let go and we began pushing.
Suddenly, the engine sprang to life, causing Kel by surprise and he tripped over his own feet, falling to his knees
I stopped myself from giggling in amusement as his cheeks turned red in embarrassment.
Kel stood to his feet and brushed himself off, his cheeks still pink.
Biting back a wide grin, I stepped up to him and crossed my arms over my chest. "Does this happen often, Kel?"
"Cheers, mate!" The driver called as he drove off down the road.
"Been doing it all week," Kel responded disgruntled.
I gave a frown. "So, since the children been going missing?"
He shrugged, not seeing the connection like I was. "I s'pose so."
Wanting to know more, I followed behind him. "How does this happen anyway?"
"Every car cuts out. The council are going nuts! I mean, they've giving this street the works. Renamed…I've been tarmarking every pot hole." Kel gestured to one of the pot holes proudly. "Look at that. Beauty, init? Yep! And all that because of that Olympic Torch comes right by the end of this close. Just down there." He pointed in the direction. "Everything's got to be perfect, ain't it? Only it ain't."
I knew he was talking about the children and I nodded sadly. Poor kids. Hopefully they were safe whatever they were.
Just then, an older woman came up to us. "It takes 'em when they're playing."
The it part caught my attention. So, it must be some kind of alien that was taking the children.
"What do you mean?" I pressed as I stared at the woman. "What's taking them?"
"Danny…Jane…Dale…snatched in a blink of an eye."
Before I could ask her to elaborate, the sound of the Doctor's pleading voice caught my attention.
I looked up and saw him backing away from a large man, who looked like he was about to beat my mate, with his hands up in a surrendering pose.
"I'm – I'm a police officer!" he protested, starting to babble like he usually did. "I've got a badge – and a police car…you don't have to get – I can – I can prove it! Just hold on—" He quickly stuffed a hand in his pocket to fish out the psychic paper.
At the same time, I searched the pockets of his coat and found the psychic paper in one of them. Whoops.
"We've had plenty of coppers poking around here." The man said roughly. "And you don't look - or sound like any of them."
They were over by me now and Theta pointed at me in the face with his index finger. I didn't flinch, only rose a brow at him. "See, look! I've got a colleague!"
"Girlfriend actually." I corrected, crossing my arms over my chest. "But he's telling the truth. We are police." I flashed the psychic paper at the man with a grin. "DI Sophie McQueen, at your service, and my partner, John Smith." I gave him a wink before glancing at my mate's face and he was making a pouty face, probably because of the face that I called my partner. I stifled a laugh.
Even with the psychic paper, the man didn't believe it. "You look less copper than him."
"I'm gonna take that as a compliment." I said with a cheeky wink before I grew serious. "But we are and here to help."
Theta nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we are! Always!"
"What are you gonna do?"
Theta and I looked to see a dark-skinned woman join the rest of us, crossing her arms over her chest as she stared at us.
"The police have knocked on every door – no clues, no leads, nothing."
"Look, kids run off sometimes, all right?" The man rolled his eyes at the older woman. "That's what they do…"
Before he could continue, the older woman cut him off, this time it was her turn to roll her eyes. "Dale Hixon in your garden, playing with your Tommy, and then…!" She mimicked something disappearing and I shared a look with my mate. "Right in front of me, like he was never there! There's no need to look any further than this street. It's right here among us."
Theta cleared his throat. "Why don't we –"
Another neighbor stormed on the scene and cut Theta off. "Why don't we start with him?" she sneered, pointing at Kel. "There's been all sorts like him in this street, day and night!"
"Fixing things up for the Olympics!" Kel protested indignantly.
Tom's Dad snorted a bit. "Yeah, and taking an awful long time about it!"
"Look, let's talk about this like adults." I tried to say but none of them were listening.
"You don't – what you just said, that's slander!"
"I think we need to just—"My mate tried this time. Again, no one was paying attention. Too involved in arguing back and forth.
"I want an apology off her!"
"Stop picking on him." The older woman said.
"Yeah, stop picking on me!" Kel exclaimed childishly.
"And stop trying to be blind! It's evil!"
"I don't believe it evil." The neighbor spoke out, glaring at Kel.
He glared right back. "Oh no, you just believe in tarmakers with sack loads of kidnapped kiddies in their van!"
"Ay, ay, ay, that's what she's saying." Tom's Dad protested.
"Would you stop ganging up on me?!" Kel yelled and the neighbor yelled back shrilly.
"Feeling guilty now are we!"
Hearing them argue made me want to shout at them for not dealing with what was really going on. Just as I was about to, my mate got to it first. Even though he didn't shout what I was going to.
"Fingers on lips!" he shouted, using that commanding voice of his that I loved in the bedroom. He put his finger on his lips and glared around at everyone as if daring them not to do as he said.
One of them had already listened and the others followed after a moment bewilderment. Silence filled the air, making me breathe a sigh of relief.
"Thank you." I looked at everyone and crossed my arms. "Now, maybe, we can actually talk about what's going on." Then I glanced my mate to see him looking at me pointedly. "What?" He tapped his lips with his finger, silently telling me to do the same as everyone else. Why me? I hadn't done anything.
My lips turned into a full on pout as I placed my finger on my lips.
