Chapter 1: A Chance Meeting
The beams of light shine through the leaves and as the summer breeze gently rolls through as a snowy white dragoness with icy blue horns which glistening in the sunlight like diamonds as she turns with a snowflake shape sapphire necklace. Her eyes were like two glimmering gemstones as her lips gave kind smile, holding her hands out to him as a warm feeling washes over his body as a smile came across his face, reaching out to take her hand only to find his hand to find an invisible wall between them. He pressed his hand against the wall that stands before him, watching her smile back at him, unaware. The light reflecting off the wall revealing his reflection as he looked upon himself seeing his purple scales and golden horns. His own dark blue eyes staring back at him as he pressed against the glass as gold slowly fades into silver as the young purple dragon step back as everything around him fades and they are floating in an empty space as the dragon in his reflection stood up taller than himself.
"Who are you?" he asked him, "Tell me! Who was that?" he further pressed. As the larger purple dragon stood over him as fear started to creep in on the smaller dragon as he held his hand over his head,
"Sleep," he said coldly as his hand faintly glows as his vision begins to blur, "Sleep and dream young Spyro," the purple and silver dragon said, causing Spyro to fall into darkness, his name echoes loudly in his head.
"Spyro! Hey Spyro buddy! Wake up!" a voice called out from the darkness, "Urgh…W-Who's there?" the Purple Dragon yawns, rubbing the sleep out of his deep blue eyes as he saw the golden dragonfly buzzing hovering in front of him, "Oh it's you just you Sparx," he said as his mind drifts back toward the dream he had toward the white dragoness and the purple and silver dragon, "Yo, bro you still with me," Sparx said pulling the Purple Dragon back to reality,
"Oh, sorry Sparx, what were you saying," he asked him.
"I said that last night we had an earthquake and it caused some of the buildings we were able to repair to fall apart," he repeated.
"An earthquake? That weird... I thought the world finally stabilized" Spyro said. It had been three months since Spyro and Cynder defeated Malefor and saved the world from destruction. They barely escape the planet's core as the world started to come back together. Once they avoid getting crush under the weight of the planet. They collapse from the exhaustion and a search party had eventually found them. Spyro was out for seven days straight while Cynder slept only three days. However, ever since they return to Warfang, Spyro has been getting strange dreams once again of a strange land with strange dragons that he never had seen before with powers he never had seen. He has been wondering why the same dragon has been showing in his dreams every night since Malefor's defeat. However, he has yet brought it to anyone's attention due to the damage that has been caused by the battle over the dragon city. Repairs to the city needed to come first before anything else as many people lost their homes during the battle against Malefor's forces.
"Don't know!" Sparx said, "Anyway, what I do know is that the remnants of the boogie man's forces are still around and they've been attacking the supply lines leading into the city," the golden dragonfly explained, "So you better get your butt into gear before Cynder comes to hunt you down again," he said to Spyro as the purple dragon started to walk toward the window.
"Alright, alright," Spyro said as he headed toward the door. Once he opens it, Sparx flew ahead of him, the breeze brush past him as he closes the door behind him. Stepping out, the young dragon spread his wings to take flight toward the wall around Warfang as he flew through the city as he passed other dragons who were working on repairing the damaged buildings as a smile grew across his mouth as some children stop and waves at him as Spyro gave a wave back as he flew by them. It was hard for him to believe that the war was finally over that Malefor is truly defeated.
Even with his recent dreams, he was happy. It was like a weight has been lifted off of him. He felt like he could do anything as he smiles as he flew higher into the air.
"Spyro where are you going?!" the dragonfly called him.
"Catch me if you can Sparx" the purple dragon called back, the feeling overwhelm him as he couldn't help himself as he grinned like an idiot as he flew into the clouds. Sparx chased after him, the two brothers race along the clouds laughing and acting like fools for what felt like the first time in a long time as Spyro laughed himself to tears as the two played in the clouds until they reach where the supplies are being delivered. Spyro landed, laughing as Sparx flew next to him, beginning to leaning on his horn.
"I don't know what gotten into you today" Sparx panted as Spyro got out the last of his laughter.
"Well you two certainly took your time getting here." a voice said as Spyro looks over to see a familiar slender black figure, "I was starting to wonder if I need to track you two down," she said to him.
