|Well here is the long awaited chapter 2 and continuation of this story. Yes there is more coming but I liked this blerb and decided to go ahead and post it. Expect the next part soon. As always please enjoy reading and even leave a review if you wish. Yes this takes place in a Young Justice AU. No I don't own the rights to the characters or any DC properties.|
Mount Justice was alive and bursting with life. Music was playing and teens were socializing, it was a birthday party after all. Even a few leaguers and non members were in attendance. All except one, the individual whose birthday was being celebrated was nowhere to be found. Wally West however was determined to change that. If someone really wants to know where someone is you ask a bat. So he locked onto his fellow redhead sitting on the couch and called out, "Hey Batgirl!"
Batgirl took a pause, looking up from her slice of cake giving a small wave to the speedster. Swallowing her food before returning the greeting. "What's up Wally?"
Wally smiles, working on a slice of his own. "You seen Nightwing? Kind of hard to have a birthday without the guy it's supposed to be for."
Batgirl stopped eating and set her plate down on the coffee table before scanning the room. Once she was sure no one would take notice if they left she stands up and motions for Wally to follow her. Picking up on this, Wally follows her without a fuss, figuring it had something to do with the Bat family's civilian IDs. What he didn't plan on was her leading them to the grotto under the mountain that served as a memorial for fallen team members. Two holo-statues stood tall, one of the original Blue Beetle. Wally's gaze drew towards and lingered on the other, the first Robin, his pseudo little brother, Dick Grayson.
"He went back to Gotham. Wanted to be alone for a little while." Batgirl answered
"He just left? He does realize this party is for him right?" Wally struggled to hide the shock in his voice but managed to compose himself.
Batgirl's eyes fall on her fallen best friend's holo-statue. It had been a little over two years since Dick's passing. And while things had gotten better, some things were never the same. "He's older than him now."
"What?"
"Jason, he's seventeen now." Batgirl clarified.
Wally looked at her, a little confused. "Well yeah, it's his birthday. That tends to happen, he gets older."
Batgirl looked down from the statue of the first Robin. "Robin… Dick." It was still hard for her to talk about her best friend though she could do so without crying anymore. For the most part. "When he… Passed away, he was only sixteen at the time Wally." Wally also started to somber a little at the mentioning of his best friend and teammate. "After today Jason wont have any memories of what Dick did at his age."
It finally clicked for Wally. Jason felt that now that he was older than Dick had ever been, it was like they were leaving the first Robin behind. "Oh." Was the only thing he could say in response.
A tear fell down Batgirl's face, so much for not crying. She giggled slightly at Wally's deep conversational skills. "Yeah, oh." There was a moment of pause where both of them looked up at the hologram of Robin, he was smiling like there wasn't a care in the world. "When Jason told me that it took me off guard. He's not much of a deep thinker, so it surprised me to learn that this was weighing on him quite a bit. Before today he could just believe that Dick just isn't around, but now. Now he said it feels like there is a true finality to it, his older brother is now truly gone. At the time he didn't express it but I could tell, Dick meant more to Jason than I think any of us will really know. Dick is the reason Jason was taken in in the first place. It may be Bruce's home that they lived in, but it was Dick that opened the door and told Jason it was okay to come inside."
Wally rubbed the water out of his eye. He wasn't crying, there was just dust in it. All he wanted was to find out where Nightwing was so he could drag him back to the party. Now he didn't feel like returning to the festivities either. Trying to change the subject in an effort to recompose himself.. "So what did he ask for as a gift this year?"
Batgirl smiled a little, "More books for his growing collection. I think Poe was the primary author this time around."
"You know I never thought of Jason as a guy who liked to read. He's always so brash and rough that I forget that this is his hobby, and also how smart the guy is, most of the time." Wally laughed a little.
Batgirl laughed along as well. "You're not wrong for thinking that. He's definitely earned that reputation for being a brazen and brash individual." She lets out a deep sigh. "The truth is though the books are not what he really wanted."
"What was it he really wanted?" Wally asked but he already knew. After all, he wanted the same thing and figured Batgirl wanted it as well.
"Time." Batgirl looked at Wally. "He'd do anything to even get just one more day with his older brother."
After that the two of them just stood in silence looking at the holograms, listening to the gurgling of the water running through the grotto. Both standing in a comfortable silence as the evening dragged on, neither wishing to return to the party.
|Well I hope you enjoyed this short chapter. The next one will be longer. Until then happy reading!|
