Something You've Read Before

Chapter Twenty seven

Start Losing Sight

Kaoru Hyuuga was wrapping up a conference call online when her secretary entered the room with the expression of wanting to inform his boss that someone was waiting for her outside. The visitor was not in her schedule but important otherwise. The call finally ended and the secretary apologized but said that Aoi came in looking for her, demanding a presence in the soonest available time. With a nod of understanding, Kaoru escaped the comforts of her branch office to see Aoi, grabbing a glass of wine along the way. Visits from Aoi were not rare but since Kaoru assigned her a mission, it was just the right time to receive a report. Being in Hokkaido did not save them from the looming evidence that fall finally came but not in a state wherein the heater should be utilized. The wine's purpose to induce a little warmth on Kaoru's core proved to be successful and now her mind was far from business but focused on family affairs instead.

A glimpse of her eldest child was caught behind the flowy curtains of the veranda of the largest suite of the building. Like Kaoru, the refined Aoi Hyuuga had her fingers on a delicate glass filled with champagne, admiring the residential lights filling the district as if seeing it for the first time when in fact she had lived within the area for almost four years now. Aoi's marriage to her husband allowed their family business to slowly penetrate the business districts of Hokkaido but despite the partnership, Aoi chose to perform philanthropic activities instead. The unreadable expression on Aoi's face gave Kaoru an idea on what to expect on the report she had yet to hear. Stomping her most comfortable heels, Kaoru approached Aoi with a friendly face, leaning on the sturdy bar making the veranda a safe place to be. Aoi raised her glass before taking a sip, remaining a stoic façade all throughout until her mother spoke.

"Hi, Aoi."

"I did what you asked me. I completed my task."

Kaoru nodded at that, knowing that Aoi only showed her face when she completed what was asked of her. "Were you victorious?" asked Kaoru.

It was an obvious no but Aoi chose her wordings carefully so Kaoru would not focus on her failure. Meeting Mikan Sakura enlightened Aoi's view of the girl, causing her not to solely relied on what Kaoru fed her. When her mother approached her to influence this girl, who Natsume took fancy to, to distance herself from the heir of the Hyuugas, Aoi brewed a very deep curiosity. This was the first time in years that Aoi heard Natsume opened his heart to someone who did not belong to his original clique. The name Mikan Sakura never rang a bell to Aoi which meant that she was a girl who came from a simple family, must be impressive enough to enter Natsume's life. Aoi accepted the task without second thoughts because if there was someone who related so much with the circumstance, it was her and she had a lot to say about it. Kaoru already mentioned that this Mikan Sakura had no proper upbringing and that her table manners were disappointing.

Aoi readied herself to see the worst of Mikan Sakura. Of course, she did not believe everything Kaoru said because she had the tendency to exaggerate things but still Aoi trusted her mother's observations. To put more highlight to the mission, Luna also struggled to rekindle with Natsume because he had lost all interest in her which should not happen because a promise was made between the Hyuugas and the Koizumis. That was why Aoi's success was vital and she kept that in mind the moment she left her husband in the middle of their vacation. Nothing was remarkable in the physical appearance and educational background of Mikan Sakura as Kaoru fed her but the moment the brunette opened her mouth to retort in Aoi's advices while saying things with great conviction, Aoi's opinion on her changed and somehow knew why Natsume was eager to be with this Mikan Sakura.

There was no way Aoi would not talk to Natsume after that and by talking to her younger brother, she saw his willingness and feared for his future with Mikan. Never did Aoi wish for Natsume to be miserable but if he continued on defiling their mother's wishes then everyone around him should be wary especially Mikan who seemed powerful on her words and dedication but lacked power on her background. Being stubborn was the one thing Aoi did in the past which led her to her greatest heartache and she saw that happening once again. She asked for Ioran's wise words about the situation but it was clear that his father already planned things out in favor of Natsume. That fact somehow raised hopes in this forthcoming dispute within their already broken family but Aoi worried the most for Mikan Sakura's chances. It was in Kaoru's nature to hurt the person by hurting the people he cared about and in this case, Mikan would suffer more by making her friends and family suffer.

"Mikan Sakura prefers to meet you formally so you can stop judging her."

Although it was a challenge from Mikan herself, Aoi already assessed that their meeting would do no good. Kaoru's eyes glinted upon the idea or maybe she had a plan to do that all along, Aoi suspected. A hint of mischief glowed from the crook of Kaoru's smile as she waved her glass of wine to Aoi. No question was asked if Aoi was able to convince both Natsume and Mikan because Kaoru easily read the situation and concluded that even Aoi failed to put a stop on this little problem. Which was troublesome but still manageable in the world of Kaoru Hyuuga.

"How charming that girl is to be able to persuade my daughter," Kaoru jeered.

Aoi smiled resentfully, placing her glass on the round table. "She did not. But, I must say that she is very logical, Kaoru. I also talked to Natsume and no matter how futile their efforts would be, well, knowing you, they just won't budge."

"And?" Kaoru waited for Aoi's opinion.

It came out as a rant as Aoi continued her story, making hand gestures for every word thrown. "And have you seen Natsume? He talked to me, insisted a conversation. He looks better and even asked for my help."

"And?" Kaoru asked once again.

Aoi sensed terror in Kaoru's short questions which made her take a deep breath and calmed her wits. "So, I wondered where is this coming from, this change in him. I could only think of one reason."

Kaoru scoffed and glared at her daughter, the daggers in her eyes told Aoi not to finish her sentence anymore. With slight resistance, Kaoru disregarded her wine on the same table where Aoi placed her champagne before rushing inside the suite, bearing an annoyed look. Aoi followed her mother's footsteps in an attempt to explain her side in detail but no chance was vested on her and the situation became one-sided all of a sudden.

"Clearly, you are enamored by their petty relationship. You easily forget, Aoi. Remember that guy who I warned you about using extreme means? I told you he was just using you and he never loved you but what did you do?!" Kaoru remarked strongly, her voice raspy and emotional.

Holding on the nearest solid object Aoi found, she rested her trembling hands. "Stop, Kaoru," she pleaded. The memory of Aoi's darkest days always gave her chills, filling her heart with regret. Every time she fought with Kaoru, this specific period in her life was always brought up much to Aoi's dismay. It was unfair to use the person's past to determine the present and future but Kaoru never shied from reminding Aoi her mistakes just to put her on track again.

"You went so far to defiling me, eloping, and looked how I found you? Crying! Feeling worthless! Desperate! Weak!" Kaoru yelled in the room.

Aoi's eyes widened, on the verge of breaking into a fitful cry. "Why is this all about me now?" she countered.

The hard look Kaoru let Aoi see was unforgettable but when she saw Aoi drowning in remorse, Kaoru's eyes softened. Maybe she was not used to not getting what she wanted that was why she released the frustration by shouting at Aoi. "Because I expected you to bring me results and not to be swindled by the other side," explained Kaoru in a calmer manner.

With a few more breaths, Kaoru settled on the couch and nursed her aching temple. She knew her worst traits but found no desire to change because those attitude made her who she was but whenever it hurt her children, Aoi in this instance, she would have it in her heart to use her motherly instincts. Kaoru was not well accustomed in acting like a tender-loving mother but she had soft spots for her children, even to Ioran, but her strict personality clouded her way of showing affection most of the time. If only someone showed her the proper way how to take care of your own children and compromise with your husband, then maybe she still had a complete family. The idea sometimes passed her mind, the what ifs of her life crossed her brain like a sad memory, and then she found herself staring into the surface after, wondering what life would be if she made different choices.

