Hi. It's time for some level 5 action!
Sorry if the chapter is a little too vague. I tried to make it as clear as possible. So, feel free to ask questions about what exactly happened. I will rewrite your questions then answer them by editing this chapter.
Answer to Guest's review: Oof, you really got me there. Thanks for the complements and criticism, it helps me understand the story from the reader's point of view. The prologue and the whole concept of the "reincarnation" part was actually created in a whim. I needed something to explain to the readers about what kind of person Emilia is. She is a genius who cares a lot for her friends. I REALLY wanted to avoid the readers thinking that Emilia became friends with the Railgun crew to use them as tools instead of actual friends.
Another thing is that I haven't really grasped the complete science of the Toaru series. I'm only a 10th grader. I only used my math and science in the "real world" to write out this story's logic. For example, I don't really get how Meltdowner's power works. I'm told that she moves electrons or somewhat to fire plasma beams. I only assume her power is to fire lasers (not to mention her lasers split when in contact silicon cards? Shouldn't the cards melt or something?) But in the other hand, Accelerator's Vector control is fairly easy to grasp. I'm pretty good at math, and I learned what Vectors really are. So, if there is anything else about "Personal realities", "AIM fields", or other things that I'm forgetting to consider while writing this story, please let me know.
Whew, now let's get started.
Emilia chuckled a little upon the realization that her crime wasn't in vain. That's him, in the flesh. Emilia got into a fighting stance. She wasn't taking the fight with Anti-Skill seriously, and she knew she shouldn't be the same way with Sogiita. She took deep breaths very slowly to calm herself. There's no telling what he'll do next because of his mysterious ability. However, judging by his personality, Emilia could already tell he was going to attack straight on.
Just as predicted, he sends out a projectile straight towards Emilia (A laser beam? Emilia couldn't tell what it was exactly). She responded with another ice barrier to shield herself. However, the blast was too powerful and shattered the ice, forcing Emilia to sidestep and allow the beam to hit the bank behind her straight on.
Even though the beam was slightly weakened due to the futile iceberg, the hit was still fatal. The bank already began to collapse and the people inside screamed for help.
Some hero he is. Emilia thought with a teeny bit of dismay.
Emilia charged forward, accelerating herself towards her target, dagger in hand. She twirled the dagger, then clutched it tightly to slash Sogiita's neck. Sogiita made a larger grin and headbutted the dagger. After Emilia flew past him, now in front of the Anti-Skill members. She realized her dagger shattered to pieces and to her shock, Sogiita's forehead didn't even have a single scratch.
She whirled around only to notice that Anti-Skill was focusing on getting the citizens out of the collapsing bank. It's just me and him huh? Emilia summoned an iceberg right below Sogiita's feet, launching him in the air. Emilia was about to attack, but the 7th ranked seemed to have maintained his composure and dived straight into Emilia's face.
Emilia dived to the left, parrying a sniper's bullet in the process. She looked up in the buildings to notice that several snipers are working with Sogiita to capture and interrogate her. She caught another sniper bullet using her index and middle fingers, this time from the other side. She pulled out her own pistol and shot Sogiita once, and as a response, he caught the bullet using his bare teeth.
Clicking her teeth, she put the gun away and froze the entire road. She grew about an inch taller from gaining blades into her boots. She skated in an arc towards Sogiita's right flank. He tried to punch the skating figure, but Emilia already expected this. She ducked, barely avoiding the fatal punch, and grabbed Sogiita's wrist. She spun around, still holding Sogiita's arm, throwing him straight towards the bank, accelerating him at top speed. He crashed into the bank; which wasn't much of a bank anymore.
Emilia swept the dust of herself. She knew Sogiita wouldn't go down so easily, so she prepared herself for the next phase of the fight.
Suddenly, Emillia was showered with bullets. A coordinated attack. She counted 20 or so sniper bullets in less than a fraction of a second. She couldn't calculate the trajectories of each bullet quick enough, so she had to improvise.
