Complicated Possession
Chapter 11 – The King Impersonator
Night in Asgard was strange but beautiful. It glittered a gold that Minnie didn't even have a name for, its colour was entirely unique and owned its own precious qualities. The sky glimmered weakly with this gold laced through the deep velvet sky and the stars shone like small diamonds among it. She had never had a nicer view from her window than the sleeping city of Asgard and the angelic sky that watched over her and the regular inhabitants.
She had tried to sleep but the thought kept drumming around in her head. The same mantra again and again like a broken record. She couldn't decide whether to tell Thor of her suspicions or not. If she was right then the whole of Asgard could be in danger, with a threat on the throne and Odin gone they could all be in serious danger. But if she was wrong and Odin was only acting a little bit off then she would look like a fool and no one in Asgard would ever trust her again.
This conundrum had kept her from sleep so she'd moved to sit by the French doors that led out to the balcony, keeping them shut to protect her from the cold wind outside. She was wearing an oversized, baggy jumper over her underwear. She hadn't bothered to pack real pyjamas, she didn't need them really. Her feet were bare and slightly cold against the stone tile floor. Her hair was down, her mother's ribbon safely on her bedside table.
She was trying to make a decision, she wanted to talk to her dad, ask him what he would do but she didn't know the time difference between Asgard and Miami and she didn't fancy waking him up if he was sleeping at last. New York had changed him badly and she didn't want to make it worse by worrying him. She had to be strong now, she had to fix it all on her own. She stood up, her feet chilly against the stone floor. She moved over to her dresser and pulled out a pair of jeans and a 'Captain America' t-shirt that had begun to be sold on Earth since New York. She'd bought it and been sure to wear it whenever she was sure to see the dear Captain. It winded him up and made her laugh, she'd decided to bring it as she was sure it would make Thor laugh too. He hadn't got the joke and now it was simply one of her more comfortable t-shirts. She changed swiftly and kept her hair down, tying the ribbon into one of the belt loops in her jeans.
Once she was changed she crossed to the door and opened it a fraction. She peeked out, there was no one to be seen and so she slipped out the door and began moving immediately. She wanted to settle this tonight, privately. If there was an imposter on the throne of Asgard then she would deal with it, if not it would all be smoothed over tonight. She expected he would be in his chamber but she'd heard rumours that since Frigga's death he'd taken to spending his nights working in the throne room and not sleeping much. She easily found her way to the throne room, paused, took a deep breath and raised her fist to knock three times.
. . .
The spray hit Loki's face as it had so many times before, it annoyed him but it was a small price to pay in order to converse with his business contact in the caves. He had been meeting with the strange creature for weeks and weeks now. He was planning an overthrowing of his own, he had contacted Loki and made him an offer the prince couldn't refuse. The water lapped against the cliffs and wet his face as he walked along the cliffs on the way back from one of these meetings towards the palace. He had never seen this creature, he always wore a hooded, black cloak and Loki had only ever heard his voice which was rough and gravelly. The creature intimidated him even though he didn't like to show it, sometimes he was sure it must show through. It had immense power over Loki and this fear was what it used to control him. Loki wasn't sure if the creature was helping him, or he was helping the creature.
He went up to the throne room through the secret passage he'd found and ensured that his façade was in place as he crossed from the back of the throne room and walked up the steps to the throne with the face of an old man yet the grace of the young. As he sat on the throne and resumed his portrayal of the man he had once called father, there was half timid, half confident knock on the large doors opposite him. It was like the person the knock belonged to couldn't make up their mind if they really wanted to see him or not. Like they didn't know that by the fact that they had knocked at all had decided it for them.
"Enter." He called, the voice that didn't belong to him rang across the hall. How he wished that he could just rule Asgard as Loki, being Odin was so tiring.
When Minnie Stark opened the heavy door he was surprised. The majestic doors made her look small despite the fact that Loki knew she was taller than most girls her age. He was reminded once again that she was a child, a child who had once shown him mercy and deserved mercy in return. But why she was here to see Odin he didn't know.
The slightly determined look on her face worried Loki, this kid was smart. But was she smart enough to bring him down?
