Chapter 2

A Bridge Almost too Far

Flying over the smoking city, I remembered how I first came here. A wolf who didn't know why he was here, or what he would become. I then soon brought my mind back to the present as I approached the Red Iron Bridge. I then saw Beta, along Wolf Squad holding their ground against an approaching group of Egg Pawns at the entrance to the bridge. I then shot a large beam of yellow energy at the robots, turning them to ash. I then landed on the ground in front of the squad.

"You sure have a way of coming in at the right time darling." Beta said.

"It's a gift." I smirked, causing her to giggle. "So, what's the story."

"We've been trying to take control of this bridge ever since the start of the battle."

"How far did you get." I asked.

"Not an inch sir." A gruff male voice said. I turned and saw a black wolf that wore a tan helmet and belt and a large black wispon that looked like a bazooka on his back. "Those beaters keep pinning us down like nothing."

"Beaters?" I asked confused.

"You might have missed a couple things General." Gizmo said. I then turned to the black wolf.

"What's your name and rank soldier?" I asked.

"Private Pierson, sir!" He replied.

"What's that wispon on your back supposed to be?"

"It's the new Bomb wispon sir."

"Very good Private." I said. I then looked around to see who we had. There were the twins, Gadget, with Lightning, and Gizmo with Hover. Mechanic with void, Claw with Drill, Kai with Cube, Pierson with bomb, and Beta with Laser. Then suddenly a plan hit me. "How long before the next wave hits?"

"Very soon General." Mechanic said. "I'm picking up a large group of beaters approaching the bridge as we speak.

"Gizmo, can your wispon take the weight of two people?"

"It could take three, if necessary." He replied.

"Alright here's the plan. Gadget, and Gizmo, I want you two under the bridge at the other side. Kai, Claw, you are with me. Pierson, when I give the signal, I want you to fire a charge at the wave. Once that charge lands, the three of use will charge the enemy. I will use my power to protect us temporarily, but when he hit the wave, all hell will break lose.

"Where do we fit in this?" Gizmo asked.

"If things go according to plan, they will try to retreat. Once that time comes, you to will appear and shut their escape hatch."

"Got it." The twins said.

"The rest of you will stay here. If things go wrong, this will be our fallback position.

"You got it General." Beta said.

"We only have one shot at this. Let's make it count."

"SIR, YES SIR!" They all shouted. I then turned and saw a row of orange robots marching towards us.

"Twins, get in position!" I shouted. The two wolfs then leaped off the bridge holding hands.

"HOVER!" I heard the wispon say. I then heard a small wurr come from Pierson's wispon.

"Primed and ready sir." He said.

"Hold your fire." I said holding up my right hand. "Let them come a little closer."

"Enemy at 300 meters and closing." Scotty said.

"Orders sir?" Pierson asked nervously.

"Hold your fire." I said calmly.

"250 meters sir." Scotty said. I paused for a second. "225 meters."

"FIRE!" I shouted.

"BOMB!" the wispon shouted, shooting a black bomb towards the enemy.

"WOLF SQUADRON!" I shouted as I formed a yellow transparent wall in front of me. "Let's go beat some eggs!" The bomb then exploded, forming a cloud of dust. Kai, Claw and I gave a loud war cry as we charged towards the robots. Orange laser beams spewed from the cloud of dust, most of which were blocked by my shield. Before we knew it, we were six feet from the enemy.

"ALRIGHT BOYS, GIVE THEM HELL!" The shield then dissolved as I leapt into the air. I then gave a large burst of energy just as I landed, sending robots all around me flying. I then drew my sword and started deflecting lasers and slicing robots one by one. Off the corner off my eye, I could see Claw drilling through a hole row of robots, while Kai was smashing bots with his wispon like a hammer. It was utter chaos, but about five minutes into it. I heard one of the robots' shout, "RETREAT!" They all then started running towards the end of the bridge.

"We got them on the run now!" Claw shouted. I then pushed my button on my scouter.

"Alright twins, do your thing." I shouted.

"You got it." Gizmo said.

"Leaving so soon?" I heard Gadget say.

"Shall we join the party?" Kai asked.

"No reason why not too." The three of us then ran towards the end of the bridge, by the time we got there, there were only a hand full of robots left. The three of use were about to engage but then Silver came along and used his psychokinesis and threw them into the river. I then walked towards him.

"Show-off" I said. He was about to speak, but a laser bolt then hit him in his left side, causing him to crouch. I then turned and saw a small group of robots coming towards the bridge. I was about to draw my sword but Gizmo used his Hover wispon and repelled them away. I then saw Silver lying on the ground, groaning in pain. "Silver!" I shouted, and slid next to him. His gloves covered with blood.

"Damn bastards." He groaned softly.

"It's okay. Your going to be alright." I said. "GIZMO, GET THE HELL OVER HERE! NOW!" He then ran towards me, and put both of his hands on the wound. Silver then screamed in pain.

"Your going to be fine." He said. "General, my first aid kit is over on the other side of the bridge."

"I'll go get it." I then flew towards the other side like Sonic. Beta, Pierson and Scotty looked at me like I was a ghost. I looked around for the first aid kit.

"General. What's going on?" Scotty asked. I then saw a large red bag with a white cross on it.

"No time to explain." I picked up the bag and flew back to the other side as quick as a flash.

"Good." Gizmo said. "Take my place, and put pressure on the wound." I then did just that, Silver then flinched, and groaned with pain. Gizmo then reach in and pulled out a little sack with a needle on it. He then pulled out the cover of the needle with his teeth and stuck it into Silver's leg. His breathing then slowed down.

"What did you just inject?" I asked.

"Morphine, it will reduce the pain." He replied. He then pulled out a white pad, and tape. I then moved out of his way and moved on the other side.

"Uggghh." Silver groaned. "Alpha… am.. I gonna … make it?"

"Of course, you are." I said. "You're gonna make it. And were gonna go home, and relax, and even play some cards."

"Alpha." He said starting to tear up. "I'm afraid."

"It's okay, just focus on me." I said tilting his face towards me. "Not the pain, not the wound, not even Gizmo. Just look at me. You'll get through this; I know you can."

"I can't" He cried.

"Yes, you can GODDAMN IT!" I said. "You wanna know why?"

"W-w-why?" He struggled to say.

"Because you Silver the Hedgehog. You been through a dystopian future, and suffered the wrath of Iblis. If you can make through that, you can make it through a flesh wound with ease."

"R-r-really."

"Yes, and I know Blaze would agree."

"S-she would."

"Of course, she would."

"That should do it for right now. I'll radio for an ambulance." Gizmo said.

"Now what do say, we get you back on your feet and make her proud." I said then stood up and held out my hand. He then grabbed it; I hoisted him back on his feet slowly. I then put his left arm round my neck, and put my right arm around his body.

"You see. I told you, you could do it."

"Thank you, my friend." He said.

"Anytime Silver."

"General, you've got trouble heading your way." I heard Beta say.

"Counter-attack?"

"No it's the High Council, there heading your way." She replied. Silver and I then looked at each other for a second.

"Well shit." We both said together.
