Something You've Read Before
Chapter Nineteen
Lines to Cross
The lights in the room were at its dimmest. Hotaru gazed at the curtained windows once in a while just to entertain herself briefly before checking the clock and that went in repeat. Yura was already asleep, not moving an inch in her bed. All her energy was used up in the games and at the same time, doing responsibilities as part of the council. Hotaru felt exhaustion crawling up to her also but fought it endlessly. She waited for Mikan, worried that her best friend might be disappointed or crying in a corner because of what happened. Blushing slightly when Hotaru thought of Ruka, she suspected that Mikan worked it out before with Ruka managed to confessed. That was somehow too good to be true. Things never went smoothly in life like that. A click on the door was heard and the lights on the entrance automatically brightened up. Mikan was here. Hotaru got off from the bed, on her feet to greet Mikan at the door.
"Where have you been?" Hotaru asked quietly, careful not to awake Yura who was already snoring.
Mikan sensed distress from Hotaru's tone. "Don't worry, I was with Natsume."
Hotaru assessed Mikan's features quickly as if finding evidences of tears or hurt or whatever and she found nothing. "Okay. I'll accept that."
"Sooo, can you give me any news about you and Ruka?"
Mikan's voice turned a bit higher over that statement. Her smile was wide enough to show excitement and curiosity. She directed Hotaru to the bed while checking if Yura was still in deep sleep. Originally, it was in Hotaru's plans to ask Mikan on her whereabouts but now she was in the hot seat, feeling discomfort in answering questions regarding her personal life. Hotaru was used to opening about family and school problems with Mikan but there was always a slight uneasiness when they talked about boys. Maybe because it was not a common topic and their dating lives were not really that interesting. They mostly discussed about mature life hindrances and now they talked something lighter than the usual, it felt alien and awkward but tolerable. Mikan had a way of making things comfortable, after all.
"I'm so tired to talk about it," Hotaru tried to excuse.
Mikan almost jumped from her seat. "Oh, come on, Hotaru!"
"Keep quiet, you doofus."
Mikan got the warning and made another check on Yura. "I just want to know directly from you how it feels."
It was Mikan who fed Hotaru the idea not to close her doors with Ruka. Someone could actually call it a quiet chase. Hotaru and Ruka gave each other mixed, subtle signals like they were children unprepared to admit that they liked each other because others might teased them for it. They just needed someone to step up the game and be done with it and Ruka took that initiative. No, they both did. The ringing on Hotaru's ears replayed when Ruka shouted that he liked her in front of everyone. Even if the surroundings were quiet now, Hotaru heard the cheers from the crowd in her mind. This elating feeling, Hotaru wondered until when it would last. She thought that through being intimidating, quiet, and frank, she lost the interest of the male population but they were really weird. Always coming up to those who did not give them a second glance.
Honestly, when Mikan revealed that she had a crush on Ruka, the first thing that came to Hotaru's mind was to oppose the idea because it had every potential of being a source of conflict between them. Hotaru was afraid that Mikan would just be heartbroken. She derived all possible outcomes with the negative ones obtaining a higher chance of happening. Hotaru was a genius but she was not god and she could not read minds therefore underestimating Mikan's ability to anticipate situations and read between the lines. Maybe Hotaru was used to that crying Mikan, a version of Mikan who Hotaru deemed weak and fragile. Hotaru forgot that was all in the past now and Mikan was much more capable of understanding than before.
"For starters, it feels strange. I must admit that I know he likes me ever since. When you said you have a stupid crush on him, I was first worried for you."
"I also know that he likes you very much since the beginning. But, you know me, Hotaru, I give it my all in everything but I realized that I don't like him that way, I am just amazed by him."
No hint of bad light or regret in Mikan's tone which sorted out all worries of Hotaru. This was one of those times where Mikan showed how supportive she was of everything Hotaru did. Their friendship was not based on shallowness, instead they built it through experiences they shared for years, through good times and bad times they fought together.
"I made it clear that we're gonna try. I think that's enough."
Mikan held Hotaru's hands to show how proud of her in this new journey. "Knowing you, yes."
"Don't worry about me, Mikan. I can handle personal things like this. I am not that coldhearted."
"Yes, you are not," Mikan agreed and made preparations for bed. "Goodnight, Hotaru."
Going to bed late last night did not stop Mikan from catching the sun rise. She wore her most comfortable running shoes and clothes. Realizing how hard it was to run in the sand yesterday motivated her to try one more time today just to let her body adapt in the special environment. Mikan started to feel the heavy perspiration inside her jacket after seven kilometers with several distance remaining to which she finished after another hour. The sun started beaming on the horizon, illuminating the paradise to where Mikan was. It was crazy how a place shapeshifted from morning to night. The shoreline of Shirahama was magnificent to look at with less people and just the small waves crashing at the sand. It was still low tide and the way the sun reflected at the waters made it look like a serene lake. Mikan glanced at her watch and ran in place. It was almost sunrise.
The wind was as quiet as the waves but there was a particular coldness on it. Mikan drank her water and unzipped her jacket, resting on the shore and calmly watched the sun rose. She imagined doing this with her family several times in her mind. She imagined her mother making breakfast while her father played with her little brother. Mikan betted that she would just be annoying her mother to hurry up cooking and to her father to swing her using full strength and then later on it would be her time to play with her brother. What would Mikan give just to make that happen. Golden light finally radiated on the land and the sea. Some tourists documented the phenomena using their phones and cameras. Mikan touched her face just to confirm that she was smiling and not crying because of that dream of hers. Being in the actual beach gave her only good memories so there was no reason to cry.
When the sun was at its peak, Mikan decided to return to prepare for takeoff and breakfast. Just as she turned, she almost stumbled upon Daichi himself. He also wore a running getup and the sweat still visible in his face and legs. Mikan was used in seeing the captain running in the school field with a long trail behind him, shouting words of motivation to hype up the morning drill. Seeing him all alone now, running like a casual person seemed like a foreign view but Daichi ran half of his life alone. He ran from his home to school and vice versa even when it rained. He ran on weekends and during the night where cars were lesser on the usually busy streets of Tokyo. His favorite was running on the old field by the river far from the busy area of the city. It was well-maintained despite the isolation and that was why he felt home at that field.
"Sakura," Daichi greeted, his hands on the pocket of his jacket.
"Good morning, Captain."
"You were up early. Were you running?"
Mikan wanted to deny it for no apparent reason but no one would believe her. "Actually, yes."
"I see," Daichi acknowledged, "It would be great if you change your mind about returning to our club. I saw your capabilities and I think you will be good for the team. I am graduating this year and I want see a team full of potential before I leave. I want Tsubasa to work his hardest in bringing that out to you."
"I don't think I work well with teams."
Daichi gave a small smile. "Yes, you do. Do not reject the idea right away. Give it time for you to think."
"Thank you for the sincere offer, Captain. You may resume your morning exercise."
"Sakura? Did you consider the favor I'm asking you? Kaname and Rui are great friends of mine."
