Something You've Read Before
Chapter Eighteen
Earlier, Later
Mikan exposed herself to the remaining rays of sunshine as she waited in front of the dress shop for Serina's wedding gown fitting. The shop was not flamboyant in any way, only painted in white and golden stripes, and stood between other designer's studios with much more extravagant decorations. If not for the sign and the map on her phone, Mikan would be lost. At least three wedding gowns were displayed in the shop, owning intricate designs fitted for any type of wedding, causing Mikan to count how much work was put into making one dress. There were a few customers inside, their time spent on choosing from the already-made dresses, browsing catalogues, taking their measurements, and fitting the final product. The current time was the busiest as it was after office hours, the time where majority of the clients could pay a visit.
Being a little early saved Mikan from the possible rant of Serina and the rush hour traffic and crowding. Her soon to be Mom was particular about punctuality which sometimes changed her mood from being irritated to forgiving. If you were late, face the consequences but if you came early, then at least, you managed to be on Serina's good side. Mikan still perspired from the running she did, making her realize that she still had the stamina to be on marathon. Having that in mind, Mikan grimaced to the fact that she failed to perform her duties as a Track & Field member. All her promises to attend practice, to give it her best, be one with the team, and many more only burnt to ashes. She certainly was more invested in helping the Student Council than sports. Shuddering from that fact, Mikan had no choice but to face their captain soon.
In Alice Academy, the Student Council and the biggest club of all which composed of many clubs, the Sports Club, were two existing entities that failed to recognize each other. No one knew if it was tradition for academics to hate on athletics and vice versa but in this school, it always happened. Being such a huge club with a lot of members, the Sports Club became the voice of the remaining small clubs. They knew that the Student Council would always pay attention if a big amount of students contradict their decisions. Mikan was in both ends of the spectrum and that was what she felt exactly on that moment. She wanted to support her father for the wedding but also vying to avoid Serina. Her decisions cause her to stand on opposing sides which reflected how poor her choices had been. It showed no consistency if one looked from the outside but for Mikan, it was just her taking the opportunity to use her talent as many times as she could.
"You're early." The voice was low in tone, commanding. It definitely was her.
Mikan refrained from observing the passerby's way of walking and focused on the person who called her attention. "I wouldn't want you waiting," Mikan replied, trying to give her sincerest smile and when she took a careful look to her Mom, she said, "Hello, Serina. How was your trip?"
There beside Narumi was Serina Yamada. Her rose gold hair was below her shoulders, still petite like the last time Mikan saw her but this time Serina seemed to develop a more age-appropriate taste in fashion with her high-waisted pleated mustard skirt and white flowy blouse just to match the weather. Even in flats, Serina was almost Narumi's height which made them looked good together. Serina had no warm reaction from Mikan's question and before Narumi answered for her, she pointed at the door, obvious that it was time for them to meet the designer.
"Mikoto only has an hour to accommodate us. Let's get going, shall we?"
Mikan nodded and signaled them to go first. "Yes, we should go inside."
Upon their entrance, Mikoto greeted them. She was the one assisting the customers earlier in the fitting based on Mikan's observation. They sat on the couch that could fit four people but Mikan chose to sit on the solo chair. She made a brief eye contact with Narumi to tell him she was fine. The former classmates greeted each other with a smile which showed they were indeed close friends. Mikoto asked the couple to stand up and she examined them in 360 degrees fashion. A few comments and they finally went to measurements.
Mikoto suggested to try on what they had on the store for inspiration and they took the design from there. Initially, Serina was undecided with the motif of the wedding until she and Narumi settled in a classic, simple wedding. To be basic was the original plan anyway. Mikan saw the gleam on the couple's eyes, an evidence that they were happy with the reality that their plans were finally started. Mikan did not talk for a while and settled in nonverbal cues if she agreed to the idea or not. Truthfully, Serina did not care about her opinion but Narumi was well-versed to know that his daughter's opinion mattered. Another circumstance where Mikan stood on opposite ends. Mikan only sighed when no one looked.
The beauty of Serina flowed with every dress she tried on, Mikan must admit. Looking regal and respected were already descriptions of Serina but wearing a white dress made her more ethereal. Serina was a good person if Mikan looked beyond the way she treated her. If not for the situation between them, they might had been close. Serina was friendly and cheerful when talking to Narumi or even to her friends. She also supported her family without any complain. Serina only changed her demeanor when facing the people she disliked. The bride to be was fun to watch but Mikan had more enjoyment watching Narumi participating in choosing the colors, giving his opinion, describing his own wedding. It was not the bride's sole right to be excited, after all, the groom was to be wed also.
After five dresses, Serina settled on the globular seat on the wide fitting room surrounded with mirrors. She scanned bridal magazines and took down notes on bridal fairs to be held. Mikoto approached her with a catalogue in her hands. Mikoto explained the meaning of each fabric, the cons and pros, the consequences and advantages of using a certain bead, stone, jewel, or sequin on the gown. Lots of considerations were explained which sounded trivial and complicated at the same time. Serina took her time to process the information and called back Mikoto.
"We love the simplicity of it and I didn't know that there many shades of white."
Mikoto made a thin smile, placing hands on her chest. "That's what I'm here for," she assured and gazed at Mikan who was waiting for Narumi to finish fitting, "I didn't know that you already have a daughter. I mean she's so grown up."
Serina's eyes stayed on the catalogue. "Oh, she's not mine, Mikoto."
Mikan heard that. Even if it was the truth, the way it got out of Serina's mouth still made her uncomfortable. She suddenly prayed for this to end but then there was dinner. Still no escape from the verbal hostility from her future mother.
"Oh," Mikoto managed to reply, noticing that Serina was uninterested in elaborating the topic before turning her full attention to the groom, "Narumi looks dashing on that suit!"
Narumi's long blonde, wavy hair and fair skin matched the charcoal suit perfectly. He got out of the dressing room with a worried smile. Mikan then tied Narumi's hair into a small bun to fully view how the suit coordinated with the features of his face. Narumi looked himself into the mirrors surrounding the room. He imagined wearing the suit on his wedding day and suddenly he regained his confidence. He only wanted to match Serina and aimed to give her the best.
"I like it very much," Serina commented, approaching Narumi to have a closer look.
Mikoto was satisfied on the look of her customers. "Well, maroon and navy blue are in for the past years. Black is a classic but I guess this color can still give justice to your wedding theme. I guess you can start choosing from there."
