Chapter 24
Kinnow Island, Navel Island and Seven Grapefruit Islands
Ash and the gang were having a relaxing break on a beach of Kinnow Island. It had been quite the two weeks for them. First they had visited an island named Pinkan Island. It was called that because there were these fruit trees that bore special pink berries that would turn a pokemon pink, if it ate it. Pikachu tried a pink berry and it made his tail turn pink. Next they visited a stage boat. Instead of people acting on stage shows, it was pokemon doing all the acting. The clever thing was that the pokemon did all the talking and dancing. Of course the pokemon couldn't really talk; it was human actors acting out their voices from back stage, while the pokemon just mimed the voices. Ash and the gang found that out after they saw a performance and promised to keep it all a secret.
Ash and Tomo were playing with Pikachu and Growlithe in the sand and Tracey was sketching in his paper pad. Meanwhile Misty was training her pokemon. Right now she was training her Psyduck and Goldeen. Psyduck was practising its water gun attack. "Your Psyduck is doing well Misty" said Ash. "You're right Ash," said Misty, with a smile, "thank you for helping me help Psyduck learn calm mind". She remembered that Ash's Psyduck turned out to be a real fighter, before it evolved into Golduck, because the move calm mind helped Psyduck become a great fighter. So Misty decided to have her Psyduck learn calm mind to help it become a great fighter. "Ash told me that both he and you have got a Golduck" said Tracey. "That's correct" said Misty "my Golduck is back at the Cerulean Gym". "I'd like to visit your gym sometime Misty" said Tracey.
Just then another Psyduck popped out of the ocean. "Where did that come from?" asked Misty. "Sorry that Psyduck is mine" said a voice. The voice belonged to a girl, with blue hair. "My name is Marina," she said "and I'm a water pokemon trainer". "What a coincidence," said Misty "I'm Misty and I'm a water pokemon trainer too". "Really?" said Marina "do you love water pokemon?" "Yes I do" answered Misty. Misty and Marina began chatting away about their admiration of water pokemon. "Those two sure love water pokemon very much" said Tracey. "I feel bored listening to this" said Tomo. Just then Marina suggested that they had a water pokemon battle. Misty liked the idea and agreed.
Marina and Misty stood on two big stones as platforms, while the battlefield was the ocean. Marina sent out her Tentacruel, while Misty sent out her Goldeen. "Wow Misty your Goldeen is gorgeous" said Marina. "And your Tentacruel is charming Marina" said Misty. "Oh boy," said Ash "this is going to take all day". Marina ordered her Tentacruel to use wrap on Goldeen. "Quick Goldeen use agility" said Misty. Thanks to the speed of agility, Golden managed to dodge Tentacruel's tentacles. "Now use supersonic" Misty said to Goldeen. Goldeen's horn glowed a light blue and released some blue circles from it straight to Tentacruel; which made it confused. "Now use horn attack". Goldeen hit Tentacruel with its sharp horn, causing it pain. Marina was getting worried. "Tentacruel use poison sting". Tentacruel fired some purple spikes from its mouth and purple spikes hit Goldeen causing it to faint. "Goldeen return" said Misty, returning it to its pokeball. Misty sent out Staryu. Marina ordered her Tentacruel to use poison sting again. "Staryu use swift" said Misty. Staryu fired stars from its jewel and the star broke the poison spikes and struck Tentacruel, causing it to faint. Marina sent out her Psyduck. Misty ordered her Staryu to use water gun. "Use confusion" said Marina. Psyduck's eyes glowed blue and its power made the water gun hit Staryu instead, causing it to faint. Misty called out her Psyduck to battle Marina's Psyduck.
Suddenly a blue duck popped out of the ocean. "Hey it's a Golduck" said Misty. Marina squealed. "Golduck's my favourite water pokemon. I'm going to catch it". She asked her Psyduck to use scratch on the Golduck. Golduck winced a bit. "Now use confusion". Psyduck's eyes glowed blue and held Golduck into the air. Marina tossed an empty pokeball and caught the Golduck. Marina squealed in delight, happy to have captured it. "Congratulations Marina," said Misty. "Shall we continue the battle?" "Yes let's" said Marina.