Sitting on their table last night, Mikan was introduced to two new people from the Photography Club who happened to took the pictures she admired at the Student Council office. Kaname Sono and Rui Amane were classmates and good friends of Daichi. Mikan saw immediately why the three clicked, majorly because they all have calm personalities which were ready to take charge. Mikan guessed age had something to do about it but also just being born with the quality. Daichi introduced them as his friends since middle school who wanted every help possible for a situation that arose within their small club. Mikan felt like the wrong person to be approached to but Daichi reiterated that her help could do a lot which brought a thought to Mikan on what she could do but the thought was lost on the shore last night.
"I'll try my best.."
Daichi did not push the topic further. He knew they went beyond borders when they asked the favor but in order to help his friends, he had no choice but to use his connections. "Thank you. That's more than enough."
Hailing from the Sports Club had put Daichi into a disadvantage when asking favors from the Student Council. He figured that Mikan could be a way seeing how close she was with Ruka and Natsume. Of course there was an issue of using Mikan but he cleared beforehand that it was up to her to help their cause. Mikan understood the purpose and promised to look for ways. It was still unclear to her the main goal of Kaname and Rui but at all cost they needed to enter a competition happening in November so there was a deadline for them. Mikan coughed and excused herself to finally get breakfast, her stomach rumbling already, to which Daichi gave way.
Greeted by the hotel staff on her way to the buffet area, Mikan tried to find her friends. Little by little people are coming, some even in their sleepwear and bed hair. There was a notable line on the buffet area where almost everyone was asking for their bacon and eggs fried to their taste. Food of different cuisines were offered making the buffet overwhelming for a breakfast setup. Mikan craved for hot chocolate the moment she stepped on the room and saw one waiter serving it to a table, making a mental note to prioritize the drink. She scanned the room which composed of not only people from Alice Academy but other hotel guests as well. Weekends was when people flocked on beach resorts like this for their short vacation. Mikan saw that other companies and schools were catered by the hotel which reflected a busy season for them.
"Mikan! Over here!" Yura yelled, waving her hands. Mikan ran and took the seat beside hers. "You were gone early in the morning. Hotaru and I were shocked to see you out of bed."
"Just waited for the sun to rise," Mikan explained.
Yura nodded. "Go get your meal now. Hotaru was already in her second round."
Knowing Hotaru, she was much faster when it came to food than Mikan so there was no surprise there.
Nonoko came with a plate full of salad. "Do you know those guys?" she asked, pointing at the table of Ruka.
"Who?" Anna asked.
"They're from the Photography Club," Yura answered.
"Why are they talking with such serious faces with Ruka and Natsume?" Nonoko asked further.
Mikan examined their demeanors and it seemed ill-fitting with the morning mood. "Who knows?" Mikan butted in and made her way to the buffet area but her eyes never left Natsume's table.
"Hey, guys, eat as much as you can. No stop overs anymore when we go home," Yura reminded.
"We will!" answered the small crowd.
"I'm home!" Mikan yelled from the doorstep.
The moment Narumi heard that, he put down the knife and the potato and ran for the door after wiping his hands. It was already past lunch and Narumi was preoccupied since morning, knowing that Mikan would come back anytime soon. It was natural for a parent to worry about his child who was away for a school trip and no matter how many times Narumi reminded himself that he trusted Mikan's strength, the worry never faded. He only hoped that everything went well and she returned home safe. His prayers were answered though. There stood Mikan with her big backpack, removing her shoes hurriedly and ran to her father. An overnight stay felt like a week for them basing on how much they missed each other. Mikan hugged his father tighter the moment she felt his loving hands caressed her head.
"Mikan! Welcome back. I missed you so much. How was it?"
Breaking the hug, she quickly narrated with enjoyment, "I had fun, Dad. How were you and Serina?"
"We met up with some of the suppliers. She's actually resting upstairs. I guess talking with different people can really exhaust you."
The weekend was Narumi's only time to help Serina with the preparations due to his profession as a teacher. At times like this that he appreciated Serina more with her dedication and patience. Organizing everything was already a big task of itself that Narumi wanted to share the responsibility. This was their wedding after all and they ought to share every bits of it. They met with different people at different times of the day, making big decisions that affected the whole process. Narumi was almost frustrated when they had a hard time choosing the flavor of the cake. Who knew that would be so tough? They had lots to consider starting from the details of the tables and chairs, the theme of the wedding, how simple was simple. All mind-boggling and if Narumi had to do it again, he sure would try his best not to think much and just make the decision.
"I guess I'll see her in dinner later? I'm kinda tired, too. I better take a nap."
"If ever you're hungry, I prepared some food. Just tell me, okay?"
Mikan nodded and went straight to her room, aching for the comfort and familiarity of her bed. Narumi watched her daughter's back disappear, almost plunging into tears to see that she was well and happy. Narumi walked towards the living room to make a phone call, his smile and relief did not leave his being. He wanted to tell the good news already to his longtime friend and one of the most prominent figures in Mikan's life. Subaru was an extension of all the updates Mikan gave Narumi. They kept a close watch on the phone, fretting and trusting at the same time. Subaru told Narumi to relax because Mikan got all the friends that she trusted with the addition of Natsume Hyuuga, another figure making waves in Mikan's life. Everything was over now and Narumi wanted to share that proud feeling already.
"Subaru."
"I heard Mikan's already there. How does she look like?"
"She's fine. Smiling, happy, and stating that she had fun. Thank God everything went well."
"School's good for Mikan. I'm glad about this progress. When she told me she wanted to join the school trip, I could not be more proud. It took a lot from her but she's overcoming it."
"I hope that this will continue, Subaru." Narumi paused, his expression shifted to a serious one,"Any news from Izumi?"
"He's thinking of relocating."
Narumi's forehead creased. "No. Why?"
"Details are not yet clear but it seems like his business failed and wants to sell the house as a collateral. Don't tell this to Mikan yet. I'm afraid this will break everything we've worked on so far. I'm gonna call you for updates. Please keep in touch."
What a way to break the mood with that news. Narumi heaved a deep sigh due to the fact that he considered the situation problematic because if Mikan knew, she would not give up without a fight and when that happened, things could be more complicated. Being stubborn was just innate in Mikan, a trait that she surely inherited from his father.
"I will. Thanks, Subaru."
Narumi remained troubled from the news. He expected a status quo in the life of his brother despite hearing that he started a new business in an expensive location in Akita. Maybe the gamble Izumi took this time was too high. That was the only logical answer to why Izumi wanted to relocate. Izumi never left Akita because of the house and the memories Yuka left. Narumi tried to distract the grim thought and instead thought of a solution but to no avail. The situation still had incomplete details and until he talked with his brother, he would not be certain that the next move would be the right one.
"Guessing from your expression, I take that it was bad news."
Serina's voice woke Narumi from his train of thought. She leaned on the wall with arms crossed, her facial expression unfazed. She heard the whole thing but no clear idea on the problem except that it concerned Izumi. Serina could count on her fingers how many times she met Izumi and they were all dramatic and uncomfortable situations. Maybe she and Narumi had dinner with him once that initially went well until that also faded to dust. In short, she had a bad impression of Izumi, always disliked him. As to why Serina stuck with Narumi all these years despite the interesting experiences she had with his family, maybe she really loved him that much. Serina refused to judge Narumi through his family because he was a beautiful human being all by himself.