She tilted her head backwards to avoid the first 3 bullets which were shot slightly earlier than the others and aimed at her head. Then were the rest of the bullets. She stepped forward, made an iceberg to protect her rear, and did a backflip to avoid the rest of the bullets aimed at her flank. She looked up to see Sogiita in her face again. She sidestepped to the right to see him crush the iceberg behind her in only one blow. She threw a fireball and took several steps back, but Sogiita took the fireball in the face and ran straight at her again.
Emilia prepared to parry his attack, but she heard more gunshots. God dammit, how the hell am I going to dodge a level 5, and about 30 bullets at the same time? Wait, that's it! If they're shooting me, there's no way there is a bullet coming at 12 o'clock, or else it would hit Sogiita. Making this logical deduction in godlike speed, Emilia ran forward towards Sogiita, avoiding the shower of bullets. She prepared to parry his punch, but she took a bullet to the ankle.
She fell forward, stumbling in pain. She could only block at this point. She put her right arm in front of her to protect her head, and took Sogiita's hit. She was knocked back a good twenty meters, landing on a roof of an abandoned car with her back. Emilia sat up in daze, then flipped backwards behind the car to avoid another laser beam.
Emilia was a sitting duck. She was hiding behind a car with a broken arm, and a bullet hole in her ankle. A bullet bounced off her cheek.
She looked around to find about 4 snipers that could still shoot her while she was in cover. She tried to stand up, but she quickly sat down to avoid the barrage of bullets coming her way. I can't go anywhere with this, I've got to get rid of the snipers.
She made several icebergs in hopes of making more cover for herself, only to be destroyed by another laser beam.
"I'm not putting up with that trick, gutsy masked guy!" Sogiita shouted out.
Emilia was officially cornered.
"Attention! We have you cornered! Put your hands in the air where we can see them!"
Yeah, no shit Sherlock.
Emilia looked around to find that everyone successfully evacuated the crumbled building, and she was surrounded by snipers. She sighed in defeat. Is this the end? She pulled out her pistol and shot 2 annoying snipers that had a good angle in her. She noticed that the car in front of her was in neutral mode. Then she had an idea.
She unloaded her own gun. 30 bullets.
She risked a peek to memorize the positions of the snipers. 29 snipers.
Emilia slapped herself in the face. Come on, you got this. Targets in 1, 9, 28, 39, 40, 43, 48, 56, 90, 117, 128, 143, 168, 170, 178, 194, 234, 234, 249, 251, 259, 274, 289, 295, 307, 323, 337, 349, and 357 degrees respectively. Slant height would be 1.2, and rotation at 31.8 degrees per second. Falling speed: 9.8m/s^2.
She leaped as high as she could with her acceleration ability. She was even higher than the buildings the snipers were sitting on. She was diving head first into the ground, pointed her pistol, and spun clockwise.
Using her quick calculations, and her pitch perfect timing, she shot a total of 29 bullets as fast as humanly possible. All the bullets hit the helmets of the officers, knocking them out.
Emilia finally landed back in her hiding spot and pushed the car in front of her slightly. She accelerated it at top speed straight at Sogiita.
Of course, this wasn't a problem for our 7th ranked, he merely punched it, making it fly the opposite direction. As soon as the car was out of his line of sight, Emilia flew straight into Sogiita's face.
Sogiita grinned. "Charging into me takes some serious guts! Super.. Amazing… PUNCH!" He said as he bent his knees to prevent serious recoil.
Emilia put out her left hand full of flames and countered with a bone-melting flamethrower.
The two attacks canceled each other out and Emilia managed to kick him, then get a pistol against his chest. He had a thick skull, so Emilia aimed for his chest. She shot the last bullet, then tossed the gun aside with her gloved hands.
Emilia stood up slowly, with Sogiita on the ground. He wasn't dead, but she had 'won' the fight. She took several deep breaths. The snipers were knocked out, Sogiita was shot, and the rest of the officers were in shock. Now all Emilia had to do was leave.
