Chapter 24
Not welcomed back into Sam's house. I can handle that. I pretty much have other things to handle in my life. I don't have time for them. I have my own problems and questions that need to be answered. I took a bus ride to the local hospital. I need some answers and I believe the hospital has my answers. It's the second best playground for Angels.
Even though you may run into death, figuratively or maybe run into a devil or but I heard stories from around Heaven but I never ran into Death nor a Devil. I sigh rubbing my hands together. They're itching for some reason and I pray to God nobody sees me but you never know. The hospital is a playground for Angels and Death. I sigh scratching the palm of my hands.
I'm itching to save some lives. I don't do things like that and you want other types of angels. I wouldn't even know how. So, I'll have to pass. I walk through the entrance of the hospital and look around at the all of the people who's sitting in the waiting area. Maybe seeing how I'm here. I can visit a doctor and see how things is actually going and what's going on in my body.
I walk up to the front desk where two female nurses sitting down. One's a young nurse and the other looks a little bit older than the other one. "How can I help you?"The older nurse asks me while writing on a piece of paper. "Hm." I say looking around seeing sick people in the lobby. Seem like I'm on the ER side of the hospital. "Do you need help with anything?" She asks.
"Yeah, I just wanted to be checked out by someone." I say turning back around to the desk. "You're in the right problem. What is your emergency?" She asks getting out a pieces of paper and a clip board putting them together. "No, I don't need that." I say pushing the clipboard back to her while looking at a male doctor who's talking to some people.
"You'll need to fill out of the paper work than we can go from there. What is your emergency?" She asks again this time putting the clipboard on the desk. "I just want to be looked out by a doctor." I say still looking at the doctor. He finally make eye contact but looks back to the person who's he talking too. "What is your problem?" She asks me again as people in the lobby.
I don't answer the question as I notice the doctor glancing at me. "Excuse me, Miss." She say. I shake my head coming out of my daze. "Sorry." I say grabbing the clipboard and looking down at the sheet. Personal information. Insurance. "Are you okay?" She asks. "I'm kind new at this. Just fill it out and wait my turn?" I ask her. "Yes, fill it out. You can sit over there and hand it back when you're finished." She say pointing to the waiting area.
It's kind of empty. So, finding a seat isn't going to be a hassle. "Thanks." I say walking to the waiting area and sitting in a spot where nobody is sitting. I turn around to see the doctor glance at me again along with other people. I look at the clipboard then up at the doctor who finishes his conversation and walk through doors leading to the rest of the hospital.
I scratch both palms of my hands and begin writing my information down on the paper. Maybe I should've told Jacob, he could've came and waited with me or probably be mad because of a special doctor also working in the hospital but I'm sure I'm no where near him. "It's others before you." I hear a young man say to me who's sitting across from me.
"I didn't say that it wasn't or anything. I just looked at him. Shut up." I say ending the conversation and going back to the paperwork. "You don't tell me to the shut up." He say with an attitude. A lady looking at him causes me to close my mouth and not delve into any arguing with him. Another childish boy. I sigh going back to filling out the paper work.
I wonder what Jacob is doing. It's the middle of the day. So, he's probably doing nothing. He came by this morning and that was it. I couldn't kick him out even though I wanted too but the feelings that's between us are too strong for me to say no or be negative to him. Once he found out if he does that I went to the hospital, he'll be kind of mad. It is his daughter and he needs to know everything about her.
I sigh digging into my pants pocket for my cell phone to call Jacob. I take out while the young man stares in my face. I shake my head calling Jacob's cellphone. He answers on the second ring and I hear talking and noises in the background. "Lacie." He say. "Yeah, What are you doing?" I ask him. "I'm just hanging with the guys at Sam's house. Why?" He asks.
"I'm at the hospital." "For what?" "I just want to get checked out meaning an ultrasound and ask some questions." I say looking out of the big window at the parking lot. "I'm on my way." "You don't have to come. I just wanted to let you know that I was at the hospital. He hung up on me." I say looking at the phone while the man still stares in my face.