After that brief magical moment, the couple went on to discuss the entourage's color and design. It was strange for Mikan to be trying on gown after gown and since Serina had no choice on whom to base the color, she settled for Mikan's presence. Today was only the first meeting and did not find the urge to take things faster. They agreed to communicate by e-mail and finalized the draft they had, making sure it was all to everyone's satisfaction while remaining budget-friendly. There were still many months before the wedding but preparations should be always on point to avoid delays and future problems. Serina liked to stick on schedule and more of a perfectionist when organizing an event.
"Done already?" Narumi asked the girls. "Let's go home."
Mikan concentrated on the outside surroundings as they travelled home through car. Her hands crumpled her skirt all throughout as her mind counted the kilometers away from home. The anxiety was not gone at all even if she trusted Narumi with all her life. She noticed the extra care Narumi took in every turn and brake and Mikan appreciated that a lot.
"Narumi told me you'll be going on a school trip tomorrow."
Mikan gulped, now noting that Abba was playing on the radio. "Uhmm, yeah."
"I hope you will take care of yourself and won't cause any problems."
Mikan bitterly smiled. "I solemnly promise that I won't. Thanks for the concern."
"I just don't want us to wake up in the middle of the night again searching for you. We have so much to think these days."
Serina referred to Mikan's first month in Tokyo wherein Narumi announced that they will permanently be residing in the big city. Mikan found the permanent move hard to accept at first because going away meant that her chances of winning back Izumi downgraded. Narumi explained many times, trying to comfort and reassure Mikan but to no avail. That was also the day she first saw Serina. They said first impressions last and boy, how true that remark was to them. No matter how behaved or matured Mikan came to be, Serina always had that terrible night in her mind to picture her.
"I know." It was a promise Mikan meant to keep.
Narumi barged in to the conversation. "She's a big girl now. I trust her enough."
"You trust her too much."
Narumi looked at the back seat to give Mikan a reassuring smile. "Why not then?"
Sleep was hard to find last night for Mikan. Aside from rearranging her things for the trip at least twice, she repeatedly stood in front of her mirror practicing self-help and encouragement, saying to herself that she could survive this one big task without disturbing anybody. The lights weren't out of the Sakura household until midnight and even then Mikan knew that her father and Serina did nor retire to bed maybe after catching up a bit and discussing their future family. When Mikan rose up to bed through her three a.m. alarm, Narumi was also up in the kitchen preparing her breakfast. She received a few advices and reminders before hugging her father tight. Narumi was worried, no one could take that away from him, but he made a choice to trust Mikan and to Mikan he trusted.
Mikan did not see Serina until she was midway to the door. The Mom bid her goodbye in a quiet tone and proceeded to greet Narumi a good morning. Maybe Serina was still adjusting to the different time zone. All the pleasantries was done and Mikan made her way to school only to be greeted by students flocking the gate, finding their names on what bus number they were in, receiving instructions from Nodacchi, and feeling excited for the weekend they spent with their friends. The assigned seats were based on friendship, Mikan immediately noted that with one look on the list. The Student Council knew how to get on the good side of the students, indeed. Mikan stood a few meters from the bus, refusing to get in until she saw everybody in. Her heavy backpack was left overlooked and she only minded to look down, making random movements to the cause of nothing.
She saw familiar faces like Sumire and Yura but they were too busy organizing the meet up and decided not to take more of their time. Fearful thoughts ran through Mikan's head like getting into an accident, engine breaking down in the middle of the road, taking the wrong turn, a flat tire, air-conditioning suddenly not working, episodes of vomiting inside the bus. Mikan took a deep breath and slapped her cheeks, snapping out of her morbid deliberations which considered to be exaggerated. She sent a text to Narumi to inform of her feelings of being dandy and at the same time, uncomfortable but she had second thoughts and only told him that she will send a text once they reached the destination. Mikan had to overcome her fears or else she forever will live with it which would be a tragedy.
Yuu greeted Mikan a good morning followed by Ruka who had a knowing smile. Today was the implementation of their simple-minded plans but nevertheless important. Natsume entered the scene, looking half-asleep and half-awake but his stance implied he was ready to take responsibility for this trip. Everybody was called to enter the bus, hence, the final roll call was done. The head count was complete but the Student Council and Nodacchi had one last meeting before they started moving. The huddle lasted only a few minutes and one by one the council members took their seats. Natsume poked Mikan's forehead when he passed by to which Mikan replied with her attempt to pinch his cheeks but to no avail. That minute action caught the attention of the rest of the council members.
"Stop squirming." Hotaru did not fail to observe Mikan's agitation.
Seated by the window, Mikan put a hand over her chest. "My heart is racing, Hotaru. I mean I'm riding a bus!"
"Which is perfectly normal."
Mikan held her best friend's hand and made a plea. "Don't go anywhere. I might puke in here."
Hotaru rolled her eyes. "Tell me when you do so I could switch seats."
"You're so mean sometimes."
Hotaru chuckled lightly. "Let's have fun, Mikan."
The statement somehow put Mikan into the beds of safety, saying one last prayer before the bus took off. It was irrational from the surface, her phobia of riding cars or any automobile. Mikan avoided it as long as she could and walking became her replacement. With this, she never got out of Tokyo or experienced the rides on an amusement park. Mikan always felt as if an accident was brewing as long as she was inside a car. The accident she got as a child was a tragic one. It did not turn out well and some lives were lost, worse, the living was considered dead. Mikan caught her breath she did not notice she was holding, her fingers tracing the dried droplets on the window. Today was a sunny day she could tell, roads were dried, and rain had not come for a while. The sun slowly rose which showed clear skies and the flatlands were covered in mist.
Mikan missed the feeling of being in a road trip. On the back side of the bus, students were playing music, laughing, and chattering. She peeked on the driver who was very concentrated on the road. Anna offered her snacks multiple times but she refused it with the fear of puking it when her anxiety attacked. Being on the edge at all times was tiring and letting it all loose was still a debate for her. Hotaru asked her if she was alright and though she was far from being perfect, the feeling was manageable. They passed through many uphill and downhill roads and Mikan only closed her eyes during those times, laughing at herself occasionally. Still, she was proud of herself for making this decision. So far, so good. Mikan slowly adapted to the maneuvers of the bus and with the confidence she tried to build for years, she was certain to survive the two-day trip.
Her mind was aboard on a long train of thought until she heard her phone beeped.
Ease up, Polka. Almost there.