Serina knew when Narumi was happy, excited, frustrated, bothered. She knew him too well. She knew that Narumi loved Mikan like his very own daughter, a fact that she had to bear. It was nuisance not to admit it but Serina knew Mikan brought Narumi the colorful slices of his life. Was it jealousy keeping her from accepting Mikan? It was a part of it and also many things, like their relationship was meant to be cold since the beginning. Some relationships could not be changed until the situation changed dramatically.
"I didn't know you're awake."
"I heard Mikan enter. I did not sleep that heavy during the day also," Serina explained then sat beside Narumi and entwined their arms, "So, what did your brother do this time?"
Narumi smiled because he was that easily exposed. "No concrete details yet but Subaru says he want to relocate to who knows where."
"Don't concern yourself with him anymore. He practically doesn't care to anyone here."
That was probably the practical thing to do and the easiest but Narumi refused to give the fight that quickly. Serina was correct in stating that Izumi did not seem to care on the family he had in Tokyo. Narumi had not properly talked with his older brother for years and he missed the family bonding they used to have. Why did it all have to disappear because of one tragedy? Although, Narumi gained one gift behind all the losses. Narumi thought he was the only one being positive over this.
"He's still my brother and Mikan has the right to know everything."
"Do you think that she still wants to see the father who abandoned her? That's unthinkable. "
"Izumi is not that bad."
Izumi was a very chill father, the opposite of Yuka, always finding the right time for his punchline, saving Mikan when she got lectured by Yuka longer than expected. He knew who he was and headed for the right path of being the head of the family. A very loving father in the eyes of Mikan. Narumi saw all that and believed that somewhere deep inside Izumi, he still had those qualities. But, people with smiling faces constantly hid grief badly and that exactly what happened to Izumi. He had yet to accept reality even if it was no one's fault. He had yet to accept that life could end just like that, in a whim, without notice or even a premonition. Izumi's heart was never ready and if hatred was still in his heart, it meant he never moved on.
"Tell that to the gods," Serina mumbled.
Narumi held Serina's hands. "Do not mention this to Mikan yet." The lad might not take it in a positive way.
"Never. I don't want another emotional fit thrown at us. I want this vacation to be relaxing and productive. I don't want to chase a teenager on the streets again."
"Mikan's not like that anymore. You know that she works very hard to be normal."
Serina nodded in agreement. "I can see that."
Narumi felt confused with the revelation. "Then, when can you take away your grievance toward her?"
Serina massaged Narumi's forehead until it relaxed. They had this conversation again and she knew already the outcome. "Maybe when you finally prioritize me over her." It sounded like a child wanting attention but that was how Serina felt the entire time.
"Not this again, Serina. You know how much I love you."
"I want to build a family that's our own."
Serina wanted to return to Japan permanently and quit her work abroad. She wanted to be near Narumi all the time and focused on their family, a dream of her ever since she was sure that Narumi was the one. Their wedding next year was her most-awaited event in this life to make everything official. Actually, it was not about the lavishness or simplicity of it or the chance to be the most beautiful woman of the hour that Serina looked forward but the promised that she and Narumi would announce to the public and in the eyes of the heavens. If only Spring came faster, then Serina could finally become share Narumi's burdens even more.
"And we will. No one says otherwise," Narumi promised her.
"Assure me, Narumi. That you will prioritize us before anyone else. Please, promise me that."
Narumi paused before answering. "My family is my priority and you are my family."
Serina smiled bitterly. "I knew it."
The Hyuuga household was busy that noon because of the appearance of the most-awaited visitor. Well, she was not exactly a visitor but considered family by the Hyuugas. Luna Koizumi was greeted by Kaoru at the living room with arms wide open. Luna still had that medium length hair, petite built, and fair skin. She ran toward Kaoru and kissed her in the cheeks. Years passed after the main office of Koizumi Industries transferred in Osaka with the main family also moving with the company and yet it was like yesterday when Kaoru last saw her. They met once in a while just to share quick greetings but not a conversation which lasted ten minutes. Kaoru remembered that smile from Luna, one that she always compared to Aoi's. There was something about Luna that Kaoru really liked. Qualities like sophistication, intelligence, kindness, and wit that Luna possessed were deemed perfect by Kaoru, fairly perfect for Natsume's standards.
"You look lovelier each time I see you," Kaoru complimented.
Luna blushed at the comment. "Oh, thank you, Kaoru. You also look so much lighter these days."
"Well, I've been taking yoga classes. That somehow smoothens my day."
Luna placed a comforting hand over Kaoru's. "Do not overwork yourself. Natsume is relying to you a lot."
"That child barely relies on anyone, you know that," Kaoru revealed, "He will be here any minute now. He is coming from this school trip in Shirahama."
Luna smiled widened, her heart beat rose in the anticipation of seeing Natsume again. "The Student Council is busy as always."
"Have you already prepared for your first day of school tomorrow?" Kaoru asked.
With an enthusiastic nod, Luna expressed her extreme gratefulness. "Everything's settled. Thank you for taking care of everything."
They conversed for a while, catching up with the years and revealing future plans. A little later, the sound of the car coming from the driveway was heard and Kaoru knew it was her son arriving. She told Luna to make a quick fix before they went to the doorstep for the welcoming. Luna fidgeted, her toes tapping quietly on the floor, and her fingers intertwining with each other. Once in a while Luna tugged her hair behind her ear and then removed it again, thinking what would impress Natsume. Her makeup looked fresh and her clothes were just casual. She wanted to make him notice by being effortless. Luna glanced at Kaoru one more time to give a nervous smile.
The door opened with Natsume carrying his bags, on his shorts and black shirt. "What's with the ten missed calls, Kaoru?" he asked, eyes on the phone.
"Finally!" Kaoru clapped which made Natsume raise his head.
Luna gave a small wave. "Hello, Natsume. Long time no see."
No kidding on that long time remark. It was indeed years when they last saw each other and separated in bitterness. Natsume knew that one of these days Luna would appear in their doorstep to do exactly like this. His mother was predictable in that way but what he did not predict was the day. Natsume was tired from the long trip and the activities held on the past two days. He only wanted to rest in peace and the sleep in the bus was not counted. He might attracted Luna's coming here by telling the story to Mikan. Either way, Natsume was far from delighted and prepared to block his mother's plans all the way.
"What is she doing here?" Natsume spat.
Kaoru frowned at Natsume's unwelcoming remark. "Luna will be a visiting student in Alice Academy starting tomorrow and since you are one of the people who knows her every well, I want you to tour her around and help her all throughout her project."
Luna attempted to evaporate the tensed atmosphere. "My research study has been chosen by the Ministry of Science and Technology to be a part of their long term plan to decrease further damages brought by global warming but my school cannot sustain that research due to inadequate facilities and machineries which Alice Academy has. Good thing that Kaoru here mentioned the state of the art facilities of your school and here I am."