I sigh putting the phone into my pants pocket and looking back at the man. "Is there something I can help you with?" I ask him. "Nothing now." He say sounding disappointed. "I'm in a relationship with my boyfriend." I say looking back at the paper and flipping it on it's other side to see if it's anything on the back. It's not. I flip it back over. Oh, he looks disappointed. I shake my head looking at the paper. Be normal and just wait in line. It's way more people with problems and they was here first. I'll just wait.
I'm woken from my nap by someone's brushing my hair and I lift my head up to see it's same male doctor from before staring in my face. I look around to see everybody in the waiting room staring at me. "Can I help you, Mr?" I muffle out. "You needed to see a doctor." He say. "I did. I can wait. I just wanted an ultrasound." I say looking around to see it's night time.
He grabs my clipboard and look at it. "It was just a simple check up. They can go before me." I say while he reads it. "Lacie." He say smiling. Oh, Lordy. He reminds me of Mr. Howard. "Yes, that's my name." I say sitting up and seeing it's two different nurse's at the front desk now. Oh, those two nurses. "I just wanted to wake you up because it's going on ten o'clock and you're still in the waiting area." He say.
"Oh, that was nice of you. I'm up now." I say going into my pant's pocket for my cellphone. "I'll come back another day. It was only for a check up." I say taking the clipboard from him. "You can return it to the front desk." He say. "And, I will." I say looking down at the clipboard and walk off to the front desk feeling his eyes on me. "That's okay. Maybe another time." I say handing it to one of the nurses and walking towards the exit.
I look at the doctor one more time before walking out of the exit doors. I sigh looking at the night sky. So, I guess Jacob changed his mind. I move out of the way when the exit doors open and wave good bye to the doctor. He waves too. I swear he looks like Mr. Howard. I shake my head calling Jacob's cellphone while looking at the doctor walking towards his car.
Jacob answers on the second ring. "Hello." He casually say. "Oh, wow. What happened to coming up to the hospital?" I ask looking at the doctor getting in his car. "I don't have time for your games, Lacie." He say. Oh, okay. "Okay, Jacob. I'm just calling to tell you that I'm home." I say seeing the car driving off and he glances at me one last time before driving out of the parking lot and down the street.
"Is that all, Lacie?" He asks me. "Yeah, it is. Talk to you in the morning." I say and hang up before he can he open his mouth to say anything else. I sigh turning back around to look into the hospital. I guess it's like a ghost town at night. The nurses glances at me before going back to working. I step back to get a clear view at how big the hospital is. My palms aren't itching no more. So, whatever it was it must've passed.
I cross my arms looking from window to window. The hospital does look nice at night with the lights from the rooms and the curtains. I look back down at the waiting room. I must be on the wrong side of the hospital for it to take me to be in the Emergency Room. Let me think for a minute. It's ten o' clock at night and the buses stop running at eight.
I need a ride home. I call Jacob's cellphone again. He answers on the second ring. "I need a ride home." I say and wait for him to speak. I turn around to look at blinking car lights. "I'm not allowed to leave the tribe, Lacie." He say. "So, what am I supposed to do? It's ten at night and the buses doesn't run." I say still looking around the parking lot. "I don't know, Lacie. I have to go." He say hanging up.
I sigh putting my phone back into my pant's pocket. I guess I can explore the hospital for a couple of hours or find the reason why my hands was itching so badly. Maybe I'll run into . He can tell me about my body and that was the main reason while I wanted to go to the hospital in the first place. I turn back around towards the doors and walk back into the hospital.
I walk back up to the front desk. "How can I help you?" One of the nurse's asks me. "I'm here to visit someone but I think I'm on the wrong side of the hospital. This is the ER but I want the visiting section. What can I do?" I ask. "What section of the hospital are you looking for?" "The one where I can go visit a friend of mine. His name is Dr. Cullen and it was the only spot that my bus ride dropped me off at." I say out of breathe and clenching on my chest feeling weird.
"Are you okay?" She asks worried. "Yeah, I just ran out of breath and I should've gotten checked out at the time but I was so tired. I'm pregnant for one." I say sitting down in the chair in front of her desk. She waves her hand over and a male nurse walks out of a room. "What's the problem?" He asks walking over to me and kneeling in front of me.