Mikan looked up and searched for Natsume's seat which was on the front part. He was already looking at her with knowing eyes. She nodded at him, raised her thumb, and appreciated how caring he was. Mikan felt blessed in having such supportive friends. Natsume was right though. A little less an hour after that text message, Nodacchi stood in the aisle with all the reminders they had been told before departure, and finally the bus stopped. Mikan's eyes widened, applauding herself from the inside, and hugged Hotaru briefly. In a line, they got off the bus with the head count facilitated by Yura. The checklist was complete and it was time to start the day officially.
"Had a long sleep, Yuu?" Mikan asked as she giggled at Yuu's lack of sleep state, evidenced by the dark circles under his eyes and messy hair.
Yuu was not the person who succumb to sleep easily but when he barely had rest from the day before and planned to do it during travel, he certainly could. "I was trying to reenergize for today's activities but Sumire and Koko in the back were so noisy. Seriously, they never lose energy."
They gathered in the shaded area of the huge parking lot of the hotel. Ruka double-checked all the check-in must haves with Hotaru and found no variance. They were greeted by the hotel staff and the facilitators who they worked with later on. A quick introduction between the academy and the staff and Nodacchi went on with the announcement using a megaphone.
"Good morning, Alice Academy students! I know you are all hungry and sleepy from that travel but first things first. As you all know we will start the day with activities facilitated by trained personnel of Shirahama Adventure Camp. You all have the itineraries sent to your e-mails and I trust that you've read through it. After breakfast, change into your activity clothes and let us all have fun!"
Almost everyone cheered out of excitement. The groups were announced which were chosen via fish bowl for fairness three days before. Some were happy on the team they went and some were just neutral about it. It was not winning anyways, it was all about the fun but one could not take out a competitive spirit from a natural. Each were given ribbons as an identifier to which team they belonged and formed their circle as instructed to.
"Good luck later, Ruka." Mikan bid.
Ruka scratched his head. The ribbon on his wrist told that they were not on the same team. "Thanks, Mikan. I'm so nervous."
"You can do it!" Mikan cheered and waved goodbye to her friend. Her head whipped left to right as if looking for something. In her view were hotels with acceptable distances in between. There was no building taller than 10 floors in the Shirahama coastline so not to overshadow the palm trees and the beach could still be seen in all its glory from the island road.
"Looking for someone?" Natsume stood behind her with arms crossed, hair blown by the hair which looked fantastic on his overall summery boyish look.
"I'm trying to find the beach," Mikan admitted although now she was entranced by Natsume's presence.
Natsume's good looks was always the first people noted about him and Mikan belonged to that stereotype. He had an alluring and intimidating presence and when one looked at him longer, his great mind and ability to take charge heightened. Mikan knew all of that at this time but the most superior of his characteristics was his subtle concern for people. He hovered above her due to his height, blocking the sunrays which made him sort of shine. Mikan heard his voice, freeing her from the enchantment.
"The hotel is a few meters away from the actual beach but all activities are going to be held there," Natsume answered pointing at the direction of their accommodation, "Are you okay?" he asked when he noticed Mikan's daze. He would never admit it but he worried about her the whole trip.
Mikan shook her head. "I'm fine, so far. Hey, what team are you?"
Raising his arm, he answered, "Red."
"I'm in yellow," Mikan answered casually.
There was a smirk plastered on Natsume's face. "Then, prepare to go down, Polka."
Natsume wanted to see what Mikan Sakura was capable of. Beside worrying about her, he also thought of challenging her in the games. His smirk was still there and Mikan's face was in full determination. The prize was out of the question and they both knew that this was all about their pride and the bragging rights. Natsume had an advantage being familiar with the texture of the sand, the likeness of the environment to other beaches he went to. As for Mikan, this was her first time and pictures alone could not relay to her the feeling of running in the sand and their games involved a lot of running.
He once saw her in action when they chased little Neko but that barely showed the entirety of her potential. Natsume was aware that Mikan was a stagnant member of the Sports Club but that did not faze him a bit. His true reason for the challenge was a bit unclear even to him. It seemed like he was just trying to get her attention more which was a big why in his head.
"Oh, you would rot before seeing that, Mr. Hyuuga."
Mikan laughed at him and Natsume managed to return a quaint smile. The buzzling noise of the students filled the air, youth encasing the whole resort but for now, they had to carefully choose who would represent their respective teams well. Natsume and Mikan's conversation halted because they were asked to vote for their chosen leader each but they did not join their group until later, satisfied on their current positions.
"All four teams should choose a leader and present a cheer in 15 minutes. After that the rules, guidelines, and outline of the race will be explained," Nodacchi informed the crowd. It was not long when they submitted the names of the leaders. "For Blue Team, we have Team Leader Yura Otonashi; Green Team is Hachi Satsuko; Red Team is Ruka Nogi and for the Yellow Team it will be Daichi Himura. After presenting the cheer, all teams will line up to the obstacle course built on the very shore of Shirahama Beach."
Suddenly, a person whose gait was steady, straight stance, height similar to Natsume's stood before them. Mikan was surprised that her Captain Himura approached them. Daichi was one of the many captains under the humongous Sports Club, which had the biggest retaliation for continuing this trip, and as to why Daichi joined was a blur but he surely had motives. His aura exudes manliness and strength. His fit body, perfect for the field, was a result of years of hard work and training since elementary days. Mikan already expected to receive a scolding from him. She barely passed by their club room and only saw him a few times and yet they met without difficulty here.
"Miss Sakura, I can see you're well."
Daichi's tone indicated amusement and sarcasm which did not sit well on Natsume's ears.
"Hello, Captain." Mikan's acknowledgement was cheerful.
Daichi stepped closer, eyeing Natsume for a bit, knowing full who he was, before whispering into Mikan's ear. "Maybe we can use your speed on this race, Miss Sakura, and think if you still want to pursue your membership on the Track & Field Club." He said his piece and signaled Mikan to join their line.
Mikan remained unfazed, her expression was far from worried. She examined her team for a while and turned to bid Natsume goodbye. "Well, see you later, Natsume."
Natsume only nodded, more determined to beat everyone on his way especially that Daichi Himura.
The set-up was alike of those seen on tv shows. The obstacle course started on two long, narrow lumbers then jumping to a five two-meter stands, crossing the sand with the monkey bars which were seven-feet high. They had to run a few meters to crawl on the wet sand, military style and jumping from one podium to the other to reach the goal. A member could proceed when the flag was waved at the other side. The facilitators from Adventure Camp were clad in brown khaki shorts and white blouse with their cap serving only as their sun visor. They had whistles attached on their necks and one held a starter pistol. Repeatedly, they asked them to maintain the lines and figure out who would start and end the race. Of course, the team leaders took pride and were dispatched first.
