Jason's POV
"Piper!" I called as I walked up to her, a smile plastered on my face. She looked beautiful, as usual. She always did…in my eyes anyway.
When she looked out from her locker and spotted me, her face broke into a wide grin and she waved back in earnest.
"Jason!" She exclaimed cheerfully, closing her locker door and pulling me into a tight hug, which I returned. By now, I was used to the wistful and jealous looks every single boy in the area was shooting at me, and ignored them without any difficulty.
It becomes a norm after experiencing it ever since I got one of the prettiest and hottest girls in school as a girlfriend.
"Any plans today?" I asked. She shook her head as she stepped back.
"None…so, lunch?" She asked hopefully. I chuckled at the obvious display of cheekiness.
"Are you actually asking for a date, Piper?" I laughed. She mock glared at me and huffed.
"Well, since someone clearly doesn't want my company, I'll just have to take my lunch alone, without anyone to talk to. I'll be just a lonesome figure, sitting on the chair as I stare out of the window and wonder why I'm always alone when I actually have a boy-"
"Hey, hey, no false accusations," I cut her off, flicking her forehead with my finger. She winced and jerked back from me slightly before glaring sharp pointy daggers at me.
"Whatever," She mumbled. I smirked at her and wrapped an arm around her, pulling her close to me.
"C'mon," I smiled down at her as she looked up at me with curious eyes. "We'll go wherever you wanna go to eat."
Her whole body perked up and she gave me a wide smile. "YES!" She exclaimed and punched her fist into the air in victory. I shook my head at her exaggerated actions.
"So," I started as we walked out of the school. "Where you wanna go for lunch?" She pondered for a moment, her finger tapping her cheek-a habit she had developed for years.
"I wanna try out your cooking, so…your place?" She asked me brightly. I jerked away and stared at her, aghast.
"No way in hell!" I immediately protested. "You'll probably get food poisoning for years." I added. She shook her head and gave out a soft laugh.
"C'mon, Jason. I don't think you're that bad," She pressed on.
"But-"
"No buts, Jason. We're going to your place now." Piper said, and I knew it was final. I sighed in defeat and gestured for her to follow me.
"Fine, but don't blame me if you land in the hospital," I warned her. She gave me an extremely evil look.
"Oh, don't worry," She said. "If I land in the hospital, you're paying the bills." She convulsed wit laughter as I groaned in exasperation.
"Woah," was the first sound that came out of her mouth as we stepped into Percy's house. "You live here?" She asked in amazement. I nodded.
"Yea, but its not my house," I said, walking towards my room to place my bag down.
"Whose house is it then?" She asked, her voice echoing throughout the house. I briefly wondered whether this was how Percy survived everyday before Thalia and I moved in.
Echoes heard after every sound is made, without anyone to talk to or just spend time with.
I had never lived that way before. I had been with Zues before he passed away, and even though life wasn't good at that woman's house, at least there was always the knowledge that Thalia was in the other room.
In this humongous house, with so many empty rooms…Percy probably felt lonely every time he came back to the house.
Maybe that's why he seemed to be so kind to everyone, to be able to accept him and Thalia into his house easily, to always reach out to lonely people like Annabeth and Thalia.
He knew how lonely one could be, and he knew how important company was to everyone. He knew the feeling of being alone.
And there was more to him that meets the eye.
For some reason, I think…I think he knows more about pain than anyone else. I don't know why I think that way, but…I just don't know.
Its like there's an aura around him that emits pure sadness and pain, that emits loneliness and grief. It was very faint, but there.
"Percy's," I replied shortly as the thoughts went though my head.
"You live with Percy?" she asked. I nodded.
"Thalia and I live here with Percy due to…some circumstances." I explained, just touching the surface, careful not to go too in depth.
Piper looked at me critically, knowing that I was holding something back, but decided not to push on-which I was grateful for.
"So, what do you ant to eat?" I asked, praying to the gods that she would pick something I actually knew hot to cook decently.
"Hm…" She hummed a tune as she wondered, tapping her cheek again. Finally, her eyes focused back on me and she grinned.
