Chapter 6: Finishing up
The team of four were on their way back home to Middleton. They had partially succeeded in their mission, as they had in fact rescued the hostages, no one had been harmed. Unfortunately, the mad scientist had managed to escape capture, absconding with the heart of the toy factory. To make matters worse, Drakken's motives for his heist were still unknown… Despite this, the teenagers were confident that it would involve another plot to take over the world.
Ron sat in the back of their ride, eyes closed and arms crossed. He was engaging in something that he hadn't done all that much in his previous timeline… Ron Stoppable was thinking!
His eyes strayed to the girls, they were all huddled together. They appeared to be talking about something they didn't want him to overhear. 'I guess they're taking this setback much harder than I thought…' It wasn't unheard of for them to fail on a mission, from time to time. Even the old Team Possible had made mistakes, on occasion. He wondered if the girls were fussing about Tara being tagged by Shego, or the villain's daring escape.
…
"I can't BELIEVE I almost snapped like that…" Tara was shocked at her past outburst. She wasn't sure what had come over her, but whatever it was… it had been a narrowly avoided disaster.
The two next to her readily agreed.
"Well, that was a close call…" Kim concurred, she patted the blonde girl's back.
"That's one way to put it… Here I was thinking she was about to go into a cursing fit" Bonnie joked, attempting to lighten the mood. It didn't seem to help, Tara still fretted over what could have happened.
"It's not that big a deal, Tara… I'm sure he didn't even notice…" Kim assured, the two other girls looked at her. "Well, you know how dense he is…" the redheaded teen pointed out, Bonnie and Tara immediately understanding her point.
When it came to certain subjects, Ron could be so very incredibly obtuse. Yes, he was book smart. He was consistently cheerful, no matter what. You could always count on him to be cracking jokes, keeping the mood light… But despite his obvious intelligence, AND his innate skill at humor, he had almost ZERO understanding of girls… It was frustrating, extremely so. But, for the moment, it was a blessing for the blonde girl. She'd finally been successfully reassured, subsequently calming down.
The girls, having finished their conversation, returned to sit next to the blonde boy. On their way back, they overheard him talking to Rufus. Unfortunately, they were unable to discern what he was saying. "So, Ronnie…" Kim began, the blonde boy looked up at them.
"What's up?" he asked, in the same innocent tone he always had.
"Ah… I was… just wondering about…" She paused briefly, before continuing. "…about, you know… the dance?" the redheaded teen prompted, her face turning a bit rosy.
Ron took a second to look at the embarrassed expression on his friend's face. He recalled already seeing her talking to the blonde artist, this WAS about the same time she'd started crushing on the guy in his previous timeline. 'KP probably already asked him out… he obviously said yes' the blonde boy concluded. Ron doubted that anyone would ever be able to turn down any of his friends, if they'd been asked to escort them.
He smiled broadly at the girls. "Yeah, it's going to be fun!" he responded, already sure that they would have a good time.
They just stared at the boy, a small pit opening in their chests, none of them had expected THIS.
…
The team had arrived back home. It was quite late, considering that the flight back from Japan had taken a bit longer than the ride there. Mr. Natsui had offered to let them use one of his jets to get back home, the girls had been more than happy to accept his generous offer.
The girls all said their goodnights to the blonde boy as he entered his home. In any normal situation, they would have gone home as well… But this was DEFINITELY an emergency.
The girls all gathered in Bonnie's room, having agreed that they needed to talk about a very important issue.
"So… where are we at the moment?" Bonnie started things off, sitting at the foot of her bed. Kim and Tara were sitting on a soft rug, staring up at the owner of the room. The girls (and Ron) had come to hang around each other so often, it wasn't anything unusual to have a sudden slumber party.
"I checked with the football team, as well as a few of the other clubs, nothing…" Kim informed.
"I managed to have a look around…" Tara added. "I did spot a few interested looks… but no one that actually did anything…" the blonde beauty recalled.
"I did manage to intercept Britina… but I'm pretty sure I was too late…" Bonnie admitted.
The girls recalled the brunette warning them about the blonde idol's sudden interest in Ron, they didn't like it…
"So… she isn't the one then?" Tara asked, just to make sure. Bonnie shook her head.
They all sighed in relief. 'At least it's not someone like HER…' the three girls consoled themselves.
It appeared that their male best friend was going with SOMEONE to the dance, and it wasn't with one of them… His response had indicated as much, he'd looked so happy about it too.