"I'm almost two months pregnant. I'm out of breath, always tired, and my chest hurt. Is it a heart attack?" I ask putting my head on his shoulders. "My chest hurt." I say holding on my chest and feeling all eyes on me. "Let's get you into a room and have you checked out. Can you grab her a wheelchair?" I hear him asks someone before helping me stand up and putting me in a wheelchair.
I rest my head on my hand. "We'll get you checked out." He say pushing me through a double doors. "I feel so weird and heavy." I say feeling a headache forming between my eyes. I try to focus my eye sight as I'm rolled down the hallway but it's kind of hard. "Can you hold on a little bit longer?" He asks me. "Yes, I can try." I say putting my head in my hands.
I think I passed out in the hallway because I woke up in an empty hospital room with an IV in my arm. I never should've came to the hospital. I hope they didn't take my heart rate because they'll be in for a surprise when they can't find one. I move my jaw around. It's not as heavy as at it was before but it's still stiff. I look around the room for a clock but can't seem to find one.
I look at the IV while taking out of my cellphone. I 'must've been dehydrated. "What time is it?" I ask looking at the clock on my phone and see that I don't have no missed calls nor text messages not even from Jacob. "It's going on eleven." A man's voice say behind the curtain before pushing a cart into the room. I eye the blood pressure checker.
"So, how's the baby?" I ask him while he's going through the cart. "The baby's fine. It seems you was only dehydrated." He say making nod my head. "I'll remember that am I free to go?" I ask. "Not yet. I want to run some tests on you and the baby." "For what reason? I'm only dehydrated." I say pressing on the IV hinting for him to take it out or I will.
"Do you have somewhere you have to be?" He asks looking at a clipboard. "Yeah, at home. I have school tomorrow." I say looking at him grab the blood pressure checker. "I think it can wait till you know for sure that your baby's health is alright." He say while I look at my phone. "I know my baby's alright. Are you stalling or something?" I ask curious looking at him putting the cuff on my left arm.
"No, I am not. Can't treat you while you're knocked out. Why we wait till the patient is wide awoke." He say tightening it on my arm and pressing a button on the cart making the cuff tight around my arm. I grin at him. He grin back. "So, what school you go too?" He asks. "I go to Forks High." I say nodding my head looking down at the cuff.
"I guess it's not working." He say pressing the button again. "Oh, my lucky day." I joke. He chuckle pressing the button again deflating the cuff. He takes it off. "I'll guess I'll go old school." He say grabbing the stethoscope from the cart. "Can I?" He asks me. I nod my head pulling down my shirt and he put the chest piece on my chest.
He looks at me confused moving it around my chest. "Can I get you to breath in?" He asks. I breathe in. "Out." I breathe out. He looks even more confused taking the chest peice off my shirt. "Let me go. Get a doctor to come check you out." He say putting the stethoscope back on the cart. "No." I say grabbing onto his scrubs stopping him. "No?" He asks confused.
"Yeah, no. I just want you to check on my baby and don't worry about my health." I say. "Your baby depends on your health, Lacie. I'll be back with a doctor." He say. I nod my head. He pushes the cart out and closes the curtain. I take the IV out of my arm and get off the hospital bed. I put my cellphone in my pant's pocket and walk out of the hospital room where the male nurse who checked me out and a couple of doctors turn their attention towards me.
One of the male doctors grabs the clipboard from off the nurse's station and I pay them no mind and head towards the exit. "Excuse me." The doctor say but I pick up speed heading towards the exit. He lightly grabs my arm stopping me then letting go. I breathe out turning around to him. "Yes." I say to him. "You may have a serious medical problem. Do you mind staying for more tests?" He asks me.
"I do mind and I will have to pass. My doctor already knows about my condition. I don't need more tests." I say. He leads me to another hospital room while the male nurse looks at me. I sigh putting my hands in my pants pocket waiting on him to speak. "They was a problem taking your blood pressure and listening to your heart beat." He say.