"Sorry, Cynder" Spyro apologizes to her, "I overslept again haha..." he gave awkward laugh as Cynder leers at him for a moment, "So has anything happened," Spyro asked clearing his throat as he walked next to her.
"Nope nothing at all," she began, "The Grublins haven't shown themselves since I got here," she said as Spyro watches the dragons transporting the supplies carts with passive interest.
"Yeah…" Spyro said something about this that didn't sit well for him. However, he couldn't tell why could it have been the dreams he has been having? He didn't know as he tries to push the thoughts aside for now as he watched the supplies travel into Warfang.
"So, Spyro," Cynder said to him as she fiddles with her claws.
"Yeah, Cynder?" he asked her to turn his gaze back to her curiously, "What's up" he questions her seeing that she seems to be acting weird.
"Well, I was wondering if... maybe…" she said trying to gather the courage to say it as Spyro and Sparx look at one another then back at her, "Oh, never mind," she said.
"This is the first," Sparx said, "The dark princess is at a loss for words" the dragonfly tease as Cynder's eyes twitched.
"Oh yeah, now I remember," Cynder said her confidence seemingly returned to her, "Do you mind if I borrow Sparx? I got this new book recently but it's kind of hard to read it at night and I think he would make a perfect lantern!" she said with a mischievous grin.
"Eep!" Sparx said as he hid behind Spyro, "You're not going to let her talk to me like that are you buddy?" he asked Spyro as the dragon laughed.
"I don't know Sparx. I remember you did make for a good lantern for that one ape" Spyro teased the dragonfly.
"Not cool! I still have the burn marks from when you tried to set me on fire!" Sparx cried as Cynder busted out laughing.
"Oh my... Spyro did you really tried to set him on fire?" Cynder said through fits of laughter.
"It's not like I meant to try and burn him!" Spyro exclaimed defensively, "I mean it was the very first time I used my fire breath," he said sheepishly feeling a bit childish as he could feel his cheeks heating up.
"Aww, your blushing" Sparx teased him with a snicker,
"N-No I'm not!" Spyro exclaimed trying to hide his face.
"You are! You're totally blushing my dud-" Sparx started to tease him but before he could finish, a loud explosion was heard and felt across the fields of Warfang.
"What the-?!" Cynder exclaimed as she and Spyro stumble as the ground shook beneath him, Spyro looked below seeing the Moles scrambling around as the supply crates had fallen. Spyro flew down toward one of the Moles that had been pinned by a crate that had fallen off the cart as he pulled the heavy box off of the Mole,
"You alright," the purple dragon asked him.
"Yes, I'm fine! Thank you, Spyro" the Mole thanking him for freeing him.
"Purple!" Sparx called out to him as he flew by him, "You need to take a look at this." he told him before beckoning him to follow as he took off into the sky again.
Spyro spread his golden wings before he took off after his brother, following close behind the tiny golden insect until they found Cynder who hover in place with a look of surprise.
"Cynder?" Spyro questions her before he followed her gaze slowly his face held its own wide mouth in amazement as before them there was a magical tear right in there, shimmering like the sun sparkling on the surface of the water. An odd hum was in the air as the violet rift hovers in the air before them, "What is that…?" Spyro questions Cynder.
"I... I don't know…" she quietly answered back.
"It looks like a portal!" Sparx spoke up as both dragons tore their gazes away from the shimmering energy before them and back to Sparx, "What? Don't you two remember? You both went into that weird dimension thingy" Sparx told them.
"I don't remember ever seeing one of those" Cynder told the dragonfly.
"That's not true," Spyro said as it finally dawns on him what Sparx is talking about, "You open one before," Spyro told her, "You open a portal to that weird plain when you were under Malefor's control. Right after you drain Ignitus's power" Spyro told her.
"Oh right...I was trying to forget that time..." Cynder mumbled under her breath.
"Sorry…" Spyro said before falling silent.
"Anyways why is this portal doing here? Who could've opened it?" Cynder said shifting the subject back onto the portal.
After thinking for a moment, "Hmm...There is only one other person that I can think of…" Spyro began, "That being the Chronicler…" the purple dragon said as he turned his gaze back toward the shimmering purple tear in the space, "I'm going to take a closer look at it," Spyro said as he flew down toward it.
