No 1. Hanging (160 words)

Chase's arms were burning. Thick coarse ropes snaked into tight knots that pulled his whole body upwards. His toes were barely touching the ground, rendering him uncapable of taking the weight off his screaming shoulders. He could feel blood trickle down from his wrists with each heartbeat, as every twitch sent fire through his veins.

Bionics disabled and hanging from the ceiling like some drying piece of meat, Chase was completely helpless. Unable to do anything as the door to the basement swung open violently. He barely had the energy to flinch as multiple footsteps crashed down the stairs, eyes too heavy to open. This was surely it...

"CHASE!"

He could have cried at the sound of his siblings' voices – terrified and panicked as they may be. They were familiar and like angels sent from heaven. And as the burning of his wrists were replaced by frantic hands catching his body, Chase felt utterly irrefutably safe.

His family was there.
