Percy's POV
Finding out that Luke castellan, of all the damn people in the world, was enrolling here, into this very school, was a very, very disturbing thought for me.
I knew him, somewhat. Rumors about him spread like wildfire across the world when he had joined the swordsmanship sport. He had won medal after medal, trophy after trophy, defeating every single opponent he had faced in an arena.
That, however, wasn't the reason why I was so disturbed and worried that he had enrolled here.
It was how he had become so good at it that disturbed me. I wasn't looking forward to meeting him.
After all, if he found out who I was, my past would definitely be revealed to everyone in school. The very thought about my past darkened my mood. The thought of everyone finding out about my past made me feel even worse.
"Percy!" Thalia's voice echoed through the hallway. The panic and urgency in her voice caused my attention to immediately zero in on her as she barged through the crowd to get to me. I quickly did what I had to do at the locker and closed it just as she reached.
"What's wrong? What happened?" I asked worriedly as she stopped in front of me, panting and gasping as she tried to recover from her sprint.
"Annabeth…hysterical…sobbing…restroom," She gasped in between short and light breaths. A cold feeling settled at the pit of my stomach. Annabeth. Something had happened to her.
"Which restroom?" I asked. Thalia immediately turned around and signaled for me to follow her as she walked back the way she came. As soon as she turned, all the students at the hallway parted like the red sea. I guess having Thalia barging into them wasn't exactly the most pleasant feeling they have felt.
Clearing my head of those useless thoughts, I shifted my attention back to the current situation and hurried after Thalia. I could feel the hundreds of pairs of eyes staring at us as we made our way through the path the students have made for us, but I was so concerned about Annabeth that my mind didn't even give a shit about them and their judgmental gazes.
"What happened?" I asked as I managed to fall in step with her. She was still panting but had recovered enough to talk. She wasn't going to start sprinting without a proper warm-up anytime soon though- stiches were never nice to feel.
"I told her that Luke was enrolling here. I had no idea she had a history with him, I swear! She then went hysterical and ran straight to the restroom and locking herself inside one of the compartments. No matter what I did, she didn't even respond to me," Thalia said, a tone of guilt creeping into her voice.
"It's not your fault. I didn't know as well. You were just the unlucky one to tell her I guess. Are you okay though?" I slipped in the question. Thalia had shared with me about her experience with Luke a few years back.
I had asked her why she was so cold and mean to everyone. Having abusive parents made one mistrustful of everyone else, but it doesn't make one cold and mean. If anything, it makes one fearful of everyone else. There must have been something else that had happened to make her cold to everyone and even put on a mean and unfriendly façade.
Then she had mentioned Luke. How he had picked her. How he had became her pillar of support, how he had helped her get through that part of her life.
How he had destroyed everything he had helped her build up, leaving it worse than before.
"I'm fine I'm fine. He's nothing to me anymore," Thalia said, shooting me a quick, small smile. It was a silent "thanks to you" .
"Finally, you're back. Do you know how awkward it is to stand guard at a girl's restroom entrance?" Leo's exasperated, yet slightly worried voice broke me out of my thoughts.
Despite the circumstances, seeing Leo standing so stiffly, with such a pained expression on his face outside the girl's bathroom entrance caused me to smile.
"Good job, Leo. Just take it as a chance to get a girlfriend," Thalia rolled her eyes and patted Leo's shoulder. Leo glared at Thalia before going serious.
"It's been pretty quiet inside there. Went quiet around a minute or two after you left. I don't know whether she hell asleep or something else happened," Leo said, his eyes glancing at the door. Both Thalia and I nodded.
"I'll stay out here with Leo to save him some embarrassment. I don't think my presence will help anyway," Thalia said. I nodded.
"Annabeth?" I called out softly as I entered the restroom. No response. I tried to hear for Annabeth's breathing, but the din outside was just too loud.
As I observed, it became obvious as to which compartment Annabeth was in. Heaving a small sigh, I walked towards the only locked door in the whole restroom and knocked on the door gently.
