Chapter Thirty-Eight
Shuhei's POV
I never thought in a million years that I would be visiting Ugendo. Just looking at the estate made me nervous. I looked to Midori and smiled. She was pretty yes, but was I really ready to meet her parents? If she were the daughter of another man I probably would not have any problem, so was I just insecure because she was the daughter of a captain? Of course! One foul up and I'll have immense spirit energy from not one but several captains on my tail. Captain Kyōraku was being nice while making conversation after he caught his make-shift niece and I kissing, I would not put it past him to shove one of his swords under my nose if I hurt her. Not that I wanted to, but…
"Come on, my folks are expecting us." Midori stated softly. I smiled knowing that I was not the only one that was nervous. I walked closer to the entrance and stopped. Captain Ukitake was waiting just outside the door! He looked at me in a less than nice manner. "Jūshirō?! What are you doing out there?!" I heard a voice call for him. "Dad!" Midori called out and ran to him. Ukitake smiled and wrapped his daughter in an embrace. He looked up at me and I felt my blood ran cold at his cautioning stare. I had no foul intentions but it felt like he was trying to look for something. "So Dad, this is Shuhei Hisagi." Midori tried to break the tension by introducing us while giving her father enough space to shake my hand, "Shuhei, this is my dad." "Nice to meet you Captain Ukitake." I greeted, extending my hand politely. Midori's father looked at me for a moment while plastering a light smile on his face while taking my hand a little too tightly and gave it a firm shake. "Nice to meet you, Hisagi."
I felt a little trapped, I thought he did not like using last names. Does he not like me or something? I don't understand, From what I heard; he was supposed to be the captain that was the most understanding. The sound of footsteps caught my attention and another face came into my line of vision. Midori's mother, it had to have been, I was more scared of her than I was of her husband. Judging by how he was acting, she might be worse considering who she is. "Hi mom," Midori greeted brightly while wrapping the woman in a one-armed embrace. "It's about time you said something to me." Midori's mother replied, kissing her daughter's temple before commenting, "Stop soft-soaping your dad and introduce your guest." My girl blushed and introduced, "Mom, this is Shuhei Hisagi. Shuhei, mom." She looked me over for a moment as if she did not know what to think of me and I dumbly extended my hand out to hers. "Nice to meet you Mrs. Ukitake." I greeted . She gave me a soft expression and took my hand for the sake of politeness. "I didn't think you would actually come and be this calm. Most young men would be scared witless of lousing up somehow."
She was impressed? Really? Well, all I had to do was impress Midori's dad. I looked over to him and felt sick inside. He was bound to kill me by the end of this visit. Lady Ukitake smiled at me softly and gestured for me to follow her as she grabbed the captain's hand. "Come on, Shuhei, you can't possibly be comfortable out here. Let's all go inside and talk." she invited. She gave her husband a tug on the arm leading him away from us. I looked to Midori and she smiled uneasily at me and held my hand. "I guess dad will have to get used to you." she told me and I could not help but to have a shred of hope that he would. I followed the Soul Reapers into the house.