Mikan played the sands using her foot, unaware of the cheering and commotion outside her head. She was the last to go in their team thus had enough time to feel the sand. After settling at the hotel and eating their breakfast, they were only given an hour to change and prepare. Hotaru assisted her in walking to the activity area because her legs trembled. Mikan gathered all ounce of bravery in her system just to finally meet the sand, the shore, and water.
"It's so fine." Mikan mumbled under her breath.
Hotaru walked closer to where the waves last hit and spread her arms. "Mikan, welcome to the beach."
Undertow. Mikan read and seen that word a few times. It flashbacked to her upon seeing the roll of the waves and hearing it hit the stone formations and the sand. The sight bedazzled her, made her cry shortly. Her whole body trembled, not just her legs, and she knelt on the ground. This scenery before her was like a portrait that came out from that magazine she saw as a kid. People were having a great time dipping into the waters, children made sandcastles, foreigners soaked their bodies under the sun, couples walked hand in hand, some only took photos while others randomly played on the sand. It was all normal. No snow, no rain, no tears, no oil on the road, no yelling, no police and ambulance sirens. Mikan missed all of this in her lifetime.
She shook her head multiple times before Hotaru hugged her. The sea was indeed beautiful and the reason why she insisted visiting the sea on her birthday years ago was because of this paradise-like images. Mikan dreamt of shouting her worries to the sea, hoping that the waves would eat it, and return it as a positive aura. She imagined playing with Youichi in the sand using sand. Her father and mother eating under the umbrella, talking about the day. Mikan cried more, regretting the fact that nothing like that happened in her life. But, the sea was always there, serving its purpose depending on who came, and Mikan just wanted a unique birthday that time, that was the sea's purpose. Now, the sea, for her, was a dream that took too many years to reach. Mikan never saw it in actual before but she felt the connection instantly. Inside, she wanted to defend her insistence that time to go but no one cared about that now, not even her.
The sun above her made her sweat and to avoid getting attention, Mikan pulled herself up and wiped her tears. She hugged Hotaru once again and they went back to the activity area with a face half sad and half determined.
"Aaahhhh!" Mikan yelled as she finished the jump on the fences. She raced against Natsume who volunteered to be the last delegate, just to give justice to their challenge.
Natsume and Mikan started almost at the same time but after the jump on the fences, it was evident that Mikan had the lighter body, still Natsume caught up. Everyone was yelling at the top of their lungs, knowing that it was a close competition between Yellow and Red. Their co-members on the other side jumped and gestured their hands to go faster. Mikan's far from tired and so did Natsume since it was the first event of the day, their energy had yet to be wasted. Mikan sensed Natsume's speed through her peripheral vision and even though she knew she was at her fastest, still she gave more and her legs brought out the result. Jumping and swinging her body, Mikan was determined to laugh at Natsume's face at the finish line. Meanwhile, Natsume immersed himself fully between their competition, providing effort as much as Mikan, but he was having fun.
"Those two seem to be in their own world again," Anna remarked as he wiped his sweat.
Yura only nodded. "They're both competitive and they know it."
Mikan dripped in sweat, becoming aware of her lack of air but when she saw Captain Himura and the rest of her teammates only a few meters away, her resolve recovered. Soon, she reached the end of the obstacle, rolling over the sand which made her group squeal in worry but Mikan only laughed it out, feeling the victory of their accomplishment. Natsume helped her stand up. The brunette noticed Natsume's sweaty state, shorts breaths, and once again witnessed his scowling face. They both could not talk due to exhaustion but their eyes said that they enjoyed that race.
"Yellow Team won!" the facilitator announced.
"Damn you and your quick legs," Natsume said in between breaths.
Mikan took one deep breath. "That was so tiring!"
"Sakura! Volleyball next." It was Captain Himura looking impatient.
After the winning team cheered, everyone regrouped and chose the players for the next event. Although the obstacle course required lots of physical strength, Mikan still felt energetic and felt like she was able to do another round of it. If the captain wanted her to play volleyball, then she would. This was also good practice for her ever since she neglected the track team. So far, she was doing well but it was still early to tell.
"Coming!" Mikan yelled and tapped Natsume's shoulders, unable to say anything.
Natsume was far from amused at Himura's bossy nature. He quickly grabbed a bottle at the water station and gave it to Mikan. "Polka, hydrate before you go!"
"Thanks!" Mikan then tried to catch up with her teammates who went first.
Yuu approached Natsume holding a water bottle, seemingly tired from the race. "I forgot that she is technically a member of the Sports Club, the Track Team to be exact."
If it were speed and agility, Mikan certainly was gifted with those and that was what Yuu's trying to point out. Natsume's eyes opened on Mikan's talent and why she was not fond of putting it to use. Maybe because it was Himura's attitude which turned her off but Natsume doubted because Mikan was known to adapt to any kind of person. The vibe Himura gave to Natsume was awful and he immediately felt dislike for the captain. Being one of the heads of the Sports Club did not matter to Natsume but the way Himura ordered Mikan to do this and that left a sour taste on Natsume.
"Member or not we're going to win this thing," he declared and Yuu felt fear on how cold Natsume's tone was.
The facilitators arranged the improvised court for the beach volleyball. Each leader gave detailed instructions to their mixed team of boys and girls. Three sets each game was played until the two remaining best teams competed namely: Blue and Green. It was Yura, who surprisingly, carried her team well until the finals and their winning moment. Magic sometimes happened on tournaments where non-athletic players joined while only having the sense of team spirit and encouragement it turned them from an underdog to the victorious one in the end. The teams were Mikan and Natsume belonged to were expected to compete with each other at the end but they were eliminated early even with the help of some Sports Club members. The blazing heat of the sun did nothing to tire out the raging determination of members of Blue and Green. It was like they considered beach volleyball their chance of showing off. Yura happened to be a leader of prediction and knowing who to assign to a certain task. Knowing the potential, strengths, weaknesses through observation only was a talent of Yura. Sometimes, she just knew as if she already seen the future. Satsuko of Green Team made it up with his experience as a player of the football team when it came to tactics and planning.