"Annabeth?" I called with a soothing, gentle voice, hoping that she would respond. She didn't.
I thought about what to do. If Annabeth was indeed asleep, I couldn't let her stay in there for the rest of the day, which meant I would have to maybe climb over the door to wake her up.
But what if she wasn't asleep. What if she was just sitting there, her mind trapped in a horrible loop of memories about whatever Luke had done to her.
I couldn't just force myself in there with her.
"Annabeth, please. It's Percy," I whispered again. I strained my ear to listen to any type of respond- in fact, any sound at all.
Nothing.
After another ten to twenty tries of calling and not getting a single response, I finally decided to just climb up the door to get to her. I had contemplated about kicking the door open, but if she was indeed sleeping, I wouldn't want to wake her up.
I went into the compartment beside hers and stepped on the toilet seat, holding onto the ledge of the wall separating us.
When I managed to catch sight of her, I felt really relieved that I hadn't decided to kick the door open. She was resting on the door. If I had kicked it…who knows what would have happened.
Slowly, I stepped onto the toilet seat in her compartment as silently as possible, not wanting to wake her up. Only when I was finally back safely onto solid ground did I take a good look at her.
I felt like I had just been punched in the gut as I observed her. Her blonde, curly hair was matted to her forehead as well as her cheeks. Tear tracks could be found everywhere on her face and she was sweating profusely. Her skin was as pale as a sheet of blank paper. When I held her hand, I was completely shocked- it was burning. From here, I could hear her labored breathing.
Straight away, I knew that there was no way I was letting her stay in school any longer. I decided to bring her home, far away from school and from the apparent cause of it all.
Luke.
I gritted my teeth in rage as I thought about him. Exactly how many lives had he ruined? First Thalia, and now Annabeth. What the fuck could he have done to make Annabeth react this way, to get so severely hysterical and panicked?
Pushing my thoughts away, I focused on the task at hand. Luke will have to be dealt with later- Annabeth's well-being was my first priority.
After much difficulty, I managed to carefully but swiftly shift Annabeth away from the door without waking her up so I could unlock it and open it. Once I was out, I made straight for the entrance. When I opened the door, I was stunned to see only Thalia and Leo outside. The hallways were completely empty, devoid of people.
Thalia and Leo immediately snapped their heads towards me when they heard me open the door. A second later, a bombardment of questions fell upon me.
"Wait, wait!" I exclaimed, shutting them up for a moment. They both stared at me with expectant and worried eyes, both urging me to give some sort of explanation.
"She's asleep. Been asleep for a while by the look of it. I don't think she's fit for school today, so I'll be bringing her back to my house to take care of her," I told them. They both heaved a sigh of relief.
"That's good. I was afraid she killed herself or something, It was so quiet," Leo said with a small grin.
"Where's everyone, by the way?" I asked, confused as to why the hallway was completely empty.
"Classes have started. You've been in there for quite a while now," Thalia replied. My jaw dropped in surprise – it had been that long?
"That's actually a good thing. I have to carry Annabeth home, so this way, it won't garner any sort of attention at all," I said after a few seconds of mulling over what to do.
"We'll go with you," Thalia said, staring at me, daring me to challenge her. Leo nodded his head in agreement, giving me a determined look.
"But you two will get into trouble if yo-"
"I don't care, Percy. After seeing Annabeth like this, do you think I actually care whether I get into trouble about stupid lessons?" Thalia cut me off fiercely.
I looked at her with exasperation. That's Thalia for you, I guess. I shot Leo a questioning glance.
"Um, yea, I'm with her," Leo replied sheepishly, understandably frightened by Thalia's behavior. I shook my head and gave up.
"Help me go flag a cab then. I'll carry her," I told them before turning back into the restroom, picking up Annabeth bridal style and making my way quickly to the school gate, not wanting to take any chances of people seeing us.
As I walked, I kept glancing at her face. A frown was creasing her forehead and her face was covered with sweat. She was in such a terrible state.
Whatever Luke did to make her react this way to him, he is going to pay.