"We'll have to work fast to find out who is it. …and make sure they UNDERSTAND…" Bonnie's tone and expression was dead serious, her two friends chipped in their agreement.
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
The next day came, the girls all walking adjacent to their blonde companion. Bonnie and Tara each took a side of him, with Kim at the front. To everyone around them, it looked like the girls were escorting a VIP, or something of the like.
Ron didn't really understand what was going on, but let it pass. He was still pouring over his old memories, trying to remember what was going to happen next.
The girls were ready to intercept anyone who came close to the blonde boy. That was, until Kim noticed someone walking towards them.
"Hey Kim, you got a second?" asked Josh. He stood in front of the redheaded teen, forcing her to stop.
"Oh, I… I'm kinda…" She looked back at her friends, seeing both Bonnie and Tara nod their permission. She could deal with whatever she had to.
Kim sighed before agreeing to go with him, but not before shooting the two girls an annoyed look. Kim started walking away with the blonde artist, until she was out of sight.
"Well… I wonder what that could be about…" Tara commented, even if she was certain what the topic would be.
"Maybe she asked Josh out, and he wanted to tell her yes" the blond boy interjected, surprising the two girls. Ron knew from his first timeline that Kim had had a hard time asking Josh out. But when she had, Josh accepted. Kim informed him later that they'd both had a nice time… Ron wasn't sure about any of the details, seeing as he'd been stuck inside a closet and missed the entire night.
"I'm not sure that's the reason…" Bonnie replied.
Hearing her response, Ron simply smiled. 'So, even this time around both KP AND Bonnie like Josh' he concluded. He couldn't help but be envious of the fake blonde, he would LOVE for both girls to be interested in him like that, but quickly banished the wish. 'I shouldn't think about them like that…'
The blonde time traveler noticed a very large boy walking towards them, his eyes locked on Bonnie.
"What do YOU want?" said brunette asked, her voice dripping with hostility.
'Wow, THAT didn't sound good…' Ron opined, the venom in Bonnie's voice bringing back unpleasant memories of the Queen B. He excused himself, explaining that he needed to do something. He chose to leave the two girls alone, scurrying off to talk to Wade.
…
"Okay… now, what do you want?" Bonnie asked again, as soon as Ron had vanished around the corner.
"Wha- Chill out, Bonnie… I just wanted to talk for a second. You know, there's the dance coming up soon, and-" the blonde jock began.
"Yes, I know… I happen to be on the decorating committee…" Bonnie informed dryly, Tara elbowed her in the side.
'Be nice…' she mouthed silently.
"Yeah, I know… I wanted to ask if you wanted to go together" the blonde boy finished, smiling.
Bonnie huffed in annoyance. "Brick, I already told you before… I don't like you like that… So, just stop already" Bonnie declared. Truthfully, she would have loved to humiliate the boy enough for him to leave her in peace. She could only say "no" so many times, before she wanted to reply with a punch in the face.
"I only asked if you wanted to go together… Nothing serious, you might even like it!" the boy continued, he wasn't about to take no for an answer! He only needed to keep pushing, wear her down, until she agreed.
"I doubt it… Now, if we're done here, I need to go" the brunette stated. She turned around, Tara following her.
Both girls walked away, never seeing how angry Brick looked. One thing passed through the quarterback's mind, 'it's all HIS fault…'
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
"You want me to WHAT?" Wade asked his blonde friend.
"I need you to try to find the factory that Drakken stole…" Ron repeated.
"No, I heard you… But, wouldn't you rather go to that school dance you guys have?" The young hacker was fairly confused, he was positive Ron would go with at least ONE of his teammates.
"I would… but I don't have anybody to go with…" the blonde ex-sidekick admitted. He honestly didn't even THINK about asking anyone. The last time he'd done so had been an unmitigated disaster, he'd even been desperate enough to try BRITINA!
Wade's expression was priceless, his mouth hanging open like a fish. "You're kidding, right?" His blonde friend shook his head for a no. 'There is just NO way he hasn't noticed…' Wade couldn't help but think, before he continued. "Look, Ron, I'm still working on finding Drakken's new base. Give me a little time to work my magic… In the meantime, why don't you try and find a date?" he encouraged.
"Fine… I guess I could ask around…" the blonde boy caved, he grabbed a few items he needed for his next class. 'I still have some time before class… Maybe I can look around' Ron concluded. He bid goodbye to his younger friend and closed his locker.