The volleyball tournament lasted a little over lunch time making everyone starved. That was why lunch was devoured fast and the rest of their free time, they spent on rest. For Mikan, the longer she rested, the more she could feel the exhaustion so she could not wait for the games to end. Mikan ate little food but drank lots of fluid so that she could still be lightweight when running came handy. The girls were laughing at the comedic circumstances that occurred earlier at the obstacle course.
"You were a revelation back there, Mikan," Nonoko said.
Mikan felt flattered but dismissed the praise out of humility. "Not me but Yura. I was almost scared at you back there in the field."
"I was surprised at myself, too," Yura replied.
The sun lost its peak when they came back to the field. Next was the Treasure Hunt in which Mikan was determined to win. This certain event bore the greatest percentage in determining the winner for today's competition. Mikan adjusted to the difficulty the sand gave her. The more she ran fast, the deeper her feet settled in the sand and when she exerted more effort, her breathing could not keep up. Stamina on plain ground was definitely different on a special place like this but her muscles contracting and aching was a feeling she missed. Sports was an area Mikan aced but she was not putting her talent in good use due to inconsistencies in her life. She sat on the sand, waiting for the final instructions. The time passed by quickly without her consciousness and then suddenly remembering that she forgot to update Narumi on her whereabouts and how she was doing and with this, she made a quick text.
In Mikan's peripheral vision, she noticed Ruka approached Hotaru to give her water. Ruka looked red and it was impossible for Hotaru not to notice it. Hotaru knew about Ruka's feelings, Mikan was sure of it. Mikan was almost positive that Hotaru did not dislike the guy and that they could be a match made in heaven despite being polar opposites. Mikan trusted that Hotaru would be doing the right thing when Ruka told his feelings. The good thing about Ruka Nogi was he was realistic and a gentleman. He already verbalized thoughts of being rejected to Mikan to which she confirmed to be a possibility since anything could happen and that if rejection was given, he should accept it wholeheartedly and promote friendship instead. That gesture of Ruka amazed Mikan. She had her own thoughts of prioritizing friendship over love since it lasted more and not that complicated but she also doubted her ability to keep her feelings all to herself. Mikan's vision traveled to Natsume who was already looking at her.
Mikan gulped at first but she smiled at him and waved to which Natsume replied with a small grin. His presence alone was enough for Mikan to feel safe and sound but there was a goal she had in mind and that was not to ask for Natsume's help that day. Mikan had to survive this trip without thinking of the past which was hard but at least she enjoyed. She went back to her post only to be caught up on Captain Himura's final instruction about the Treasure Hunt. Only two members represented each team so they had picked out the members who had the highest chances of winning and also extreme sense of cooperation. The first clue was given and it was up to each team to find the next until they reached the treasure. Each stop a challenge was given, similar to The Amazing Race, only milder when it came to how extreme the challenge could be. Himura picked Mikan to be his partner.
The representatives lined up at the starting point with determined looks on their faces. Natsume displayed a serious expression more than ever and since that point, Mikan knew that the little competition between them was about to end. The pistol was fired and they started running for their lives.
Sumire walked back and forth in order to organize the seats of her co-students during dinner. The crowd was large, hungry, and the food was aromatic. About 20 tables were set up which could room in about six people, just enough to share the yakiniku. The side dishes were already served and students ordered variety of non-alcoholic drinks. Some were rebellious and stupid enough to order beer and sake just to see if the waiter would allow it but strict instructions were given to them by the Student Council. The smoke from the meat filled the room, the clanks of chopsticks picking up the rice and meat added in the noise. A small stage with a speaker and microphone was set up on the center of the hall and there the awarding was done. Ruka visited each table, asking if they were having a great time and telling them not to hesitate to eat more because serving was unlimited.
Anna executed perfect cooking skills as she was assigned as the griller of the table and while doing this, Yuu made sure that she still ate enough because most of the times, the meat went to the stomach too quickly. Yura was responsible on making sure their glasses did not go empty and Nonoko did not let their food ran out of supply. It was chaos when one looked at it from the outside but it was actually organized when you were actually in the situation. Koko fetched Sumire when he noticed that everyone has found a spot and told her that she should relax for now.
"You're right!" Sumire exclaimed, "I'm so hungry, too." She had more roles on the awarding to perform but her stomach was top priority as of the moment.
"You're too busy, Sumire. Why don't you stay still for a while and eat?" Hotaru said, offering her a drink.
Natsume ate in silence, talking once in a while if he felt like to. He was not tired anymore from the running, climbing, thinking, and even the singing he did for the Treasure Hunt Challenge. He could not remember the last time he went head to head with someone in a physical competition like this and he knew his body would ache all over the next day. Everyone was present in their table except Mikan who got stuck in Himura's table. That fact actually bothered him more than it should. Take away the point that he did not have a proper conversation with Mikan or the chance to ask her if she was alright after all that, she even decided to eat with other people on a rare occasion like this. Natsume drank his glass of iced tea in one gulp, realizing his thoughts and found it unreasonable. Mikan had every right to eat to whom she wanted to eat with even if it was with that bossy Daichi Himura. Mikan's spot was three tables away from their, to Natsume's left, and also the reason why he saw them clearly.
Mikan had the ability of adapting to every kind of individual she met and shortly conversing with them as if they knew each other for a long time. She certainly was Ms. Friendship, able to say what the person wanted to hear and keep to herself what was hurtful. Himura was a pawn of the Sports Club to criticize the Student Council, Natsume liked to think but that was also a stupid notion. He was just trying to find a negative thing in this Daichi Himura although the guy did not offend him personally. Natsume must be staring intently because Ruka nudged and eyed him just as soon he got back from campaigning all the tables.
"She is fine. Don't worry," Ruka whispered.
Natsume stole a meat from Koko who wailed at the act but was not able to do anything. "Who said I'm worried?" Natsume hissed as he ate the newly-stolen grilled meat.
After a day full of activities which tired out the mind and the body, a yakiniku night was the perfect way to end it. Nodacchi's laugh engulfed at his table with the facilitators of the event and the hotel manager. In just about an hour after they started munching the delicious food, Sumire went up to the stage, testing if the mic was working.
"I know everyone is tired from all the physical and mental activities we had during the day but despite, I hope everyone is having the best time!" Sumire yelled, earning a scream from the students. "Thank you for that cheerful response, guys. Having three competitive games, the goal is to form a bond and build trust with one another even though you barely know each other. With this in mind, team work really is the key to unparalleled success. I am sure all of us learned this and gave our best but only one team emerged on the top. To present them with their prizes, our supervising teacher, Nodacchi-sensei is here to make the announcement."