Natsume was not interested at the least but he got the part where Luna would last for a while in the academy. "I'm tired. I'm gonna go sleep."
The fleeting footsteps upset Luna and Kaoru only yelled at her son but Natsume never listened. "Natsume! Come back here!"
Kaoru gave Luna a reassuring look but she knew better. Natsume was still angry at her despite the apologies and the time that passed. The relationship she had to mend was more broken than she thought. It was never easy when it came to Natsume, she always had to exert effort and time because his hear easily closed and he always took the road with less pain.
"Maybe he really is just tired coming from a long trip and all. Anyways, we'll see each other at school tomorrow and I'll do my best to approach him in the nicest way. Thank you for all the help, Kaoru."
"Anytime, Luna."
Mikan blinked several times, star struck at the goddess beauty before her. She was just getting iced coffee from the vending machine when she stumbled upon this person who seemed to be new at the place. The beauty asked her several questions in which Mikan answered shortly and based on that guessed that the beauty was indeed a new student or a student who went for school hunting. The beauty told even more stories about getting lost on her way to Alice Academy and that the school looked different from the photos on the website and lots of changes had been made. At first, Mikan wanted to stop her from talking and ask her directly what was she looking for until she introduced herself.
"What did you say your name is again?"
"Luna Koizumi," the beauty finally identified herself, "I am friends with Ruka Nogi and Natsume Hyuuga if you are familiar with them."
It was more than interesting that Mikan had the chance to meet on person Luna Koizumi, Natsume's ex, right after they talked about her. Several theories came into Mikan's mind on what was Luna doing here, shouting the fact that she was friends with two of Alice Academy's popular students. Mikan obtained mixed feelings at that instant, surprised and awkwardness. She never imagined that this day would come so soon, to interact with one of the people involved in Natsume's past and among all the students in the school that Luna had to ask, it was really her who was accidentally at the right place and time. Mikan wanted to chuckle at the situation.
"Oh! So, are you looking for them?" Mikan confirmed and pointed south. "They're probably in the Student Council office if not in their respective classrooms."
Luna looked relieved. "Thank you so much. May I know your name?"
"I'm Mikan Sakura. Nice to meet you."
Then, Luna made her way to the office. The Student Council Office at this hour probably had the president and another officer especially that another project just finished. Ruka opened the laptop and printed all the proposals and reports from the trip. Hotaru entered the office with a stoic face but Ruka gave his best smile to greet his girlfriend. They were new to this and at times they found each other in silence, unable to say the next word but they managed somehow and relate with one another all over again. Hotaru sorted the files Ruka printed out and prepared tea to energize them in this work. This was how they usually were and yet every action seemed to had more meaning than before. They were a lot caring in handling and treating each other.
"The principal wants the full report of the Shirahama Trip tomorrow. I wanted to extend the deadline because we're still exhausted from that trip but he says it's urgent. I guess he had a board meeting with the owners of the school and has to include this in the agenda."
"I can help you with that," Hotaru assured.
Ruka blushed and held her hands. "I'm so glad you're here."
The office was quiet with them saying nothing. Ruka only held his gaze on Hotaru and realized that they were in another loop where one was scared to say something but by the looks of Hotaru, she seemed like waiting for Ruka to make the first move. The cards were on Ruka's hands now, tried his best to gather all the courage. They were alone, they just became a couple, and nothing could stop him now. A kiss on the cheek would definitely not kill both of them.
"Ruka! I am so glad to see you! It's been so long!" The intruder yelled from the door.
Ruka immediately released Hotaru's hands, his eyes widened, thick drops of sweat formed in his face. "Y-you? What are you doing here?"
Hotaru got irritated by the situation, wondering who the hell was this girl acting so familiar. She hit Ruka on the shoulder to explain everything but the boy only scratched his head, aware of the venomous aura that enveloped the room.
The intruder walked toward them and offered her hand. "Hi! I'm Luna Koizumi. I am friends with Ruka."
Hotaru smirked at the appearance of a character involved in Natsume and Ruka's past. What happened to Natsume was always an open secret in their group. No one talked about it even if they knew the important details of the story. They always mentioned a girl but dared not name it until Koko blurted it out of the blue and suddenly her name became known to them. They knew the name but not everyone saw the girl. Hotaru put on a devilish smile as she gave piercing looks to Ruka who looked constipated at the moment. Luna Koizumi was the infamous girl who became the source of a major conflict between Ruka and Natsume. When Luna decided to gave her sweet yes to Natsume, it strained the relationship of the two boys. When Natsume's family were in ruins and all he could lean on was his girlfriend and his best friend, the two of them was nowhere beside him. That was the summary that Hotaru knew and it was already enough.
"You seem familiar and awfully close with Ruka, I see. I think I know who you are. I am Hotaru Imai, by the way."
Luna giggled, pointing at herself. "Did he ever mention me? I hope only good things." She paused and took a look at the office. "I'm looking for someone who can tour me around. Natsume is nowhere to be seen so I am hoping Ruka can do it instead. Please?" Her face looked angelic when she said the favor.
Ruka gulped, his mouth refused to say a word out of fear.
"He's busy right now," Hotaru said with a smile.
Ruka stared at Hotaru's smile and knew the truth behind. "Very busy right now," Ruka managed to say.
Luna was left disappointed again. "Is that so?"
Another figure opened the door which Ruka desperately hoped was his savior. Anything, even that stupid Koko, could do right now. He looked up to the heavens, praying that a storm would destroy the office but that was far-fetched so the heavens sent a person instead.
"Knock, knock," Mikan greeted.
Hotaru rolled her eyes, aware that Ruka would pass the responsibility on her friend. "Perfect timing, idiot."
"You're the girl from earlier. Are you free right now?" Luna asked, hopeful.
Mikan looked for answers at Hotaru and Ruka, feeling confused. "What for?" she asked.
"Tour me around please," Luna asked, her lips pouting and her hands clasped together.
Ruka ran towards Mikan and made a bow, his hands also clasped together. "Please, Mikan. I beg you."
Mikan failed to reply immediately but she already judged the situation and the favors were not in Ruka. When she saw how nervous her former crush looked, there was no way she would not extend her hands and help. Luna appeared out of nowhere, asking favors in a whim, and yet she looked innocent. Mikan took a deep breath before nodding.
"Okay, fine. Why do I have a bad feeling about this?" Mikan mumbled the last part and faced the new girl, "Luna, right? Come with me and I'll show you every corner of this academy."
Luna was finally relieved and shook Mikan's hands repeatedly. "Finally. Thank you so much!"
Mikan bid her goodbyes on the two, making a mental note to herself not to barge in the office like that when she had really no business. Next time she would just text Natsume to ask his whereabouts and not find him in such a traditional way. Mikan started the tour, curious as to what Luna's purpose here in the academy. Did she transfer? Wasn't she a student here before? Mikan knew that Natsume attended school in Alice Academy all his life. Maybe they were not classmates. Those were the silly questions that ran in Mikan's head as she stated every purpose of the room and pointed where were the important landmarks of the school. Luna listened intently, her smile never left her face. Natsume described her as cheerful so that one was true. The charisma Luna exuded infected Mikan which made her conclude that Luna was definitely Natsume's type.