After making sure everyone had their fingers on their lips, Theta spoke up, getting to the subject at hand. "In the last six days, three of your children have been stolen," he said seriously. "Snatched out of thin air, right?"
"Er…can I…?"
Theta motioned for her to go ahead.
The older woman removed her finger and used to gesture around the area. "Look around you…this was a safe street 'til it came. It's not a person." She insisted and of course, we believed her. Well, I somewhat did. I think it was a person but the person didn't know what she or he was doing. "Maybe you're coppers – maybe you're not. I don't care who you are. Can you please help us?"
"Of course we'll help." Theta reassured.
From the corner of my eye, I noticed someone was watching us. I looked up and found myself looking at young girl, looking down at all of us.
Then I felt someone's gaze and it was the young African American woman. I narrowed my eyes at her as she quickly looked away before heading in the direction of her house, where the little girl was at.
I frowned. Did…did this girl have something to do with what was going on? My gut instincts told me yes, but I wasn't going to say anything until I was completely sure.
About thirty minutes later, I stood off to the side as I watched my mate sniff the air repeatedly with Tom's Dad staring at us through his window. I figured he was sniffing the air for something.
"Got anything?" I questioned.
He gave a hum in response as he sniffed a few more times. "Can you smell it?" he asked me.
I furrowed my eyebrows, sniffing the air.
"What does it remind you of?"
"Um…metal?" I suggested.
He nodded, grinning at me. "Exactly! Good job, love!" He kissed my cheek and I laughed.
"Thank you! No applause!" I joked and he chuckled, turning my head to kiss my lips this time before he wrapped an arm around my waist as we left the area with my mate waving to Tom's Dad cheerfully.
My mate and I walked down a narrow alleyway, hand in hand. This was the same alleyway that Danny Edwards disappeared in.
"Danny Edwards cycled in one end but came out the other." My mate was saying, explaining what happened to one of the kids.
"How's that possible?" I wondered. "Teleport?"
"Mm…maybe." My mate stopped abruptly, bringing me to stop as well. "Whoa, there is goes again!" He showed me the back of his free hand. "Look at the hairs on the back of my manly hairy hand."
I rolled my eyes slightly, but didn't correct him. His hands were very manly. Sexy too.
I inhaled deeply and made a face. The same smell was in the air as it was at Tom's Dad house.
"Geez, it smells like…a burnt fuse or something…or when you burnt our dinner last night…" I commented.
"I didn't burn it!" my mate protested. "It was just…just crispy!"
"If you say so, love." I told him. Sometimes we sounded like an old married couple.
Theta huffed a bit before changing the subject. "There's a residual energy in the spots where the kids vanished." He said. "Whatever it was, it used an awful lot of power to do this."
That was something I could agree with.
Making it back to the close, I was walking behind my mate, a few steps behind. Every once in a while he would look back to make sure I was there.
It was then I spotted a cute ginger tabby cat walking by and I brightened. I loved cats, despite the fact that we had been attacked by cats, back in New Earth.
"Aw, look how cute you are!" I cooed, stepping up to the cat and bending down to pet him.
"Ah! Thanks, love, I do try!" Theta beamed over at me, thinking I was talking about him.
"Um, Theta, I wasn't talking about you." I said as I nodded towards the cat.
He spotted him and looked disappointed. "Oh…"
I giggled at the cute disappointed look. "Oh Theta, are you jealous of a cat?" I teased, earning a loud scoff.
"Of course not." Theta sniffed, turning away from me.
I stifled a giggle, then took notice that the cat was wandering over to a cardboard box. "Aw, don't go." I followed after the cat and he climbed inside of the box. "Don't hide, just ignore my boyfriend, he's just being a sour puss." I felt Theta exclaim, 'oi!' in my head and I ignored it, holding back another giggle.
All of a sudden there was a whooshing sound and the cat's meow echoed slightly as if fading into darkness.
Immediately, I peered inside of the box and was shocked. The cat was as if it was never there in the first place. "Theta!" I cried, getting his attention. "Look, the cat's disappeared!"
He hurried over to me.
The smell finally hit me and I hurriedly stood up, stumbling back a little as I plugged my nose. It smelt awful.
Theta backed up from the smell too. "Whoa! Hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!" He waved the smell away and picked up the empty cardboard box. "Iron residue. Blimey! That takes some doing!" He turned the box around, impressed. "Just to snatch a living organism out of space/time. This baby is just like…" He put on a rough accent, "I'm 'avin' some of that.'' He switched back to his normal voice as he beamed, "I'm impressed."
"So, they are being teleported?" I pointed out, letting go of my nose.
He nodded. "It can harness huge reserves of ionic power. We need to find the source of that power." I nodded in agreement as he looked around. "Find the source and you will find…whatever has taken to stealing children and fluffy animals. Split up again?"
"Yeah, we'll cover ground better that way." I gave him the same answer as before. "And I'll be careful." I added, knowing he was going to ask me.
"Good." He kissed the back of my hand before he pulled it away. I grabbed his hand again though to tell him what I was going to tell him when he ran off the last time.
"Don't get into any trouble."
He flashed me a charming grin. "Of course not!" he reassured, kissing my forehead. "Keep your eyes peeled, Soph."
"Got it." And once again, we went our separate ways but of course, we would always find our way back to one another.