Nodacchi accepted the mic while waving at his already pumped up students. "Good evening, everyone! Watching you all today made me feel young again. I can remember the days when I can clearly walk, run, and laugh like all of you. Having an award is just a cherry on top but the memories you have earned today is the real prize. Still, we must give where recognition is due and with this, congratulations to you Red Team!"
Coming second in the obstacle and first in the treasure hunt, the Red Team managed to win the games. Everyone cheered, feeling no remorse and instead feeling the sports inside them freed. They all worked hard, it just that one team worked harder. The whole team in Ruka's lead graced the stage and bowed to everyone. Natsume eyed Mikan just to tell her that he won the challenge he had offered her. Mikan only stuck her tongue out as a reaction but deep inside, she was happy for them. The awarding lasted a few minutes and Nodacchi held onto the mic again.
"Let us all proceed with our Open Mic session. Remember that this does not only pertain to singing or sharing your poems. This can also include sharing your experiences today or sharing a bit of your life. So, who would like to enlighten us first?" Nodacchi searched the crowd who turned to be silent until one raised a hand, "Oh, Tobita Yuu? Please take the stage."
Everyone watched Yuu's silent footsteps to reach the stage, his head a little low, apparently shy but brave enough to face his schoolmates. Yuu knew that after him more would follow to give this Open Mic Session a try, he was just the most determined one to be the first to hold it. Nobody knew what he was going to do and even himself had no clear plan on how to say things in his mind. Yuu scanned the crowd, grateful that their attention was on him and that relived his worries somehow. He planned to take a deep breath but settled for a shallow one before talking.
"Good evening, everyone. I am not here to sing, I don't have the talent or perform something that would feast your eyes. I just want to talk about my realizations about life up to this day. As some of you know, my Mom died this year. It certainly felt like an earthquake and fire clashing inside my heart. Just when the days are over, I realized that there are so many unsaid things between us. Things that were better said during her healthy days. I lost the chance and I still regret it now but I try to tell her every day," he paused, wondering if he made sense or this topic was not too grim for his schoolmates but when he caught Anna's smile at him, he continued, "Today, we gave it our all. We ran as fast as we could, we cheered on the top of our lungs, helped each other despite not knowing everyone's names. We all had fun because we gave it our best shot. No regrets, right?" The crowd agreed in unison. "So, if you want to say something, say it now! Do not wait for the best moment and instead think of the moment as your best shot. Thank you!"
Nothing could top that opening remark by Yuu. Soon after he exited the stage, he earned hugs from his friends and suddenly he teared up a little, touched by the support. If his Mom was watching right now, she must be proud. Yuu missed her every day and he wished that she visit him in his dreams. Yuu observed a lot of his classmates' reaction during the games. Their foreheads folded when they felt frustrated, jumping and clapping to show support on their representatives, laughed when something comedic happened, yelled as if that would make then ran faster. If a human being could show different emotions without anyone telling them then they better shout their real feelings, too.
Ruka felt like that message was meant for him even though Yuu had not the slightest idea about his plan. The students started standing up, the music hyped their reignited feelings from Yuu's message, and then the next performer went up to the stage. The atmosphere turned into a party mode and Ruka had a harder time to search for Hotaru who was talking to the staff to serve dessert.
"I like you, Hotaru Imai!" Ruka yelled.
Hotaru's ears perked up, caught off guard by the confession. The look on Ruka's face also indicated that he rushed into saying that. "You must have hit your head on the tree earlier, Nogi."
Ruka expected an initial resistance from Hotaru but he only stepped closer. The hotel staff finally noticed and gave them privacy while the students were preoccupied with the music that filled the hall. Hotaru did not move on her spot, her expression remained the same, unreadable. "I want you to give me a chance. To know you, to know me. I like you ever since… I don't actually remember but I am already feeling this for the longest time."
Hotaru was speechless for a moment until she asked, "Why me?"
"Why not?" Ruka asked, sounding a little desperate but his tone found its way to firmness, "You are a hand work, Imai. You are so hard to reach, always looking cold and emotionless and yet I find you warm. I like the way you work, the way you know things. I like that you have stable relationships with others. You idolize your brother, that much is evident, and you are always there for your friends." He paused for a while to ran a hand in his hair and gazed at the woman he liked. "Don't tell me you haven't noticed."
Hotaru was quick to reply, "Don't underestimate me, Nogi."
"I never did," Ruka admitted with a blush, "Please?"
Answers to questions were easy to find for Hotaru but there were already moments in her life wherein confusion got the best of her and she just could not think straight. She was well-aware of Ruka's feelings to her although she assumed it to be a simple crush and not the kind where he wanted them to be together as a couple. This was what Mikan tried to tell her and had been planning all along. Hotaru disregarded Ruka a lot because she knew that Mikan liked him but that appeared not to be the case anymore. Hotaru wanted to ask what happened to that supposed-to-be relationship or if they already settled things between them before confessing to her but that could wait later. Ruka waited for an answer and Hotaru meant to make him wait longer for suspense but that was cruel. When Hotaru's thoughts rearranged, she shook her head and giggled a little.
Hotaru was known to be secretive about her feelings even to her closest friends because she felt like it was not an important discussion but seeing Ruka's emotions as he conveyed his feelings made her realize that feelings were important, too. Emotions fueled our wants and desires in life. "I never liked your goody attitude nor your display of responsibility. I actually don't like how you are not straightforward on many things. You know my best friend likes you."
"Is that what's holding you back? We've already talked about it."
"I know. The way you both act is peculiar." Hotaru stated which made Ruka feel thankful. "Listen, Nogi. I cannot promise you anything but I am willing to give you this chance you are asking."
Ruka's eyes lighted up, his smile reached his ears, his heartbeat got faster. "Really? Do you mean it?"
Hotaru meant it with all her heart. She wanted him to know that she was jealous when he talked with Ruka at Glassroots as if they were the only people around, that she noticed how much effort Ruka gave for every project that they had done together, that Ruka's charm and sincerity were traits she admired the most. Hotaru tried to convey it to him but maybe next time, when he was not on cloud nine with her agreement for them to date.
"You better consider this an opportunity of a lifetime, Nogi." Hotaru warned with a smile.
"Yes!" Ruka yelled and ran to hug Hotaru who finally caught the attention of the others. The crowd was lost at first until they had an idea of the story and then all cheered for the newest power couple in Alice Academy.
