Chapter Five
Riley had been avoiding Caleb for 2 weeks, and it was driving him crazy. Ever since the situation with her and Reid she'd distanced herself from him. She felt that she had to in order to protect herself. She had been fighting her feelings ever since Reid had called her out, but she couldn't deny it anymore. At least not to herself.
So much had happened since their return to Ipswich. Reid had Ascended, and his Ascension had gone just like Pogue's. The five Sons, Reid, Tyler and Pogue's fathers, and Riley were all in attendance. Reid was excited, yet slightly disappointed to have Ascended because he wouldn't be able to Use as recklessly anymore. Also, Riley had gotten her license and was now driving freely.
Reid, though, he'd put some distance between himself, Riley and Caleb. He was still angry about what had happened in the Bahamas and Pogue, Tyler and Chase had noticed the tension between the 2 Sons and the young witch. But Riley was tired of Reid's avoidance and so she decided to corner him. It was a Saturday night and all the Sons had gathered at the Parry Mansion to have a movie marathon. Reid went into the kitchen to grab some drinks and Riley stealthily followed him.
"Don't you think that you've been avoiding me long enough?" She crossed her arms and blocked him from the refrigerator.
He rolled his eyes. "I have no idea what you're talking about." He shrugged innocently.
"Oh please, Reid." She rolled her eyes as well. "Let's cut the bullshit. You've been avoiding me and I hate it." She sighed and looked down. "Please tell me how to fix it." She pleaded softly.
Reid sighed heavily and ran a hand through his hair. "Look, Riles," He began and she looked up at him, "I get that you and I aren't going to get back together, but you lied to me." He narrowed his eyes. "That's what hurt most. You lied about your feelings for Caleb, but then I realized you weren't trying to convince me. You were trying to convince yourself." He shook his head. "Stop lying to yourself, Riles because if you don't, it's gonna consume you." He stroked her cheek.
She gave him a small smile. "Thanks, Reid, and you're right," she shook her head and let out a humorless chuckle. "You were right about everything, but how am I supposed to tell him? He has a girlfriend and he sure as hell doesn't feel the same way."
"Wow…" Reid laughed. "You two are so fucking blind." He rolled his eyes. "Look Riles, when you see the opportunity, take it. Don't chicken out because the Riley I know isn't a coward." He gave her a wink and his typical charming smile.
"Thanks, Reid." She grinned. "You're the best."
"I know." He shrugged nonchalantly.
"Wasn't telling me the truth better than avoiding me?" She teased.
But before Reid could answer, a familiar voice came from the doorway. "That's funny, because it sure as hell seems like you've been avoiding me." There was Caleb, leaning against the doorframe with his arms crossed and an angry look on his face.
Reid let go of Riley with a quiet chuckle and grabbed drinks from the fridge. "I'll leave you two alone to talk." He said, walking to the door. Once he was completely behind Caleb, he mouthed: "Opportunity!" to Riley and walked out.
"So are you gonna talk to me or try to run?" Caleb arched an eyebrow and Riley simply looked away. "Why have you been avoiding me? Is it because of what happened with Reid?" He asked vehemently. "Did you realize that you still might feel something for him?" His heart sank a little with that question.
"No!"Riley answered quickly with a shake of the head. "No, I do not have any feelings left for Reid."
"Then what is it?" He took a step towards her. "Why have you been avoiding me, Jenny?" He no longer looked angry, but hurt instead.
"It's complicated, Caleb." She said softly, tearing her eyes away from his.
"Then explain it to me." He cupped her cheek and she looked at him again. "Help me understand." He said softly, standing so close that their noses were touching.
"Please…" She pleaded softly. "Don't make me answer that, Cale." Her blue eyes bore into his, begging. "Let's just go back to the way things were before…"
Caleb knew what she was talking about. She didn't want to talk about what he'd heard Reid say, and honestly neither did he. He was lost in a sea of feelings. He had no idea how he felt about Riley anymore. He was torn between his girlfriend and his best friend.
"Ok." He agreed and a smile broke out on her face.
"Thanks, Caleb." She threw her arms around him and hugged him tightly.
"You're welcome." He chuckled. "Now let's go back before they watch the next movie without us."
She nodded. They returned to the rec room, sat together on the couch, where Riley curled up against Caleb's chest and he put his arm around her, and missed the surprised and curious looks of the other Sons.
Sarah had been worried when Caleb left for vacation with Riley and the other Sons, but when they returned she couldn't be happier. Caleb and Riley had barely spoken a word to each other since their return. Sarah wasn't sure why, but she loved it. In the past 2 weeks, she and Caleb had spent a lot of time together.