In the end it turned out in a draw. Misty's Psyduck vs. Marina's Psyduck fought well against each other and both of them fainted together in the end.
After the battle it was time for the gang to leave Kinnow Island. "Thanks for the battle Misty" said Marina. "You too Marina," said Misty "and good luck with your new Golduck". So after bidding farewell to Marina, the gang left on Lapras.
The gang arrived at an island named Navel Island. "Here I can get my second Orange League badge", said Ash "question is, where the gym is though?" "You kids lost?" said a voice. The voice belonged to man, with a big back pack on his shoulder. "Actually we are," said Ash "we are looking for the Navel Gym". "I will take you there," said the man "I know the gym very well". "You have a huge back pack there" said Tracey, pointing to the man's back pack. "Ah well I use this to store whatever I need on my journeys," said the man "it is always best to be prepared. My name is Danny". Ash, Misty, Tomo and Tracey smiled at what Danny had said; they also knew that it was best to be prepared.
Danny led the gang to the foot of the big mountain that stood on Navel Island. "This is the gym" said Danny. "You mean instead of a building, the Navel Gym is actually a mountain?" gasped Ash. "That is correct," said Danny, he then pointed to a gate at the foot of the mountain, "when you pass through that gate, the challenge starts". Ash and Tracey walked up to the gate and pushed it open. Through the gate was a path that led up to the mountain. Tracey saw a sign board and looked at it. "This sign post says that challengers for the gym have to climb up the mountain and those who are not challengers can take the cable car" he said. "Well that doesn't seem so bad" said Ash. "Oh hold on," said Tracey "it says that the challengers must not use any pokemon for help up at the mountain, or they will be disqualified". "Oh boy," sighed Ash "well since I need this gym's badge, I must as well do it".
Ash, Pikachu and Danny started to climb up the mountain, while Tomo, Tracey and Misty took the cable car. Danny was climbing the mountain easily, but Ash was finding it a bit difficult; he had never climbed up a mountain before. Suddenly Ash slipped and fell down, but luckily he managed to grab a ledge. Pikachu jumped down the mountain to see if Ash was okay. "I'm okay buddy" replied Ash. Ash wanted to call out Ivysaur for help, but he knew he couldn't because of the rules. Danny watched Ash with admiration as he began to start climbing again. Soon Ash and Danny took a rest. "Man this is hard work," sighed Ash "climbing a mountain is tougher than climbing a tree".
After the climbing, Ash, Pikachu and Danny had to now walk up to the top. At the top was snow and the cold snowy wind was blowing fiercely. Pikachu was getting exhausted by the strong wind and fell over into the snow. Ash saw that and ran over to Pikachu. "Here buddy I'll carry you" said Ash, holding Pikachu into his arms. Danny smiled seeing the close bond that Ash had with his Pikachu.
Finally Ash, Pikachu and Danny reached the top of the mountain. Misty, Tracey and Tomo, who were wrapped up in blankets to keep warm, saw them walk up the mountain. Tomo and Growlithe rushed over at once to see if Ash and Pikachu were okay. "It's okay Tomo" Ash said, rubbing Tomo's head. "Well Ash," said Danny "after seeing you climbing up the mountain, I have to say I'm happy to have you as my challenger". "Wait," said Ash "so Danny you're?" "That's right; I'm the gym leader of Navel Gym". The gang was surprised. "Now Ash, the real challenge begins".
Apparently climbing up the mountain wasn't the only challenge of the Navel Gym. Ash had to go through three challenges to get the badge. Danny led Ash to two geysers. "Our first challenge is a frozen geyser race," said Danny "we each use one pokemon, who knows ice attacks, to freeze a hot water geyser. The one to freeze their geyser first wins this challenge". Ash chose Lapras and Danny used Nidoqueen for this challenge. Both Lapras and Nidoqueen used ice beam to freeze the geysers. It was a close call, but Danny won the first challenge. Lapras felt bad for loosing, but Ash petted his head. "That's okay," he said "I'll win the next challenge".