So many things happened that day in Natsume's point of view. He found it hard to choose what was the highlight because too many scenarios happened in 24 hours. He walked outside to breathe some fresh air and also to find the person he had been wanting to talk to all day. Why did he crave for her presence? Why was he so worried? He sent a text to Mikan but got no reply, that annoyed him little. He had questions in his mind that only she could answer. The night was young, nobody in their right mind would tuck in to sleep this early especially if you were on a weekend getaway. Natsume figured that if Mikan was nowhere to be found, she was in some place that she longed for. Natsume walked to the path his legs led him until he saw a familiar figure, cladded in darkness from the starry night.
"Hey, Natsume." Was she a psychic? How did she know it was him? "The only logical person who could be approaching me now was no other than you," Mikan stated and looked up to him.
The waves were strong but Mikan was on a safe spot where water would not reach her. The sea was different to look at night and in high tide and the infinite darkness was creepy to stare at. The light sources that illuminated the place was from the bars and 24 hours shops lined up maybe a hundred meters from the shore. There was a patrolling lifeguard with a strong flashlight making his rounds back and forth. Natsume sat beside her. The sea breeze was always cold and fresh and Mikan was ready for that, wearing a jacket and a sarong wrap . It was Natsume who was clearly not dressed appropriately with just a mussel shirt and board shorts on.
"You were gone the moment they stopped serving food." It was meant to annoy her and he was always successful at this.
Mikan noticed Natsume's weakness to cold. "Ha ha. I actually experienced the whole thing and you're cold. You can have my sarong."
"Thanks." Natsume replied, with reluctance at first. He took a seat near Mikan whose hair danced with the wind, her face illuminated at times when she her head directed to the right. Underneath her jacket must be thin clothes because she was still chilly. Natsume wrapped the sarong over the two of them, its diameter enough to engulf them and give them warmth. "I was actually waiting for you to make a scene all day but you did not. I take it you like it here."
Mikan watched the waves, its sound music to her ears, making her feel sleepy and alive at the same time. She did her best not to stare at Natsume who was so close, she felt like one wrong turn and she would be kissing his cheek. Mikan faked a cough to clear her throat. "I questioned myself nonstop only to find the answer that this trip was worth it. I finally get to see the beach, the sea, the stars, this wind. It's beautiful, Natsume."
"But not enough to take out the guilt you feel."
Mikan smiled bitterly, her eyes drifted far from Natsume's gaze. Her tone turned quiet when she said, "If only we went an hour earlier or later, maybe we could have avoided that."
The incident Mikan talked about was still vague in Natsume's mind. He had no idea who was involved, when did it happen, how did it happen, what was the real situation. No concreteness in Mikan's words and all Natsume did was guess the whole time. Regret somehow crossed his mind for not asking Mikan further the first time she opened about the reason why she was terrified of riding cars. "Accidents happen, Polka. You cannot predict or stop them. Do not blame yourself."
Mikan squinted her eyes. "That's a cliché answer coming from you." She giggled after receiving a glare from Natsume. "I thought I have beach phobia but I did not get dizzy, vomited, nor cry. It really is just my fear that's stopping me. If I had not come, I would not have this day to remember forever. Is that also a cliché of concluding things, Natsume?"
Natsume stretched his once flexed knees, the sand dust was still visible even in the dark. "I had my fair share of blaming myself for the divorce of my parents. Thought that I was a bad child for that to happen to me. I was a kid and know nothing. It actually took a lot from me, not just my parents."
This was the first time Natsume freely talked about his past with Mikan. He trusted their friendship and was able to share her things he usually shared to his longtime friends. Taking one more look to Mikan whose expression implied that she desired to hear his story, he smirked for a while before proceeding. Despite Mikan's tendencies to pry into someone's personal problem, she was surprisingly tamed when it came to him. Natsume wondered what made him different in her eyes from the others. Maybe it was their bad start or his intimidating aura but Mikan was not the type to be bothered by that as far as he knew. The only thing Natsume noticed which bothered Mikan was when someone was angry at her and he believed there was a reason for that. Mikan made a forward-backward motion with her head to show impatience with his untold story. Those who belonged to Natsume's circle of friends knew it except her.
"Yuu told me that you were classmates with Ruka. What happened? Why did you stop for a year?"
Natsume took that as a ground to start his story. At least, she had an idea. "To put it simply, my attendance was not enough to cover the school year."
"Were you the rebel student kind? Cut classes and all that because of family problems?" Mikan was quick to follow up.
The question took back Natsume to his childhood and early teenage years. He was eighteen now and a lot happened during the course of his old life or which he liked to call it: The Life After Luna Koizumi. Just like any son of a prodigy similar to Kaoru, Natsume was brought up with the highest hopes of running the family business someday. The fact that he was the youngest did not change his predetermined future. His older sister of five years, Aoi, was already fated to any successful businessman that could rival their company or someone who was worth for the reputation of their empire. Aoi went on to that path without prejudice and Natsume had no qualms on taking the same road until everything succumbed to downfall. The turning point of his life came when Ioran asked for a divorce from Kaoru.
Kaoru and Ioran were not a match made in heaven but they clicked the first time they saw each other in that charity event. In fact, they were opposites but their families already had an agreement to pair them as a couple and eventually marry. Kaoru was the perfectionist type, strict, serious, well-mannered. The kind of woman that you saw on tv who had the qualities of a real elegant, rich lady. Ioran was charitable, open-minded, cheerful, but smart in his own way. They agreed to marry out of respect of their bloodlines. Natsume was never sure if his parents felt in love over the course of their marriage but when Ioran waited for Kaoru after late nights in the office or when Kaoru agreed to build a foundation that the two of them managed, Natsume could somehow tell that they did not exactly dislike each other. That maybe, somehow, they loved each other. There was a mutual understanding between his parents that he thought carried over their relationship as husband and wife. Natsume idolized his parents, looking at them as people who you could imitate the successes they reached in life.
But, Ioran had enough. On where Ioran felt he had enough, Natsume had no idea at first but he soon learned when he became older. Common on couples who were about to face divorce were relentless fighting and that was the daily routine of Ioran and Kaoru. They lost their common ground when Ioran fought for the freedom of Aoi and Natsume, to not follow their footsteps when it came to choosing the future. Being the traditional one, Kaoru defended her side as if they were on a debate every day. Soon, even the smallest of things, they fought over it. Ioran snapped after years of misunderstanding and lost all his will and filed for divorce. At first, Kaoru opposed greatly, fearing the tarnish it would give to their family name but Ioran was so much more than he seemed and fought his way until the end. Aoi was old enough to comprehend things and took the emotional impact with calmness but Natsume was not ready at all even after knowing all the time.