She drove to Nicky's with a smile, excited to see her boyfriend, but unfortunately when she walked in she didn't find what she was expecting. Caleb and Riley were playing pool against Tyler and Reid with wide smiles on their faces as Chase, Pogue and Kate stood by and watched.
"I swear, Reid, if you try to cheat, I'm going to kick your arse." Riley threatened jokingly as Reid took his shot.
"And I'll help her." Caleb added, bumping his shoulder against Riley's and giving her a smile.
She returned with a smile of her own then turned to Tyler. "My turn, Baby Boy, and you can bet that this one will sink." She winked at him and bent over to take her shot.
"That's right, Baby Girl." Pogue cheered. "Kick their asses, my money's on you." He smirked.
"No way." Chase shook his head. "Reid and Tyler got this. She won't make that shot."
Sarah's eyes filled with fury. She should've known that the rift between the 2 wouldn't have lasted. She took a deep breath and plastered a smile on her face before walking over to her boyfriend. "Hey, Caleb." She threw her arms around his shoulders.
"Hey, Sarah." He kissed her cheek and rested an arm around her and then turned his attention to the table where Riley sunk the last ball. "Hell yeah!" He cheered holding the pool stick up high and releasing Sarah as he was joined by Pogue and Kate in cheering. "That's my girl!" He pulled Riley into a hug and kissed her temple as Kate moved over to greet Sarah.
Riley laughed. "Food's on you guys tonight." She pointed to Tyler and Reid, not making a move to step out of Caleb's arms.
"Damn…" Tyler shook his head. "We are never letting you 2 team-up again." He chuckled.
"Damn straight." Reid agreed, running a hand through his hair. "When did you get so good anyways, Riles?" He teased.
"Alex and Heather had a pool table in their basement." She shrugged, smirking victoriously.
"My cousin is the shit." Pogue pulled her from Caleb's arms and threw an arm around her shoulders. "Pay up, mofo." He held a hand out to Chase.
"Damn, Riley." Chase sighed. "You weren't supposed to make that shot." He laughed and handed Pogue 20 bucks.
"Teaches you not to bet against me, Collins." She stuck her tongue out at him.
"You should put that away before I find some use for it." Chase winked, earning a glare from Caleb.
"As if you could handle all this." Riley smirked and rolled her eyes, getting laughs from Pogue, Tyler and Reid, and a tenser one from Caleb, who kept his eyes on the black-haired girl.
"That's Riles for ya." Reid chuckled as he pulled out some cash. "Come on, Baby Boy. Let's go get some food for these losers before a certain someone devours another certain someone on the pool table." He joked throwing a glance at Riley and Caleb. Tyler, Chase and Pogue laughed, while Riley and Caleb simply looked confused as Sarah fumed and Kate tried to comfort her.
"You're right." Tyler agreed. "We better hurry." He and Reid walked away.
"What was that all about?" Riley's eyebrows furrowed with confusion.
"No clue." Caleb shrugged just as confused as Sarah put an arm around his waist possessively.
"You guys…" Pogue rolled his eyes and chuckled. They really were hopeless.
"What?" The 2 asked in unison.
'How can they not see?' Pogue shook his head. "Never mind."
Chase snickered. "Dumbasses."
Reid and Tyler had returned with the food, and everyone made their way over to the table. Everyone ate and talked peacefully. Sarah buried her anger because she knew that she would be the one going home with Caleb that night. By the time they were ready to leave it was nearly 1 am.
"Well I should go." Riley stood up. "I'm really not even supposed to be driving this hour." She chuckled, standing up and everyone did as well.
"We should all get going." Tyler added and the others nodded.
"Caleb, I'm gonna run to the bathroom before we go." Sarah said and Caleb nodded.
"I'll meet you outside by the car." Caleb responded as he, the other Sons, Kate and Riley walked outside.
"Are you coming home tonight, Pogo?" Riley asked leaning against her car.
"Nope." He shook his head with a smirk. "I'm going to Kate's dorm."
Riley chuckled, but her heart sank slightly. If he was spending the night with Kate at her dorm it meant that Sarah would be with Caleb. "I'll see you tomorrow then." She smiled at her cousin.
"See ya, Baby Girl." He kissed her forehead, and then he and Kate got on his bike and left.
"See you tomorrow, Baby Girl." Tyler pulled her into a hug.
"See ya, Ty." She returned the hug and he got into his hummer.
Reid pulled her into a hug. "Don't miss out on the opportunity. Take it when it comes." He whispered in her ear.
She chuckled. "Good night, Reid." 'He makes it sound so easy.' She thought as he released her.
"Good night, Riles." He winked and got into the passenger seat of the hummer.
"Sweet dreams, gorgeous."Chase winked, earning a glare from Caleb, and then he slipped into the back seat of the hummer.