"Bro you don't know where it goes!" Sparx called after him, "I'll be careful I just want to take a closer look" the purple dragon said as he lands.
"Spyro, for once I agree with Sparx. We shouldn't get close to it. We don't know where it leads. Perhaps we should go get the Guardians" the black dragoness suggested as she lands right behind him. The purple dragon took a step closer to the portal, "Are you even listening, Spyro?"
"It would take too much time to go get the Guardians, besides, you know that Terrador and the others already have too much on their plates right now. With rebuilding Warfang, treating the wounded and..." Spyro stopped himself as he remembers Ignitus's sacrifice for them to get to Malefor after taking a deep breath, "... everything else" He started again pushing the memories to the side for now, "Besides, I'm not entering the portal I'm just going to have a closer look. We've beaten Malefor, I'm sure we're more than capable enough to handle whatever this is" Spyro said trying to reassure them.
"I don't know every time you mess with odd magical rifts bad things always happens to us " Sparx voicing his concern to them, however, they fell on deaf ears.
"Huh… This is strange… It's almost like-" Spyro started but then in a single instant something came shooting out of the portal. Whether it was through instinct or sheer dumb luck Spyro had stepped back, just barely avoiding what looks like a spear-like object, "Whoa!" Spyro exclaimed as he quickly leaps back to put distance between himself and whatever came out of the portal as Cynder quickly lowered her stance for battle.
"See this is why we don't get close to some freaky portal because something like THAT comes out of it" Sparx exclaims as Spyro lands beside him as he watched the "spear" carefully wrapped around the edge of the portal. A thin, boney humanoid creature with spear-like arms and legs as the orange-red creature's face appeared to be one gapping mouth with fangs it twitches unnaturally as it emerged out of the portal.
Spyro watched the wretched thing crawl out of the portal as its appearance visibility disturb the creature, "Wh…What in the world?..." Spyro said as he glances over at Cynder who looked just as disturbed as he was.
"I don-" Cynder was about to say before Sparx spoke up.
"Hey stop staring off into space and look out it is moving!" the dragonfly said as both dragons look back at the creature as soon as it thrust its spear-like arms out as it stretches toward them like a bullet.
"MOVE!" Spyro shouted as both he and Cynder leaped in the opposite direction avoiding its arms.
Spyro circles around the creature watching it closely as it started to retract its arms back as if it was made out of elastic before turn toward him again thrusting its arms out toward him. Spyro stomped on the ground, making the earth rise and surround him, forming a large boulder around himself as he spins deflecting the spear-like arms, "I got you! Earth Boulder!" he shouted launching himself at the creature at a high speed.
"Spyro look out!" Cynder shouted as suddenly he felt something break through the shell of stone and earth from behind shattering the boulder and causing him to lose control. He rolled on the ground, unable to stop himself as he crashed. There was a sharp sting sensation as well the warmth of blood on his side where he had been graze from the creature's arms as the purple dragon looked, seeing that the creature had bent its arm at an unnatural angle to redirect themselves back at him while he was charging at it with his Earth Boulder technique.
They were making another sharp turn heading straight for him as Spyro quickly got upholding his side as he leaps back to avoid its arms as the creature continue to stretch its limb and bending them unnaturally trying to impale him, "It is focused on me" Spyro thought, ducking under one of its arms before leaping to the side, "Meaning that he's not paying attention to Cynder" he exhaled as he glanced around, spotting Cynder taking a deep breath before unleashing a torrent of black flames down upon it. As shadow flames washed over the creature it lets out a blood-curdling screech of pain as its arms quickly retreat toward its body as Spyro took a sigh of relief. "Cutting it kind of close there aren't you?!" Spyro called out to her as Cynder hovered in the air.
"It was your fault for charging in there without thinking" Cynder retorted as Spyro was cracking a smile before he notices something moving within the black flames.
"CYNDER MOVE!" Spyro shouts at the black dragoness. However, before she could get a chance to react Spyro watched in horror as both of the creature's arms had pierced into Cynder's body as she started to cough up blood.
"Wh-Wha…" she managed to choke out in surprise as if her body or brain had not registered what has happened to her yet. However, the creature; with its arms still impaled into Cynder yanks her down slamming her headfirst into a stone boulder shattering it into pieces from the impact before withdrawing its arms out from the smoke.
