A/N:
This chapter takes some lore from a fic on my "ColtKit Productions" Profile. From a "Harry Potter" / "American Dragon Jake Long" crossover fic, called "American Warts". Although hopefully I added enough to keep it interesting.
While The Doctor was having his uplifting experience, Jack was sitting in the common room. Simply listening to his fellow first years boast about their families... and confess their misgivings.
These kids had been friends since they were little. They knew everything about each other.
Pansy, apparently, was promised to Draco. It was an arranged marriage to benefit both their families. Jack understood how breeding was carefully controlled by the "pure bloods". So arranged marriages were often decided the moment the kids gender was determined.
The Malfoys were high class nobles, with enough wizard money to make them billionaires in the normal world. Their ancestors had been one of 42 disciples, who were taken in by "The Prophet Merlin"... Jack couldn't help but wonder, if the Doctor even remembered the ancestor Draco was so proud of.
The Parkinsons, Pansy's family, were rich too, but more like millionaires. Jack rolled his eyes at what a tragedy the girl made that sound like.
The Parkinsons owned an enchantment company in France. Which was fairly popular, but they were having trouble expanding into Britain.
Jack, from his century of living on this planet, could understand the politics of that.
Enchantments were always a hard thing to import, and far harder to get a foreign run company to own a facility in any country. Heck you could be living in a country, and still have trouble getting the government to let you start up an Enchantment company.
Enchantments, any enchantments, had to be made one at a time, by hand, and stored safely. Or else the opposing magics might react badly with each other. The Parkinsons could get through the red tape, a lot easier, if they had family ties to high ranking officials to this country. Then the Malfoys would get a cut of the profits, if they were those ties.
The Magicals didn't seem to think this was an act of corruption in the government. As bribery was actually legal here.
Jack would feel bad, about the children's entire lives being written out, before they were even born... but truth was, Pansy didn't seem to mind. She was head over heels in love with Draco... who seemed to tolerate her in return.
Millicent's family, the Bulstrodes, owned a number of Companies like the Malfoys, and had their fingers in a lot of pies. Millicent's dream, though, was to be an artist. Something she said she could do as a 'hobby', while she ran the family finances.
She was the heiress, so would be the head of the family. Letting women be the Head of the family, was more progressive then Jack thought Magical Britain was capable of being. Though it was still a hierarchy.
She made a point of saying, since she was the heiress, she had no delusions about meeting some stranger, and "falling in love". Both her consort and husband had already been picked out for her.
Normally "Consorts" in the wizarding world, are actually the person you love. They can be any gender, and sometimes even pure bloods will choose a non-human to fit the roll. Which Jack could appreciate, being a lover of Sapients of all shapes. But Millicent couldn't even decide that. As her family wanted strong alliances.
Her husband was going to a Brazilian school, that she only saw once a year. At a formal party the Malfoys had every Christmas. As for her Consort... it was Teddy.
Theodore Nott, Teddy to his friends and family, was a rather dorky child. That had been rudely asking Jack all kinds of questions about Boekind... that Jack just couldn't answer.
The kid was the third child of his family, and so no where near the Heir. His whole purpose in life was to be married off, to benefit his bloodline. The Notts weren't as big as the others, but it was still a "respectable house of pure bloods".
His father actually achieved a "Lord" in Runes, which was the wizarding equivalent of a Masters degree... although much harder to get. The man made a lot of money in the trade, and was currently studying to be a Master. Which was their version of a PHD... although most couldn't hope to pass the test, until they were 100 years old. Which was near half a wizard's lifespan. So he was decades away from that title
The man was actually a little disappointed, that his son wanted to work on the Dragon Reservation, rather then following in his footsteps.
The boy just loved studying magical creatures, hence his personal questions to Jack. Teddy was genuinely curious... and his questions were giving Jack ideas of what HE should ask. That is, if he ever ran into another Boekind.
Regardless, as Teddy was being married off, his dad was less strict about his career choice. So long as Millicent gave the okay, Teddy could do what he liked. He probably had the most freedom out of all the pure blood children... especially since Millie genuinely wanted him to be happy.
She said, he could work on the weekends, as she wanted him home most of the time, taking care of the children. Like a consort was supposed to.
Greg said he was the heir of the largest magical farming family, in Britain, and that Vince was a member of a branch family. The whole family was really close, to the point they all lived together in a large compound.
All their Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins, lived in houses right next door to each other, and they all worked at the farm with an army of House Elves. Since Vince and Greg were the same age, living in a large estate made up entirely of family members, they were raised more like brothers then Cousins.
What really tickled Jack about them was, "You're part giant?"
Greg scowled, "Very distantly descended."
Vince spoke more proudly, "Our ancestor, Goydor, was a half giant, and one of the original 42 Disciples of Merlin."
"But we haven't added any giant blood for basically a thousand years," Greg insisted.
Draco smiled, "You didn't think you were the only sub-humans in Slytherin?"
Jack scowled at the way that was phrased... but it was just made more frustrating, by the fact the boy was obviously attempting to be comforting.
Draco, oblivious to Jack's offense at the terminology, continued. "Goydor's heroics are largely responsible for that. And the Cousin's family line has been breeding with only wizards for so long, they were officially recognized as Pure Bloods about 10 generations back. My family actually helped pass the law that got that recognized."
Blaise scoffed, "Not like that matters. The Cousins still have obvious giant traits. Not just the fact they are a couple feet taller then 11 year olds should be. But they're dumb as stumps, too."
Draco glared at Blaise. Crabb and Goyle were his best friends. They new each other since the diaper days. Their family had been allies since Merlin walked the Earth. And He was NOT about to tolerate ANYONE insulting them... unless they were named Draco, but that was more because the boys liked to playfully banter with each other.
Regardless, this was not the time. They were in the middle of the common room. The Slytherin Prefects were on High Alert, due to Uncle Sev not being here. Remembering the man's words, it wasn't a matter of picking your battles... but timing them.
A/N:
I'm currently debating if I want to do a rewrite of my "American Warts" fic, on my "ColtKit Productions" profile, as a spin off to this one. But I'd have to cut a lot out, and alter some things. Please, if you have read that fic, tell me if you'd like a reimagining in this universe.