Riley chuckled and rolled her eyes as Caleb walked over. "You 2 seem chummy." He grumbled as the hummer pulled out and left.
Riley shrugged. "Well he's not half bad once you get past the extreme narcissistic asshole side of him." She grinned cheekily.
Caleb laughed. "I guess. Just be careful, ok?" He tucked a curl behind her ear, getting so close that their bodies were touching.
"I always am…" She whispered as their eyes locked on each other.
Caleb said nothing as he subconsciously leaned down, lost in her crystal blue eyes. Their eyes closed halfway as their noses touched, their lips millimeters apart as their hearts raced in their chests.
'He wants to kiss me? Is this because of what he heard between me and Reid? Did he hear everything? Does he know that I…' Riley's thoughts trailed off. She was thoroughly confused. 'But I couldn't take it if he regretted it… which he would immediately. He has Sarah…' Her heart dropped into her stomach as his lips were about to touch hers. "Caleb…"Her voice was soft. "Please don't do this to me…"She pleaded and turned her head away only slightly.
Caleb's eyes widened. 'What the hell am I doing?' He sighed and took a step back slightly. "I'm sorry, Jenny." Shame laced his tone. "I didn't…" He shook his head. "I don't know what I'm doing anymore…" He admitted, cupping her cheek and making her look at him. Confusion surrounded the 2 of them.
She gulped and looked at the floor. "Good night, Caleb." She said quietly, running from the conversation that they had yet to have. Luckily, Sarah decided to show up at that moment, and the opportunity, as Reid had been calling these moments, passed.
"Good night, Jenny." He kissed her forehead as Sarah latched onto his arm.
"Are you ready to go?" The blonde asked hopefully, ignoring the brunette, who decided to get in her car and leave.
"Yeah…" He answered as he watched Riley drive off. He turned to look back down at Sarah. "Let's go." He guided her to his car.
Their drive to his house was quiet as he tried to push the thoughts of his almost kiss with Riley and all the feeling that were bubbling inside him. 'I shouldn't be thinking about Jenny like this… Especially since I'm taking Sarah back to my place.' He thought as guilt weighed down on him.
Sarah, on the other hand, was looking forward to getting Caleb all to herself and reminding him of everything that he felt for her. 'I refuse to let that little witch take Caleb away from me.' She was determined not to lose Caleb.
Caleb pulled up to his house, and they quickly and quietly made their way up to his room. Without any words their lips came together in a frantic and desperate kiss. In no time, Sarah was straddling Caleb on his bed and they were only left in their underwear.
Meanwhile, Riley climbed into her bed. Thankfully the house was completely empty because her aunt and uncle had traveled to Chicago for the week on business, and Pogue was with Kate.
Her stomach churned at the reminder that Sarah and Caleb was spending the night together. Tears filled her eyes and she tried to hold them back, but they spilled over anyways. 'Why do I have to feel this way about him?' She thought as the tears streamed down her cheeks and onto her pillow. She buried her face in her pillow and cried herself to sleep to run away from her thoughts and her feelings.
Riley was standing in the middle of Spencer's cafeteria, but it was too dark to see anything. "Guys?" She asked looking around confused. "Tyler? Caleb?" She drew in a deep breath. "Reid? Pogue? Chase?" Her heart began beating rapidly in her chest. "Guys?" She repeated more frantically than the first time.
A light came from one side and she turned to look at it. Caleb, Reid, Tyler, Pogue and Chase were chained to the wall by their hands and feet. She put her hand up to her mouth with a gasp. She held a hand up as her eyes flashed to black.
"Now why would you go and try to do that?" She heard a voice from behind her. She turned around in a flash and saw a man in his forties dressed in robes from the Middle Ages. He had a turban on his head with an ornate cross pendant on it. "You too, my dear?" He walked around her as if inspecting her. "I thought that your kind had been wiped from the face of the earth, and yet here you are." He stood in front of her with a cruel smile. "Your time will come, but let's deal with your friends first, shall we?" He moved to turn and Riley tried to throw him aside with the Power, but it bounced off of him instead.
She tried it again and the same thing happened. "How?" Her eyes widened.
"Magic, my dear." He answered and a lit match appeared in his hand. He threw it down on the ground below the Sons and they caught on fire.
"No!" She sobbed and reached for them as the man laughed cruelly.
Riley sat up, drenched in sweat and in the midst of tears. She looked at the clock, it was 3 am. She wiped her forehead and eyes, and moved to sit on her bay window seat. She pressed her head against the cool glass, took a deep breath and stared out the window. She frowned slightly as she saw an odd shadow move through the backyard. 'I must be paranoid…' She shook her head and looked again. She saw the shadow of a man move quickly again.