He began moving towards his next destination. He wasn't looking for anybody in particular… but he guessed he could ask someone to the dance, if he got the chance. Arriving at his goal, he stopped and peered through the doorway. 'The library' the blonde greeted in his mind, walking inside. He located a certain bookshelf he visited frequently, searching for any tidbits of information he could gather. There wasn't a lot of credible facts about mystical artifacts, as a general rule, but anything he could find was welcome.
The blonde time traveler grabbed one of the many large books that he hadn't gotten a chance to read yet. He was often too busy with missions, or his friends. Ironically, he just couldn't find the time.
That was another odd thing that had happened to him over the last few years… He'd developed a love for each and every stupid pun that involved time. They just appealed to him, for whatever reason.
The blonde teen was engrossed in his reading, unable to pay attention to anything that was going on around him. So much so, that he failed to notice someone standing right in front of him.
"Excuse me?" a female voice called out.
Ron lifted his head from his book, looking up to see a girl he hadn't expected. A blonde, with sparkling blue eyes that were staring directly at him. She was about his height, wearing a short sleeved purple shirt and blue jeans. She was holding a clipboard in one hand, a pencil in the other.
"Yeah?"
"I was just wondering if you'd like to help out some of the less fortunate. Donate something, or sign this petition" she asked, occasionally glancing at her clipboard. "Even a few cans of food can make a difference" she continued.
'I think her name is Penny?' the time traveler recalled. As he stared at her, said girl seemed to stiffen up.
"You're…" Ron prompted, gesturing towards her.
"Oh! I-It's Penny!" she answered.
"I'm just curious… how many people have you gotten to sign so far?" He didn't even need a verbal reply from the girl, to know her answer. "That bad, eh?" Her face said more than enough.
She nodded. "I-It's not going all that well… Everyone seems to be more interested in that… dance, than helping out other people…" she answered. She glanced away, embarrassed at her small tirade.
"Hey, it's cool, I'm not judging you!" The blonde boy smiled, hoping it would dissolve the tension. "So, how can I help?" he asked.
Her head swiveled back towards him. "Huh? You will?" She sounded genuinely surprised at his words.
"Well, yeah! We have to help out when we can. And it doesn't hurt to think about the future, you know?" the blonde boy explained. That was doubly true for him, being a time traveler and all.
"Y-Yes!" Penny agreed, a bit more enthusiasm in her voice. Her eyes shone, just a bit. "I've been trying to get people to sign, but haven't had much luck…" She handed him the clipboard, so he could sign his name.
"You just need my signature?" Ron asked, she nodded for conformation. He scrawled his name, before handing it back to her. "Here you go, be sure to tell me if I can do anything else to help" the blonde boy offered honestly. Going on missions had only confirmed just how much he enjoyed helping out, when he could. 'This is totally KP's fault' he joked.
The blonde girl accepted the clipboard, before glancing down at it. "I'm kinda surprised that you're even here… You know, with the dance coming up and all" Penny admitted, staring at him.
The boy shrugged, glancing off to the side. "I'm not really all that worried about it, honestly… Hell, I'm not sure if I'll even go."
"What? You're not going?" she asked.
"Well, no… Nobody asked me, so it'd be awkward if I did show up." His eyes darted down, towards his book.
"I-Is that s-so?" the blonde girl replied. She started playing with her hands behind her back. "Um… you know Ron, I don't have anybody to go with either-" the girl admitted, before he cut her off.
"What? No one asked you?!" Ron looked slightly annoyed. "I can understand ME not being asked, but a beauty like YOU? What's wrong with these people?" the blonde boy railed.
Penny looked away, before he could notice her face. "W-Well… if you're not going w-with anyone… do-do you want to go together?" she asked.
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
The team had just finished getting out of their ride. After Ron had finished in the library, he'd gotten a call from Wade. The young hacker had informed him that he'd finally managed to track down the madman.
The girls had been happy to go deal with the blue-skinned man as quickly as possible, Tara looking like she was expecting something. Ron had been unusually quiet during the trip, he appeared to be lost in thought.
The man who'd dropped them off bid them good luck, driving away on his snowmobile.
"Okay Wade, we're here!" Bonnie spoke into her communicator, her friends huddling around her.