All of Kaoru's life, she trained and practiced to be the perfect heiress who would manage the lives of the thousands of employees working under their corporation, married to a prominent family which eventually led to divorce. Kaoru never missed school, she followed all the rules and never questioned them, achieved all the goals laid out for her. When Kaoru met Ioran, she never met someone so carefree despite carrying the burden of handling one of Japan's extensive corporations. He introduced her to humor, to charity, and to making your own decision. At that point in her life, Kaoru achieved a goal not mandated by her elders and she learned how to build a family. She thought she was successful in it, only to feel devastated later when her upbringing blocked her to be a good family woman.

Aoi never heard her mother apologize but the way her face changed just now, she knew that if only her pride let it, she would say sorry. "I am happy now, I really am. I am lucky that I found the love of my life and partly, I owe it to you."

"Good thing that you know," Kaoru emphasized. Because she really wanted for Aoi to treasure what she had at the present.

"But, Kaoru, they are different. We all know what Natsume is like and if he says he wants to be with the girl, why don't you just let them be? Maybe in the end, they will realize that they are not meant to be. Why don't you just wait for that to happen? You know how teenagers are these days."

"You know I take my promises seriously, Aoi. Also, this is the better way to secure all our future. This is a family tradition."

Aoi pleaded to her mother once more. "Just talk to Natsume about this, please. Before you do anything."

There was no indication if Kaoru would grant Aoi's request based on her expression. Once again, Kaoru stared on the landscape before her as if in deep thought. She turned to face Aoi again with narrowed eyes. "You said he asked for your help. What did you say?" asked Kaoru.

"Don't worry. I turned it down. I said I can't help him but I won't meddle either."

Kaoru nodded and knew that this was the last time Aoi would say something about the matter. It was now her opportunity to make a move and she planned to end this in the fastest way possible. It did not matter if she lost the people she involved in this, Kaoru could work alone. Knocking some sense on Natsume might be easier than the dread she had on her mind. And when Natsume and her finally got on the same page, then their relationship would brighten and their family would somehow be fixed in a way.

"I guess I won't be seeing you for a while again," said Kaoru.

"I have to focus on building my own family," said Aoi, noting the tenderness in Kaoru's voice, "What do you have in mind for them?"

"Oh, I left a little bomb in this high school girl's locker."

"Is this a prank?"

Mikan turned her head from left to right and right to left. She inspected the exits and entrances surrounding the locker area just to find the person who could have dropped a trivial letter. Reading it once again, she refused to believe the content of the letter because no school in Japan could run without a student council. Students had to elect people to represent them in making school decisions because they were primarily the ones affected of any changes that occur within the educational institution. In addition, the members of the current Student Council would never allow this. Mikan crumpled the paper and threw it in the trash then proceeded to getting her books and notebooks for the day. She actually got to school earlier because she had to catch Yuu and asked for his help for this Math homework she found so confusing. So, before the teacher got to scold her again in front of the class for struggling in Trigonometry, she better prevent that by learning from Yuu.

They agreed to meet on the study area thirty minutes before school started and Mikan was just in the right time. She changed into her school shoes and sealed her locker tight. Since she had to pass by the Alice Walk to reach her destination, it was natural to meet early birds of the school but not in her wildest imagination she thought she would meet Luna. As always, Luna was clad in civilian clothing with just a badge of the academy pinned on her chest to signify that she was not an outsider while Mikan wore her well-ironed uniform. They both stopped when they realized they met and with awkward looks, they tried to determine if they would continue on their way or acknowledge each other's presence. The way they met and separated last time was far from friendly so to confront each other now would be expected but they knew they were old enough not to do that.

"Hi, Sakura."

It was Luna who broke the dull atmosphere. She meant to talk to Mikan since the volleyball game but found no opportunity to carry out the plan until this accidental meeting. Luna remembered the first day she stepped foot in this school when it was only Mikan who agreed to tour her around. There was no pretense that time or even a hint that they were going to be rivals. Mikan simply described the academy as it was during their tour while Luna listened and asked questions when she found the details hazy. Their relationship was neutral at its best until that fated lunch wherein Luna intruded and Mikan called her for it. It made Luna laugh to replay those memories in her mind.

Mikan stared straightly at her. "It's so rare to see you this early."

Luna glanced at the notebook she had on her hand. "I actually waited for the sunrise to check the temperature. This year is at least three degrees colder than last year. It was part of my data collection."

It became an almost forgotten fact that Luna came here to do research so good thing that Mikan was reminded of it now. She noticed the heavy backpack Luna wore which probably contained books and her devices. "Now that you mentioned it, that actually feels correct," said Mikan.

Silence engulfed the surroundings primarily before Luna spoke again. "I saw you on my way and I decided to talk to you."

"Okay."

Luna bit her lip and continued her speech when she saw affirmation in Mikan's eyes. "I'm sorry about the volleyball game. It was really my intention to put my frustrations on you because of Natsume. There was really no established rivalry between us but the moment I stepped foot here, I know he looks differently at you and trust me, I know that look. From then, I thought of removing you out of the way so you can just let us be but I realized that we are not children now and we know better."

To hear that from Luna actually relieved Mikan a lot. She disliked it when someone harbored ill thoughts on her and to receive an apology from Luna made her feel lighter and more free. There was no question on sincerity as Mikan noted it on Luna's tone, facial expression, and nonverbal cues. Natsume said that Luna was a good friend and she believed that judgment and if the time was right and destiny permitted it, maybe they could be friends in the future.

"Apology accepted," said Mikan, smiling a little.

Luna broke into a smile before nodding in satisfaction. "I ambushed Natsume yesterday and asked him to be friends again with me. He did not agree yet but I am hoping that someday he will."

"I'll be glad if you become friends again because you used to be his rock. There is a certain way that you understand him, different than us."

Mikan agreed so easily that it intensified Luna's guilt feelings. Looking down to her feet and imagining the future of the brunette in the hands of Kaoru, Luna looked up again and said, "You're too good, Mikan Sakura."

Quickly, Mikan shook her head. She wanted to tell Luna that she was not good , far from it but she remained wordless. After a few seconds, Mikan faked a cough to ease her composure. "No, I'm not. I just don't want to be jealous over anything when there is really nothing to be paranoid of," she said with a giggle, "Does this mean you're giving up on him?"

"My feelings will remain but I won't act on it unless you hurt him," Luna remarked with a laugh but her eyes showed the gravity and seriousness of the statement.

Mikan accepted the challenge. "Thank you very much but that won't happen."

The two girls knew they finally reached an agreement and settled with a truce. Luna accepted defeat, seeing Mikan a worthy adversary and someone who could make Natsume happy. It made her feel lighter and sad at the same time, the perfect mixture of bittersweet. They said that seeing the person you like happy would already make you happy and that was true in this case. But, somewhere along the road Luna traversed, there was still this lingering regret. If only she understood Natsume better and opened her mind without holding onto bias, maybe she kept her friends and the person she liked. It hurt Luna to remember the wrong decisions she made but there was no use in living on disappointment and instead she decided to move forward.

"I may stepped backward now but I am telling you that Kaoru still has me in her mind to be Natsume's partner. I don't think that will change in the long run."

"Even if you tell her?" Mikan asked.

Luna shook her head. "Kaoru does not stop until she get what she wants."

Gritting her teeth, Mikan reminded herself to be stronger and remain firm even if meet Kaoru sooner. "Which reminds me, did you put that on my locker?" asked Mikan when she remembered the paper she crumbled not so long ago.

Luna raised her eyebrows. "What? I don't even know where your locker is."

Since Mikan could not come up with anyone who would do such thing, she gave up the idea. "Oh, okay. Forget about it. It may be a prank anyways."

"What are you reading?" Hotaru asked because she became distracted with Mikan's fidgeting.

Mikan looked up when she heard the question. She ended reading the article on her phone before closing it completely. "Natsume's playing a lot of NBA 2K20 which is so abrupt so I am reading some reviews if it really is an addictive game and how to play it," said Mikan.