There were no nonsensical questions asked throughout the tour and Luna was very much interested on where the laboratories, garden, and Science Department located. They stopped by a vending machine to gather cold drinks to which Luna accepted wholeheartedly. The sun's rays started to soften and the shadows grew on the building. Mikan knew it was already late and had to come home. She spent more time than planned. With this, she had to marathon her way to dinner.
"First floor is where the offices are located, second floor for first years, third floor for second years like me, third floor is for the seniors. The building over there is for middle school and cute elementary kids. We have a park, a garden, a parking lots, a huge cafeteria which serves good food, sometimes. There is the Alice Walk, very popular for couples and friends in group."
Luna memorized the details. "But, the principal's office is definitely not in this building."
Mikan nodded. "You are right because it is on another building. Together with the board room, the Alice Hall, and other offices of the principals of different divisions."
"I have always liked this school. It's modern and at the same time traditional in looks."
"I never thought about that but yeah, you are right. Alice Academy has a knack for always upgrading and innovating things," Mikan agreed then asked, "Is your school somehow like ours?"
Luna shrugged her shoulders. "Yes in terms of the facilities and design but not so much in being like you're still in nature. I mean, we are in the middle of Tokyo and yet when I came here, I feel like I am in a jungle with all these trees and grass."
"Are you transferring here then?"
Luna shook her head. "Just here for a project. I don't plan on transferring here this school year."
Mikan dared not to ask further questions because it just lengthened the time spent. "I guess that's enough for the day. If you have more questions, I'll gladly assist you the next time but today I must go."
"Oh! Thank you very much. See you tomorrow."
"I hope you will have a wonderful time with us," Mikan said in sincerity.
Luna gave a knowing smile. "I don't doubt that."
Mikan ran to her classroom to get her bag. Everybody went home, even those assigned in cleaning duty. She checked her belongings, confident that was it was complete even her homework for the next day, and made way to the door. She closed the door silently and prepared her legs to run. When her sprint was about to commenced, a hand grabbed her arms which made almost yelp in astonishment. No one in their right mind would stay this late at school except for club members of the Sports Club but that only happened a few times.
"Who–"
Natsume displayed a bored expression. "Hey, Polka. Had a nice time touring her?"
Mikan relaxed her stance. "No wonder you're nowhere to be seen all day. Ruka almost wet his pants when she showed up at the office. Worse, he was with Hotaru."
"Can I walk you home?" he asked and walked ahead. Natsume did not need Mikan to answer that one.
Mikan pouted and caught up with Natsume's steps. "Oh, so are you giving me the talk right now?" she said in annoyance.
Natsume halted from walking, looking at her unsatisfied expression. "Talk, yes. About walking you home, I just want to."
Mikan blushed at the unconscious effort. She knew that somewhere in the parking lot was Natsume's car but he said he would walk her home. Whatever entered his mind to walked her home resulted in Mikan's appreciation of the guy even more. Small things like this made such an impact to her if only Natsume knew. The hallway was quiet, darkness started to erupt, and they were all alone but Mikan felt like she was in the perfect place.
They were on the stairs when Mikan broke the silence. "She is nice, Natsume. In what I've seen so far, she is very much like what you described her."
"I don't know what exactly her plans are but I have an idea why she's here."
"She's here for research, Natsume."
"That and many other things," Natsume replied nonchalantly, "She can be nice but she's not angel. I don't trust her anymore and I want you to stay away from her."
"Her stay's gonna be short and don't worry, I don't plan on being friends with her anyway." Definitely no plans on being chummy with Luna Koizumi. "Have you talked to Ruka about this?" Mikan asked, remembering Ruka's dilemma earlier.
"We plan to meet later."
So the Luna situation required an emergency meeting which led her to a question. "Do you really think she's up to no good? I mean she is doing research for the Earth."
From what Mikan saw earlier, Luna was not that bad and she even was kind. No human being could fake an attitude like that for so long although the way both Ruka and Natsume seemed unwelcoming of Luna made Mikan curious if the bad blood was that thick. Although, Mikan refused to judge Luna based on the past, that was wrong and besides as long as they were civil with each other, Mikan decided to respect everyone but her priority would always be her friends.
"Kaoru invited her here," Natsume answered in a grip.
Mikan snorted. "Well, sometimes they have ulterior motives."
Natsume gave an amused laugh with how fast her opinion changed. "You really don't like my mother."
It was a fact that Mikan did not bother to hide from Natsume. She crossed her arms, eyes narrowed, and frowned. "Our first encounter was not the greatest, you know that. So far, among all the Hyuugas I've met, it's only your father who had been so welcoming on our initial meeting."
"You don't say," Natsume said in sarcasm, smirking at the realization.
Mikan originally planned to run her way straight home but that changed with this walking thing. They stopped by to get ice cream and breads on sale. Natsume did not want an ice cream at first until Mikan shoved it in his mouth and caused her to laugh for a couple of minutes. Tokyo gave a different kind of brightness during the night but it was tantalizing nevertheless. Natsume opened up how he was so used to the city that whenever he was in more quiet places like Shirahama, he felt like he wanted to live there in solemnity. Mikan doubted if Natsume would just stay in one place considering how big their corporation was. All random things came up in their conversation with one opposing another's opinion. They passed by the house where Mikan was almost hit by Natsume.
"I really like that house," Mikan said. "It looks like a copycat of our home in Akita."
Natsume barely heard Mikan talked about Akita and homes other than the one in Tokyo. He watched her walk while talking, a few times she almost bumped into another person but he was there to prevent that. Who was in Akita? Natsume started to became curious of that. He also knew that Hotaru and Subari Imai originated from Akita. Why they were in Tokyo now? Times like felt like the right time to ask Mikan questions but Natsume felt that it only made her feel sad but still, he was going nowhere just theorizing things in his mind. When Mikan mentioned about giving her the talk, did she think of this?
"Who is in Akita, Mikan?" Natsume asked.
Mikan stopped from her tracks and stared silently at Natsume, caught off-guard by the question. Then, she looked at the side, knowing that they arrived. Natsume waited for an answer, hoping that Mikan would not evade this time.
"My father," Mikan replied.
Natsume already a follow-up question in his mind but a voice interrupted saying, "You're late, Mikan." It was Serina holding two brown bags of vegetables and meat.
Mikan turned around in a whim. "I'm sorry, Serina. I happened to tour a new student around campus after class."
"Next time, inform. Who is this young man?" Serina asked when she realized the presence of another company.
Natsume frowned, knowing that he lost the opportunity again. "Natsume Hyuuga. Nice to meet you."
Serina eyed him from head to toe. "A friend?"
Mikan gave a quick answer to that. "Yes. He just walked me home to discuss things about our club. He is the vice president of the student council."