"I didn't know it was a problem. He didn't tell me. He just left out and is it something wrong with my baby?" I ask him. "Why we want to run tests. Do you mind if I check your heart rate?" He asks. "I do mind. I have to hurry up and get home." I say walking past him but he blocks the way. "Think of your baby." He say looking in my eyes.
"I already have a doctor dealing with whatever the problem your nurse found. He did not do it right." I say trying to move again but he blocks me again. I knew it was going to be a problem coming here. "Please, can you sit on the bed so that I can check you over?" He asks me. "How about tomorrow?" I ask "You and your baby can be dead." He seriously say.
I breathe out looking at him. He doesn't say anything just pointing to the hospital bed. "Either you move or be moved." I say serious ready to push him out of the way. He breathes out just standing still. "Just want to check your heart rate and order more tests." He say. "Let me go tell my parents who is sitting in the waiting room. Do you mind walking with me?" I ask him.
"I'll walk with you after I check you out. Think of your baby." "I wanted an ultrasound first then check on me. He told me no. Now either you move or I beat you down bloody." I say taking my hands out my pocket. My cellphone rings and I grab it out of my pocket while looking at him in the face. He just stands there. "I just want to know if my baby is okay." I say walking past him but he grabs my arms stopping me.
"We don't know if this may be a serious condition and how it can affect your baby." He say pleading with me. "It can be a heart murmur or something. I came because I was not feeling good and was thinking that I was miscarrying my baby. I need you to move because it's a high risk pregnancy." I say to him. "That can be a reason why you're high risk." He say.
"Can you let me go?" I ask him. He let me go. I take a breath and decide to do something that I never thought I'll do. I put my cellphone in my pant's pocket frustrated. "I just want to check you out." He say leading me over to the hospital bed and pulling out his stethoscope. I let him. The more I refuse, the more he'll keep asking and no telling what he might do. He put the ear pieces in his ears and the chest piece on my chest. He looks right in my eyes. I look at him.
"Everything sounds normal?" I ask him. He nods his head taking it the ear pieces out his ear. We both look at each other and silence fill the room. "Are you related to Mr. Howard?" I ask because his face looks just like him. "I don't know a Mr. Howard but I want to run some tests on you and the baby." He say. "I'll have to pass, Doctor Unknown. My doctor knows what's going on with me and with the baby." I say to him.
He nods taking out the clipboard and writing on it. "Your name?" "Madison Greene." I say. "It says your name is Lacie." "I lied because I was only coming in and out. Can you hurry it up? I wanna go home and you cannot keep me here by force or I will call the police. My parents is in the parking lot waiting on me." I say getting off the bed. He nods moving out of the way.
"It's recommended that you stay and be given further treatment for you and your baby." He say. "Nothing is wrong with me that I already don't know. You are not the first doctor to treat me." I say walking out of the hospital room where the male nurse glances at me than at the Dr. Unknown. He looks at the male nurse.
"Are you leaving?" The male nurse asks me. "Yes, I am. I have get home but thank you." I say walking towards the double doors while taking out my cellphone. I guess neither one follow me out.
I walk out of the hospital calling Jacob's phone. He answers one the second ring. "Where are you?" I ask looking back into the hospital. "I'm at home. Why? What's wrong?" He asks worried. I turn back around and begin my walk home before the doctor or nurse can catch me.
"I'm walking from the hospital. I was always caught." I say speeding up my walking. "What you mean almost caught?" He asks as I hear shuffling in the back. "I'm walking home and I'll tell you when you pick me up?" I asks wondering if he'll tell me no.
Its silent on his end. "I can't leave the tribe." He seriously say. Only for me but can for Bella. I hang the phone up on him. I turn back around to look at the entrance and see no one is following me.
I only know one person with a car and he told me to call him whenever. I look at my phone and call his number. He doesn't answer on the first call. I call him again. He answers. "Hello." He answers. I pause for a minute.
"Ms. Thorne, is everything alright?" "I need a ride from the hospital." I say looking at a street light change from Red to Green. Maybe that's a sign about Jacob and everything.