Hotaru snorted on how mundane the problem was but now she knew who Ruka played that game with. They were currently in the study area filled with the chitchats of the students, aiming to finish their own respective tasks. Hotaru focused on her laptop to double check their council report before sending it to Ruka and before Ruka sent it to Sumire for printing and binding. Months like this proved to be a busy season for council members because of the important Annual Meeting of the stakeholders. They worked harder and more accurate in order to reach the target of summarizing all the activities they hosted this year and the upcoming events that they would be organizing complete with proposal, budget, plan, and expected outcome. A random question from Mikan sprung earlier if the council was doing fine or if there was any problem but Hotaru only replied that the reports they were making made them crazy already. Mikan only laughed at her reply.

By careful observation, Hotaru knew that her best friend was in her happiest state ever since her relationship with Natsume jumpstarted and to say that Hotaru did not see this coming was a bluff. Ever since Mikan realized that what she had for Ruka was just plain crush, she started giving Natsume an undivided attention which Hotaru always noticed. Simple things like Natsume reminding Mikan to bring an umbrella, their closeness in Shirahama, and the most obvious display of their longing for each other: The Photography Club fiasco. Hotaru was happy for her best friend because she finally found someone who accepted her whatever her past was but worrying if Mikan would stay in this state for a long time bugged Hotaru.

"My brother is finally coming this weekend and bearing with good news, I hope."

A deep sigh was released by Mikan. "I just want this rift with my father to end."

This rift of nine years put a toll on everyone involved. It was excruciatingly a painful and emotional process and to think that the accident happened so long ago, they only made little progress in general. But, Hotaru could not be more proud of Mikan's change especially in the way the she expressed herself like it was safe to say that Mikan was finally healed and the only thing left to achieve complete freedom from the tragedy was the forgiveness of her father. Hotaru always bothered Subaru to update her of the status of the Sakuras back in Akita and the latest she heard bore a positive and a negative connotation.

"Mikan, he says Youichi is asking about you and Uncle Izumi is not taking it well."

Whenever Youichi came in topic, Mikan drifted to the sadness in her heart. She always felt great loss of time and opportunity when it came to Youichi, her own brother who did not know her. Izumi hating on Mikan almost killed the light inside her and the grimacing truth that he concealed to Youichi her real identity never failed to put her in distress. The ironic thing was Mikan never felt proud to introduce herself as his sister. It was as if she carried this shame on her unconsciously that every time she wanted to tell Youichi, she got cold feet and settled for a mere sight. If Mikan really thought about it, she never made a tremendous effort for Youichi to know her because she did not want to be known as the sister who killed their mother.

"Oh. He could not find out, right? I mean we just saw each other one time." More like several times.

"He has the right to know," Hotaru said.

"When the time is right."

Because Mikan did not want to be on Izumi's wrong side even more, it was best if he would willingly introduced them as siblings. Fixing her relationship with Izumi indeed meant that her family would be fixed as well. The brunette gave Hotaru a reassuring smile to which she just nodded.

"The investor that my brother talks about is opening up two branches of this café outside Tokyo and is in search of unique pieces to fill the store so they have hopes. If the presentation goes well than they might not relocate."

Mikan tapped her fingers on the table. "I wonder what kind of café it is."

Hotaru shrugged her shoulders and returned her attention to her revision process. She glanced once again at Mikan who continued reading on her phone. It seemed like Mikan had no idea on who was this investor. Hotaru always found ways to secrets but even if she knew Natsume had something to do about this investor, she was not entirely sure who the investor was and she doubted that it was Natsume himself. After an e-mail from Ruka popped on her screen, Hotaru formed an idea on her mind to ask him later on the wrap up party. There was no way Ruka would not answer her. They planned to end the hectic week with a celebration. As to where, it was still undecided but most of the members favored one place which Hotaru felt was going to be endgame. The place was decided a few minutes later when the owner of the house finally made an offer.

"Thanks for pushing that train ride, Hotaru," said Mikan. She talked about the one wherein Natsume accompanied her in Akita.

Talking to Mikan felt rare for Hotaru nowadays because they were always surrounded by their friends or they were in the middle of some drama. Only times like this they were able to talk about personal and deep things which rooted their friendship. "I will always support what will make you happy," said Hotaru with a small smile.

Mikan took out her widest smile, her heart severely touched by the honesty and unyielding support that Hotaru never failed to give. It was rare for them to have a heart to heart talk nowadays because of being always surrounded by their friends or they found themselves in the middle of a drama so it was good to have peaceful scenes like this. Their conversation went to varying directions, talking about random things surrounding school.

Twice Mikan's phone beeped to which she smiled. Hotaru knew the very reason of that smile so she was not surprised when Natsume Hyuuga came into the scene a few minutes later, holding a large bag which contained sports equipment. His school service had been running smoothly despite being with the members of the Sports Club and if there was any change in him, it would be that he took notice on how basketball worked and had been learning it. At first, it seemed like a crazy idea to put Natsume together with Daichi and the rest of the biggest club in Alice Academy. Hotaru, as fellow member of the council, saw it a potential to add fuel to the fire or a chance to spy on the club but Ruka dismissed all their evil thoughts and hoped for the best. So far, Natsume reported no ill doings from the club and instead formed a bond with the members in their own little way.

"Polka," said Natsume and nodded at Hotaru as a form of greeting.

Mikan turned her head. "Hey," she greeted with a distinct fondness in her voice.

"Where are you two going?" asked Hotaru.

"I offered to help him," Mikan replied, "Because Captain Daichi might eat him alive."

Natsume rolled his eyes. "Not in a million years. Come on?"

"Bye, Hotaru!" bade Mikan as she waved her hands excitedly.

Then, like it was the most natural thing in the world, these two walked side by side with Mikan starting the conversation by asking Natsume if he was ready to give some comments on the way the basketball players did their play but he shrugged his shoulders and decided not to meddle anymore unless his opinion was asked. A couple of times Natsume narrowed his eyes to Mikan's stories about her days with the Sports Club, dragging along names belonging to the male species that he knew nothing about and suddenly mentioned the physical challenges they competed in Shirahama which he admitted was a good memory. He listened to her talk and talk as he kept on absorbing the jolliness in her voice. Natsume thought that something good happened because Mikan's face looked brighter than ever.

In the midst of their slow walk to the gym, Mikan ached for a drink and suggested they stopped in the nearest vending machine which was not hard to find. She asked him what he liked which was an opening to test her how much she knew him. Natsume smirked and challenged her judgment. Mikan crossed her arms while thinking deeply on the tricky challenge Natsume proposed. She scanned the choices and picked the peach iced tea in can which was her favorite then pushed another button on the electrolyte drink. The drinks were produced one by one and as Mikan procured it, she gave a wide smirk while handing Natsume the bottle.

"Because you are simple yet full of substance," Mikan answered the lingering question in his head.

Natsume accepted the drink wholeheartedly and made a cheers with Mikan. They simultaneously took a gulp on their respective drinks and consumed almost half of their bottles. Moving in sync was never their thing but at that moment, they closed the caps of their drink and smiled at each other. Natsume noticed drops of the cold tea just above Mikan's lips and when he was about to wipe it, she halted him by raising her hand.

"A girl should be able to wipe her own mess," Mikan declared strongly as she wiped the remaining droplets in her mouth using her hand.

The act amused Natume, giggled slightly on Mikan's funny way of showing independence. He nodded in agreement with her statement and they resumed their walking once again. He loved her company, never remembered a time when he got bored by being with her. Every moment with Mikan was an adventure and a discovery that even after knowing her deepest secrets, Natsume found himself stunned by her actions sometimes. For almost every day that they were together, it still felt not enough as they missed each other's presence when the nightfall came and their only means of communication was through phones.

"Polka."

Mikan rested her intertwined hands on her back, still holding her tea bottle, and kept on walking. "Yes?"

"I talked to Aoi."