Her eyes widened and she grabbed her phone and dialed the number of every Son except the one she really wanted to call. Unfortunately for her, none of them answered. She finally decided to call him, but he didn't answer either.
She thought about the dream and remembered watching them burn. She grabbed an oversized cardigan, her car keys and ran out of the house.
Guilt overwhelmed Caleb as he got off of Sarah. He lay next to her, and she moved to lay her head on his chest and quickly fell asleep. He couldn't keep doing this. Every moment he had with Sarah in the past hour, he kept imagining crystal blue eyes in place of Sarah's blue-green ones, and seeing black hair instead of seeing blonde. He even bit his lip so hard that it almost bled, in order to not call out the wrong name, her name.
It was wrong. He knew it was, but he didn't know how to fix it. He liked Sarah, but he wasn't feeling as deeply for her as he once had. 'What am I going to do? I can't keep doing this. I can't feel this way for her while I'm with Sarah. I shouldn't even be picturing her while I'm with Sarah. It's not right.'
Caleb lay there awake in his bed as he tried to sort through his feelings. Time passed by as he got lost in his thoughts and his eyes got heavy. He reached for his pants, which were by his bed on the floor, and fished for his cellphone to check the time.
He saw that it was 3:10 in the morning saw that his phone read:
One Missed Call: Jenny
His eyes widened and he moved to call her, but before he could call her back he heard frantic knocking on the front door. He stealthily slid out of bed and put on a pair of pajama pants before rushing downstairs and opening the front door. When he opened the door he saw Riley standing there in a gray tank top and black drawstring short shorts covered with a large navy blue cardigan, slip-on Vans, and her hair in a messy bun. She also looked like she'd been crying.
"What happened?" He pulled her inside, concerned. "What are you doing going out like this? It's freezing outside."
Her bottom lip trembled as she fought to hold in her tears. "You're ok…" Her voice cracked and she hugged him tightly.
"Of course I am, Jenny." He held her face and made her look up at him and saw the tears streaming down her cheeks nonstop. "What happened?" He asked again.
"I had this dream... You and the other Sons were chained… Then he set you all on fire." She explained in between cries. "Then I saw this man walking in the backyard. I tried calling the others… I knew you were busy." She looked away, slowing the tears. "But they didn't answer… Not even Chase, and then I tried you too." She looked up at him. "When you didn't…" The tears began again and he held her in his arms. "I just thought- I-" Her voice broke again. "I assumed the worst." She whispered and continued to cry.
Caleb said nothing, but simply held her as she cried and took in what she'd said. She'd had a nightmare or a vision. He wasn't sure which at the moment, especially since he'd had a frightening dream of his own, and then there was the man that she saw in the backyard. They would talk about it when she was calmer. His mind traveled to the other things she'd said. She had called the other Sons, even Chase, before calling him and that unnerved him. He had always been the first person she turned to in these moments, but she didn't this time even if she had driven to his house.
The rational part of him knew that it was because she knew that he was with Sarah, and because what happened in the Bahamas and then in the parking lot at Nicky's. They were walking on eggshells around each other and he hated it.
She began to calm down in his arms and he kissed the top of her head. "I don't care how busy you think I am, please never come to me last again." He said softly against her hair. "Especially when you always come to me first, Jenny."
She looked up at him with reddened and puffy eyes. "But you and her-" She began to protest only for him to cut her off.
"I don't care, Jenny." He narrowed his eyes. "You're my best friend. Nothing beats that." He gave her a small smile which she returned in like. "Come on let's go talk about this more clearly now that you're calmer." They walked to the living room and sat on the couch together. "Now tell me about the dream and the man you saw."
She nodded and explained the dream with as many details as she could remember. "That's all I remember about the dream, Caleb." She sighed heavily and looked down to her lap. "It was awful. You were all burning and the screams…" She trailed off and sniffled.
"Hey," he made her look up at him, "it's gonna be ok. We'll figure this out, Jenny. I promise. None of us are going to get hurt." He reassured. "Now tell me about the man you saw."
"I didn't see much." She sighed heavily. "He was tall, muscular and looked bald. I think that maybe he had a goatee."
Caleb frowned. Who did they know that looked like that? He couldn't think of anyone that possibly fit the description. "I don't know much about the guy you saw, Jenny, but from what you told me, the guy in your dream was a witch hunter. I don't know much about them, but I do know that we're going to have to be careful. Tomorrow we'll call the guys and meet up at the colony house. We'll tell them about your dream, ok?" He explained and she nodded.
"Caleb?" She asked with a tiny smile.
"Yeah?"
"It's technically already tomorrow." She teased trying to lighten the mood.
