Hello, I guess we are beginning the Poltergeist arc!
This arc is actually my least favorite arc in the series, and the arc where I have the least amount of ideas to make it interesting. Sorry about that!
I think it'll get better in the sisters arc.
EDIT: Wait, Touma's being OOC? I thought he's just fine…
Saving others: check
Slightly stupid: check
"SUCH MISFORTUNE!": check
What exactly is Out Of character about him? I'd like to know.
Anyway, let's get started.
It has been a while since Emilia was finally discharged from the hospital. Her ankle fully healed and a cast on her right arm. She found the new cast to be a bit uncomfortable when it comes to walking, but she quickly adapted and got used to it.
She walked across the busy street, straight to her dorm. Everything was the same as always.
She opened the door to her dorm. "I'm back." She called, casually. To her surprise, no one was there. The air was cold, which meant that Ruiko left the room a while ago. I should tell Saten. She gave a faint sigh and called her roommate. As she waited, she sat on her own bed.
After waiting a few seconds, someone finally picked up. "Hey Saten, I finally got discharged from the hospital." Emilia spoke to the phone. She heard faint chatters indicating that Ruiko was in a very busy and crowded place.
"Oh, great! We should celebrate your return when I get back." Ruiko said.
"Oh, there's no need." Emilia said, waving her hand out of habit. After a little silence, Emilia spoke up again. "Are you… in a parade?" She asked, upon hearing the noises of people in a confused tone.
"Oh, yeah. I'm in the midsummer festival. Of course you heard of it right? Oh, and by the way, Apparently Misaka-san's dorm manager is having a love life! Can you believe that?"
"Erm…" Emilia trailed off. She never really met the dorm manager. Her face frowned a little from the realization that she missed quite a bit of fun with her friends. "Yeah. I'll be hanging out in our dorm. Cya!"
"Goodbye! I'll be back as soon as the festival is over."
After ending the call, Emilia stood up and took a shower. She proceeded to make herself at home. Everything was so quiet; not that she was complaining. From all the chaos of wearing a mask to the chatters from the nurses in the hospital.
For once, she wasn't sleepy. She got a lot of sleep from the hospital. So, she picked up a book she bought a long time ago and started to read it with just her left hand. Never thought I'd ever use this. The book had a nice leather, blue cover, making her fingers comfortable holding the book. After a while, she was immediately hooked into the book.
Emilia had no idea how much time passed. She was about halfway finished already, and she heard a knock on the door.
"Hey Emilia, it's me!" Ruiko's voice echoed through the door.
Emilia folded a corner on the page of the book she was reading using her left thumb to mark it. She stood up and opened the door to find Ruiko at the door, holding something and giving an lighthearted smile.
Emilia smiled slightly in return, allowing Ruiko to enter, but Ruiko suddenly stared at her roommate intently as she walked by.
"Emilia, are you wearing contact lenses?" Ruiko asked.
"No…?"
"Your eyes are blue." Ruiko pointed out.
Emilia gave her a confused look. "My eyes were always blue."
"Weren't they… gray?" Ruiko asked in a skeptical tone.
"Ha!" Emilia barked. "Do gray eyes even exist?"
"I guess they don't…" Ruiko said, then her eyes lit up again. "That's right, we have a present to give you! Misaka-san and Shirai-san couldn't come celebrate because of curfew, and Uiharu-san had other matters to attend to. So it's just me!" She handed Emilia a small cake (not a cupcake, maybe a foot in diameter) that had a blue icing message on it.
'Get well soon! Congratulations on your recovery!'
"Heh, thanks a lot. I'll put it in the fridge so we can eat it together sometime." She did just that, then started to pick up on her book again.
"Can we take a selfie?" Ruiko asked suddenly.
"Right now? I guess I don't mind." Emilia came closer to Ruiko and smiled as Ruiko put up her phone. "Why?"
"Just wanted to."
It was the next morning and Emilia went back to her own routine. She was in a good mood since her other job in the dark side was paused until her own arm healed; which would be a long time given that Sogiita literally shattered her arm. Skill-out members wouldn't be able to cause this much damage, but it was a lucky thing that her friends were misled by X's coverage. After school, she walked to the Judgement office. When she entered, she realized that no one was there yet. With her cast still in place, Emilia began finishing the things she missed using her left hand.
The door opened and Emilia turned around in surprise. It was Kuroko and Kazari. It looked like they were in the middle of a conversation, but they suddenly grew silent upon seeing Emilia.
"Oh, hey Emilia." Kuroko greeted. Kazari ran straight up to Emilia's desk and inspected her face.
"Um… is this some new kind of reunion tradition?" Emilia asked dryly in response to Kazari's strange actions.
"Her change must have been the amount of sleep she's been getting in the hospital. I'd never thought I'd see you when you aren't tired." Kuroko said casually. She placed her bag and got herself settled in the office.