Mikan beamed with the news. "Really? That's great!" she exclaimed.

The reaction was what Natsume expected. The corner of his lips moved upward a little to show that he too thought that it was a great development. "I think she understands but she refused to help," he said.

When Natsume asked Aoi for his help directly, he was almost sure that she would agree but Aoi shook her head and said she could not betray Kaoru. It did disappoint Natsume because this was the first time in years that he asked her for something. Aoi did not say a word for a minute, trapped in her thoughts and feelings of guilt. She stared at Natsume and apologized to him that even if she liked to help, her loyalty was with her mother. Natsume struggled to accept the rationale at first but his mind cleared after a while. Having Aoi on their side was not a success and Natsume even wondered if this was a game which could be won by the one who had the most number of backups. Before Aoi left, she told one more advice and that was to stay strong but never forget to be conscious on the people around them. She even said that even if her loyalty was on Kaoru, she promised not to meddle with Mikan anymore. At least on that, Natsume felt reassured.

"Well, I am not surprised. She seems pretty loyal to your mother," said Mikan with no hint of fear or disappointment in her voice. She stretched her arms and yawned, saying, "Luna talked to me and told me about her offer of friendship."

Natsume got a glimpse on what put Mikan in a good mood. She got to talk to Luna and maybe they settled their own affairs. An idea formed in Natsume's mind, smirking as he said, "You have nothing to be jealous about, Polka."

"Who says I am?" Mikan retorted, pinching him in the shoulder, "Anyways, I told her that it is fine if she's sincere about it."

One thing Natsume loved about Mikan was her kindness. "Sure as long as it's okay with you," he replied while his fingers were pinching her cheeks the whole time he said that.

Mikan faked a frown. "We're almost there!" she exclaimed then glared evilly at Natsume, "I cannot wait to see Captain Daichi and Tsubasa-senpai!" she added.

"What? Tsubasa what?" Natsume asked in disbelief. He never heard the name of Tsubasa escaped in her mouth until now. "Wait, are you close to him?" His tone rose a little when he asked that.

Natsume's reaction was exactly what Mikan precipitated to see. She continued her tirade and teasing to confuse her boyfriend even more. "Just very recently, I helped him to confess to the girl he likes from the other school."

"And I never knew about this?" Natsume hissed.

Mikan acted innocent. "You never asked."

This time Natsume glared at her and fully stopped walking. "Because I never saw you with him."

Mikan laughed, stole the heavy bag on Natsume and ran towards near the entrance to the gym. "That's because you can't watch me 24/7 and I am fairly acquainted to him a long time ago so it was not hard for us to be friends."

"F-friends?" Natsume regretted the way he said that. He knew that Mikan told the truth and at the same time, teasing him but still he was so affected.

Another fit of giggles succumbed Mikan when she heard Natsume buckled on his word. "Stop stammering. It's so unlike you."

"Another first time because of you, Polka. Because I don't do well in surprises like this," Natsume scowled darkly.

Natsume's reaction was classic, memorable in every bit that Mikan wanted to take a picture and display it on her room so that each time she felt down, she would just look at Natsume's flabbergasted expression then her mood would lift. This was her payment with the scene he caused in the library, earning her a sermon from Miss Memiya. Natsume's history with Tsubasa was only made known to Mikan last week when she finally pushed her senpai to be direct with Misaki Harada, the girl Tsubasa had been trying to date since time immemorial. Tsubasa congratulated Mikan with her relationship with Natsume and then their trip to memory lane began. One story Mikan could not find in her heart to forget was Natsume and Tsubasa's display of competitiveness in dodge ball on this family affair they celebrated over four years ago. Their relatives at first cheered on how fired up they acted during the game until they realized that it ended another day to show their unspoken enmity.

"Oh, grow up. We became friends first before we did," Mikan said in finality.

Natsume tried his very best to calm himself down and only glared at the laughing Mikan Sakura. Their funny moment got interrupted when Tsubasa, in flesh, appeared from the entrance of the gym, holding a megaphone, looking so cheerful and athletic wearing his sports attire consisted of shorts and red jersey shirt. Sending death glares to the jolly senior, Natsume was left ignored even though Tsubasa was well aware of the horrifying aura sent to him.

"Mikan-chan!" greeted Tsubasa.

Another figure appeared in the scene in the form of Daichi Himura. He greeted Mikan with an astonished emotion. "Sakura, hello. We knew it's you from the voice."

"Hello! How's the practice?" Mikan asked cheerily.

Daichi answered, "Good so far. The meet is tomorrow and I think we're all set."

"I wish you good luck."

"Thank you!" said Tsubasa, "Come watch us practice?" he asked.

The four of them entered the gym officially and viewed an intense practice game between Team A and Team B. The captain and vice-captain went back to their positions, engaging in an interactive discussion with the coaching staff. Mikan knew little about basketball but her knowledge was enough to understood the current situation of the practice. She noticed that Natsume had not said a word since they came here so she could not help but talked to him about it. Natsume felt a little betrayed and disbelief with Mikan and Tsubasa's out of the blue friendship which was not out of the blue after all.

Mikan jabbed Natsume by the elbow and she knew then that his attention was all to her. "What do you usually do here? It's strange enough that you get to assigned to a club which you do not have the greatest relationship with," Mikan started the conversation.

"It's not so bad actually. I am learning a lot from them."

Mikan nodded. "Hence, the NBA 2K20," she muttered.

Natsume wondered what she talked about at first before getting what she meant. He played the game to refresh his memory of basketball since he was lazy to do the sport himself. They watched as both teams ran from the left to the right side of the court and vice versa, stealing the ball, jumping to the highest peak, shouting inside the court, and sending hand signals as form of communication. Mikan looked intently at the game, obviously being entertained at the game before her. Natsume went to Daichi to ask him what should he do this afternoon and the captain replied that performing the same routine of work was enough. It meant updating the scores, timing the players, counting the fouls, and cleaning the gym after.

For a little while, Mikan caught up with the other members of the Sports Club before she helped Natsume with the cleaning. They threw rugs at each other when they were on the height of their childishness but the work was done quicker with the help of the extra person. While stacking chairs, Mikan observed Natsume's conversation with Daichi. The captain finally asked his opinion from watching the games for days now. Natsume's detailed opinion impressed everyone. He noticed small things that others did not pay attention to, things that looked small but when given solution, improved the team twice. A rare scene of cooperation from the Sports Club captain and Student Council vice president influenced positivity on everyone. Natsume had gained the support of the big club for next year's election, in a way.

Natsume surrendered the gym keys to the same person he gave it to the other day. Mikan extremely felt proud of what she saw today. She only looked at him with bright eyes while Natsume gave a confused reaction.

"Let's do that driving lesson, Natsume."

Natsume raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure?" he asked.

"Well, if you can mingle with the Sports Club well, research about basketball because of them, play NBA because of them, I think that's effort and I can't let you be the only one who exerts effort."

A small smile escaped Natsume's lips. "Okay. Let's get you that student driver license."

Applying for a license was a tremendous task that required official driving lessons and a lot of knowledge on road safety. To supplement Mikan's upcoming lessons, Natsume proposed that they start learning as early as today. Nobody would get hurt if they practiced on a field, far from people. Mikan dejected the idea primarily but agreed with Natsume later on because she knew she was in safe hands. After school, they searched on the nearest empty field and stopped by a drive thru because Mikan's stomach grumbled. A mix of nervousness and excitement filled Mikan's existence that day. Cars scarred her life for almost a decade and not until this year that she learned to trust capable drivers. Taking that long of a time to overcome a phobia was a distinct achievement so driving a car might send Subaru to the moon from ecstasy.

They told Subaru via phone call and asked permission. The doctor had no second thoughts and even told them that since they were old enough to make their own decisions, it was okay not to ask him anymore. It was part of Mikan's independent phase. Mikan looked reassuringly at Natsume, telling him that she was ready for this development in her life. Natsume kissed her in the forehead to express how proud he was of her and then they drove to their destination.

