Quick note, I saw that some people still have questions for me, especially MasterofSouls. To MasterfSouls, I'm sorry I didn't answer or address what you brought up last time, but I'm not ignoring you. All your questions should be answered in this chapter.
Chapter 16: Peace
Dozens of airships were landing in Mantle, which had been cleared of Grimm. The ones that successfully evacuated before Salem's attack dropped off the citizens in a safe zone in Atlas and returned to Mantle. Now was the time to rebuild.
Soldiers and Atlesian robots were helping the surviving citizens clear the debris and...take care of the dead. A memorial service would be held once the situation was under control.
An airship dropped off Ironwood, Ruby, and the Mandalorian. Looking around, they saw the Ace-Ops and Qrow run to the airship carrying Clover. Weiss, Blake, and Yang handed off Mercury and Emerald to two soldiers, who placed them on a prison transport. They would be joining Tyrian and Watts.
Yang turned around to see the group walking up to them. Weiss and Blake turned around as the three stopped in front of them. Ruby looked at everyone and smiled.
"We did it." she told them.
Everyone smiled at this and ran to hug Ruby. As they embraced each other, they were all laughing and crying. Blake suddenly looked up. "Where are the others?"
Djarin spoke. "Penny is helping clear out the remaining Grimm. Your friends...they're being hospitalized." Everyone looked up at this.
"They'll be fine." Ironwood said. "You should go see them. I'll call an airship to get you."
Djarin turned to Ironwood. "Can you call one for me? I need to go to the tundra."
"The tundra?" Ironwood asked. "Why do you...oh. Of course."
Two airships landed near them. Team RWBY walked up to the one on the left and Djarin went right.
"Thank you General." he said. Before he got on, Ironwood stopped him.
"General...is what everyone else calls me. To you...it's James." he said with an extended hand. Djarin shook it and walked to the ship.
"Uhhh..." a girl slowly started to wake up. Looking around, she saw that she was in a hospital. Her head suddenly throbbed and she grabbed it. However, her right hand felt cold. Looking at it, she saw that it was made entirely of metal.
"Wha...what happened?" she said.
Hearing this caused a familiar man in armor to walk in.
"Hey Neo." he said.
Djarin had found the Razor Crest in the tundra. It would need repairs for a few days, especially one of the engines. Atlas engineers would take time figuring out how to make the ship fly properly, but analyzing the surviving engine would help. But Djarin was only concerned about Neo. He found her lying a few feet from the ship, a Sabyr near her. He killed it quickly, but it unfortunately took Neo's arm. Djarin wasted no time as he bandaged her arm and head with supplies from the ship. The doctors would have to do the rest.
"Hey...Mando." Neo said slowly, still waking up. "What...happened?"
"I found you in the tundra. I couldn't save your arm, but I was able to bring you here."
"I... I don't remember much." Neo said. "Did...did it work? Did I help save Atlas?"
"Actually, you doomed us all."
"WHAT?!" she quickly rose from bed, but the Mandalorian gave a soft laugh.
"I'm kidding." he said. "Of course it worked. Thanks to you, Salem was taken care of faster."
"Don't scare me like that." she quickly laughed and laid back down. "How's everyone doing?"
"Team RWBY's fine. They're with Team JNPR and Oscar." he replied. "Salem found them after they took care of Cinder, but they'll be fine. As for the little guy..." he opened a sack he was wearing and took the Child out "...he's been wanting to see you."
Neo's eyes widened and she smiled. "Hey there." she said to the Child cradling him. "I missed you."
"...I'm sorry Neo."
Neo looked up. "Don't be. I knew what I was doing."
"What do you remember?" he asked her.
"Only a bunch of guys in white armor chasing me." she replied. "I managed to put that bomb in the crib, and it exploded. Sorry about the pod."
"Not as sorry as you'll be for my ship."
"Why, what happened to...oh. That bad huh?"
"Yep."
"Sorry, I-OW!" she felt the Mandalorian pinch her arm.
"Okay, we're even." he said. Djarin saw a message pop up in his helmet. It was from Ironwood.
"Come to my office. Bring the Child."
"Everything okay?" Neo asked him.
"Yeah, Ironwood wants to see me." he replied. "I gotta take him with me though."