"CYNDER!" both Sparx and Spyro cried out in horror as they began to race toward her but the creature was faster launching its blood cover arms at Spyro once again, forcing the young dragon to stop and jump back to invade its attack.
"Sparx!" Spyro called out, but the dragonfly was already moving.
"I'm already on it bro!" the dragonfly said as he flew past the creature who didn't seem to take notice of the insect as he flew toward the cloud of dirt and dust where Cynder landed
"I'm going to make you pay for that!" Spyro growls as he charges at the creature who twisted its arms causing them to shoot back toward Spyro who was prepared for the attack this time. He leaped up high into the air to avoid its arms as he surrounded himself in flames before he dove straight toward the creature.
"Comet Dash!" he shouts as the creature seeming looks up before leap back to avoid Spyro's attack. However, Spyro continues to press on the attack closing the distance between himself and the creature. Trying to remain rational despite his anger rising within him. However, every time he gets close to the creature it continues to run away. "Could it be that it only knows how to attack from a distance?" he wonders to himself as he chases after it, trying to keep the distance between them at a minimum so it wouldn't be able to retract its arms and use its ranged attack against him, Cynder, or Sparx.
"Stop moving!" he angrily spat as he unleashed a torrent of flame, which caused the creature to leap over the breath attack. It started to spin like a deadly top as it started to come straight toward him, "Crap!" Spyro thought as he jumped back to avoid the top however, it continues to move cutting down a tree with ease as Spyro was forced to land as there was a shallow cut that appeared close to his neck as he started to bleed from the freshly made wound.
"Shhh-… If I had moved just a second later…" he thought as the vision of what could have happened appeared through his mind, But he shook it off as soon as he saw the deadly top coming after him again.
"Not this time!" Spyro exclaimed as he charges in, "Earth Boulder!" he shouted surrounding himself with stone and earth. Once the two collided against one another, sparks started to fly as two attacks bounce off of one another. However, they rotated around one another before clashing in the middle again, both trying to overpower the other to stop their rotation as sparks dance between them. Spyro grits his teeth feeling the earth shell around him tremble with each hit. Knowing that his Earth Boulder wouldn't hold up much longer, Spyro gave one final clash against the creature's spinning attack before he broke out of the boulder from the top all the while his tail was growing stiff and cold, "Take this you bastard! Ice Tail!" he shouted as he swung his tail like a blade to cleaving downward to try and cut the creature in half.
He had timed it perfectly he had started the attack while he was still within the shell of his Earth Boulder, he was certain that he attacked its blind spot and from above while the creature was spinning horizontally. He had everything in his favor... so then why the sound of ice and bone colliding echo loudly in the field, why did sparks fly out into the air? Why did his Ice Tail stop before it hit its mark? This creature had blocked his attack as its arms were once again bent so unnaturally; its arms were held above its head, blocking and holding onto Spyro's tail in place as the ground beneath it crumbles away under the weight of the force of Spyro's attack. He growled as he kicks the creature, forcing it to let go of him. Spyro flips through the air catching himself with his hand before bouncing back to his feet. He quickly lowers himself in a defensive stance as the creature was knocked away sliding along the ground before it stabbed one of its bloodstain arms into the ground to stop itself from going any further. Cold sweat rolled down the back of Spyro's neck as he was panting, whatever this…thing is…it's clearly more skilled than Spyro's previous foes. Not only that it seems that it could bend and twist its body to adapt to its opponent's moves. Spyro glances over at his foster brother and Cynder as Sparx was trying to wake the wounded dragoness.
"I have to get this thing away from them..." Spyro thought as he looks back at the creature who pulled out its arms from the ground as it stood up facing Spyro as it tilts its head absentmindedly. Spyro growled as he glares down at the creature as he looks around to try and see if there was anywhere they could go and away from Cynder and Sparx. That is when his dark blue eyes stop upon the violet portal which still shimmers like a small pool of water as it hums with energy.