"Burger. Fries. Drinks." Natsume handed their orders to Mikan.

"Thank you!" Mikan exclaimed and went for the fries first. "So, where do we head to?"

"On a wide space where you can't destroy anything in case you forget to press the brake."

Mikan pouted. "Gee. That sounds so relieving. Do I get any factual lesson for this before I literally drive?"

"Here is great," Natsume announced after fifteen minutes of going in circles. They stopped by the field in the border of Tokyo with the sun almost setting. Mikan scanned the place and evaluated it as a safe one to practice a nuisance driver. Natsume turned off the engine and bit on Mikan's burger. "Okay, get out, Polka."

Mikan saluted, saying, "Roger that."

Standing a meter away from the car, Natsume started his lecture with crossed arms. Mikan waited patiently for his words while sipping the last drops of her drink. When Natsume displayed his intelligence, skill, and natural talent of teaching, he looked more handsome and appealing than he already did. Mikan felt distracted while watching him but refused to act like a fangirl so she restrained her giddiness and listened intently to his every word.

"What you see here is my favorite car which I was able to buy by playing stocks," Natsume began. One day, Ioran taught him how to invest and play in the stock market. Under his father's closed watch, he was able to profit in his investments after half a year but when the council worked piled up, he rarely visited the market but sometimes played his ways.

Mikan snorted. "Wow, no pressure on that or anything."

Natsume smirked. "Before you hold the steering wheel and cause me dizziness, you must first know how to check your machine."

Mikan nodded. "You're good with this," she commented.

Natsume showed Mikan how to open hood and pointed on all the essential things she needed to check before commencing a drive regardless of the longevity. "Acronym is BLOWBAG. Let's open this up and I'll tell you what makes this car run," he said.

The flood of information overwhelmed Mikan and asked Natsume several times to repeat what he said and the purpose of mentioned meaning of the mnemonic. Natsume explained the purpose of the different fluids of the car and why it was vital to maintain them at a safe level. He taught her how to check the oil level and asked her for a return demonstration. Mikan sloppily pulled the stick and returned it to its place. They encircled the car to check for the tires and lectured her about the proper tire pressure. Natsume's explanation made Mikan think if he was secretly working as a driving instructor in his free time. Next, Natsume discussed about the lights, when to use it and its other purpose. His pace was not that rapid that Mikan was able to follow most of the things he said.

In Mikan's mind, driving was not that simple. It was not just pressing on the gas and avoiding other cars along the way. They found themselves on the inside of the car after Natsume gave her the key. Mikan stared at the keys for a second before accepting it, breathing in confidence.

"Everything I said is essential. Make it a habit to check all those especially if you're going for a long drive. And now, I want you to turn on the engine. Back in the days you have to insert a key but now just press that button and make sure that the remote is within range. Since this is an automatic transmission, you don't have to know yet the manual way of doing things. Are you okay?"

Mikan smiled nervously. "I'll be alright," she replied.

"Push the button," Natsume commanded and the car engine roared. He noticed Mikan's low confidence on that simple push which was an expectation. "Find your most comfortable position, adjust your seat if you want to. Not leaning and not too far." Mikan followed his instructions and searched for the adjusters of the seat. "Put the gear in D which means drive. Right now we're on P which means Park. Remember that even without you pressing the gas, this car will run once it is on D."

Mikan extended her neck muscled and tapped on the steering wheel. "Got it. Here it goes."

A loud cheer erupted in the car when Mikan was able to move the car. They only went in straight line with occasional turns to encircle the field. The lesson lasted an hour until it rained heavily and since driving in such weather condition required different practice, they ended the lesson. Deciding that they needed not to hurry, they let the rain passed for a few minutes before deciding to head back to the city proper. Natsume checked the time in his phone. He sat on the back seat, staring at the moist window, his feet up on the bended passenger seat while Mikan hummed in a tune, her head resting on his lap. He played with her hair and enjoyed her tune.

"This is nice. Just watching the rain."

Natsume broke out on his glimpse on the window. "Are you sure you're fine?" he asked. He was worried the whole time he taught Mikan how to drive.

"Scary but I like your idea. But, I don't see myself driving my own car in the future."

Shrugging his shoulders, he said, "Well, it is a practical skill you can use in the future so it's still nice to learn how to."

Mikan looked up, caught a glimpse of his features. "The future sounds scary."

"It is."

"I didn't think that you would be scared of something," Mikan quickly said.

"I'm scared of losing you," Natsume blurted and noticed the absence of Mikan's comeback until he laid eyes on her and saw that she was looking at him. "Why'd you become mute? Ahh, I think I know why."

He made her heart flutter again. This was the first time they had a conversation about the future and the rain made it more sentimental. Mikan hated the idea of losing Natsume, too. She hugged him to let him know that and he hugged her back, caressing her back. He caught her sweet smell again despite the long day and Mikan memorized the fragrance of his perfume the same way. The future had a tendency of being scary because it remained to be unknown but it was not hard to face it with bravery especially if you were with someone you loved. The rain kept on pouring, the sound of its droplets echoing inside the car. It looked so gloomy on the outside but these two filled each other with love and sunshine.

Not long after, the rain gradually lost its strength and Natsume decided that it was already safe to drive back. They transferred to the seats in front. Natsume started the engine and encoded their destination which happened to be the address of his house.

"Won't you take me home first?" Mikan asked in confusion.

"Let's have dinner first," Natsume said.

With an incredulous look and resistance, Mikan immediately rejected the offer. "No way I'm eating in your house. What if Kaoru is there? Or Aoi suddenly appears?"

"Relax," Natsume hushed, "I wouldn't invite you if I know they're gonna be there. Those two are in Hokkaido."

Mikan did not find that a guarantee. "Still, no way! It's like entering the enemy's lair."

Natsume snorted. "It's still my house. Come on, Polka. I just want to pay you back for the dinner last time."

He looked so adorable when he said that that Mikan had to shake her head to not be influenced by his striking features. "You're not planning anything funny, are you?" Mikan's question came in like an accusation.

"Don't worry. If I have any plans on doing something with you, I plan not to do it at my house."

Mikan blushed heavily, yelling, "You pervert!"

Natsume could not contain his laughter anymore.

The first time Mikan went into Natsume's house was to deliver the papers he needed to sign which he forgot in school. They were not in good terms then so it was awkward when Kaoru invited her for dinner. That brief encounter cemented the way Kaoru viewed her and it came out unfair for Mikan. She never desired to set her foot on that house again until Natsume asked today. As Mikan stole glances to Natsume while travelling, she knew he had a reason. It could be light or deep but he had something in mind. Whatever it was, Natsume did not divulge it and Mikan did not push him to tell. Entering the private village already felt extravagant for Mikan but when she looked at Natsume, the boy was so simple and humble. They passed by several houses in different styles, most of them faithful to the Japanese style of making a home.

It was only one time but Mikan remembered the details of the entrance of the house, the long driveway, the dimmed lights surrounding the garden. Dinner in Natsume's house used to be a nightmare but maybe he planned to change it this time. Someone opened the door for them, the same thing when Mikan first came. The white painting of the house and the gold embellishments looked brighter and cleaner than the last time Mikan was here, they looked newly painted. Well, the gigantic house looked well-maintained. Each space filled with art and more than enough space that it almost felt empty. Mikan suddenly remembered a silly rumor about the house to which she squeaked.

"What?" Natsume asked, changing his shoes to slippers.

"Is it true that the gold in this house is made of real gold?" Mikan asked, feeling silly herself.

Natsume heard that rumor before and he found it stupid and an idea born from fantasy. With a blank look, he answered, "Definitely fiction."