"Okay." Neo handed him the Child. "Talk to you later."
As Djarin walked out, he told Team RWBY that Neo was awake. They rushed in to see how she was doing.
As Djarin came out of the elevator, he saw two guards outside Ironwood's office. Walking inside, he saw Ironwood with Robyn. Ironwood had been released from medical care, his burnt arm having been replaced with a metal one.
"What's going on?" he asked.
"Councilwoman Hill has something to give you." Ironwood replied.
Robyn walked up to him. "This was well earned." she said as she dropped her armor to the floor. "A promise is a promise."
"Thank you." he asked.
"Thank you." Robyn said as she extended her hand. "We wouldn't be standing here if it wasn't for your help."
"My pleasure." Djarin replied and shook her hand. With that, she began to walk out of the office.
"Oh, one more thing." Robyn said. 'If you see your people again, tell them I wasn't the one who broke that." she pointed to the dented armor. She left the office.
"She's not wrong, you know." Djarin turned to face Ironwood. "You saved us all."
"General, I-"
"James." Ironwood reminded him with a smile.
"James..." Djarin continued. "I wouldn't say that was the case."
"I disagree." Ironwood said as he walked to his desk. "You, Ruby, and the others stopped me from doing something I would regret for the rest of my life. And I will forever be grateful. And I think..." he pulled out the Relic of Knowledge from his desk "...it's time for you to be rewarded."
"The Lamp." Djarin said. He had forgotten all about it. The original reason he came to Remnant. His last hope to complete his quest. "You mean...?"
"Yes." Ironwood asked. "Ask your question. I have two guards outside to make sure nobody will disturb you." With that, he handed Djarin the Lamp and walked out.
"Thank you." Djarin said.
"Thank you." Ironwood said as he walked out and closed the door.
Djarin looked down at the Lamp. Remembering what the Mystic from Ryloth told him, he was ready. "Jinn."
Suddenly, the Lamp floated out of his hands. It started to let out a cloud of blue smoke and the cloud grew larger. It then began to take form, as golden chains started to wrap around it. Then, the form became more human, as two legs, two arms, a head with pointed ears and black hair appeared. A blue woman stretched her arm and let out a short laugh.
"Greetings, Mandalorian." she said with a smile. "Tell me...what knowledge do you seek?"
Djarin looked to the satchel he was wearing and took the Child out. Looking at the spirit, Djarin showed her the Child and asked his question.
"I've been quested to reunite this Child with his kind. A race of sorcerers called 'Jedi'. Where can I find them?"
Suddenly, Ironwood's office turned white and Jinn disappeared. Looking around, Djarin could only see white. Then a voice called out to him.
"There are two Jedi that I know of." Jinn said. The surroundings turned into an office with a woman with brown hair sitting down, talking to a man wearing a robe.
"The first is known to spend time with his sister on Coruscant, Princess Leia Organa. His name is Luke Skywalker, a Jedi Knight. Skywalker roams the galaxy from place to place, seeking Force-sensitives and to rebuild the Jedi Order. His sister will tell him of the Child, and he will come."
The surroundings suddenly changed again, turning into a large forest. A woman in a gray robe was sitting in the middle meditating.
"The second resides in the city of Calodan on the forest planet of Corvus. Her name is Ahsoka Tano, a survivor of the Great Jedi Purge. She knows much of the Force, possibly as much as the God of Light."
With that the surroundings changed back into Ironwood's office. Djarin looked up a Jinn.
"The two are wise beyond their years, and will take good care of the Child."
"...Thank you." Djarin said.
"Safe travels, Mandalorian." Jinn said as she began to disappear. "May the Force be with you."
The days that followed were filled with recovery for Atlas and Mantle. There was much rebuilding to be done. As for the ones who saved both cities, they were in need of recovery as well. Physically, emotionally, and mentally, everyone was scarred. At the moment, Ruby was sitting in Oscar's hospital room, who had a broken leg from Salem.
"Thanks for the coffee Ruby." Oscar said, referring to the fact that Ruby brought in a cup of coffee for him.
"Yeah, no problem." she replied, finishing a cup she brought in for herself. "So, how are you holding up?"
"I was about to ask you the same thing."