She launched herself out before Anti-Skill could do anything. She immediately lost them and was out of sight. She slowly flew to the hideout (which was hard, given her bleeding ankle).
Arriving in the hideout, X wasn't there, so she had to just leave the clothes in his desk.
She looked for something to treat herself with, but she couldn't find anything. There wasn't any first aid. She limped away in the dark alley. Her ankle was still freshly spewing blood, it was a surprise that she still didn't feel woozy from losing blood. I need to get to a hospital. She thought, clutching her broken arm.
"Hey who is that?" She heard a man say.
"Is she an esper? Another one said.
Emilia looked up slowly, keeping up with the pain.
"Turn it on just in case." A man ordered.
A horrible sound rang out and Emilia screamed. She was already in serious pain, she didn't need any more. She was in so much pain she couldn't even think rationally. She didn't know if she had to cover her ears or clutch her broken arm. She just fell to the ground, unable to do anything. She couldn't even use her ability. The calculations would be messy when Emilia was completely overwhelmed with pain. Emilia felt like she was going to pass out.
"She's an esper! Get her!"
She finally fainted, and heard distinct shouting as she shut her eyes.
"-Lia! Emilia!"
She slowly opened her eyes to see all four of her friends looking at her with concern. She became more aware of her surroundings, then noticed that she had a cast in her right arm and a bandaged right ankle.
"How long was I out?" Emilia asked slowly with instinct.
"A few hours." Kazari replied.
"Damn those Skill-Out members. This is the furthest they've gone with the espers." Mikoto growled.
"I must take my duty more seriously to avenge my friend and fellow Judgement member." Kuroko added.
Emilia immediately read the situation at hand. Everyone thinks that her encounter with Skill-Out was the cause of her extreme injuries. That's convenient. She thought.
Emilia sighed. "It's my fault. I got too ahead of myself. Their noise hurt my ears and I couldn't do anything. I might have deserved this." She shifted a little to adjust herself. It's been a few years since Emilia was in a hospital bed.
"What?! No one deserves a broken arm! Let alone a bullet to the ankle! To think they would shoot a middle school girl!" Mikoto yelled. Emilia looked at the others to see them all nod vigorously in agreement.
"Wait, has Skill-Out attacked espers more than once?" Emilia asked.
"Yes, they've been attacking several espers at sight. We are currently investigating the situation at hand." Kuroko said.
Emilia sat up. "Well, I guess I'll get to work. She proceeded to attempt to get out of the bed, only to be pushed down by Ruiko. "Saten?" Emilia asked with confusion.
Ruiko pouted, who was still grabbing onto Emilia's shoulders. "You're injured! You always do this, you do these incredible things and you just say it like it's nothing! Let yourself rest for once!"
"Ruiko, I don't think I have any more vacation days though."
"That's not the point!" The four friends shouted at once.
After a while, her friends left telling her that they were going to visit their senior's apartment. She didn't quite understand how that was supposed to help investigate the Skill-Out situation, but as long as she wasn't involved, she couldn't care less. It wasn't like Emilia could do anything about it anyway.
Suddenly her phone rang. It was X.
She picked the phone up. "What do you want?" She asked. There was a reply. "I just wanted to congratulate you on now becoming the 6th ranked esper."
"We're skipping the other guy?"
"Sogiita's ability is only last among level 5s because his ability is an enigma. Not because he is weak. I will get going now, I will spare you the missions when you are in the hospital." *click*
Emilia sighed and put her phone back on the counter on her left. Wait, If I had to fight an esper to get my rank up, how did Railgun get to 3rd? Surely she didn't experience the bloodbath? She shrugged internally. Whatever, it's none of my business.
She got another phone call then groaned. It was an unknown number.
"Hello?" She asked as she held the phone up against her left ear.
"Emilia? Are you okay?"
"Azusa?"
"Yeah! A very friendly nurse let me borrow your phone. I still have the number you wrote down for me!"
Emilia smiled. "Well anyways, I'm just fine."