I look at Mr. Howard who's driving me back home. He glances at me before turning his attention back on the road. "Wanna tell me why Jacob didn't pick you up?" He asks me. I turn the radio down. He grins at me. "Oh, you're at that don't touch my radio type of guy?" I ask. "Something like that. You wanna tell me why?" He asks. "Because we had a fight and I was called a liar by him and mostly all of his friends. It's been seeds about me being a liar till things just popped. Now doesn't want anything to do with me." I say.
He nods his head. "And, the baby?" "I hope he stills there for his daughter. I got mad and admitted that it might not his kid." "Is it?" "It is his daughter or son. We're just apart now and I fill that his friends are keeping us apart and I'm scared it'll be too much damage before he can make things right." "Meaning?" He asks. "That it won't be a relationship no more for us. It's takes two to tango and he could've asked me about so much but I don't beg nobody even though I miss him. I feel he set me up." I say.
"About vandalizing your house?" He asks looking at me. "I don't know if it's truth to that or not but the way he let his friends talk to me and not understanding my point view." "And, what is that?" He asks. "The same way he has secrets, I have them too. We both can't tell our secrets but I feel he has more than I do. He can up and leave and never once look at me the same way again." I say rubbing on my palms.
"Maybe it's not meant to be." He say. I nod my head giving it some thought. "I thought about it for so long and I'm starting to think that maybe that's true. I'm going back in my head and wondering about the sighs and his attitude. I thought maybe he didn't like me hanging around you or something. It's a big age difference between us. You wanna know how old he is?" I ask him.
"He must be young." "He's real young. He's a teenager and he has so much to worry about now than a lying pregnant girl who's doing the total opposite of what the doctor told you. I know he's wondering if it's still a baby or not." I say. "Is it?" He asks looking at me. I shrug my shoulders. "Is that was the reason?" He asks me. "No, it was something totally different. I just wanted to asked some questions but I'm sure he knows it's a baby still in me. I'm gambling too much." I say.
"Is it high risk?" "From what I was told? I'm starting to think it's not. I get all of the regular symptoms of a pregnancy but none of the bad kind and I passed that stage. So, it's doubt. I told him he might not be the dad." "You said that already." He say looking at me one last time before silence fill the car. I look out the window watching the buildings.
He turns the radio back up. I shake my head at the classical music. "Can I tell you a secret, Mr. Howard?" I ask looking at him turning into my neighbor. He turns the radio all the way down. Wow! He must been waiting for it. "I think my whole life since stepping foot has been a lie." "What lie?" "Everything but I'll make it through." I say looking forward and noticing his wedding ring.
"How's your wife?" I ask changing the subject. "She's fine, Ms. Thorne." He say glancing at me. "That's good. Thanks for coming to pick me up." I say seeing my house come up in view and Jacob's car sitting in the driveway. "You're welcome. Will I see you in school this week?" He asks pulling in front of my house. I take off my seat belt. "I think you will. I'll try to make it. Thanks again, Mr. Howard." I say opening up the car door and exiting out.
I look at the front door while closing the car door. I guess Jacob's not going to welcome me home. I sigh walking up to the front door and taking my keys out my back pockets and unlocking the door. I open it up to see Jacob sitting on the couch watching TV. He doesn't even look at me. I turn around to Mr. Howard. He waves at me. I wave back walking into the house and closing the door behind me and locking it.
"Jacob." I say to him. He turns around facing me and instantly I can tell that his feelings are hurt badly. "I am very sorry for hurting your feelings." I say looking at him getting up from the couch. "And, I want you to know that I'll be ready to tell you the truth." I say looking at him walking out of the living room and going up stairs. I sigh checking the door's lock one more time before going up stairs myself.
I look in my bedroom to see that he's not there and he must be in the guest room. I sigh walking in and closing the door behind me. I'll have to clean up my mess tomorrow and hope I don't run into that doctor nor nurse. I take off my coat and shoes and get on the bed ready to go to sleep. I sigh closing my eyes and picturing Jacob wide awake staring at the wall. I messed up big time today.