Mikan nodded and continued on wandering her eyes throughout the place. "I knew it," she proudly stated then widened her eyes when she saw her best friend crossing the room with a plate of food in her hand, "Hotaru? What are you doing here?"

"It's not always that Hyuuga invites us to his humungous house so we can finally end our task of the week," replied Hotaru then walked forward.

Mikan glanced at her side and saw that Natsume was already gone to his friends. She followed Hotaru's footsteps earlier, careful not to break anything or cause unnecessary commotion. A second later, Mikan found out that the whole gang was present in Natsume's not so humble abode. They were already roasting meat, eating, playing games by the garden. Sumire was running after Koko who protectively held a stick filled with marshmallow on his hand. If Mikan was not friends with them, she would automatically think that they were acting childish. Hotaru placed the plate she was holding earlier in the table she shared with Ruka who tried to figure out how to operate the party poppers until he accidentally twisted it and confetti lavished the food. Ruka earned a smack from Hotaru for it.

"That Natsume," Mikan muttered under her breath.

Two tents were set up, one for the grilling and table of food and drinks and another for their own tables. Mikan slowly stepped on the well-maintained grass of the garden. It was autumn season and yet the trees and plants surrounding the garden still bore dark green leaves. Her presence was greeted with several waves and smiles from the gang. Mikan did not say a word for a while, not knowing where to place herself. By the looks of it, everyone knew that an intimate party was going to happen except her. Even Natsume decided to hide it from her to the point of inviting her for a simple dinner. Mikan laughed at herself because she anticipated that the dinner was on the line of romantic and quiet but when she realized that Natsume was not the kind of person who did that, an acceptance loomed in her.

"Hi, Mikan! Where'd you come from?" asked Yuu.

Mikan ran to Yuu's side. "Natsume and I went for a drive," she answered.

"Guys, the barbeque is grilling!" Koko announced.

Mikan walked beside Natsume who stared at her with a wide grin. "How in the world did you arrange this?" Mikan asked with suspicious eyes.

"You know that every time we achieve something, we wind up after. So, I offered the place to Ruka and Ruka asked Imai. Imai, of course, asked for Shouda and if we have Shouda, we have Koko," Natsume clarified then shoved a sandwich on Mikan's mouth.

Mikan glared at his action but chewed the sandwich slowly nonetheless. "I always thought you use this stadium of a house for parties but it never really crossed my mind that you can hold a mini party like this without the approval of your mother."

"I have enough freedom to decide on things like that," said Natsume, "Want to tour around?"

Hesitation sneaked to Mikan until she realized that it was actually harmless and others knew the geography of the house better than hers. She nodded and followed Natsume's lead. He named every room on the first floor wherein the dining was located, Kaoru's office, a room meant to be a library. Mikan was most amazed with the kitchen because it had every equipment she dreamt to buy whenever she visited an appliance store. Her fondness of the area was instantly detected by Natsume. He then led her to the second floor wherein their rooms were located. For the most part, the second floor rarely got inhabited because Kaoru was always travelling, Natsume liked to spend some days in his father's house, and Aoi already moved out permanently.

Mikan traced the hollowness of the big place, a feeling that money or lavishness could never erase. Natsume might be used in waking up only to see the staff of the house serving him and watch him eat breakfast but Mikan refused to live that way. No wonder Natsume liked lunch time the best time since it was the only meal he shared with the most honest and genuinely concerned people in his life. The doors of each room were all similar so it was hard to tell if it was Natsume's room or the master's bedroom. Natsume walked to the farthest left, passing by painting and artwork his parents personally chose when they built the house.

"That is Aoi's room when she visits," Natsume said.

"Does she still use it when she comes home?"

"Yes, she does. This used to be my parents' room but now no one uses it. Kaoru moved to the guest room a long time ago."

"Maybe the divorce with Ioran still haunts her."

Natsume thought that of a valid reason but Kaoru never verbalized it. The problem with his mother was she always acted tough when there was nothing wrong in showing vulnerability from time to time. At least by displaying her weak sides, she would look more human. The carpeted floor made their steps soundless. From the second floor, Mikan saw better how grand the house was. She looked at Natsume who showed familiarity in every space.

"And this is my room," said Natsume and twisted the door know, allowing Mikan to enter first.

Natsume turned on the many lights of his private space. The walls painted with a dark shade of olive green. Two lamps on both sides of Natsume's king-sized bed covered with white sheets and topped with blank comforters. A low-rise cabinet containing all his books occupied the left side of the room while his awards neatly stored on the same style of cabinet on the right side. There was an extra space left for the television and his video game gadgets splattered on the floor. Mikan wandered around the room, checking out the photos framed on his table and top of the drawers. On her left was another room which she bet was the walk-in closet. Natsume's room was her room combined with the living room. She raised an eyebrow at him to act as if she were judging the interior.

"It's so neat and boyish," Mikan said, "You have so many books. I didn't know you love reading."

"You have to do a better job in getting to know me then, Polka."

Mikan giggled then realized that Natsume sat on his bed. She had a silly idea and jumped onto Natsume's bed which was at least three times softer than her. It created waves in the bed and Natsume buried her under pillow, laughing immediately. Mikan struggled to escape Natsume's entrapment and jumped onto the bed, declaring that they needed to test how sturdy it was. Natsume's body followed the upward and downward motion of Mikan's jumping until he dragged her by the arm, making the two of them lying on the bed. Mikan's stomach hurt from laughing, clutching her clothes covering her abdomen while Natsume waited for her amusement to die down. Staring at each other, they realized that they were alone in the bedroom and left their friends downstairs. Mikan got up first, felt the need to blush but managed to hide it from Natsume.

"Let's go back?" suggested Mikan, avoiding Natsume's stare.

"Let's go somewhere this weekend. I want to show you something," Natsume invited.

Mikan displayed suspicion initially. "We're not going to practice driving, are we?"

Natsume threw another pillow at her face. "Use your imagination," he said and they both went back to their friends.

Ruka paid careful attention to Mikan and Natsume when they went back to the party, teasing each other. The gang's energy was reaching its highest point with all their stomachs full. Koko and the others assembled in the living room and set up the place for Just Dance. Two teams were formed and Mikan drew the loudest cheer when she impressed everyone with her dance moves. Everyone looked like they were having fun and Ruka did not want to be a party pooper but it was usual that during times like this, a bad thing was about to happen. He buried the worry behind to focus on the celebration in front of him. God, they spent so much work on doing that 300-page report. Good thing that this was his last year in the academy and he could finally passed on the demands of being the Student Council President to the next most suitable person. He really liked it to be Natsume and he knew that the Hyuuga had the most chances of winning in the next election.

"Our best friends look happy," Ruka could not help but mumble.

Hotaru, who was beside him all this time, followed his gaze at agreed with his observation. She was currently devouring the thick fries dipped in mayonnaise as she asked, "Ruka, is Glassroots expanding?"

"A branch in Kyoto will open late next year and another one in Sapporo in in the works," answered Ruka mindlessly.

"Hence, the need for suppliers specifically the décor?" Hotaru asked with a smirk.

Breaking from his enchantment from watching Mikan and Natsume, he glanced at Hotaru who stared at him with inquisitive eyes. "Hotaru, what are you trying to say?"

"If you're planning on something and want to keep it a surprise, make sure that it does not affect anyone."

Ruka gulped. He eyed Natsume who was busy choosing the next song for the game. Sweat formed on the edges of Ruka's face as Hotaru deepened her knowing gaze. "Hopefully, nothing of that sort happens," he said nervously.

Hotaru did not push the subject furthermore. "And you have barbeque sauce in your nose," she remarked.

"What?!" Ruka immediately wiped his mouth. He hated it when his guiltiness showed in every action.

"Here," Hotaru offered a napkin to wipe the sauce, "It's okay to help Mikan in your own way but it is better if you ask her first instead of working behind the scenes."