Serina offered her hand to Natsume who only observed her. "Serina Yamada, fiancée of Narumi who must be your adviser. Mikan, come inside immediately after you say your goodbyes."
Mikan followed Serina's figure until she disappeared and sighed. She stared back at Natsume who had a grin plastered on his handsome face.
"That's new. I didn't know Mr. Narumi is unmarried."
"They are in a long term slash long distance relationship and planning to wed next year," Mikan explained but received no reply. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
Natsume shrugged his shoulders. "Because I'm having a hard time grasping the fact that he had you with a woman who is working overseas. She doesn't treat you like her daughter, either."
Mikan giggled timidly. "More mysteries about me?"
Yes, but she would not tell. Natsume closed his eyes, accepting his defeat this time. He scratched the back of his head and shifted direction back to the school. "It's late. I should go now. Ruka's probably waiting, worrying what is the best explanation for Imai to understand."
"The truth will do," Mikan suggested.
Natsume paced back to where Mikan was, pinching her cheeks. "Why don't you tell me that the next time then?" he taunted.
Mikan removed his hands, applying a moderate amount of strength. "Goodnight, Natsume. Thank you for walking me home."
"See you tomorrow."
The retreating figure of Mikan made Natsume ached for her presence longer. He knocked his temple once to avoid the enchantment and headed back to the school. The drive to get to Ruka's home was short. Natsume found Ruka eating chips on his game room, munching even if there was still food to chew. An old anime film played on the television. Natsume did not bother to knock or announce his presence and instead jumped on the couch and stole Ruka's food. There was already soda prepared so Natsume drank that too. This was how they were when they had to talk about something important. They were teenagers vying for food before talking even if they ate a snack earlier.
"I thought you grew some balls when you confessed to Imai in front of everybody," Natsume commented, changing the film because the art hurt his eyes.
Ruka got irritated at the sudden stop on his film but forgave Natsume because he knew winning was out of his reach. "Don't mock me, Nat. It's Luna we're talking about. I was totally unprepared! If you only saw how Hotaru looked at me and to think it was only the third day of our relationship! What a bad omen. So, what's her deal?"
"Kaoru sent her here." Natsume said that line several times that day.
Ruka frowned. This was bound to happen sooner or later but with how quiet things were on the past year, he was surprised to saw it came now. "I know Luna will not become a bother to my life except for being a source of conflict between Hotaru and I but for you it's entirely different."
"Kaoru tends to be traditional, you know."
Ruka stared at his friend who acted unaffected by the whole ordeal. If Luna was back, it meant that Kaoru was setting up the future of both companies this early. No matter how cliché that sounded, Ruka saw the high chances of another arranged marriage happening in the future. It would not be arranged though if they still had feelings for each other. Ruka's head ache because they used to fight over Luna's feelings and now they were concocting a plan to prevent her from entering their lives again only that the boulder was gigantic enough to thwart their plans any minute and that happened to be Kaoru Hyuuga.
"Do you have an ounce of feelings remaining for Luna? Because , I sure don't, well, maybe except for being a friend."
"She just brings me sad memories," Natsume answered after a few seconds.
The reply made Ruka unconvinced, rolling his eyes, his expression called for desperation. "Answer the question, Natsume. Is there a chance, even the smallest in the universe, that you still like her?"
Natsume eyed Ruka, evident that he was not able to answer the question. "No. I don't know."
Ruka felt defeated, scratching his head, trying to think of questions that could spring the specific answer that he wanted. "Do you like somebody now? Like, for example, Wakako from your class?"
"Hell no," Natsume spat.
Ruka tried to think of more names. "Maybe Nonoko?"
"Don't make me gag, Ruka. Besides, she's dating Mochu."
Ruka felt ashamed including her on the list but he thought of a better one. "Oh, that gangster guy. Then, how about Mikan?"
"What?" Natsume blurted. Who saw that coming, right?
"I'm asking if you happen to like Mikan," Ruka asked one more time, acting innocent but he wanted to invade Natsume's mind with that question.
Natsume stood up to get another drink from the fridge. "What makes you think that?"
Ruka questioned his friend's sudden attempt of evading the question. "Just the way you treat her, Nat."
"We're friends," Natsume clarified.
Ruka was not listening. "Answer the question, Natsume."
"What if I like someone? What does that even mean in this Luna situation?" Natsume asked, his tone rising.
"Because that way I'll believe that you will not get back to her. Come on, you know better. That way I'll know that you moved on and that you can present that lucky girl to Kaoru and have her stop," Ruka answered, sounding practical.
Basing on Ruka's way of treating the situation, he really moved on, Natsume was jealous of that fact. As for him, he still grudged over the things that Luna did. They were not actual grave sins, no third party or any other form of cheating, but she left him to his own devices and accused him of being controlling and disturbed. Natsume felt judged, angry at the truth that Luna did not accept him at his worse when he risked his friendship with her and Ruka to make their feelings official. She said all the things that Natsume did not want to hear. All of those betrayal happened and Kaoru still favored Luna. Natsume did not know what his mother saw in her.
"Will the girl be really lucky? I wonder."
Ruka hit the couch, wanting to see a better resolve from his friend. "That's beside the point. You know how aggressive Kaoru gets when it comes to things like this. She will stop at nothing and there's no other way to stop her if Luna backs off and you fight for yourself, for your own interest this time."
Natsume welcomed the idea. "You've got a point in there, buddy."
"Now, I made you realize things. So, can you help me with Hotaru?" Ruka interjected.
Natsume drank his second soda. "Just tell her the truth."
"Where did that advice come?"
"From the best friend."
Another knowing look came from Ruka. "So, you already talked to Mikan about this."
Natsume glared. "Stop that look or I'll punch you in the face, Nogi. We're friends."
"If you say so. Also, that advice will earn me a death glare and the silent treatment but knowing Hotaru, it might work eventually. When it doesn't, I just have to obey her every single time until she forgives me."
Natsume wanted to laugh at Ruka's pathetic state at that moment but he realized he was no better. "You're so whipped, I could almost gag."
The officers were completely gathered that early morning. Yura noticed the tensed atmosphere while Hotaru stayed expressionless. Koko's jaw almost fell off while Sumire turned her swivel chair left to right, right to left while looking at the reaction of everyone. Natsume was not in a good mood and Ruka was displaying nervousness as he stood beside Luna. Proper introductions were not usually like this and they met different people together but not this reaction. The air-conditioning seemed not to work or it was the heaviness of the air that made the place damped. Luna felt weird at the reaction of the people around her. Two days in Alice Academy and she had yet to feel the hospitality she expected.
"Good morning, everyone. My name is Luna Koizumi, a visiting student, here to use your garden and laboratory for my latest research. The principal was kind enough to put me under the supervision of the Student Council while I'm here."
"New girl thinks she found her babysitters," Sumire whispered to Hotaru.
"How long are you gonna be here, Miss Koizumi?" Yura asked.
"Minimum of four months and everything else depends on the progress of my research."
"How about your studies on your real school?" Koko asked.