"Yeah, that photo with Saten really threw us off. It was like you are a totally different person!"
"This is great! Now Emilia doesn't look as intimidating!" Kuroko cheered. She got into her teasing tone. "Do you need help with your homework, Emilia? I know you're right handed~"
Kuroko approached Emilia, now both Kuroko and Kazari were right behind the girl sitting on her desk. But Kuroko was shocked upon what she was seeing.
"You're ambidextrous?!" Kuroko cried in defeat, while Emilia gave a smug look.
"Well anyways, I have a new roommate coming over in my dorm, want to come with us?" Kazari said with a smile.
"Sure, I'll just finish up with this and I'll catch up to you."
Emilia ran towards Kazari's dorm to meet this new roommate of hers. She came across her usual 4 friends, along with another girl. Emilia guessed the new one was Kazari's new roommate. The girl has short, dark hair, where she has tied a few strands of them together on the left side of her head.
"Hello, My name is Emilia."
The girl turned around and gave a shy smile. "I'm Haruue Erii."
"So, that's all well and good, but what are we going to do about all these boxes?" Asked Ruiko. She and Emilia were a bit confused, looking at the mountain of boxes that was just sitting in the middle of the floor.
Kazari closed her eyes and started fidgeting. "Well, it seems that I was out picking up Haruue-san at the station, but the moving service already called to say that they already have everything arrived.
"Is this why you had us come with you?" Emilia asked tilting her head, looking for confirmation.
"O-of course not! I was planning on having a fun day together! It's just… we need to start with this first." Kazari blushed a little in embarrassment.
"I suppose it cannot be helped." Kuroko said with a sigh. She touched one of the boxes, then the box vanished. Presumably appearing inside the room.
"Woah, I didn't think of that!" Ruiko said cheerfully.
Eventually, everyone helped with organizing everything inside the room (even Emilia helped with one arm, though everyone insisted her to stay put).
"That's amazing. I've never seen a teleporter before." Erii said in awe.
Kuroko closed her eyes and let her ego rise. "That's not surprising. It's hard to find teleporters at my level in Academy City." In response, Erii gave an admiring look to Kuroko.
Mikoto clapped her hands. "All right, that's enough. How about we give a tour for our new little friend here?" Mikoto suggested.
"Oh, the judgement members are needed for a joint meeting between Judgment and Anti-Skill regarding the recent earthquakes. We can't right now, could you handle it?" Kuroko said with an awkward smile.
"Well, I suppose it cannot be helped. Let us know when it's done."
"You got it!"
After the meeting, Kuroko and Kazari were filling in Emilia with what happened while she was gone. That included how they resolved that Skill-out problem, and the strange earthquakes occurring recently.
"Earthquakes huh? And that woman says it's RSPK?"
"Yep, you're going to be a big help in investigating this."
Everyone met up in Playland GAU. The place is filled with color and complete with fun attractions such as arcade games. The girls began having their fun, and persuading Erii to join in as well. Finally, they all took a photo together in the photo booth.
After leaving the arcade, the Sakugawa middle school students went back to Kazari's room to prepare to watch the fireworks display.
"Emilia, do you not have a yakuta?" Ruiko asked while she was wearing one herself.
"Don't need one." Emilia said coldly. She was leaning on the window, waiting for Erii and Kazari to finish themselves.
Eventually, everyone met up together by the riverside, and the fireworks started.
Though Emilia hated to admit it, this was actually her first time watching fireworks. It felt… a little familiar in a way, and somehow felt a little repetitive. Despite all that, she was excited. The prettiness of each multicolored sparks in the dark sky overwhelmed her joy. She looked to her side to see her friends all sharing the same expression; staring intently towards the show, admiring it. It's just a bunch of explosions… what's so amazing about it? She thought, but she can't help keep watching intently at the fireworks.
Suddenly, Erii ran off. Emilia didn't really hear or see what triggered her to leave, but Ruiko and Kazari ran off to get her. Suddenly she felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned to look at who it was, and it was Kuroko. Her mouth almost drooling, with an evil smile, and her pigtails almost levitating…?
"Todoroki-san, perhaps you should leave too to find Erii. Me and Onee-Sama will be here enjoying the show."
Mikoto flinched, stepping away from her underclassman. Emilia couldn't really describe her face, but it was face mixed with disgust and fear. "I-I, think I'm going to leave." she said, not wanting to get involving with what's to come.
"Wait, Emilia? EMILIA COME BACK! Please, Todoroki-Sama!" Mikoto pleaded, while Emilia was comically left to check on Ruiko and Kazari.
It was after a few seconds Emilia felt something was wrong. The ground started to shake, and Emilia maintained her composure and balance, but she noticed Ruiko barely able to move due to the earthquake, and Kazari covering Erii. A pole came towering down on Kazari and Erii.
She reached out her hand, about to use her power.