Ruka nodded while staring at Hotaru's orbs. "He would tell her. Thanks."

"Hey, lovebirds! Join us in Just Dance!" Sumire invited and dragged Ruka and Hotaru to the real party.

Mikan wiggled her legs happily as she waited for the principal to review her school service record. Her sanction came to an end and serving in the library was both fun and enriching at the same time. Also, in all of the students in the academy, Mikan only shared that opinion because the rest found the library sanction the most boring of all. The sound of papers being flipped excited Mikan until Kazumi Yukihara reached the final page. He read each word and recommendation meticulously until he stamped it with approval and signed it with his expensive pen. Removing his glasses, he cleared his throat before imparting some wise words to his student or at least he tried to.

The principal looked weary, far from his innocent and elated nature whenever Mikan came by for transactions. His eyes had dark bags under, face not that bright, he looked similar to a dehydrated patient. Add to that, his stooped posture glorified his lack of energy. Mikan slowly erased the smile on her face when she noticed that the principal did not share the same sentiment. She wondered if something went wrong to the annual meeting which happened earlier. The mood in the office expressed gloominess and so did his look when he finally addressed Mikan.

"That marks the completion of your school service, Mikan Sakura."

Mikan straightened her back. "Thank you much. I really had fun doing this."

Principal Yukihara groaned and looked down, wiping his eyes and wore his glasses again. "I don't think the punishment will be this light the next time you do this."

His usual way of warning lightly the student remained but gone was the long tirade and high pitched voice he typically used when he talked to a student. Mikan stood up as the principal did the same. He opened a drawer and retrieved a thin brown envelope.

"I'll keep that in mind. Goodbye and don't stress yourself so much."

"That may be impossible," Kazumi whispered to himself, sighing in penitence, then gave Mikan the envelope, "Can you please stop by at the conference hall to deliver this envelope? There's only one person there so you cannot misdeliver this."

Mikan examined the envelope when held it and felt like the contents must be so thin because it was weightless. "Sure."

"I'm sorry, Miss Sakura," Kazumi said.

Mikan felt bad of the apology the principal gave her and dismissed his worries. "Oh, no. It's totally fine for me to deliver this!" she exclaimed and took the envelope. She bowed once again and left good prayers for the exhausted principal.

An odd feeling retained on Mikan as she made her way to the conference hall. The principal acted indifferently compared to the many times she encountered him. Mikan shook her head, refusing to bow down to the effects of stress. She had abundant stressors in her life that could trigger her weakness at any given moment but she knew that leaning on the positivity and thinking of a solution were the best problem solvers. She bowed to the security guarding the hall and asked permission to go inside. The officer asked for her name and let her in. After opening two more doors, she finally reached the conference room, pushing the gigantic door after attempting to knock on it. Mikan timidly entered the cold room, not astonished to see the woman leaning on the other side of the table that could hold at least 30 people.

There was confusion if Mikan would just leave the envelope on the table or hand it over to the woman. She figured out that her task would only be completed once she was sure that message was delivered to the right person. Slowly, she stepped forward to talk to the woman.

"Hello? I have the envelope from the principal. Where should I leave this?"

"Right there is good," the woman replied.

Mikan halted on her footsteps midway. "Oh, okay."

The woman changed her mind just as Mikan landed the envelope on the table. "No. Can you open it for me instead?" she asked.

Mikan liked to refuse because the content must be private and not for her eyes but the weird request could help the woman. Her thoughts ran as far as to she might be blind therefore could not read but shelved the idea as farfetched. She pulled the red string and peeked if there was indeed paper on this lightweight envelope and Mikan saw one. She pulled it out carefully and saw the familiar pattern of the paper she crumpled a few days ago. Mikan's gaze immediately darkened, horrified with this prank that might not be a prank anymore.

To: Narumi Sakura

Adviser, Student Council

Thru: Ruka Nogi

President, Student Council

Dear Student Council,

Greetings!

This letter is written with the intent of informing you about the latest Board meeting which concerns your organization. Annually, The Board conducts assessment on clubs and organizations that are deemed essential in running Alice Academy. For years, the Student Council proved to be an indispensable body in implementing school regulations and organizing school functions. Alice Academy takes notes of the great effort and efficiency this batch of council shown this year. However, after a thorough review and the birth of different organizations within the school, we are having thoughts of removing the council before the school year ends because of its redundant functions which can be accomplished through clubs. The Board wants to disperse the responsibility to the students and make good use of the current clubs that the school has blessed with. Be informed that not only the Student Council went under this review but also other organizations within the school, faculty and student, were included in this proposed change. Any reaction and recommendation upon this matter can be directed to The Board's office.

Sincerely,

Kazumi Yukihara

Principal, High School Division

"This again. Who are you?" Mikan demanded for an answer.

The woman finally turned around, revealing a familiar face and aura of autonomy and superiority. Just like his son and daughter, she had the most fiery eyes, a pale complexion, hair dark as ebony. The fit of her body showed the benefits of attending yoga classes for half a year. Kaoru Hyuuga swayed her hair as she walked towards Mikan, her stilettos gave her more height to tower over the teenager. "Congratulations on trampling my aces. First, Luna then my own daughter, Aoi. I wonder what they saw in you."

"Kaoru Hyuuga," hissed Mikan.

Kaoru smiled in acknowledgement, a bit taunting in Mikan's view. "That letter is being delivered to the Student Council as of this moment."

"No," Mikan cried, "You cannot do that to them or to any club of this school!"

Kaoru looked menacing the moment Mikan raised her voice. "I don't think you can do something to change it unless we come into terms after this conversation."

"Why do you have to involve them?"

No wonder the principal looked so stressed out. It was because that was his name on the letter that was delivered to each of the big organizations in school. Kazumi Yukihara had the potential of facing the biggest student revolt in no time. Mikan gritted her teeth while watching Kaoru being amused in her own game. Facing Kaoru Hyuuga seemed inevitable ever since Aoi came and went with no success in hand. Persistently talking to Mikan about breaking up with Natsume held no threat to her so it was likely that Kaoru would implement and attack with actions. Mikan came up with creative ideas on how Kaoru would start breaking her apart but she never predicted that it would start with removing the Student Council.

It was unheard that a school in Japan ran without a Student Council. Forming one to represent the student was essential, vital, needed, and mandated. But, then again, Alice Academy was not a government institution. It still was under the management of powerful people in private sectors. Even if they had to follow the mandates of the Ministry of Education, the higher ups of Alice Academy still had the full authority on what it wanted to implement in the school. Mikan did her best to think logically, avoiding anything that could aggravate the situation. She imagined the reaction of the affected student council and club members and it mortified her to the core.

"You should have listened to Aoi's warning carefully instead of parading your false courage," Kaoru said, sitting on the swivel chair and crossing her legs, "I asked about you."

"You mean you had me investigated," Mikan drawled.

"If that's how you want to put it," Kaoru mocked, "So, you're from Akita and you recently went there with my son after so many years. Something happened if you suddenly needed to go home and then I found out your father is there, your father and brother flooding in debt. Anytime the bank can take your house, your remaining money, your properties. Financially, you are unstable. You're seeing a psychiatrist since you had an accident involving your whole family resulting to the death of your mother. You are now under the care of Narumi Sakura who happens to be a teacher in this academy. Emotionally, you are also unstable. Quite colorful life you have there, Miss Sakura."

Mikan fought her tears, choking on the forming pressure in her throat. "I told Aoi that if you want to know me, you can ask me directly," she managed to say.

"You see, I don't meet people without knowing the facts of their lives first."

"They say you're charming, brave, strong. Maybe why Natsume is so enamored with you. I wonder how long that will last."

With a glare after being offended with the statement, Mikan replied, "Don't undermine our relationship."

She hated it when others thought so little of her feelings.