Luna was more than happy to answer. "I can take them online and attend classes when I am not so busy with my assignment. I am actually not so new in this school because until middle school I was here."
"Hence, you didn't need the tour," Hotaru stated the truth, quite annoyed by it.
Luna dismissed the accusation. "No, I still do because years have gone by and I am not good in remembering places."
"I hope everyone gets along with Miss Luna Koizumi during her stay here," Ruka stated.
Luna hit Ruka playfully on the shoulder to which he only coughed, earning a glare from Hotaru. "Don't be so formal with me, Ruka. It's like we're not friends."
Sumire was quiet all this time, trying to remember where she heard the name until it snapped. "Oh, so you are that Luna Koizumi," she said and eyed Ruka and Natsume who both looked occupied.
Luna displayed a more serious emotion, saying, "You all seem to know a bit about me."
"It's a case of a person who knows a person. Besides, our families interact in gatherings. Maybe we met there or heard you from there," Sumire explained but her eyes challenging Luna.
"Maybe so."
Ruka clapped his hands, putting a stop with the ridiculousness of the situation. "Alright, guys, introductions are over. We can go back to our classes and fulfill our tasks today. That's it. Good morning."
Everyone stood up and gathered their things, making their way to the door and talking about where to get lunch later. Ruka was proud of himself to end that quicker than it supposed to be but he remembered to explain things to Hotaru later. The truth had to work its magic or else he had to alter the truth but that was another far-fetched imagination. If the situation was already hard for Ruka, then it must be harder for Natsume but at least he was single.
"Natsume, let's have lunch later?" Luna offered.
Nastume raised a hand, replying without even looking at her, "No, I want to eat my meal in peace."
Mikan stared at the growing crowd of her table with Yuu. Lunch time came, the kind of war Mikan and Yuu was used to fought, especially when it came to the seats. Mikan wondered what was up to see Sumire and Koko in the cafeteria when they loved the food outside the school. She stared at her lunch menu and found nothing special about it. Mikan played with her chopsticks, amazed on how casual Sumire was acting. Koko was already on the line ordering their food, if he could only protest, he would not take the responsibility but who said no to Sumire, no one of course. Students were coming, increasing the noise of the place and it was evident in Sumire's facial expression that the noise annoyed her. Mikan verified if they really wanted to stay there but Sumire only gave a smile.
"Wow, you guys are eating in the cafeteria," Yuu commented.
Sumire faked a grin. "We eat here all the time."
Mikan did not buy the bull. "Yeah, right. So what's up?"
"Luna seems a bit shady to me," Sumire said frankly.
"Luna? Who's Luna?" Yuu asked, obviously lost in the topic.
Mikan eyed Sumire carefully. "You never really know how to miss a beat, Sumire."
Sumire shrugged, tapping her chopsticks on the table which kind of annoyed Mikan. "I'm just saying that she's here to get back to her ex."
"You mean Natsume?" Mikan said in disbelief.
Sumire nodded like a child. "It's so obvious. Her school doesn't have the right facilities for her research? Wack me. Then she could have just went to the ministry's laboratory and have everything she needs at the palm of her hands. Besides, does Alice Academy have another room for another sponsorship? The budget is like building another club."
"You got a point there."
Sumire smirked, her eyes set on Mikan. "So, Mikan, stop with the denial."
"Excuse me?" Mikan asked in confusion.
"Oh, darling, don't you like Natsume?" Sumire revealed which made Yuu choked on his own saliva. "You have to do something about this."
"What?!" Mikan yelled, closing her face to Sumire's and made dart eyes, "Are you nuts, Sumire Shouda? If somebody hears you saying that, they might really, really, really get the wrong idea this time."
Sumire did not bother to reply and only laughed at how guilty Mikan was. She then winked at Yuu who still had no idea on the gist of the conversation. Their talk was interrupted by Koko barely making it to their table with all the trays in his hands. Yuu stood up to help him and Koko thanked Yuu for it.
"Chicken curry, milk bread, and iced tea for Mikan, fried chicken with sautéed vegetables and water for you my darling, and pizza, burger, nachos, and omurice for me. Yuu gets the the rice cake and maki," Koko enumerated as he placed the orders on the table, double checking if he forgot any.
"Well, I'm just warning you. Exes don't just come back without a reason," Sumire said as she took the first bite of her pizza.
Mikan did not know if continuing this conversation would stir her stomach or not. "They're in middle school then. How serious could that be?" she tried to reason out.
"First love never dies," Sumire reiterated.
Koko butted in the conversation. "I agree. Well, Sumire is my first love so."
"I better be, Kokoro Yome."
They focused on eating after that mini debate with Mikan finally being thankful that she got to eat in peace. Yuu was sharing his maki rolls when a group of girls screamed just near the entrance of the cafeteria. No one from them bothered to look up because they already had an idea. It was always like this and the source of commotion was always the same.
"Based on the squeals, that must be Ruka or Natsume or both," Yuu said.
Mikan took a gulp from her drink, saying, "Hotaru's eating out with Ruka so I guess that must be–"
"Hey, Polka." Natsume was already in their table, his eyes fixed on Mikan who currently had curry sauce on the corner of her lips.
"Have you eaten already?" Mikan asked.
Natsume took a seat beside her as if it was the most natural thing in the world. Yuu adjusted to make space. "Texted you several times to ask where you'll be having lunch but got no reply. It took me a minute to figure out you'll be here because curry is on the menu," Natsume stated.
Mikan was amazed, surprised on how accurate that hunch of his was. "You're good. I left my phone in the classroom that's why I can't reply."
"I'll be back," Nastume announced, eyeing Sumire and Koko, and went in line.
Koko checked on Sumire for confirmation but his girlfriend already had a manipulative smile on her face. It looked like Sumire really knew where to follow her scoop. When she asked to have lunch at the cafeteria, it was already suspicious and when he saw Mikan and Yuu already, Koko concluded that it had something to do with one of them. It turned out that the reason had something to do with Mikan because Yuu looked like a lost child. Nothing so unusual in eating at the cafeteria but Natsume appeared without asking anyone where to find them. Koko had no idea that his friend became so close with Mikan Sakura. Was he blinded by fog and light not to see this and yet his girlfriend appeared to be all-knowing. Luna's coming also instigated these circumstances. She was also a person who arrived unexpectedly. Koko'e eyes widened when he connected the dots.
"Hey, guys! Can I share a table?" Luna asked, not waiting for an answer and already took the seat beside Sumire which made their space more crowded.
Sumire was not happy. "What are you doing here, Luna?"
Mikan's eyes broadened looking at how large their group became. There must be something about this day that almost everyone wanted to eat cafeteria food. Maybe it was the curry. Well, Alice Academy's cafeteria provided delicious breads and curry but Mikan found that reason to be odd.
"I want to have lunch with Natsume," Luna replied.
"Oh, great! Make sure you eat a lot, okay?" Sumire replied in sarcasm.
"Polka, share your bread with me. They ran out of it," Natsume said as he was near the table but he suddenly was not in the mood for bread anymore, "What did I tell you earlier? I said I want to eat in peace. Are you having a hard time processing that?"