"Guys, I've managed to locate the lair… But, I hit a speed bump" he explained. "I wasn't able to shut down the security system… But, I should be able to make it visible" he finished, waiting for their responses.
"Wade, that's awesome!" Tara assured.
"What would we do without you?" Bonnie added, Kim thanked him as well.
"Seriously dude, you rock!" Ron added, for good measure.
"Thanks guys! I'll stop you now, before it all goes to my head…" Wade started typing like a man possessed, before looking up from his keyboard and smirking. Not one second later red lasers started becoming visible, as his work bore its fruit.
The team stared at the ridiculous number of beams, preparing their snowboards. The teenagers stood in a line, as if they were about to participate in a race. "Last one there is a rotten egg!" Kim called out. She took off like a bat out of hell, the rest of her team chasing her.
"Hey, no fair!" Bonnie shouted, as she sped along the slope.
Kim made sure to jump, duck and slide from side to side. She gained a substantial lead on her teammates.
Kim jumped into the air, soaring over several lasers. She grabbed her board, spinning around in the air, before landing like a pro snowboarder. "Okay, now she's just showing off…" Tara grumbled.
"You can do better, right?" Ron commented to no one in particular. He made sure to keep his eyes peeled, determined not to hit anything himself.
Bonnie and Tara both glanced back at him, before smirking to one another, as if they were communicating telepathically. Both started speeding up, moving closer to each other. The blonde cheerleader reached out to grab Bonnie's hand, before the blond used her momentum to fling her friend as hard as she could… Way up into the air, far higher than the area that the lasers covered.
'I still can't believe that Tara is so absurdly strong!' the blonde boy marveled. He'd found out from direct observation during one of their early missions. It had been quite a surprise to see someone so cute and gentle, flinging goons left and right without any difficulty. Hell, she was stronger than Kim! Maybe even himself! 'Note to self… don't piss her off' the blonde boy mused. Even IF he didn't think she could ever be upset with him, he couldn't even imagine it.
Bonnie, who was still up in the air, made sure to spin more than a handful of times. Gravity finally made itself known, as she began her decent.
She ended up dangerously close to Kim, landing only a yard or so in front of her. Bonnie glanced back, smirking.
The two reached their destination; Bonnie arriving first, followed closely by Kim. "That was a cheap move, Bonnie…" the redheaded teen sulked.
"Says the one who got a head start…" Bonnie smirked, taking great pride in showing her friend who was the boss.
"Careful now…" admonished the blonde time traveler, both girls turned around.
Bonnie and Kim's eyes widened in horror as they saw Ron holding Tara, the blonde girl hugging his arm firmly.
"W-What are you doing?" Kim asked, mere moments before Bonnie did.
The young Stoppable came to a halt, looking up. "Tara's snowboard was damaged, when she launched Bonnie into the air, I wanted to make sure she would be okay" he explained.
Both girls glanced down at Tara's board. To be fair, there WAS a small crack running down its middle. However, it did not appear to be anywhere close to as dangerous as had been suggested. Both pairs of eyes shot back up, narrowing at the 'frightened' Tara STILL firmly grasping Ron's hand.
She was smiling brightly, staring at him with bedroom eyes. "Ronnie is so considerate~" she cooed, leaning even more into his side.
Bonnie and Kim had been willing to give their friend the benefit of the doubt until Tara glanced their way, a tiny smile on her face.
'That little!' both girls fumed, the truth of the situation hitting them.
It didn't matter that Bonnie had crossed the finish line first, she sure as hell hadn't been the girl who'd "won". After noticing Tara's expression, it was obvious that both Bonnie AND Kim currently had egg on their faces. …hell, it wouldn't even be a stretch to assume that the clever blond girl had planned this from the start!
Their little race concluded, the team made their way through the entrance to the base. It had been disguised as a huge bolder, one that fit well with the scenery. The one leading this time was Tara, as the blonde girl had far more energy than normal. …and that was saying something!
Wade's hacking had been more successful, seeing as they were much closer to the center of the base. The team had been able to connect him to a panel in one of the walls, making their progress much easier.
'Now, where is that freak?' Tara pondered, glancing around to locate her target.
They all advanced together, spotting the machine that had been stolen from the factory in Japan. It was currently running, making some strange-looking toys.
"Okay, what's the plan?" Bonnie whispered, her friends stopped and looked at her.
"The usual routine?" Kim volunteered, Ron shook his head for a no.