"What do you mean?" Ruby asked.
"You took on Salem. Alone. How are you doing?"
"Oh...that. It was...yeah it was nothing."
"Ruby, you were face-to-face with an immortal Grimm witch. She could've killed you in the blink of an eye. So, please, be honest. How are you holding up?"
"To be honest...I was scared." Ruby said. "It was just me and her. If I slipped up in any way, Salem could have escaped and killed everyone."
"I'm sorry we burdened you with that." Oscar put a hand on hers. "We could have told Mando to do it."
"No, it had be me." Ruby said. "I don't regret doing it. I'm just glad I was able to save everyone. But..."
"But what?"
"The thing I do regret...is not knowing what happened to my mother."
"What do you mean?" Oscar asked.
"Salem...knew my mother. I think she was the one who killed her."
"Oh."
"In the Vault, I made sure she couldn't hurt anyone else. But...Salem may have been the only one to know what happened to her. And...now I'll never know why I lost her."
"Ruby...did I ever tell you how my parents died?" Oscar asked. Ruby turned to him.
"There was a fire...a long time ago. I was only a baby when it happened. But learning about it still hurt. My aunt took me in and raised me as her own son. I think...I think I know that pain you're feeling."
"Did...did it ever go away?" Ruby asked.
"Well...no. Knowing they're not here still hurts."
"Oh." Ruby looked down at the floor, a sad expression on her face.
"But my aunt told me something that made me feel better. Even though you never knew her, did you still love your mother?"
Ruby looked up. "Yeah, of course."
"Then you understand that something that you loved is never lost. Your mother may be gone, and you may not know why...but don't think of it like you've lost her."
Ruby smiled and kissed Oscar. Pulling away, she looked at him and smiled. "Thank you Oscar."
Oscar smiled and blushed. Ruby leaned on him and closed her eyes. Looking at the door, Oscar saw Neo standing there with a smug grin on her face. She mouthed the words "I told you so."
Yang was sitting in a room looking at a picture of Team RWBY at Beacon. She was thinking about how much changed between them. Some for the best, some for the worst. Strangely, she didn't regret the bad of it all. She thought about how it made everyone stronger and better people at the end.
Yang heard the door open but didn't look up.
"Hey Ruby. What's up?"
No response. Yang looked up to see the Mandalorian and Neo staring at her, his arms crossed.
"Oh...Mando. Did you need something?"
He still stared at her, saying nothing.
"Okay, I know why you guys are here." Yang sat up. "Yeah, Blake and I told Robyn about Amity. But Robyn was on our side. She always was."
Djarin still said nothing.
"Look, I don't know why you care. You wouldn't hear us out, so we did what we had to do. And it worked out in the end."
Djarin still stared at her. Now Yang was starting to get angry.
"Okay, tell you what. Name one thing, ONE THING I did wrong. I didn't tell you because you didn't care, I didn't tell Ironwood because he would still have arrested her, and look where we are! So go ahead, impress me! What was my big mistake?!"
This time, Djarin spoke.
"You didn't tell Ruby."
Yang's confidence went away as quickly as it came. "Well...I-"
"You're right, Ironwood and I wouldn't listen. But you could have told Ruby, you could have told your friends. You had your own team to weigh in on the situation, but no. You went and did your own thing."
Yang looked down to the ground, knowing he had a point.
"You trust them, don't you?" Neo asked.
Yang looked at him. "Of course."
"I disagree. You didn't trust them enough to talk to them, let them know what the best thing to do would be." Djarin argued.
"You know that's not true." Yang angrily said.
"What I do know is that you willingly went behind their backs. Ruby's your sister, I'm sure she would forgive you. But if I were her, that would be a different story."
Yang looked down again, knowing she had been defeated. Djarin put his hand on her shoulder.
"You're not wrong, telling Robyn allowed her and Ironwood to clear the air. But it could have been a lot worse."
"Yeah..." Yang agreed.
"A warrior seeks strength in numbers, Yang. This is the Way." Djarin said.
"Next time, don't rely on just your girlfriend. Let everyone else in the loop." Neo said.
"Oh...Blake and I aren't dating." Yang said.
"Yeah, and I'm the queen of the world." Neo said sarcastically as she and Djarin walked out.