He chuckled. "Ok, smartass. So we'll call them later." He smirked.
She laughed. "Ok." She stood up and he followed.

"What are you doing?" He furrowed his eyebrows.
"I should get going." She shrugged and stuffed her hands into the pockets of her cardigan.
"Stay." He asked in a whisper. She diverted her eyes from his, not answering. He pulled one of her hands from her pockets. "Please stay." He took a step closer to her. His eyes begging in a way he couldn't with words.
"I-" She didn't know how to answer. "What about-"
He knew what she was going to say and cut her off before she could finish. "It's fine. She's asleep." If she said Sarah's name, it would make their confusing situation all too real. "Stay." His chest was now pressing against hers.
She gulped as she contemplated her answer. 'What do I do?' She questioned herself. "I'll stay…" She surrendered and a smile broke out on his face.
"Take off that sweater and those shoes." He ordered, still smiling. "I'll go get us a blanket," and with that he walked out of the room.
She sighed and did as he said, hoping that she wouldn't regret her decision in the morning. He walked back in with a large quilt and one pillow. "I only got one pillow because you usually end up lying on top of me anyways." He joked and she let out a laugh. He set the pillow on the sofa and sat down, taking her in wearing just her little pajamas and a smile. 'She's beautiful…' He smiled a little.
"What?" She asked, having noticed him staring at her, and she sat next to him.
"You're insane for leaving the house dressed like that." He shook his head. "It's freezing outside. You could've gotten sick."
"Well my health wasn't the first thing on my mind." She yawned.
He shook his head again and yawned as well. "I'll scold you tomorrow." He said only to correct himself. "I mean later." He smiled as they lay down.
She rested her chin on his bare chest and they stared into each other's eyes. "Good night, Caleb." She pressed a soft kiss to his chest, and then rested her head on it before closing her eyes and falling asleep.
"Good night, Jenny." He whispered back just as softly and fell asleep as well.
A few hours later, Sarah woke up feeling happy and refreshed. She stretched and reached over for Caleb only to feel cold sheets. She sat up, confused, and looked around. 'Where could he be?' She got up, slipped on his shirt and smoothed down her hair. She wanted to call out for him, but was afraid of waking his mom.

As she made her way downstairs, she heard music coming from the kitchen. She walked past the living room and saw a pillow and a quilt on the sofa and a foreign cardigan on one of the armchairs. She followed the music and walked to the kitchen and heard a female giggle. 'Who could that be?' She asked herself. Before she could say Caleb's name, she found Riley standing over the stove with her hair in a high ponytail and wearing skimpy pajamas while Caleb stood behind her, shirtless and only wearing pajama pants.
"Come on, Jenny." He poked her side making her giggle again.
"Caleb," She attempted to reprimand, but her laughter ruined it. "I'm trying to make breakfast."
"Dance with me a little." He moved next to her and nudged her as he moved his hips against hers.
"No." She shook her head with a smile. "I'm hungry and I know you are too."
"When did you learn to cook anyways?" He crossed his arms.
"Heather and Alex decided that we should all take home ec together for both semesters so I learned a few things." She said and flipped the pancake onto a plate that had a few others.
Sarah could already smell the bacon and eggs so she figured that the 2 of them had been up for a little while. 'What the hell is she doing here anyways? When did she even get here? Did they sleep together?' She wanted to speak up and announce her presence, but she didn't know what to say.
"Are you done now?" He smirked and tucked a curl behind her ear.
"This is why I wanted to finish breakfast before you woke up." Riley rolled her eyes playfully.
"Well, as soon as I learned that I was all alone on the couch, I came looking for you." He explained giving the witch a sweet smile, which Sarah watched her return. "But that doesn't answer my question, are you done?"
Riley threw her head back with a laugh. "Yeah," she smiled. "I'm done." Caleb pulled her close, wrapping his arms around her waist as hers went around his neck.
'He slept with her all night on the couch?' He heart sank to her stomach. 'How could he do this to me? He was supposed to be the all around good guy!' She watched Caleb rest his forehead against Riley's as Riley swayed her hips against his and bit her bottom lip. Caleb ran his hands up and down her sides nonstop, never taking his eyes away from the girl he'd told her that was just his best friend.
'No!' Sarah screamed in her mind. 'I won't lose him to her.' She took a deep breath. "So you spent all night with her instead of me after we had sex?" Sarah finally spoke up with crossed arms, getting their attention.
Riley and Caleb immediately jumped apart upon hearing the blonde's voice. Caleb looked at his girlfriend and saw the accusing look in her eyes. "Sarah…" He began, but trailed off, not exactly knowing what to say.
"Well?" Sarah arched an eyebrow.
