No 4. Collapsed Building (325 words)

"Adam!" Bree shouted as she ran up to her older brother. A cut on his forehead was sluggishly oozing blood down his face. Adam winced slightly as she helped him back up on his feet, one arm wrapped across his ribs. "Are you okay?"

"Where's Chase?" he asked worriedly, ignoring the question.

Their gazes flittered across the ruined remains of the collapsed building. Fear and guilt swirled in Bree. She should have made sure they got out. But there just hadn't been any time. If she hadn't moved when she did, they would all have been buried.

"..help..."

The cry was barely audible but it immediately sent the two siblings rushing toward their little brother.

By some miracle Chase hadn't been completely caught under the collapse, although a huge piece of the roof – or maybe it had once been a wall? – was pinning him down to the ground. His hair was matted with blood and his whole body shook with a rattling cough.

"Hold on, Chase," Bree murmured as she fell to her knees by his head. She gently grabbed one of his hands, his fingers weakly wrapping around hers.

"Okay, I'm going to lift this on three, ready?" Adam said, positioning himself by the debris. Bree nodded her head, slowly letting go of Chase. Chase on the other hand just squeezed his eyes shut tightly, his breaths wheezing.

"1... 2... 3!"

As Adam lifted, Bree pulled Chase out of the way. Although she tried to be as gentle as she could, Chase still cried out in pain. The sounds like knives to his siblings' hearts. Adam dropped the piece again and quickly crouched by his younger siblings. As Bree removed her hand from Chase's back it was covered in blood.

"We need to get him out of here now," she whispered horrified. Adam nodded somberly before carefully lifting his baby brother into his arms.

"It's okay, Chasey, we've got you. Everything will be okay."