"Okay, now take the red wire out." Djarin called to the Child.
Djarin had decided to help with the ship's repairs, and needed the Child to fit in a small crawlspace to move wires. The Child was looking at a blue wire.
"No, the red one." Djarin called out.
This time, the Child managed to pull out the red wire.
"Okay, good. Now take the blue wire and put it in where the red wire was."
The Child was looking at the two wires in his hands.
"No, don't touch them. They're oppositely charged, be careful."
The Child moved them closer together.
"No, don't-" Djarin stopped talking as the wires touched and gave the Child a shock. Smoke filled the crawlspace.
"...Worth a shot." Djarin said. "You okay?"
The Child wasn't hurt too badly.
"Hey Mando." Djarin turned around to see Neo standing at the door.
"Neo. What's going on?"
"We'll be starting soon."
"...I'm on my way."
Atlas had finished Amity Tower and managed to send a message out to the rest of the world. Ironwood invited each kingdom's council to Atlas and with Robyn's help, he told the world what happened. After hearing this, each council did everything in their power to help rebuild Atlas and Mantle. They made good work, and Ironwood was finally ready to give a memorial service for those who died in the battle of Atlas. Outside Atlas Academy was a memorial wall to all who died in Mantle and Atlas. Every civilian and soldier was on the wall. RWBY, JNPR, the Ace-Ops, Neo, Qrow, the remaining Happy Huntresses, each council, and the Mandalorian were listening as Ironwood gave a speech.
"In war...there are always casualties. Before this battle began, I swore...that I would sacrifice whatever it took to stopping Salem. Standing here, at this memorial and in front of you all...makes me wish I could take that back. I look at this memorial, and see what our victory has cost us. Some of these lives were sacrificed, most were taken by force. If I had a chance to go back and save them all...I would. But all I can do now, is fix what Salem has broken. What I have broken: your trust. Your trust that Atlas will do anything it can to fix the world and make sure this peace will be everlasting. With the help of our proper newest member of the Atlas council, we will make this dream a reality." Everyone applauded as Robyn walked up the stage and shook Ironwood's hand.
After the speech was over, most of the audience left. A few stayed, looking at the memorial. One of them was Qrow, who was looking at one name in particular.
Clover Ebi.
A part of Qrow was telling him that this was his fault, that his Semblance caused Hazel to attack Clover. However, another part said he shouldn't blame himself, like what Ruby told him back in Argus (before the Mandalorian arrived). However, he was having trouble figuring out which voice to listen to.
A hand on his shoulder and a voice answered for him.
"Don't blame yourself." he turned to see Robyn with a sympathetic look on her face. "I'm sorry about Clover."
"I'm sorry about Joanna and Fiona."
They stared at the wall in silence, remembering their friends and their sacrifice.
"How's it looking, Doctor?"
"From what we've seen here, everything's fine here."
General Ironwood and Doctor Polendina were staring at the frozen Vault door, with multiple guards on the bridge setting up equipment. Not wanting to take any chances, Ironwood made the Vault a place of maximum security.
"We've studied the door, and it's pure ice. And as far as we can tell, there's nothing on the other side causing it to melt or shatter."
"And the Relics?" Ironwood asked.
"Both are safe in Amity." Pietro replied. "The Atlesian knights working up there will protect the Staff and Lamp while keeping Amity up in the sky."
"Then why do you look worried?"
Pietro looked up at Ironwood and sighed.
"We have everything all sorted out here, but there is one thing I'm concerned about."
Pietro and Ironwood took the elevator back to the Academy and walked to Pietro's Atlas laboratory. Pressing a button, Pietro opened a window to a room that was thirty degrees below freezing. In the middle of it was a body in ice.
"Cinder Fall." Ironwood deduced.
"Yes." Pietro confirmed. "Penny told me what happened and I took a look at her myself. She seems to have frozen Cinder's entire body. The ice is so hard we couldn't get a sample off it to study."
"Why is that bothering you?" Ironwood asked.
"I don't mind that we can't study Cinder's ice. I care about the fact she's still alive."
Ironwood looked back at him. "Alive?"
"Take a look." Pietro put a camera to the glass and showed Ironwood. It was an infrared camera, capable of seeing heat.