Caleb took a deep breath and stood in front of Riley. "We only slept, that's it. We didn't do anything else." He explained, knowing what Sarah was probably assuming. "I swear, Sarah. We just fell asleep on the couch. I swear on my father's grave."
Sarah relaxed a bit, seeing the sincerity in his eyes. "Then why is she here? Why weren't you in bed with me this morning?" Angry tears formed in her eyes.
He sighed heavily. "She had a vision during her dream last night. It was really bad and foreshadowed something terrible about me and the other guys." He answered, not wanting to tell her everything. The last time she got too involved with their magical situations, she almost got hurt. He walked over to her so they were about a foot apart. "She tried calling the other guys, knowing that I was busy. When no one answered, she assumed the worst because of the vision and came over. I let her in and she told me about the dream."
Sarah nodded her understanding, but couldn't help but voice her thoughts out loud. "So why is she still here?" She glared accusingly over his shoulder at the blue-eyes witch, who glared back.
Caleb frowned. "It was 3 am, Sarah. She was in tears because she thought that something happened to me and the guys." He took a step away from her. "It was dangerous for her to drive here in tears. I wasn't going to send her home in tears where she could get in an accident because of all the snow on the roads, so we sat on the couch and I helped her calm down. Next thing I knew, I woke up alone and heard her in the kitchen so we were hanging out." He couldn't believe that Sarah had expected him to kick his best friend out into the cold while she was in tears.
"Ok." She accepted his answer, knowing that it wouldn't do much good to argue about his decision to let Riley stay. "So what was the vision about?" She asked, arching an eyebrow.
Caleb shook his head. "No, I'm not involving you in this stuff this time." He crossed his arms and Sarah could see the conviction of his decision on his face.
"But she's involved right?" She pointed to Riley, who shook her head.
"She is part of the Covenant." He rebutted. "She's one of us."
Even though he hadn't said it, Sarah understood his meaning. She wasn't a witch or a warlock. That was one part of his life that she could never surpass Riley in because she would never fully understand it. She wasn't one of them.
"I think I should go." Riley sighed and made her way past the arguing couple.
"Jenny, wait." Caleb grabbed her wrist as she walked by. "Stay." He repeated the same request that he made the night before. Riley took a deep breath and shook her head, unable to find her voice to deny him. "We're meeting the guys at the colony house in about an hour." He reminded, hoping to convince her. "Stay."
She built up all her courage and finally responded. "No, I should really go. I need to change so I'll just meet you at the house." She walked away before he could say anything else. A few seconds later, he heard the front door open and close.
Caleb sighed heavily and turned back to Sarah. "Let's eat." He pointed to the table as he made his way over. "I gotta change and take you back to the dorm so I can meet with the guys."
Sarah followed him and they sat across from each other. "And Riley," She added rather bitterly and he simply ignored it.
They ate and got dressed in silence. It hurt Sarah when he didn't even glance at her while she got dressed. She desperately hoped that it was because he was thinking about the vision that Riley had, and not about Riley herself. On the drive back to the dorms, Caleb didn't say anything until he pulled up to the door. "I'll see you tomorrow." He gave her a smile.
"I won't see you again today?" She asked, clearly disappointed.
"I don't know." He admitted. "I have to take care of this situation and I honestly don't know how bad it really is. I just don't want to let it get to the point of Jenny's vision." He explained and Sarah frowned.
She hated his nickname for Riley. 'Why can't he call her Riley just like everyone else?' She sighed and nodded. "Ok, just call me if I can." She leaned over her and kissed him.
Caleb kissed back, but only briefly. "Bye, Sarah." He said tensely and she slipped out of the car.
"Bye, Caleb." She said with a sigh and closed the door.
Caleb sighed heavily as he drove to the colony house after school. "What the hell am I doing?" He asked himself, gripping the steering wheel. "I can't keep doing this…"
'To yourself or Sarah and Riley,' His conscience added.
He sighed heavily. He had to work through his feelings and fast. He couldn't keep going back and forth like this. He pushed away those thoughts to face the task at hand as he pulled up to the colony house. Once the situation was over, he was going to face his feelings about Riley and Sarah.
He got out of his car and quickly made his way to the basement. Reid, Tyler, Pogue and Chase were already standing there in front of their respective seats, and Caleb's seat around the circle was the only vacant one. "Where's Jenny?" He looked around as he made his way over to his seat.
Before anyone could answer, Riley flashed into the room. "Sorry, I'm late." She walked over and stood next to Pogue, since she was under the Parry name in the Covenant. "I had to look something up."
"And you decided to flash in instead of driving?" Reid asked her with a smirk and she nodded. "That's my girl!" He winked, earning laughs from all the Sons except Caleb.