The next challenge turned out to be a sort of ice sculpturing race. The challengers had to carve the frozen geysers into sleds, using their pokemon. Danny used Nidoqueen, Scyther and Machoke, while Ash used Pikachu, Ivysaur and Flareon. Thanks to Flareon's flamethrower, Ash won the second round. So right now it was a tie between Ash and Danny. "Well Ash this has been a very good challenge so far," said Danny "but now it's time for the final challenge".
The final challenge was a sled race. Both Danny and Ash had to race down the mountain, on the ice sleds with three pokemon in tow. "The finish line is on the beach," said Danny "and who ever cross it first wins". Danny had Scyther, Geodude and Electrode in his sled with him, and Ash had Pikachu, Wartortle and Ivysaur in his sled. Danny and Ash got into position at the start line, on top of the mountain. Then when the signal lights, at the start line, went from red to green, Ash and Danny raced down the mountain at once. Tomo, Misty and Tracey went into the cable car to get down from the mountain and to watch and see who would cross the finish line first.
Ash and Danny raced down the mountain, on their sleds, like crazy. They were both eager to cross the finish line first. Danny's Scyther steered the sled with its scythes, and Ash's Ivysaur steered the sled with its vines. It was a bit of a bumpy ride, but Ash didn't give up. Soon the terrace had changed from snow to rock. At that time Ash's sled began to fall apart a bit because of the hard rock terrace. Danny was getting near the finish line, but Ash was catching up to him fast. Because the sled began to break apart, it was becoming lighter, which made the sled pick up more speed. Then at last, Ash crossed the finish line first and landed into the ocean. Ash, Pikachu, Ivysaur and Wartortle were wet, but they were also happy for winning the race.
After getting out of the ocean, Ash walked up to Danny. "Ash you gave me the best challenge, that I ever had," said Danny "and I say congratulations on your win. And I also present to you the Sea-Ruby Badge". The Sea-Ruby Badge was a white oyster shell shape badge, with a small green gemstone on it. Ash thanked Danny and received his second Orange League badge.
With the Navel Gym finished with, Ash and the gang bid farewell to Danny and left Navel Island on Lapras.
The gang had just arrived on another island. "I wonder what island this is" said Ash. "This is one of the islands of Seven Grapefruit Islands," said Tracey "there are seven mini islands here that grow grapefruit. So they're called the Seven Grapefruit Islands". "Hey look at that" said Tomo. Tomo had seen a grapefruit tree, but when the others saw it they couldn't believe their eyes. The grapefruit were bigger than normal grapefruit. "Wow they look big" said Misty. "They also look delicious," said Ash "do you think that we are allowed to pick some?"
Before Ash's answer could be heard, another voice was heard. "Hold it right there!" The voice belonged to a green haired woman. "Hands off the grapefruit thieves!" she shouted. The gang was shocked; they had only been on the island for a few minutes and they were already in trouble. "Do excuse me miss but you're making a mistake" said Ash. "That's right, we just got here" said Tracey. The woman introduced herself as Ruby and apologized to the gang about her action just now. Ruby also explained that she ran the Seven Grapefruit Islands and that she and her staff are the ones who grow the grapefruit. "How do you get them to be so big?" asked Misty. "With a lot of care and attention," said Ruby "and of course the wild Butterfree help us out too with their pollen". "So what did you mean when you could us thieves?" asked Tracey. Ruby explained that someone had been stealing the grapefruits. "The thief does it so fast, that my staff and I don't have a chance to stop him". Ash and the gang offered to help and Ruby accepted it.
Ruby led the gang to where the grapefruit thief had already struck. "What a mess!" said Misty. Not only did the trees not have any grapefruit on them, but they looked like that the top of the trees had been eaten off, and broken branches, leaves and left over grapefruit lay everywhere. "Wow the thief really did outdo himself" said Tracey. Just then one of Ruby's staff turned up. "We have spotted the thief on the radar" he said. Ruby and the gang went to find the thief.