"This room is thirty degrees below freezing. Yet there's still a source of heat in Cinder's body. Apparently it's not strong enough to break the ice. Not yet, anyway."
"I can't believe it." Ironwood said. Obviously, the power of two Maidens was keeping Cinder alive. However, rather than seeing that she had lost and giving up, Cinder continued to live on.
"What...horrible will could keep a monster like her alive?"
Djarin was asleep with the Child in the Razor Crest, having worked enough for the day. He felt a light come into his eyes, as he slowly opened them.
"Morning already?" he said to himself. But as he looked around, he realized it wasn't daylight that woke him up. His surroundings were completely white, just like when Jinn showed him where the remaining Jedi were. He looked around, seeing nothing but white.
"Din Djarin." a deep voice called out to him. Turning around, the Mandalorian came face to face with a large golden dragon, floating in the air. He reached for his blaster, but looked down to see it wasn't there.
"Do not be afraid." the voice changed tone as the dragon changed into a golden, faceless man with antlers on his head. "I mean you no harm."
"Wait." Djarin said. He recognized the voice. "You...you led me here. You're the voice that told me where to find Tae Dez."
"Yes. I told you he could lead you to the knowledge you sought."
"Who are you?"
"I am the God of Light."
"Jinn...she mentioned you." the Mandalorian recalled. "She said you knew of...the Force."
"I do." he replied. "I...am a part of it. The Light side, to be exact."
"Why did you bring me here?" Djarin asked.
"To thank you." the God of Light replied. "This world, was a beautiful experiment. But, thanks to Salem and my brother, it has become a remnant of what it once was."
"Your brother...I learned...that he killed everyone on this world. And you let it happen."
"One of my deepest regrets. After that, we expanded across the galaxy, creating life on other planets. But this time...we agreed not to take an active role in shaping the destinies of living beings. There are those who seek power for peace, others for their own ends. We've come to accept this as a constant factor in life."
"Salem taught you that."
"Yes. We learned from our failure on Remnant. But a part of me always wished to come back, to see its people prosper again. Now, thanks to you, it can begin again."
"But you tried that before. With Ozma."
"Yes. I took an active role in his destiny, but that has led to a fate worse than death. It has broken him, he is no longer the hero he once was. I influenced you...in a more subtle way."
"I see."
The God of Light gave a soft laugh. "You're taking this remarkably well."
"You told me where I could find the Relic of Knowledge. Without your help, I wouldn't be where I am today. It seems...I am in your debt."
"You are welcome." the God of Light replied.
"Your world will rebuild, and it may become what it once was. But...what will happen with Ozma and Salem?" Djarin asked.
"Ozma...will no longer be bound to another soul. A warrior deserves rest, once it has fought and died with honor."
"This is the Way." Djarin responded.
"As for Salem, I do not know what will happen to her. It seems...she refuses to learn from each failure."
"And each new one brings more suffering." Djarin pointed out.
"It seems...she is quite the paradox." the God of Light said. "I will cross that bridge once I come to it. For now, it is time for you to go. Thank you, Mandalorian. And remember, the Force will be with you. Always."
The Razor Crest was finally repaired. It was time for Djarin to find the Jedi. Neo was standing in front of his ship alone.
"So you're leaving, huh?"
"Yes." Djarin replied. "It's time to find the Jedi."
"Yeah...and I gotta find something to do."
"I thought you said you had business to take care of once this was over?"
"I did." Neo replied, turning around. "But...the past few weeks have been a real gamechanger. I...don't think I want to go back to that."
"Then...what are you going to do?"
"I don't know. I guess I'm still trying to find myself."
Djarin had an idea. "You could always..."
Neo faced him. "What?"
"...come with us."
"Wait, what?" she asked.
"The kid could use a babysitter on the way there." he handed her the Child. "And something tells me you'll fit in out there." he held her shoulder and pointed to the sky. "A Mandalorian and a deadly assassin. Either stopping trouble or causing it. Sometimes a little bit of both."
Neo smiled at this possibility. She looked at him and gave her answer.