"You should be careful Using." Caleb warned, giving her a look.
'Caleb… Ever the worrier…' She rolled her eyes. "Don't worry, Cale. The affects are different for me remember?" She arched an eyebrow with a smirk, but she had yet to explain how it affected her in detail.
"So why'd you call this meeting anyways?" Tyler asked, breaking the tension between Riley and Caleb.
"There's something coming." Caleb rested his elbows on his knees. "I had a dream a while back and I thought I was just silly. Then last night Jenny had a vision in her dream. There was a witch hunter and the five of us were chained to a wall in the cafeteria at school." He sighed heavily, unsure how to tell them the rest.
"That's it?" Reid rolled his eyes with disinterest.
"Then he burned you guys while all I could do was watch." Riley finished in a soft voice. "My Power didn't work. The energy blasts bounced right off him." She looked down at the ground as the 4 other Sons looked at each other with worry in their eyes.
"The hunter that Jenny saw in her dream," Caleb's eyes went black and held a hand out and a book flew off one of the shelves and opened in the middle of them. "He was the first witch hunter ever." The book showed a drawn picture of the man from Riley's dreams. "There's not much on him except that he was the first witch hunter who began hunting in the Middle Ages. He defeated a coven of witches who were destroying the kingdom, but no one really knows how." The book closed and dropped in the middle of the circle as his eyes flashed back to normal.
"I do." Riley stepped forward, her eyes flashing to black. Another book flew out from the shelves and levitated in the middle of the circle. "His name was Baldric Fletcher. He was an arrow-maker in the Middle Ages who lost his wife to the plague that was destroying the kingdom, but later on he found out she had actually died because witches were cursing the kingdom. The people in the town were dying of sickness and hunger so the priest gave him the Black Book of Witches." She explained and Reid, Pogue, Tyler and Caleb's eyes widened.
"What's the Black Book of Witches?" Chase looked confused.
"The Black Book of Witches was a book that helped regular humans to discover witches, and undo certain spells." Tyler answered.
"No one really knows where it came from or how the author knew so much about witches." Pogue continued, anticipating Chase's next question.
"Luckily it was destroyed." Reid added with a smirk.
"But that doesn't mean that his teachings didn't continue." Caleb reminded with a serious look on his face. "All of the witch hunters of the past were inspired by him and there was once a line of hunters called the Baldrics. They were taught Baldric's way of hunting witches so they are more lethal than regular witch hunters. They know how to hunt, find and fight against us." Caleb explained looking around at his brothers and Riley.
"So you think that this is a Baldric hunter?" Chase arched an eyebrow. This Covenant thing went a lot deeper than he thought.
"Based on Jenny's dream? Yes." Caleb nodded. "But there's something else too." He looked each Son in the eye. "Jenny saw a man in the Parry's backyard last night. She didn't get a good look at him." He explained and described what she saw.
"Is this why you called me last night, Riles?" Tyler looked over at her.
"She called me too." Pogue looked over at her as well.
"Yeah, me too." Reid looked over at her too.
Chase's eyes widened, turning his attention to the young witch as well. She had trusted him to call him as well, and even grouped him with the other Sons. "She even called me." The 3 other Sons looked at him, slightly surprised, but understood because slowly Chase had started to truly be one of them.
"Except none of you answered." She sighed heavily. "After the dream I just assumed the worst." She looked down.
"So how did Caleb find out?" Chase asked curiously. He knew that Caleb and Sarah would've been together so it was unlikely that Caleb would've answered either.
"She came over at 3am in her pajamas, Vans and a big sweater while it was freezing cold, and in the middle of tears." Caleb answered, glancing over at her slightly.
"Then what?" Reid gave Riley a smirk, making her roll her eyes.
"We fell asleep on the couch." Riley mumbled with a slight blush.
"Well I bet that was awkward in the morning." Chase teased with a laugh, making Reid, Tyler and Pogue laugh as well. "Sarah walks in, finding a scantily clad Riley asleep with a naked Caleb on the couch after getting fucked by him the night before." He smirked at his leader.
"He wasn't naked!" Riley protested, blushed bright red. "He had pants on! And I was not scantily clad." She glared at him with crossed arms.
The 4 Sons laughed as Caleb glared as well. "Come on, Riley. We've all seen your pajamas and they're pretty revealing and sexy."
Riley tried to glare holes into Chase's head as Caleb stood up. "She didn't catch us on the couch." He snapped.
"Then where'd she catch ya?" Reid smirked as well while Pogue and Tyler shook their heads. Were they that blind?
Riley looked away and Caleb sighed. "She caught Jenny making breakfast while we were listening to some music and playing around." He explained and then shook his head. "Wait, this is not what we're supposed to be talking about. The task at hand here is locating the Baldric, which I think is the man that Jenny saw outside her window. All we have to do is find out who he is."