"Oh, nothing like that really. If ever, I might be overestimating you, high schoolers," Kaoru jested.

"An adult bullying high schoolers," Mikan retorted, "What a nice story to tell your employees."

Kaoru knew better than to be provoked. "Us Hyuugas live in a life which is not solved by talk or compromise. Imagine if my son ended up with you, what would the world say? How can I be assured that you're not going to pull my son down with you when your depression strikes?"

Mikan darkeningly giggled in frustration. "You really have a wrong notion about mental illness."

"I can spare you, the council, your family if you say you'll no longer contact my son. If you will stay away from him."

The proposition was cliché and Mikan saw it on several television shows. Actually, she almost wished Kaoru would demand of other things. Still, Mikan stayed true to her words to Luna, to Aoi, to Ioran, that she would fight for this. She might be alone in that room with Kaoru but she knew that in this power struggle, she was not alone. Natsume's voice of protectiveness and assurance rang to Mikan's head and it gave her courage to be firm.

With a glare, Mikan declared, "Never."

Kaoru's eyebrows almost met. "I am serious," she emphasized.

Mikan knew that well, nodding repeatedly. She took a nice, deep breath and said, "You can't beat the Student Council. They will always have each other's backs. They will not let this go without a fight. If they fought you once, they can do it again."

A loud chortle escaped Kaoru's mouth. It was indeed entertaining to exchange banters with a high school student who only knew of an ideal life. "Really? What can they do? I think whatever ways they want to play this out, they'll end up losing. Maybe not the council itself but other things."

As always, Mikan's trust with the council stood out. There was fear in her mind and heart for the sake of her friends but she saw them work and achieved things that were almost impossible. The Student Council was not easily broken. "And, my feelings for your son is not superficial. It will take the world before you break us up," Mikan added.

"The world, huh?" Kaoru repeated with bitterness, "So, no bargain? No compromise?"

"I thought compromise is not popular in your family."

Kaoru now saw why Aoi said that Mikan Sakura was a rebel in her words. "Let's see then, Mikan Sakura, where will your naïve courage brings you."

"Instead of wasting your time with me, why don't you use it to reconcile with Natsume?" suggested Mikan.

Kaoru was stunned when she heard that but quickly recovered her state of mind. Natsume told her the same thing and she threw the suggestion right off the bat, believing that she had her own, better way of coming in terms with her son. "Do not tell me what to do," said Kaoru in venom. Each word was gritted through her teeth and Mikan felt the terror. Kaoru did not like it when people tell her what to do. "Now, get out of my sight!" she yelled and Mikan ran.

Mikan ran in the fastest pace she could, bumping students along the way, skipping the steps of the stairs. It did not matter if she tripped once, she just continued her race and other students looked questioningly at her. Her target was to reach the SC office in five minutes with the hope of warning the others. She called Sumire but no answer and the same happened when she called Hotaru. The frustration piled up in her system and let it out by pushing the door of the office with strength but she realized it opened on its own because of Yura. That was when exhaustion crept on Mikan and as she gazed at Yura who was crying, she knew that she was late and the letter reached them.

A hint of regret plastered on Mikan's face as she saw other members of the council. They were in complete attendance and looked like in the middle of a meeting. Natsume looked at her worriedly but Mikan only closed her eyes, grunting to her expense, and addressed Yura.

"What's the matter, Yura?" asked Mikan to the crying Yura but she too felt like crying.

"The Student Council," Yura sniffed, "It's no more!"

When Mikan heard the confirmation, she stared blankly for a moment and dragged Yura back in the office. She owed it to everyone to explain what precipitated the events. Mikan hated herself for thinking about the letter lightly, concluding it as a prank. She had to be vigilant at times like this but her stupidity took over her. She assisted the emotional Yura to rest on the empty seat while she focused her sight to the officers who looked confusingly at her. It was hard to face them and Mikan thought that Kaoru's remark about naïve bravery might be true after all. She cleared her eyes from the impending tears, her fingers fidgeting on the hem of her uniform.

"I'm sorry I had to put you up to this," said Mikan.

"What do you mean, Mikan?" asked Ruka, already feeling impatient with the suspense.

Mikan wanted to answer immediately but her emotion almost defeated her. She opened her mouth, relaxed a little, figure that nothing could be achieved if fear won.

"Was it Kaoru?" It was Natsume who said that and the silence in Mikan said it all.

Depressed looks painted on each of the members of the council. Hotaru waited for Mikan to continue her story, feeling annoyed with the turn of events. Just last night they had the time of their lives and not they had to face another crisis. On the other hand, Sumire searched for Koko's eyes. The concerned look on her face was not meant for the council only but also for Mikan and Natsume who could be accused as people responsible for this school-wide problem. Ruka gathered them quickly in the office the moment the letter was handed to him. He read it with anger and almost wanted direct to the principal on what was his problem but Ruka knew that was not the attitude of a president.

"Natsume, I guess I cannot fight fire with fire. It has started," declared Mikan with a quivering voice, "I saw that letter the other day, thought it was a prank from Luna but when I asked her she denied it. So, I convinced myself that it was really a prank but I talked to Kaoru Hyuuga and this is her doing. In exchange of retracting the decision, I have to cut ties with you, Natsume. I don't think I can do that."

It was a favorable thing that Mikan did not cry in front of them or else Natsume would lost the remaining rational side of his being. He stood up and ran to Mikan, took her by the waist to envelope her in a hug. He did not know the exact details of Mikan's terrible meeting with his mother but he was glad that she refused to follow her despite the threats. Although, that resulted in the upcoming dissolvement of the Student Council, Natsume knew there were many way to turn things around. The rest of the council made a conversation of their own while Mikan hugged him back. The tightness of her arms signaled her frustration and immense feeling of guilt.

"It's not your fault," Natsume whispered in her ear.

"We have to think rationally before we do anything," Ruka announced to the room, remembering that others might react as to what he did earlier.

Yura raised her hand, her face still damped from tears. "But, other clubs are affected as well. Imagine the turmoil that would put in our school!"

Hotaru raised both arms to induce silence on the two parties. She gave each one a look of the neutralizer. "Relax. We can only plan our next move."

They engaged in a lengthy discussion on how they could save the whole school from the school itself. It was nothing like their previous conflicts before but it excited Hotaru that this development could push them to their limits. Not only their camaraderie would be tested but also their respective relationships with Mikan and Natsume. Many suggestions had been said but none of them addressed the real problem. Mikan only watched them working, feeling blameworthy that she had no impressive ideas like them. Natsume's hands never left hers, caressing her and telling her through touch that he was there, always would be there. Yura managed to return to her calm state while Sumire reviewed the provisions of the school.

Surely, that amendment had a flaw and they just had to find a justifiable reason not to change anything. Mikan caught Hotaru's gaze and her best friend smiled at her and mouthed 'Relax' which put Mikan at ease somehow. While Ruka was busy in jotting down all the possible way to counteract the letter, he stopped in the middle and asked for Natsume's opinion. Everyone's focus suddenly turned on Natsume and with a nod he acknowledged Ruka.

"Okay. So, what is our final plan?" Koko asked and everyone just looked at him with grim faces.

End of Chapter

Guys, thank you for all the 100 plus of you who put this story in their favorites and the 147 who follow this. It makes my heart swell. Also, thank you for the responses from last chapter. Thank you for the 300 reviews and counting which you showered SYRB. I think I rushed into publishing the previous chapter so I took my time for this one. Please know that I try to update at least once a month. It really takes time for me to finalize my thoughts so I hope you won't mind and I am flooded with assignments right now, add to that the busyness of the nature of my work. For the remaining chapters, I don't have a rough estimate yet on how many more but I can tell you guys that I still have to write more and I think you can see this story until next year (maybe!). A scene in this chapter was greatly inspired by the epilogue of Chasing You if you happened to notice. : D
