Frankie Stein was wiping her bathroom mirror when she heard the news. Her mom came running up the stairs.
"Frankie! Frankie! FRANKIE!"
Frankie stepped out of the bathroom. "What's up, mom?
"You did it! You got in! You're going to Monster High!"
Frankie gasped. She had applied to Monster High three months ago. She didn't think she would get in.
The Stein women met in the hallway. Mrs. Stein gave Frankie the envelope with a large smile on her face. Frankie ripped it open. It was a rather thick envelope, containing multiple pieces of paper. Frankie quickly pulled one of them out.
Dear Miss Stein,
We are pleased to inform you that you have accepted to Monster High. In this envelope you will find
your semester one schedule, your locker number and combination, a list of required course materials,
your dorm room number and key, your roommate's name, a list of dorm essentials, your library card, your photo ID, and a map of the school.
We look forward to seeing you August 1st.
Sincerely, Headmistress Bloodgood
Frankie squealed. "I'm going to Monster High!"
Mrs. Stein hugged her daughter close. "I'm so proud of you sweetie. Your father will be too."
Frankie jumped back. "It's July 27th! I have to start packing now!"
Mrs. Stein chuckled. "You have a week, love. Tomorrow we can go shopping for your dorm stuff and your materials."
It was 6:00 A.M. on the morning of August 1st when Frankie woke up. She leapt out of her bed. She had pre-packed most of her clothes into two suit cases the night before. She quickly began to undress her bed. All of it went into a suitcase that she had filled with toiletries. The past five days had been the slowest of her unlife. She had been home schooled her entire unlife. She had never been around monsters her age. She was excited to become truly independent.
August 1st was simply move in day. August 2nd would be orientation and a mock school day. Students would attend all of their classes for ten minutes and get acquainted with their classmates and teachers. On August 3rd the students would attend a club fair so that the freshmen could see what activities the school offered. August 4th would be the first day of school.
Frankie paced around her room. In less than six hours she would be starting a whole new life. She would be away from her family in a totally new environment. She wasn't sure what to expect. Her whole unlife was about to change in six hours.
Before she knew it, she and her parents were in her dorm room. The walls were dark purple and the floors were a dark wood. A twin bed was pressed against either side of the wall. There was a small desk at the foot of each bed. A few feet away from the desks were closets. Directly behind the left closet was a small shower and towel rack. Behind the right closet was a toilet and a sink.
"This is cute!" Miss Stein exclaimed. "I can't wait to see what it looks like after you and your roommate decorate it. Who is your roommate?"
Frankie pulled the piece of paper from her purse. "Someone named Ghoulia Yelps."
"I can't wait to meet her!" Miss Stein said.
Mr. Stein's phone rang.
"Frank here. Wait, what? How did that happen? Ok, I'll be there as quickly as I can."
He hung up.
"I'm sorry Frankie but we have to leave now. Our new intern closed the lab by himself last night. I guess he wasn't paying attention and somehow shut off power to the lab. No one can figure out to turn it back on."
Miss Stein rolled her eyes. "You've got to be kidding me."
She turned to Frankie. "Are you ok with us leaving?'
Frankie smiled. "Of course! I totally get it."
She wrapped her arms around her parents. "Please call me when the lab issue is resolved."
"Of course sweetheart" Mr. Stein said. "Thank you for understanding."
Her parents pulled away.
"We love you so much sweet heart" Miss Stein said. "We look forward to hearing from you tonight."
Frankie watched them walk out the door. She sat on her bed and took a deep breath.
"Ok Frankie" she whispered. New environment, new chapter... and you're going to kill it!"
She leapt off the bed and quickly opened her suit cases. She tossed her black and white sheets on her bed. It was followed by her electric blue comforter. She topped her bed with two plump pillows. She was unpacking her clothes when her door creaked open.
"Are you Frankie?"
Frankie turned around. A blue zombie stood in the doorway with two large maroon suitcases.
Frankie beamed. "Yes I am! You must be Ghoulia! Let me help you with your stuff."
"Thanks. Your side of the room looks great."
"Thanks!"
The ghouls plumped the suitcases on Ghoulia's bed. Ghoulia started unpacking her clothes.
"Have you been here long?" she asked.
"I got here a half hour ago" Frankie said. "My parents had to leave because of a work place emergency."
"If you don't mind me asking, what was the emergency?" Ghoulia inquired.
"My parents are the CEOs of Stein labs. They hired a new intern a few days ago. Last night they had him close the lab by himself and he somehow shut off the power. No one can figure out how to turn it back on" Frankie explained. "If you don"t mind me asking, where are your parents?"
"They had a work emergency too. They only had enough time to drop me off."
"What was the emergency?"
"My parents are Physics professors at Salem University. They have to review applications for the Master's program."
"That sucks. I'm sorry."
Ghoulia smiled. "It's ok. I'm gonna call them tonight."
She opened her other suitcase. "Do you mind if I display my Deadfast stuff?"
"Go for it. It's your room too."
Frankie sat on her bed while Ghoulia hung up a poster.
"Just a heads up" Ghoulia warned "I kinda have a lot of Deadfast stuff."
She started arranging Deadfast figures on her desk.
"Deadfast as always been an obsession of mine. When I was in elementary school, I only wore Deadfast clothes and had Deadfast stationery. And bedding."
"I can see that you're interests have matured" Frankie observed as Ghoulia dressed her bed with science sheets and a white comforter covered with brains.
Ghoulia chuckled. "My parents got them for me. Acceptance gifts. What classes are you taking this semester?"
Frankie had dumped all her papers on her desk. She rolled on her stomach and pulled her schedule closer to her.
"I have... Home Ick first period, Mad Science Honors second, Physical Deaducation third, and Pre-Clawculus Honors fourth."
Ghoulia was looking at her schedule. "We have the same Mad Science class!"
"Thank goodness. I won't be surrounded by strangers."
"Do you know anyone here?" Ghoulia inquired.
"No. I've been homeschooled my whole unlife. I've never been around other monsters my age before."
"I've been around them my whole unlife and I still don't know how to act around them" Ghoulia admitted.
"We can figure it out together" Frankie offered.
Ghoulia smiled. "I would really like that."
She rolled off her bed. "Let's go grab lunch in the cafeteria."