"How about one of us acts as the usual distraction, while two others try to shut down the machine? Whoever is left will try to kill the power, just in case" the blond boy suggested. The three girls glanced at one another, nodding in conformation, the plan seemed fine to them.
Before her friends managed to say anything, Tara spoke up. "I call dibs on dealing with Shego" she declared.
Both Kim and Bonnie could see that the blonde teen was adamant on having some words with the green-skinned woman. They were willing to let her have her way, for now.
"Fine… then I'll deal with the goons, in case things go south…" Kim volunteered.
"I guess that leaves me with cutting the power, huh?" Bonnie replied. She took her job willingly, even if it was the least exciting one.
"Then I'll help KP with her job" Ron concluded, before pulling his hairless friend out of his pocket. "Rufus, you go with Bonbon. Just in case she needs any help" he told his friend.
"Mmm!" the little creature acknowledged, before hopping from his hand. Rufus landed on Bonnie's open palm, running up to her shoulder from there.
"Looks like it's you and me again, huh?" Bonnie teased the hairless mole rat, he nodded in response. Rufus then proceeded to her rub her cheek, making the brunette giggle.
Seeing that still warmed Ron's heart, even after all this time. "Alright guys, let's finish this quickly!" Kim enthused, the rest nodded and spread out.
…
It wasn't even two minutes in and they'd already been discovered.
"Okay… in hindsight, we probably shouldn't have been racing here…" Ron admitted, Kim glanced at him out of the corner of her eye.
"No… you think?" Kim deadpanned. She leaned against his back, looking around the room. They were completely surrounded by Drakken's goons. 'Ronnie has a really broad back-' she cooed, before banishing the thought. 'Not the time to be crushing on your best friend, Kim!' she admonished, refocusing on the issue at hand.
"Well… look who it is…" Shego chuckled, standing on a walkway above their heads. "Stoppable, fancy meeting you here… Did you come over to give me your answer?" the older woman asked.
"He'll never join you!" Kim shouted, glaring at her former nemesis.
Shego stared at her. "I don't recall mentioning it to you… Let me guess, Ron told you?" she mocked.
"No, he didn't… But, when you see him, that's all you ever do! You need to find someone your own age" Kim sniped.
"I'm not that much older than you are. Besides, who knows… maybe he prefers mature women" the villainess snapped, still managing to maintain her smile.
"Don't you mean old women?!" Tara shouted. She sailed through the air, kicking Shego in the back of the head.
Said woman went flying a few dozen feet, before crashing into some boxes. The area around her exploded into a haze of wooden shrapnel. Shego glared at the blonde cheerleader who'd attacked her. "I must say Goldilocks… I hadn't expected to see you so soon, not after Japan. But, don't worry… I'll make sure this is the LAST time" Shego threatened. Her hands lit up with green plasma, a fire that could destroy anything in its path.
Tara just smirked at the woman. "Whatever you say, granny…", she gestured towards Shego to bring it on.
The green-skinned woman's roar shook the base, she barreled towards Tara. The blond girl ran forward, eager to get her revenge.
"I guess we ARE doing this after all!" Kim declared, as the many goons swarmed her and Ron.
It wasn't anything new, or overly difficult, for them. Especially now that Ron was done running away. His body moved and swayed. Not in an inhuman way, but just enough to take care of the enemies around him.
Kim did the same, illustrating why she was so incredible at her missions.
It only took a few minutes, before the many goons were lying on the floor. They were all either knocked out, or simply too hurt to move. "Nice job, KP!" Ron complemented. He walked up next to his partner, a smile on his face.
Said redheaded teen couldn't help but blush, wearing a happy smile of her own. When Ron praised her, she always had that reaction. And he did so quite often! Even more than he did Tara, or Bonnie! It made her feel special! "Thanks Ronnie! But, they weren't that difficult" she admitted, showcasing her famous modesty. Kim's gaze turned to the catwalks, seeing that Tara was still busy sparring with Shego.
"Tara is still fighting, let's go help her finish up" Ron declared, he felt Kim's hand grab his shoulder.
"Ronnie, I think we should let her have this…" Kim counselled, hoping he wouldn't push the issue.
Ron looked confused for a moment, before nodding in agreement. "Fine… But if it looks like she's in serious trouble, I'll swoop in to help her…" he vowed.
"I know you would, I wasn't going to abandon her either" Kim answered in kind, they both watched their blonde friend up above.