"Carbonara?" She said unsurely, giving me a questioning look. I heaved a huge sigh of relief. I thanked the gods that my Dad had taught me how to cook carbonara years ago.
The thought of my Dad sent a wave of longing down upon me. I missed him so much. I never appreciated him in the past, and only now, when he's gone, then I cherish him.
"Always too late, huh?" I thought bitterly.
"Are you not okay with it?" Piper asked a little timidly, shaking me out of my trance. I realized I had been letting my emotions show, and that probably didn't look too pleasing to Piper.
"Sorry, sorry, got lost in my thoughts for a moment," I gave her an apologetic smile. "By the way, I know how to cook it, so no worries!" I announced cheerfully.
When she heard me, her face lightened up significantly, and she gave me a happy smile.
"Lucky me!" She proclaimed and laughed.
"Go put your bag on the sofa and rest. Don't go upstairs though…that's kind of out of bounds." I told her. She nodded without hesitation
"Percy's house, right? Means a hell lotta secrets then." She commented with a hint of seriousness in her tone before walking towards the sofa. I, on the other hand, made my way to the kitchen to prepare the carbonara.
"So, how's living in this house?" Piper questioned before slurping on more of her carbonara.
"Well, its quite good. I get my own room, get to do whatever I want, and its comfortable and cozy." I replied with a shrug.
"Hm…what about Percy?" She asked. I focused on her, a little puzzled about where that question came from.
"…What about him?" I asked.
"Like…how does he spend his time?" I thought about it for a moment before replying.
"Well, he's pretty cool. He's kind, caring, and really friendly. And he spends a lot of time with Annabeth," She snickered at the mention of Annabeth.
"Those two should really be a couple already," She stated.
"I couldn't agree more." I said, nodding my head.
"Y'know," She started. "They're not the usual 'clueless about their feelings' type of couple like most others are." I frowned in confusion.
"What do you mean?"
"It's not that they are clueless about their feelings for each other. It's that they actually really think they have absolutely no feelings for each other at all," Piper further explained.
"Usually, in other couples, they would both be denying their feelings, or just ignoring them,. For these two, I think that they are just developing feelings for each other." My eyes widened in surprise.
"Are you serious?" I asked in disbelief. "They've been acting like a couple for over two years!" I exclaimed loudly.
"That was sibling love, and they both actually know its sibling love. Right now, they are really just developing their feelings." Piper said, without a hint of doubt in her voice.
I put down my fork and sat back in my chair, trying to get my head around that fact. All this time, everyone's been thinking that the two should be a couple. People even talked about it to them, but they always waved it off without even a single blush.
They always put It down to their extremely proficient acting, but now…maybe it wasn't acting at all. Maybe they were really just waving it off because they truly did not feel anything for each other at that time.
"You're pretty shocked, huh?" Piper asked, giving me a cheeky smile. I sighed.
"So you're saying th-" I was cut off by the sound of the front door opening. That's weird. No one ever came back this early.
Percy's face suddenly appeared at the entrance to the dining hall. At first, a look of pain had been on his face, but it was so brief that I wondered whether it had been there at all. It had been replaced by a look of utmost bewilderment.
"…Piper?" He called.
"Uh…hi?" She greeted unsurely. Percy's eyes travelled to me, and he raised his eyebrow in question.
"Uh, thought about bringing her for lunch today. Is it okay?" I asked, a little afraid he would say no and chase her out of the house.
I shouldn't have expected him to flare up or anything. It was just so Percy to give a huge grin to someone who didn't have the permission to enter his house and say "Welcome to my humble abode!"
Piper sat there, stunned for a moment, before smiling awkwardly in return.
"Thanks for uh…not chasing me out," She thanked. Percy waved her off.
"No need for that. You two enjoy your time!" He said, with a mischievous grin on his face, before disappearing into his house.
We sat there in stunned silence for a few seconds before bursting into a fit of laughter.
"That's Percy for you!" Piper said between gasps of laughter. I nodded, laughing less hysterically than Piper, but still unable to rein it in.
That day was a good day for me.
I didn't know that it had been a really bad day for Percy. Only when I reached school the next day, did I find out what had happened to Percy.