"That's it! That's my only chance!" he shouted as he charged at the creature it begins to launch its arms at him again as Spyro ducks under its attack and out of the corner of his eye he saw the tips of the spear bent at an odd angle once again to try and impale him. "Not happening I saw that trick already!" Spyro growled as he spun around, "Earth Flail!" he calls out summoning the energy as a bright green orb shot out of his mouth smashing it into the arms knocking them off course as the creature began to retract its arms. Spyro bit the chain of his Earth Flail causing it to dissipate as he completes the turn facing the creature again as he bent his knees and lower his stance as he let the heat of his inner fire spread throughout his body and allowed the flames to consume him.
"Into Comet DASH!" he shouts as brilliant flames burst from his body as he launches himself like a rocket faster than the creature could retract its arms back to defend himself crash right into the creature's gut as there was a loud sickening crack which rang out as Spyro push pass it as he slid to a stop, "That's a solid hit! But it's not over yet!" Spyro reminded himself, he spun his still burning body to charge at the creature again. "Sparx go get help for Cynder! Comet Dash!" he said before launching himself at the creature who was still stunned from the previous attack.
"Wait! What?! Spyro what are-" Sparx called out but Spyro didn't hear anything else, focused on his target he tackles the creature one more time with Comet Dash ramming both himself and the creature into the portal as there was a loud clap of thunder. There was a jolt as both the creature and Spyro were violently thrown out of the portal. However, they were no longer in open fields near Warfang. No, they were in a thick forest with trees as far as the eye could see, "Where…" Spyro started to wonder as he got up however, the creature's hot out at him interrupting his curious thoughts and causing him to duck as it impaled the tree behind him.
"What the-?! By the Ancestors, you've got to be kidding me?!" Spyro grumbles as he rushed forward, "Just go down already! Ice Spikes!" Spyro shouts unleash a barrage of ice shards at the creature as it covers his head as the shard hits the creature as it was blown back against into the tree where its body was being impaled with his Ice Spike attack until its body started to be cover in ice and frozen into place.
Spyro lets out a sigh of relief since the creature didn't show any signs of movement as it was frozen in place, "Thank goodness…" he sighed as he started to turn his back on the creature, "Now I need to find a way to get back to Cynder and Sparx" he thought to himself as he looks around in the unfamiliar forest. Where did that portal take him? Spyro sniffs the air hoping to catch the scent of something familiar. But, the air has a completely different scent to it. He couldn't smell the lingering scent of brimstone from the Burned Lands; a scar from Malefor's invasion of Warfang three months prior. Instead, he caught the scent of...roses? The scent of roses hung heavy in the air. He was able to catch other scents of flowers but none that he could recognize off the back of his hand. In truth, he wasn't sure if what he is currently smelling is Roses. However, wherever that portal sent him. He doesn't think he is in Warfang anymore.
There was no point in him hanging around in this forest, he should probably try to find his way out of the forest. Once he is out of here he could fly around until he can locate a village or city in hopes to find out where he was. That way he could plan his next course of action. Surely someone must know how to get back to Warfang... Right?
Pushing his doubts aside he was about to turn and walk away he heard a sound that sent chills down his spine. That is when he heard the sound for a second time. The sound of ice cracking. He didn't waste any time in turning around so fast he was surprised he didn't snap his neck.
"No way!" Spyro exclaimed and as soon as the words escape his mouth the ice suddenly shatter as the creature was once again free and already going on the offensive as it launches its spear-like arms at him. There wasn't enough time for him to move out of the way, he couldn't move his arms up in time to defend himself. All he could do was watched its spear-like arms coming closer and closer as he could see his life was coming closer to the end.
However, another voice echo throughout the forest as there was a massive explosion of flames knocking the purple dragon back several feet away, "Dog Walker!" a powerful voice exclaimed over the roaring flames as Spyro turn back while on the ground watching a massive hound made entirely of flames has come forth from the flames pounce onto the creature. The beast bit into the creatures head as it unleashes a terrible wail as the massive burning dog tore the creature's head off of it, causing its head and body to burst into orange energy, which dissipates into the ground as Spyro look into the flames as the hound returns into the mass of fire. Spyro could make out a vague silhouette of a massive dragon and as the flames started to die down Spyro caught a glimpse of red scales as suddenly he was reminded of the very first time he witnesses an Elemental Fury attack as a glimmer of hope was ignited into the young dragon's heart, "Ig-Ignitus?!" Spyro exclaimed without even realizing what he was saying as the dragon turned around to face him.