Luna tried to act unaffected by his remark. "I just want to talk to you, catch up."
"You're not welcome here," Natsume said, putting his tray on the table in a lousy manner.
"Please. I mean well."
Mikan blocked Natsume's view of Luna. "I think Luna just really wants to eat with people she's familiar with, right?" she said, lightening up the atmosphere.
"Yes," Luna replied.
Mikan grabbed Natsume's arm to pinned him down on the seat and whispered something to him. "Come on, Natsume. It's just lunch and you're with us so…"
"I'm glad that discussion is over," Luna said, noting the interaction between Mikan and Natsume, "So, you and Ruka together in Student Council. I think that's awesome. I mean you always form a great partnership."
"I heard you're friends with them, is that right?" Sumire asked, suddenly taking advantage of the situation.
"Yes. Our families know each other and ever since we were kids, we were always together."
Sumire faked a frown. "Look at that, Koko darling, not all childhood friends stay together."
"Well, many things happened," Luna replied, her eyes mocking Sumire.
"I'm done," Natsume said only after a few bites on his meal. He stood up and exited the room.
"Wait, Natsume!" Luna yelled, attempting to catch him.
Mikan finished her meal quickly and stopped Luna from following Natsume. "Pardon him. I guess Natsume doesn't like it when you don't get straight to the point."
"What do you mean?" Luna sneered.
"You're his ex, right?" Mikan was already irritated at Luna's antics of showing up uncalled for and destroying the peace she had. First, with the tour and now lunch.
Luna crossed her arms, her expression was not friendly anymore. "So, you know."
Mikan's face remained firm. "We all actually have an idea about it. If he acts like this maybe because he isn't ready to face you again so you can at least give him time. Excuse me." Then she ran for Natsume.
Walking out was such a dramatic move that Natsume had to take but he was pissed so his mind did not really function at its best earlier. It upset Natsume to realize that it was him who always had to run away because Luna was always out chasing him as if he was the guilty one. He only wanted to have lunch with Mikan. Look at him now, sitting under the tree, waiting for a few minutes till break was over. He realized he was still hungry. Natsume rested his back on the grass, placing his arm over his eyes in an attempt to rest his mind. But, nothing really happened on his favor because not a minute later, something warm touched his cheek.
"That ended well. Can you tell me something?" It was Mikan offering her milk bread from earlier.
Nastume sat up and took the bread, taken aback by her presence. "I don't want to talk about her further more."
"Do you still like her?" Mikan asked, giving a banana milk drink to Natsume.
Natsume gazed at Mikan's face, his answer came faster compared the time when Ruka asked him, "No, I don't."
Mikan hid her smile to show how relieved she was to hear that. "Okay, so eat up. Don't walk out on food again," she lectured.
Nastume watched Mikan who was watching him eating. She did it again, making an effect to him as if it were nothing to her. The milk bread tasted better and the drink calmed his soul. Her presence gave a chill feeling on this humid day. Mikan continued her tirade about wasting food and money and Natsume did not listen, his focus on her animated expressions and sometimes on his food. He knew better not to do it again now that he knew the consequences it brought. Mikan rubbed his back when he almost choked at the sweetness of the banana milk, her hands warm on his back. Mikan only laughed at him, saying he looked stupid. He only glared at her.
It's not too late when Natsume realized that this was why he wanted to have lunch with her.
"Good afternoon! Mikan, can you please sign in our petition?" Kaname Sono asked with a clipboard on his hands, offering it to Mikan. The food was consumed and the lunch break was over.
Mikan stood from the grass. "Hello, Kaname. Petition for what?"
Natsume snatched the clipboard and read it. "What is the meaning of this, Sono?"
Kaname faced Natsume with a fierce look, far from his gentle persona. "We are making an appeal. One more effort to stop you from dissolving us."
"Help us to maintain Photography Club's status as an official club of Alice Academy. Thank you!" Rui Amane from the Alice Walk yelled.
Natsume was a little confuse on how familiar Kaname and Mikan were acting. "Where did you guys meet?" he asked.
Mikan glanced at Kaname before snatching back the clipboard and signing the petition. "Sukiyaki night in Shirahama. They're good friends with Captain Himura."
"I see," Natsume said in disappointment, "This effort will all be in naught, Sono, you know that. They already made a decision."
"We have our own passion, values, perspective. We are not photojournalists, Hyuuga. We take portraits and landscapes and there's no news to that, only emotion. You cannot take that away from us just to give way for this sponsored project of the school," Kaname remined, his voice not wavering a bit but there was a hint of desperation.
"Sponsored project?" Mikan asked.
Nastume ignored her. "You read the letter and they stated every reason and compensation there."
"Those are not justifiable. We can never accept that." Kaname fought back.
"Please help us! Sign in our petition. Thank you!" Rui shouted one more time before going to where Kaname was.
Natsume said in his most commanding tone, "Since you're given a week to wrap up all your club activities, I will forgive this act but stop this or else you'll face the consequences based on the student handbook."
"And that might be? We have nothing to lose anyway," Rui argued.
Natsume smirked. "Then, you may lose your only way out of this rebellion."
Kaname and Rui took off after getting Mikan's signature. They were the club leaders Daichi mentioned to Mikan. They ran the Photography Club of the school which struggled a lot this year in maintaining the proper amount of members. The club's purpose of existence was deemed unnecessary by the school because if pictures they needed, the photojournalists of the school paper would be there to cover it. They had no notable activities this year except for the annual national contest for student photographers held every November. Mostly the focus of the club's photos were portraits, landscapes, and street which were all fun to learn but Kaname guessed students nowadays could learn everything about photography just by watching videos on the internet. That photography was just a hobby for most people more than passion.
Rui and Kaname were different. They wanted to tell a story through this complex art. Not only in a digital platform but also using film. They thought all sorts of way to boost their membership and when they were about to pass the proposal, they received a notice of disbandment. Rui thought it's a joke at first but Kaname's expression was already grim. The initial action they took was to talk with the Student Council's top officers. After all, it was the student government which handled all club activities. It was within their power which to approve and reject when it came to clubs and club-forming but they already had a firm answer of continuing the disbandment.
"Natsume," Mikan called out.
"What?"
"The sponsored project. Are they talking about Luna's research?" Mikan asked, already feeling discontent and when Natsume did not answer, she only smiled sadly, "It seems so."
"Don't look at me like that. It seems like you already know."
"Not the whole story," Mikan clarified. "I really love the photographs they've taken in Shirahama and the ones posted in your office."
"Stay out of this, Polka."
Mikan's face said that she would not backed down. "I'm just saying, Natsume."
Natsume knew he was just wasting his words because not in this lifetime that Mikan would give up this fight. "Of course, you would not listen to that."
End of Chapter
Heya! I am back with another chapter. Thank you for all your responses from the previous chapter. It really made my heart swell. I hope you enjoyed this one, too! I think dialogues took up most of this chapter. I've written a lot and could not lessen it somehow because it's fun to see characters talking. Tell me what you think about this chapter all over.