"Mando...you're one of the best friends I've made and you're one of the best people I've worked with. And that's saying a lot, because wherever I went, I was always working with, and sometimes under, someone. At home, it was at my parents' family business. In Vale, it was Roman. In Mistral, it was you and Cinder. And now, it was everyone here. Ruby, Ironwood, you. But...all this time, working with others and fighting at their side...it's made it hard to think of who I am. I was always helping others, and sometimes that meant doing things I'm no longer proud of. But...I never got the chance to find my own path. And I think it might be here, in Atlas." she turned back to him. "I want to make a difference here."
"...Are you sure?"
"Yeah." Neo said. "I appreciate the offer, but I'm gonna have to turn it down." She looked down at the Child as he hugged her, not wanting to leave. "Sorry, little guy. But I'll be thinking about you."
"What are you going to do?" Djarin asked.
"Well, first off I'm going to see how my family's doing. With everything the world's learned about Salem, I should let them know I'm okay. After that, I have a good idea." She handed the Child back to Djarin, and then hugged him. "Goodbye, Mando. Thanks for everything. I hope we meet again."
Djarin returned her hug. "My pleasure, Neo. And so do I."
RWBY, JNPR, Ironwood, and the Ace Ops were all walking up to the Razor Crest. Neo walked away and waved back at the Mandalorian.
"So, you're leaving?" Ruby asked.
"Yes." Djarin replied. "The Crest is fixed, and I know where to take the kid."
"Before you go, we have something for you." Ironwood handed him a wooden box. Inside was a golden medal, a star with a white dot in the middle.
"The Star of Fortitude, the highest honor I can bestow on any soldier."
"Thank you." Djarin replied.
"If you need anything, come to us. The Atlesian Military will answer your call."
"And so will Team RWBY." Ruby included.
"And Team JNPR." Jaune included.
"...And the Winter Maiden." Penny spoke up.
"Truly...it's been my pleasure." Djarin replied.
Ruby walked up to him and extended a hand. "Goodbye Mando."
Djarin took it and shook. "Goodbye Ruby Rose."
Looking in his palm, he saw a silver rose. The same one Ruby used to wear. He looked at her.
"That was always my lucky charm at Beacon. With where you're going, a little luck wouldn't hurt."
Djarin smiled under his helmet. "Thank you."
With that, he boarded the Razor Crest and took it off the ground. And flew into space.
Djarin looked at the Child. And looked at the silver rose Ruby gave to him.
"I...don't know when I'll be seeing you again, once we go our separate ways." he said to the Child. "Why don't you hold onto this?" he handed the rose to the Child. "I think you'll need it more than I do, with where you're going." the Child looked down at it and looked at the Mandalorian.
"Thank you." he said.
"...You're welcome." With that, the Mandalorian put the Razor Crest into hyperspace, ready to take on whatever the galaxy threw at him.
Author's notes: well, this is it. The end of my main story of Mandalorian Remnants. I want to thank everyone who read, favorited, followed, and reviewed this. Mandalorian Remnants was my first story here, and I think it's safe to say it's a success. To thank you all, I have a few surprises for you:
First off, I saw that some of the reviews are mostly questions about the lore of RWBY and Star Wars. I tried to combine them and answer some questions in this chapter. But, I know there may be more questions. So, in the coming days, I will be posting a "story" that's a Q & A for me and the story. You can ask me anything by leaving a "review" for each "chapter" and I'll answer it as best as I can.
Secondly, I had some ideas for this story that I either thought off too late or I didn't think would flow in a good way. But, I really liked those ideas. So, I will be posting some "deleted scenes" for Mandalorian Remnants as well.
Lastly, I know some people will be asking about Moff Gideon and where I left him off and his plans for Remnant. So, I will be doing one last hurrah and posting a long chapter (my longest one yet) about the Mandalorian, Remnant, and Gideon. Consider it my Christmas present for you all (for those who don't celebrate Christmas, I still want to give you a present for being fans of Mandalorian Remnants). I have a good feeling you'll like what I have planned. Just so you know, it's going to be my longest one, so it may take a while. But it will be ready before December's over.
Anyways, that's all I have to say. Please let me know what you think of this chapter, the story as a whole, and my future plans. Thank you everyone!
(Also, thank you for the comments on Chapter 15, I liked what you all had to say).