"I needed to face the presiding judge of the custody case between my parents. My conflict with Ruka and others also happened that time."
"So, the divorce happened the same time when you argued about this girl your dad mentioned?"
Luna Koizumi was Natsume and Ruka's childhood friend. She had raven hair, dough-shaped eyes, lips that could smile the sweetest. Her features came out strong but she was a sweet child in reality. Luna was a constant figure on the lives of the two boys so it was not surprising at all when they admitted they liked her at the same time. They were young and stupid at fourteen but their feelings had a touch of honesty. Natsume found a shoulder to lean on with Luna. When he talked to Luna, she just knew what to say to make him feel light. Ruka and Natsume agreed not to compromise their friendship over a girl but that statement proved to be wrong at the end. When Luna agreed to date Natsume, the friendship between the boys soured. After all, their feelings rooted from the emotions they felt since childhood. Jealousy became rampant and the two felt trust and competition would always meet.
Ruka could be intense when it came to his feelings for a girl. He made one last challenge with Natsume and dared him in a fistfight. Natsume was already busy with the custody case at this time and found the perfect medium to vent out his anger. Their fight happened and Luna broke up with him. Everything Natsume had vanished in a glimpse. He lost his best friends, his girlfriend, his parents, and his sister was acting to look strong which disgusted him. Their family drifted apart completely after that and Natsume was bitter to the world because the relationships he put effort to build, nurture, and maintain were all lost in a snap.
"I don't see you being a total jerk now," Mikan said, removing the sarong in her arms. "I guess you know who you are after all. I'm proud of you that even after all that, you're still caring, concern, honest."
Natsume blushed at her compliments but the darkness did a good job in hiding that. "You don't know what you're saying."
Mikan shook her head. "Apparently, I do. So, how did you make it up to Ruka?"
Natsume tried to reminisce for a while. The memory was becoming vague to him but still managed to remember the important points. "He went to me as a friend. We admitted that we're both idiots and promised never to do it again."
It was the simplified version of the conclusion of the event, Mikan could tell. She was finally out of the darkness regarding Natsume's story. It was indeed an open secret. There was no way that their society would not pay attention to a divorce and custody case like that. Being in the limelight was never a happy task. Mikan understood Natsume more on why he was protective of his friends because he once lost them and would do anything not to experience a loss like that again. He was more fond of his father due to Ioran's nature of being a believer of freewill and gained hatred for his Mom for destroying their family. Mikan knew how hard it was to have a broken family, more than anyone, so she hugged Natsume to comfort him.
Natsume was astonished with the action and the intention. He felt Mikan's slender arms overlapped in his back, her smell of strawberries and vanilla lingered in him, her long brunette hair was aching to be caressed. "I think everyone needs a hug once in a while," Mikan declared with her head buried on his neck and released Natsume but with the gesture, Natsume hugged her back with the same intensity. They hugged tighter as if to feel that the other person was present and would always be there. The security and beauty it have to their emotions were overpowering like they were the only people on that shore. The stars and moon witnessed their way of comforting each other which lasted for more than a minute until they mutually broke the contact.
"Ruka told his feelings to Imai. I hope you're fine."
Mikan nodded with a smile. "I am happy for them. You knew it, right? From the start? That's why you wanted me to stay away from him because I had no chance since the beginning."
"Don't flatter yourself." Natsume scoffed, "It's hard when friends like the same person. That's why friends should remain friends."
Mikan blinked. "Won't you give it a chance? What if you like her and you happen to be friends?"
Natsume started to fold the sarong, feeling the warmth of their contact from earlier. "I know better now."
"As in, never? Ever?" Mikan asked, standing up. She regretted the action because it made her look frustrated.
Natsume also rose from his seat. Their eyes were almost on the same level. "I'll think about that when I happen to like someone I am friends with."
"One day, tell me more about her. I will also tell you about my story."
Natsume wanted to protest on that because he wanted a return of favor but clearly, Mikan had a heavier story to tell. He sensed it in the way she spoke and the earnestness of her hug earlier. He dusted off the sand on his clothes and feet while Mikan did the same. Glancing at his watch, it said eleven thirty which was way past their curfew. When Natsume saw sand on Mikan's hair, he also dusted it off and Mikan did the same thing to him.
"Polka?"
"Hm?" Mikan looked innocent when she retorted.
Natsume heaved a sigh. "About Ruka, I'm sorry."
Mikan waved her hands in order to clear the misinterpretation. "No need. I am genuinely happy for them and I support their relationship."
Good things kept happening around her or if some conflict happened, a solution was easily on the way. Mikan choked on her tears, appreciating all the positive feelings and achievement she had for herself. She finally met the sea, able to successfully push Hotaru and Ruka to admit their feelings, knew Natsume deeper. She ran as fast as she could today and screamed as if her vocal cords were tearing apart. She cheered, yelled, screamed, and jumped. All in a day's work. It was indeed a whirlwind of emotions and realizations. Mikan clutched her chest, her heart ached like it needed oxygen until she realized she was about to shed tears again.
After hearing Natsume's story about his family, she realized that she was not the only one who experienced agony when it came to protecting the family. Like Natsume, she put in a lot of effort to make the love stay but that only survived for a brief time and soon reality and hatred caught up to them. It all started with her wish to see the beach on her birthday. That memory was always so bitter and tragic and Mikan always imagined the beach to be a paradise in hell but all she experienced that day told her otherwise. She felt all sorts of emotions but certainly not tragedy. This was how she made memories with the people important to her.
"Then, why do you look like you're about to cry?"
"I don't know," Mikan sniffed, wiping the tears already forming on her brown eyes, "This day brought so much joy to me maybe that's why I feel like crying."
"Come on," Natsume suggested, believing her statement and took her hand, "Let's get you some rest, Polka Dots."
End of Chapter
Thank you for reading this chapter! I am sorry it took longer than planned. I was just so busy last March organizing this and that and also organizing myself (haha). Kidding aside, I hope you find this chapter well. I originally wanted to add more scenes but I felt like it's dragging already. The interaction between Mikan and Natsume has levelled up on this chapter, I hope that is noticeable enough. I simplified Ruka's confession because comparing to my other stories, I noticed that I write confession like a celebration. Aaaand, Luna has been mentioned several times. Gotta watch out for that. Also, Youichi was mentioned. Just what is his role on this story? Hmmm. See you on the next chapter!