"How the hell are we supposed to do that?" Reid looked around and everyone else shrugged.
"I might have an idea." Tyler said after a few minutes of silence. "I saw something in one of the books, but I'm not sure which one. I'll start looking and then I'll tell you guys." He explained, earning a look of admiration from Riley.
"That's great, Ty." She smiled.
"Great." Caleb sighed, feeling slightly relieved. "You find out whatever it is you're looking for as quickly as possible. We need to find out who this Baldric is." The other Sons nodded in agreement.
"So we're done?" Reid asked looking around.
"Yeah, just be careful Using." Caleb gave him a look. "Whoever it is could already be watching us, or worse hunting us. So no Using unless absolutely necessary." He looked each one of them in the eye, even Chase whose powers were bound.
"He's right." Pogue agreed. "If this guy really was outside my house yesterday, he must already have his eye on us." The others all looked at each other and nodded.
"So we're in agreement, no Using until this guy is gone." Caleb reiterated, standing up as everyone else followed his lead. "Agreed?"
"Agreed," Five other voices echoed.
"Well if we're done, I'm gonna go." Reid began walking towards the stairs.
"Me too." Tyler sighed. "I have a calculus packet to finish and then I'll come back to research." He and Reid made their way upstairs.
"Well, they're my ride." Chase chuckled. "I'm supposed to help Reid on the psychology project. We're partners." He followed the other Sons out.
"Fuck," Pogue ran a hand through his hair as he made his way to the steps. "I completely forgot about the calculus packet. I need to finish that too."
Riley gulped lightly. The last thing she wanted was to be alone with Caleb. "I should get going too…" She shrugged, unable to come up with a real excuse.
"Jenny, wait." Caleb grabbed her wrist, before she took the first step. "About last night and this morning-" He began and she simply shook her head, making him stop.
"Just don't, Caleb. Please don't." She sighed, taking her wrist from his hand and then running up the stairs.
Tyler had finished the calculus packet and spent hours combing through books at the colony until he came across a chapter filled with detailed information. He read all of it carefully and in detail. His eyes widened as he finished and closed the book. 'I've got to tell the guys.' He rushed out the door.
Riley paced back and forth in her room. She had to be able to remember who the man in the backyard was. She skimmed through a book in order to locate a specific spell. Every witch and warlock family, although being able to perform all kinds of spells and magic, had its area of specialty. The Goodwin-Popes favored spells with spiders and Telekinesis. The Simms Sons were masters of Mnemokinesis, the ability to delve into a person's mind to access or reshape memories. The Danvers mastered Ergokinesis branching into Astrakinesis, which was he user can create, manipulate, shape, transform astral energy. The Garwins perfected the use of Telekinesis and Pyrokinesis; Reid wasn't fond of fire for no reason.
But unlike warlocks, witches' magic was more connected to nature, mastering forms of Atmokenesis. The Riley witches were closely connected with matters of precognition and perfected astral projection to its highest form; they could project their consciousness and senses beyond and away from the physical body and even take over someone's mind.
Riley took a deep breath as she located the spell she was looking for. She reread the instructions in one of the Simms diaries. Entering your own memories wasn't nearly as dangerous as entering someone else's because if done incorrectly the person could lose every memory they ever had or worse; they could become mentally impaired. There were risks in doing it to yourself, but it was rare for it to go wrong.
She closed her eyes, locating the memory. It was exactly like the first time; she couldn't see much, just an outline. He looked bald and muscular, and seemed to have a goatee. She froze the image and projected herself to stand next to him as her eyes flashed to black. She took a deep breath as she manipulated the memory into becoming brighter. She opened her eyes and looked at the trespasser. Her eyes widened. The man was of average build and height, completely inconspicuous, but she had seen him before.
She slowly backtracked to her conscious self. She jumped up and teleported to the school. She stood in front of the front doors, her eyes still black as she sent out a subtle wave of Power to sense the Sons. She felt them in the basement and sprinted there as fast as she could. Upon reaching the door, she took a deep breath and then opened the door.
"How nice of you to join us," A sinister voice spoke from the darkness and then suddenly candles lit all around the room.
Riley gasped.
Sorry for the long wait! I got caught up with a new job and I was so blocked on this chapter, but my juices are flowing little by little again. Soon I'll have more time to dedicate to my writing and it shouldn't take this long to release the next chapter. But this story does have a more complex plot than my TVD one and it's chapters tend to be longer so please be patient with me.
Guys the link to the story banner as well as a picture of Riley is on my profile. Go check it out!
Please don't forget to review and leave some love!