When they reached to where the thief was, the thief turned out to be a Snorlax.
"Hey it's Snorlax" said Ash, and opened his pokedex: Snorlax, the sleeping pokemon. Snorlax isn't satisfied until it's eaten about 900 pounds of food each day, after which it promptly goes to sleep.
Snorlax was picking branches off the trees and gobbling up the grapefruit. It was also spitting out the seeds. "So this pokemon is the one who stole the grapefruit" said Ruby. Soon Snorlax had eaten every grapefruit on the first Seven Grapefruit Island. "Well since the other Seven Grapefruit Islands aren't joined together, surely they would be safe" said Misty. But Misty was wrong; the Snorlax went into the ocean and began to swim to the second Seven Grapefruit Island. "I've never seen a Snorlax swim before" gasped Misty. "That must have been how Snorlax got here in the first place" said Tracey. "Come on," said Ruby "we need to go to stop Snorlax".
The group got to the second island by boat just in time; Snorlax hadn't shown up yet. "Okay so how do we stop Snorlax?" asked Misty. "Prof Oak warned me about Snorlax one time," said Ash "he told me that even though they can be rather strong pokemon, eating and sleeping are the things they really care about. He also told me they can be really stubborn pokemon. So trying to speak to Snorlax to get him to stop won't work". "Then what can we do big brother?" asked Tomo. "We will have to battle it," said Ash "and I have the perfect pokemon to fight it". Tomo and Misty smiled; they knew what pokemon Ash meant.
When Snorlax reached the island it rushed to a grapefruit tree at once. "Hold it right there Snorlax," shouted Ash "sorry but you are not taking any more of these grapefruits". Snorlax ignored him. "Okay then you have given me no choice, I choose you Kangaskhan!" Kangaskhan roared as soon as she got out of her pokeball. "Wow," said Tracey "it's rare to get a Kangaskhan". Kangaskhan's roars got Snorlax's attention at once. Snorlax stepped forward to fight; apparently it didn't like being interrupted when about to eat something. "Use work up" Ash commanded Kangaskhan. Kangaskhan glowed a reddish colour and got ready to attack. "Now use mega punch". Kangaskhan punched Snorlax's jaws very hard. Thanks to the move work up, Kangaskhan's attacks became strong. Snorlax got hurt from that punch and began to get angry and serious. It jumped at showed its left leg at Kangaskhan. "It's going to use mega kick" said Tracey. "Counter it with your own mega kick" said Ash. Kangaskhan jumped at kicked Snorlax. Snorlax started to feel really hurt. "Okay now use focus blast". Kangaskhan formed a light blue ball of energy from her hands and fired it at Snorlax, hitting it directly. Snorlax began panting heavily; the focus blast really took a lot out of it. "Okay now's my chance," said taking, taking out an empty pokeball, "let's go pokeball". The pokeball hit Snorlax and sucked it into the pokeball. The pokeball shook three times then at last it was captured, then it transported itself to Prof Oak. Ash cheered and thanked Kangaskhan. Kangaskhan picked up Ash and gave him a hug; she liked Ash very much.
Ruby was grateful, now that Snorlax had been dealt with. "I can't thank you enough," she said "now we won't need to worry about the grapefruit trees anymore". "Too bad that Snorlax ate all the fruit on the first grapefruit island" said Tracey. "No need to worry," said Ruby "they will grow again by next year". She gave the gang a bag of candied grapefruit peels as a thank you gift. "Well gang," said Ash "it's high time we went". Misty, Tomo and Tracey agreed.
So the gang said good bye to Ruby and her staff and headed off for the next Orange Island adventure.
Since Misty already had a Golduck I decided to give it to Marina. Now I am not going to do the Kalos region. Because the anime of that has only started and would take 2 or 3 years to finish. I'm sorry to all you readers, but that is what I've decided. Oh and to answer a previous question. The reason why Ash could understand Pokémon was because his Psychic abilities hlp him read the mind, heart and soul of pokemon.
